SD card issues on reboot - Moto G7 Play Questions & Answers

I bought a G7 Play during Thanksgiving sales at Wal-Mart. It's been running fine until today, when I rebooted.
It's stock. I haven't unlocked the bootloader or rooted it.
I have a 64 GB PNY Elite SD card configured to be portable storage.
Today, when I rebooted, I got a notification "SD card issue. Tap to fix." When I tapped, it wanted to know whether I wanted to use the SD card as adoptable or portable storage, and wanted me to reformat the card regardless of which option I chose.
I turned the phone off and removed the SD card, replacing it with a 2 GB Samsung card. That one functions as expected.
Has anyone else seen this behavior, and is there anything to be done to fix it, or should I just contact Lenovo?
Thanks!

Try using another phone with this SD Card. If it works then your phone is having incompatibility with the card. Didn't work? Your SD Card data has probably got corrupted. If you can plug it on computer with an adapter check if it shows RAW in disk management. If it does try formatting with windows usual format procedure. If that shows an error your last resort would be using diskpart. use list disk, then select the disk which is your sd card, then type clean, then create partition primary, then format. That didn't work too? Then it's a hardware issue and what you got there is part of e-waste now.

Mini SD RAW format advice

Hi all,
I just got a new Sandisk 1GB Mini SD for my Wizard. I put it in my phone and it was recognized immediately. I copied a few files across (my TomTom install and a few maps) and then finished the install. I had to soft-reboot to get TomTom to work - but after rebooting my card doesn't work. When the phone starts up it asks if I want to format the card. I tap yes and it goes away - but doesn't really do anything.
I have taken the Mini SD out of my phone and put it into the card reader that's in my laptop. Windows recognizes that it is a SD card and also prompts to format it - but when I try to format it as FAT or FAT32 it says it can't complete. I have tried doing it through DOS too, but it comes back as saying that there is a bad Track 0 and the card is unusable.
I'm struggling to believe that the card is now poked after just copying some files onto it. I'm hoping that it's just something to do with the file system that has dies somehow. Does anyone know how to reformat the card (either through my phone or Win XP) or how can I resurrect this sucker?
Thanks in advance!
try pocket mechanics
thanks rudegear. I tried pocket mechanics, but it doesn't even recognise the card. I believe that pocket mech will only work if my phone can see the card first. this isn't even happening. the phone obviously knows that there is a card in it, as it says that the expansion slot is in use, but it can't read the card at all. any other ideas?
sounds like you have a fake card. 128mb cards formated to show 1gb, you copy more than 128 they corrupt. this happened to me
okay. I've given up on this card and have sent it back. no more trying to ressurect the dead for me!
has the new card solved the prob? The problem Iam having is almost identical to yours. I purchased a 2gig mini sd card (bn) for my atom. When inserted into my laptop's integrated sd reader, it would recognise a card has been inserted but would not open the card (but the Atom recognised the card).
Thinking I have bought a faulty card, I sent it back to manufacturer. The seller tested and concluded there is nothing wrong with the card but sent me a new one.
I had the same trouble with the new card. Convinced the card was not faulty, I purchased a new card reader.
The firt day i connected the card into the reader. things were SMOOTHE! I was lovn life. The card was read instantaniously and i proceeded to fill the card with a hole heap of goodies (including tomtom).
I used up approx 100mb of stuff that day and ejected the card from reader and inserted in my atom. Data was read with no trouble on pda and pc.
I inserted the sd card back into card reader the following day and now it seems the data originally put on from the first 'contact' is now locked. I cannot delete nor add anything else to the card. Oh and before anyone asks: yes, the lock was and is in the UNLOCK position (i dont even use the lock).
So my next move now is to exchange my card reader with a simpler/single slot. I read somewhere that cardreaders/devices sometimes lock data (dont know how true it is but got no choice).
in summery:
buying an external card reader solved the initial issue of recognizing/reading sd card but created another problem of LOCKING the sd card.
Is anyone else having issues with large sd cards?
I solve the problem by inserting card to Digital Camera that use SD card.
it formatted without error.
Card Reader and other phones does not format it. I think because of file system.
hmm... I will try that. will keep you all posted.

Micro SD cards not detected

I'm having some strange issues with my S3 and micro SD cards. I noticed any attempt to access one of the folders will force crash any app that tries.
Then I did a nandroid backup from TWRP recovery and when I rebooted the phone, it claimed that the card was empty or damaged.
So I connected the card to my computer to backup everything that was there. Windows did say it needed to be scanned for errors but it didn't find any errors. It was formatted as exFat so I could put larger than 4 GB files on it.
When I put it back in my S3 it wasn't detected at all. No error messages, it was just as if I hadn't put any card in. Under Storage settings, under mount external SD card it just says to insert a card.
What I've found since then is in order to get the S3 to recognize that there is a card I need to do a full format (either FAT32 or exFAT) on my computer. If I do a quick format, it still won't be recognized. I need to do a full format.
But then, if I unmount and connect to my computer, then eject from my computer and put it back in my S3 it isn't detected again and I have to do a full format again.
I thought maybe the card had become defective, but I'm seeing the exact same behaviour now with a different card. The first one I was using was a class 10 32 GB lexar card. The second one is a class 10 16 GB Adata card. Both do the same thing. After a full format on my computer, they are detected on the phone but after unmounting, mounting on my computer, not doing anything except ejecting it, they stop being detected by the S3.
I've even tried re-formatting the card in the phone but that doesn't change anything.
Anyone know what's going on here? Is the phone defective? I don't want to send the phone in for warranty repair except as a last resort as I suspect that would mean several weeks without a phone.
Thanks!

SD card problem. does not work and mount. HELP Please

Dear readers,
I hope you all fine.
Just bought LG G3. Shifted from S5. Facing problem of SD card not being shown in the setting> storage and not even the file manager.
When I plug in the sd card it shows a notification in the phone, "SD card inserted". However, after showing this message it does not show in Storage (setting) and file manager. Meanwhile, the sd card perfectly works in S5 even I plug it again.
Card: SanDisk 64GB xtreme series card.
Please tell me the solution to it. I am really worried.
First off, it might be a bootleg, I had the same problem. But, since you said you used it in your S5 and it worked, it's probably not.
The G3 might not be reading its contents or able to mount it properly, it senses it in the slot but can't or won't read it.
You can try backing up and copying your SD card's contents onto a PC. Then quick format it on your PC and then insert into in the G3, go to Settings then Storage and then, if it's mounted, choose Erase SD card.
After doing that, it should be able to mount the card and read/write to it. Then you can copy your files over to the SD card.
I noticed what might cause it not to be read is the Android and Data folders on the SD card (carried over and written by your other phone). I'm not sure if the G3 reads those and see other system files/configs and decides to ignore it or not.
i had the same problem. could never get an sdcard to mount, so i had to return the phone. my new one read the sdcard (same one) just fine. luckily, when i returned it, the VZW person didn't know to check for root... lol
Same issue for me but sd card was pefectly working since few hours...
Will try a backup and erase sd card

My SD Card died. I tried it several devices and it was "Dead Jim". Just got my replacement today from Amazon 17.99 for Samsung 32gb micro SD Card.

SD card is always corrupted after 6.0 update.

My SD card is always corrupted. I tried using different SD cards even i bought a brand new SD card and it is still giving me issues . I did a factory reset and still does the same. Anyone else with the same issue?
What's the capacity and speed of your SD card? How are you formatting the SD card? Do you use it preformatted or format using the phone? The reason I'm asking is it seems to me that Sony has set a too low timeout values for formatting and mounting the SD card. So if your card is very big or not fast enough, the phone would timeout too early when formatting and/or mounting the SD card on boot, thus causing it to be detected as corrupted. At least that is how it seems on my phone.
perhaps have reset your phone from previous backup ? if this is the problem already happened to me ,
They are both high speed cards 10 cards Toshiba and Samsung to be more specific. When i format them they seem to kinda work at the beginning i even managed to copy a video file but after a phone restart it gets corrupted .
MM updated through xperia companion here, seems to be working normally with the old microsd card
Hi Team,
I also have the same issue here, whenever I move applications to SD card (Samsung Class 10), the application stops working and I have to
reboot the phone to have it running again. Though it happens only... when phone is from Doze mode, turned on the screen with power button, and after turning on mobile data and run the app like COC or Viber it crashes. Now this happens only, if my application is in SD, if it's on the phone it's working fine.
Hello everyone.
I also have this problem. I have a Sandisk ultra (red and grey) 32gb class 10 sd card, and my M5 on 6.0 cannot format it at all, first it says it's corrupted and I have to fix it, then the format screen is stuck on 20% and after a while it says the card cannot be formatted. The card isn't counterfeit, and it worked flawlessly in my m4. It was replaced under warranty because I presumed it became faulty, and I still have the same problem. There is no problem with it on my PC. Also the phone freezes when the card is removed and I have to turn it off with a paperclip on the small "off" button.
You have sd card restrictions on 6.0, so you can use it for media, can't move apps... I've got Transcend sd card class 10, no problem at all.
I know about the SD card restrictions but my card was working fine in 5.1 for storing photos and videos taken by the camera applications . Now i have tested even more cards and they all have the same behavior. Even with an 4GB and 8 GB Toshiba cards and an old 2GB transcend card.
tonev, how are you formatting the card?
On the phone it self. Also tried to format it on my laptop , Same result. Sometimes it works fine and after i restart my phone it gets corrupted again
any news or fix here? seems we're stuck with this sd behavior? can't really move apps to sd card?

Is it correct to assume that you restart the phone only using the default power menu and not using any third party interface?
Another thing, it is not advisable to format the SD card using Window's Format function. It is possible to damage the SD card this way. The safest way to format an SD card in Windows is by downloading and using the SDFormatter utility. I don't know if formatting you card in Windows is what has caused your SD card to be corrupted, but it is something to be considered.
Yes i do restart the phone only by using the default power button. menu. And none of my cards are corrupted because they work fine on other devices. As i said before a brand new never used genuine samsung SD card does not work on the phone.

SD Card "corrupt" after every power off

Hi!
I've recently noticed a strange reproduceable behaviour of my Moto Z Play. I have a SD card formatted as internal encrypted memory (20GB) and portable (40GB). When I Power off via the Power off option, and boot up the device it tells me the portable partition of my SD card is corrupted and asks me to fix. However this can be fixed by simply putting the SD card in a PC/Mac and then putting it back into the phone. This is a reproduceable problem if I follow these steps:
1. Power off
2. Turn phone on again and wait for booting to finish
3. Portable SD card partition is recognized as corrupt
4. Power off
5. Insert SD in Mac, wait to get recognized
6. Eject from Mac
7. Put in Phone
8. Profit
I wonder why this happens and what I can do to prevent this. It is really annoying to not be able to listen to my music after an exam until I reach home...

Maybe card going bad? I'm using a 128gb card with split adopted (30gb) and portable (90gb) partitions. I get the expected adopted storage missing message for a few seconds on boot until it has time to read the card, but no issue with the portable partition.

Could be, it's just 2 months old though. Also it's a little weird that it works perfectly fine until I power off my phone again.
Got this error too but just waited for it to continue booting and the card works.

How long did you wait? I had my phone running for 2hours and it still showed that the SD is corrupt
A minute or so. I have mine combined with internal storage. Ie I have 64gb internal now instead of 32gb. If there is nothing critical on yours, just reformat it in the phone. I always have my phone auto backup everything in case the phone gets lost our broken.

Maybe I will do the reformatting too, but I feel like it should work non the less and it is super annoying....
It is definitely not the problem of the SD card, since it is recognized just fine by my other phone. However putting it in my phone does not "fix" it, I still have to put it in the Mac, let it mount and then eject to fix it.
I have a question: How to have two partitions on your sd card for android?
I have a 64gb card and would like to extend my internal storage, also have an external SD that i can use on my pc if i put it in there.

Have the same problem, SD card error and whatever option you choose - doesn't work. The problem is that I don't have an adapter, so cannot re-format it
Format sd card as portable
I've seen this question coming up again recently after going quiet for some time. Common element is formatting the card as internal adopted memory. For some unknown and yet to be resolved reason mounting the sd card as internal memory has a glitch and stops working. The only known solution is to not use the card as internal memory. Reformat the sd card as 'Portable' memory using the reformat function built into the phone itself. Portable allows you to eject the memory card and use/read it in another device. Internal Adopted memory locks the card to the phone and encrypts it. You cannot read a card used as internal adopted memory in any other device, and if you reformat it, you will wipe it clean and delete everything on in. But if you want the memory card to work, you want to use it as Portable memory.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
Unfortunately that does not solve the problem. Even when I format my card as "portable" the phone tells me my card is damaged and needs to be formatted (after one power cycle) . The card isn't damaged though and can be read perfectly on my pc. And it's no cheap card either. A Samsung Evol Plus (Class 10, U3). I'm trying another brand to see if this will fix things.
