Is it possible to swap ram chips (Or SoCs) between the S9 and the Note 9 - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hello there,
I was wondering if there could be a chance that I could swap ram chips between my S9 and the Note 9.
They have both the same SoC but with different ram chips on the very top of the SoC, I know you can physically swap the ram chips but I was worried if the Stock software could boot the phone without any changes made to it. I was also considering a full SoC swap, maybe that could increase the success rate of the SoC not dying.
Thanks in advance

You have a very interesting concept of the word soon

Never seen this, has it been done before with other models?

Not that I know of. That's why I'm asking. Of this was possible it would open up some DIY ram upgrades for a lot of phones if it works.

I've seen similar things before, with the old Sony UX UMPC, they figured out to solder another 1GB or RAM on top of the existing 1GB RAM

Nice, it's basically the same thing on the S9 in theory. You de-solder the SoC from the original phone, you get the SoC (the same SoC with different Ram capacity)that you want from an other phone and then you solder it on the original phone. I was wondering if there was a software compatibility issue. You could de-solder the Dram chip that is located on top of the SoC but I think that's a little bit more complicated. I have never done this, I've only seen photos of the motherboard of the S9 and how it's made.

modem cfg file in JMK rom

There is file named nvm_SP6160_MODEM_V09.23.03_0f104f9d.cfg in the new firmware, I have never seen something like this before.
how do we flash this?

Why flash if you don't know what it does? JMK works fine without it anyway

Seems like it tells the tab the location of various modem related configs. It might help us with enabling the voice on tmobile USA tab.
Samsung has never given us anything like this before. Now tab is almost at the end of it's life cycle because tab 2 will be coming out soon. May be samsung gave the opensource community what they were holding back.
I don't think it tells the tab anything, but it does provide an interesting "read" (more of a pick through)
The brief Google searches I was able to conduct tell me little about what it all means, but if someone could enlighten me on how to dump memory addresses from the Tab I'll do more research

Is it at the end of it's lifecycle? They are still to release the wifi only model.
There is no "Tab 2" - there's the 7", 8.9" and 10.1".

Wifi model Will have a single core processor?
From what I have read lifecycle of singlecore processor smartphone devices is over, next version will have dual core.

Wifi model (P1010) seems to have Texas Instruments OMAP processor. At least so it looks like from the leaked ROM.

The HTC Flyer will have a single core processor and it isn't even out yet!
Dual core isn't a panacea - there will still be a market for single core devices for a while.

Dave
Dual core processors for PC's have been around for years and you still get PC's with single core processors
can any one tell me who to flash the nvm_SP6160_MODEM_V09.23.03_0f104f9d.cfg in the JMK rom?
I tried to flash the JMK rom with Odin. But the update failed by transfering the modem.bin file to the SGT. I hope that has something to do with the nvm_SP6160_MODEM_V09.23.03_0f104f9d.cfg and some one can help me
I want to know more about this cfg file too.

Processor swap?

Does anyone know if the EVO 4g's processor can be swapped out with an aftermarket dual core processor like the one in the 3D. If so will it break other parts in the phone. Just a thought.
Sent from my PC36100 usig XDA App
dont think it will just be easy as that i think we will need a modified rom and kernel that can work with the processor and some other stuff if it were that easy i think most people would do that
Thanks just a thought.

If it were only this easy. But my buddy Afteraffekt has some reasons why this would never work.
Chipsets arent comaptible
CPU is soldered on
RAM isn't compatible
Just physically doing the swap is nearly prohibitive. With surface mounted chips like this, you can't just grab a soldering iron from Radio Shack and have at it. You need special equipment, and I don't even know if HTC themselves would remove processors and replace them (i.e., for servicing). They probably just pitch the board. Add to that the fact that the chip size probably isn't the same, so it wouldn't match up with the leads from the old processor, and even if it did, the pin-outs might be different.
Finally, even if you could make it physically work, other parts on the board may not be designed to work with it, and you'd probably need to put together a custom kernel at least to get the thing to boot.
So....short answer...no.

[Q] - Any H/W mod for GN

Hi all, just a thought, since GN has mods for Kernel, ROM, Casing, covers .. etc has anyone encountered any hardware MOD for Samsung Galaxy Nexus ? like those you can open up the phone and simple removing some chip and replacing it with another e.g. storage from 16gb to 32gb.. internal RAM from 1gb to 3 gb .. etc like a PC..
p.s. after flashing ROMS/Kernels for a few months, thinking of trying something new
we wouldn't need to upgrade phone each year if the said things can be done easily
besides a phone is not a pc, and i'm pretty sure not everyone wanna mess their $700 device in such way
I bought a cable for USB sticks and use chainfires USB app. But sorry bud not sure you could pull out that sandisk chip and throw a bigger one in. Not yet at least
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
thanks all guess after seeing so many kind of MODs out there in this forum, kinda hope its possible..

No it's not possible.
Even if you did manage to open it, the chips would still be soldered to the MB.

These phones are not meant to be generally user-serviceable (and especially not user-upgradeable).
Use the phone how it is and you'll be happy. When its outdated, sell it and buy a new model that suits your needs.

[Q] Downside to 4G LTE?

Noob here who has decided on Samsung note 10.1 for my first tablet ... but which one? Looking for fastest performance and longevity. Does the added mobility of 4G degrade performance during WiFi operation? ... are there disadvantages other than related costs?
tx in advance!
I will advice the 4G version because it have the Snap800 like processor and have the 4G that is better and faster like 3G.
Finally, the Snap800 will have more support from dev then the 3G with the Exynos by Sammy
The trade-off will be reduced battery life most likely if traveling in weak LTE areas.
I'm leaning towards SD800, especially after what I saw in the picture

Thank you for your replies. Looks like only the 4G version has the faster SnapDragon800. Ok that's settled.
Between32 and64, will the 64 remain faster as the memory folk
fills up or is it all the same in respect to performance?
Tx for answering my dumb questions!

I wouldn't say that the sd is faster just yet, there are no real benchmarks out there just yet for the new octo core 5420, based on the few cryptic leaks they seem to think that the new octo might be a tiny bit faster. Im not going to jump to any conclusions just yet, I would preffer the sd800 on my device if only for the cyanogenmod support
Will you be able to use this device as a phone? As in does it have a dialer that you can use with a regular SIM like the old one?
I'm getting the one with the Snapdragon processor in it.
Sammy promised that they will include HMP (Heterogeneous Multi Processing) in their 5xxx processors . Ie; they will make s4,note3 and note 10.1 to real octa core processors through a software upgrade (say kernel upgrade)...so guess , which will have higher performance , sd or exynos? ? ? ?
And also exynos version will have wolfson audio DAC in it , so exynos defeats sd in audio performance

I would welcome an LTE model on Verizon except it will be limited to 16GB of storage and I just won't accept that. You need 32GB or higher internal storage for apps not medial content that is what the microsd is for.

I think I read that the phone version (which won't be sold by US cellular companies) is limited to 2G. I would love to hear differently.

Whoa..that's completely unacceptable (I'm Verizon). Agree on 32 min. Where can I find spex on Verizon's version?
The spec sheet Mashari_F posted helps differentiate among variants but I'm still not clear.
I'll likely have to wait until later in Nov. for my own good ... see how users are feeling about SD VS. OCTA and see what Verizon puts out vs. Wifi.
Tx!
16GB should be fine, I have tons of apps and games installed on my 16GB old note 10
and still have 4-5GB left, if you are planning on installing huge games like nova 3 (I think it takes up 2.2GB) then you might want to consider the 32GB instead
if you root and have a nice size microsd handy, you really wont have to worry about it
So, if you want the best CPU, you have to buy the version with a cell radio in it? That's kinda dorky, since I can just tether to my phone. But I guess if I want the best CPU I gotta buy the 4G (that I won't use).

Yes, sure.
Because Snap800 support LTE.
And Snap800 version will be better then Exynos
See the S4, the S600 have more support that Exynos Octa...
We dont know which is more powerful yet, this is the new octa core, not the old one
Wait for benchmarks from the new one to see

lol, benchmarks...
I won't see bench, because they don't have a lot of sense.
Snap800 will be supportated because devs know the architecture and they always have the source code...
Isn't the same for the Exynos...
It's like S3 for the Cyano
So, ATM, Snap > Exynos

Samsung released the kernel source for the Exynos version a few days ago (sammobile.com/2013/09/20/samsung-releases-kernel-source-for-galaxy-note-10-1-2014-edition). I'm not very familiar with all the lingo, so please enlighten me: Is this not (all) the source code that devs need to do their thing?
Can someone explain why someone buys an expensive note 10.1 only to install cyanogenmod and lose all the exclusive features? (Spen, multiwindow, ir blaster, and some other things)
Just buy a nexus 10 or wait for the new one if you are going to do that

The big problem there isn't the source code, this was an older problem, but the structure of the partition and the core.
If a dev will build a kernel, the source are here.
But, trust me, snap have a source code more easy, it's quadcore, and we know all about this.

There isn't any sense...
In fact, i will buy it only for the feature of the tab, not for the Cyano rom
Maybe, someone, will work on a tweaked rom Touchwiz based.

USB C Question - For AUS Variant

A questions for any Australians out there , or anyone else that has the answer.
I have seen a lot of posts about the USB-C versions (2.0 vs 3.1 etc), I have also asked Samsung Aus directly and they cannot provide me an answer......(not sure why). Maybe they cant until the phone is released.
But i would like to know what version the Australian model will have......2.0 or 3.1?
This is the model number that comes up on my order; SM-N930FZKAXSA

As far as I'm aware all the Galaxy Note 7's have USB-C 3.1
Actually, disregard that... I just had a look around, apparently it varies from one chipset to the next. I'm guessing the Qualcomm Snapdragon models may have 3.1 and Australian Exynos models 2.0, but not 100% sure.

See, i thought they were all the same until i started digging around as well. Now im confused.
It would be nice to think that being the latest unit it would have 3.1, but i guess it depends on the chip handling it......and in saying that, dont the Exynos chips run better than SD? Im not tech savvy with that so i could be completely wrong in my thought process.

They are both very close in performance, but in majority of videos comparing the Exynos & SD variants of the Galaxy S7 the Exynos comes out as the better performer, although I did see one video that the SD variant won, so not sure what was going on there. The bigger difference it seems is that Qualcomm releases always up to date source code which is needed to get all components of their platform working on AOSP, Samsung does not, so many people tend to like the SDs more for this reason. But in the US the bootloaders are locked down by the phone carriers so they can't modify the software on them anyway.
