How's the phone in 2021? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hello, I'm planning to upgrade my 2018 mid-range phone to a refurbished (fully original) S9 for a good price. But, how's the phone in 2021?
Edit: S9+ comments are also appreciated.

Samsung dropped support for SGS9 so there is no point in buying this phone right now if you want to use official rom. If you are prepared for some AOSP on Samsung you do not have some apps and IME services because of samsung's propitiatory implementations. Although, it's decent phone with amazing display and astonishing camera but after 2,5 year i REALLY NEED to change battery if I want to use my phone more than 5h.

I'm still unsure since new mid-range phones still don't offer the build quality the S9 has (actually they gone worse), or some of them won't be getting 2 year software updates (which makes them stuck in android 11 lol). But in the other hand, s9 stuck with android 10.
Is there any OneUI port from S10, S20 or S21? If there is, how are they? I couldn't see any OneUI port on XDA but maybe it's me being blind.
What do i lose if i use roms. For example, is speaker quality same as stock, or display?

Worth upgrading to S9+ form S7 Edge?

Hi!
As you saw from my question I am wondering whether it's worth upgrading to S9+ from S7 edge or should I wait for the Note 9 or even S10? What do you think?
Also.. Will there be good development on this device? :fingers-crossed:

Well it was well worth going from my s7 edge to s8 plus so yes of course going to s9 plus is worth it.
sent from my Pixel 2 XL or Note FE
i'll be upgrading to the s9+ from the s7e, mostly because my plan runs out conveniently on the 15th.
i'm not as pumped by the actual phone yet, but the size, screen and 6gb RAM and battery bump in the s9+ looks good and it will be great... until March 15th in 2020 when i'll get the Note 12 / T2 / S11 Ultra, whatever that flagship is.
I had thought about the iPhone X/ Razer phone, and in an ideal world, i'd get either one instead, but the razer is not available locally and getting updates or repair/support for grey market phones is abominable in ... Australia.
(And, i'm not really invested in apple tech, despite having a now 5 year old ipad, and an iphone 4 that technically still works ... and basically everyone i know, has iPhone or Samsung)
s9 arrives later in the week, the s7 edge is still a perfectly great phone, until my daughter smashed it.
any excuse to get a new gadget.
Rom advice? I see Alexandr is makiung dev base, may stick with that stock feel, yet the freedom to use magisk modules. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
S7 and S9 are great ,but i prefer the S9 .
It's all worth it .

Will We Ever Get to See the A3 Again?

I bought the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) a year ago and to this day I think it is the perfect phone. I waxed poetic about it for several thousand words on my blog today.
In 2018, we saw the A3, A5 and A7 replaced with the A8, a device falling between the A5 and A7 of last year. But what about the A3? To start with, it wasn’t even released in all parts of the world, and now it’s been shelved completely. I know the argument, that there simply aren’t enough takers for a compact device, but boy would it have been lovely to see the line progress and improve with time, while keeping the same dimensions.
What do you guys think? Did you want to see an update to the A3 as much as I did? Which phone will you update to if your A3 were to stop functioning today?
Nice blog post (I used GSMArena like you with common settings). I agree on you. This phone is (nearly) perfect and it is really a shame that no brand understand the need for a compact smartphone.
Unfortunately, it is not perfect for me since I really like/need notification LED. Another default is the lack of B28 (LTE, used in France) unlike A5 or S8.
So if I had to use another phone, it would be the S8 (I don't use fingerprint) because of notification LED & B28.
But for now I don't need B28 and for notification LED replacement, I use an app called "Glimpse notifications" (with recurring notifications every 30 seconds without much battery drain). So I'll use this A3 until I find a deal on S8.

Planning to Buy OnePlus 5t in 2019?

Hello guys
Sorry for the long question.
I am very confused these days, i sold Redmi Note 7 some days ago but now i don't understand that what device is perfect for me in my low budget. I have some devices in my mind:
1. Pocophone F1
2. Realme 3 Pro
3. OnePlus 5T
What i need:
I really like to install different roms on my deivce, occasionally gaming and most of the time watching movies etc.
Why i am not able to decide ?
1. Pocophone F1
Big notch taking over 70% of status bar. Heard / saw different threads claiming that the devices has touch screen / hardware issues.
2. Realme 3 Pro
Realme 5 Pro also available around the world but not in Pakistan. In Pakistan only option so far is Realme 3 Pro. Overall phone seems to be a good deal. But there is no Android development.
3. OnePlus 5T
This device is my most favorite device. Do you guys recommend me to buy 5T in 2019? and i also want to now, that is there any common hardware related issues to check for before buying?
Looking for response from you guys.
Plenty of ROM support and easy methodology to tamper, if you aren't a fan of OOS which is quite good anyway. Updates are still being released quite frequently through the beta.
Bought mine on release, coming up on 2 years ago now. Only complaints I have hardware wise:
-charging port can be finicky, but I need to clean it.
-camera is very average (but GCam mod with root + camera library dot fix performs very well)
I don't see myself getting a different phone for at LEAST another year and a bit. Take of that what you will.
I bought oneplus 5t 2 weeks a ago and i would say buy the damn phone you won't regret it, previously i was using samsung a50 but was not satisfied with the performance, oneplus 5t is blazing fast, go for it
Good phone but two things that suck
Vibration motor is horrible. It's so weak that I can't even hear it most of the time
Camera quality out of the box is just average
This two things didn't seem to be important to me in the past but you do notice the difference after using the phone for 2 years
In my opinion 5T is still beast but official beta support had dropped
Not that much custom ROMs available (many maintainers and developers switched to op6 or higher models)
Better try to buy op6or6T
Although open beta has been stripped for the 5t I'm still more than happy with my 5t. I even prefer OOS over the custom ROMs because it's really fast, stable and the gesture control kicks ass and is way better than that Google thing. Plus have in mind that OP already confirmed Android q. It may take a while but for now OP is still going strong with security patches. As long the battery is fine so am I.
Dear all,
I have removed some off topic posts from this thread. Please post with manners and contribute to the discussion. Thanks.

The Pocophone has larger battery and an IR scanner which is amazing for face recognition. But the screen is not good as 5T's.
Oxygen OS is probably the best out there. It is light and so fast and allows so many customizations. I bet you won't be bothered with custom ROMs!
Snapdragons 835 and 845 don't differ much either.
I'd go for the 5T if I found both at similar price.

Custom ROM chances?

Hi dev,
Why aren't there many custom ROMs for samsung s20+ Exynos or s20 series devices?
I feel oxygen os 11 would look great on s20 series devices.
Is there any component of device causing no custom ROM development?
Well... I had an exynos Note 10+ and the development for that phone was pitiful and was why I sold the phone. Thinking of buying an S20+ but only if I see some active development or at least plans
Well as phones ar getting more expensive and rooting less viable, I really don't see a bright future for custom rom development on future samsung phones.

Agree, valid reasons for rooting are evaporating. With app based options offering solutions and Samsung making it more and more challenging it's hard to justify. Especially when one considers the prices for a top shelf device and a very real possibility you'll brick your smartphone. Firmware and CSC's are much more complex than 5 or 10 years back, it's not like the good old days when rooting was more straight forward. With that being stated much of the push for rooting comes from users who fail to investigate which device is best suited for their needs, even within the same model line.

Buy an OP phone if you like that, the S20`s have different hardware so most likely not possible.

Poco m2 pro in 2021

Hi, i want to buy this phone for my father, is it still worth to buy this phone in 2021?
Does this phone have google or miui dialer, call recording is necessary for him?
It is still a great phone and really really value for the price. Especially during these Big Billion sales the prices have come down to bare minimum I would say. Plus yes, it does have miui dialer and messages hence call recording and even auto call recording are there.
But one thing to note is that Poco is not providing many updates to the phone and at present the miui 12 with android 11 on phone is stable with only minor bugs but I cannot be sure with the upcoming updates will it break or not. Hence I would strongly recommend a Realme or other brand since it's for your dad. He will be better of staying away from miui.

I am new to these forums. I was wondering if I buy this phone now, will it come with google dialer ?
(Just like, some laptop companies have announced that their old models will come with Windows 11 Pre Installed) ?

It will have Miui dialer. Google dialer has not been added to poco m2 pro till date hence it won't be added.
