You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.

Download & Guide:
1. Unlock your bootloader.
2. Download TWRP for the XT2071-5

4. fastboot boot twrp_smith_v1.img (you can fastboot flash recovery if you want but as touch is not working, doesn't make sense to install it yet)

6. Reboot to system, Enjoy.
Support:
Some help is available in this thread. This release is mainly meant for devs so I'll be providing limited help.

Yo, any chance you can build one for 11 too?
I updated my TMO unit to the softbank build and I'm assuming that this twrp is for 11 only?
I assume this works fine with an OTG mouse??

Yep this one is for 11, I haven’t tested with 10 nor with OTG, but I’ll test OTG in the morning.

Thanks for this! I think adb sideload is not working. Can't find any adb devices after starting sideload
I'm using a XT2071-4 not -5. Do you know what's the difference?

I have the -3. And running Android 10. Will this ever work for me?

Are you still working on this twrp?

Tested and confirmed sideload bug, will investigate in the near future. For now, push packages to /cache and flash from there.

Fastboot boot and test it. I don't own the XT2071-3 and never will so I can't speak to if it'll work on that variant. I only can speak to the device I own.

did u test it on the 2071-4?
any luck?

Thank you so much for making this!
I decided to void the remaining 6 or so months on my motocare warranty because I found I didn't like using an unmodified phone. This recovery works as advertised on my XT2071-3, and I was able to successfully extract the boot image to patch with Magisk.

Can you explain how... I have a -3 as well.. and when I fastboot twrp up it comes up for a moment then shuts off.. at one point i was able to connect thru adb with root.. .How would I extract the boot.img? Or can you post a rooted magisk with the latest a12? Please and thank you.

Well done!
Very nice! That was amazingly quick
All we need now is a custom ROM...
We also have root, as Planet Computers just uploaded a rooted boot-verified.img to be used in their official build!
Also, official bootloader & kernel source code have been released!
All I need now is my device currently 2306 should have it soon first thing I do is twerp hopefully we will have some Linux flavour by then.
Hi, just came across your post. Very good job! But I'm afraid you can't use gemini codename, because it's the Mi 5's codename. Just my thoughts

Gemini is the given codename for this device when this device gets roms the maintainer can decide on the codename to use from then on.

Twrp supports landscape mounted panels, but it doesn't support the ability to force portrait panels into landscape because it would require a ton of work to do.
I have renamed the device to geminipda to make sure we do not conflict with other devices.
Also working on bringing up cm-14.1, still have awhile to go though.
if you bringing cm-14.1 on gemini PDA , is possible port on UMI Z smartphone? processor is same.

Could be, i do not port to devices like that though. I have Gemini PDA booting cm-14.1 with everything but ril and camera working.
We want only good working ROM. but stock rom is bug bug bug
Thank you for your work on bring this to the GeminiPDA.
Just a note for those who were reading through and wondering how you get into Recovery from power-off. It wasn't mentioned at all in any of the posts.
From a power off state: The Google Assistant button on the side. Hold down, hold Esc/Power On until the boot logo goes away.
It might be obvious to some of us but I find it's helpful to document things like this for those who don't know these sort of things.

TWRP might never be as before and thats something we all have to accept. Google did some major changes and it will take some time to fix that.
I'm using my 7T now for more than a half year without fully working and stable TWRP. I still don't miss it. For root there are a few instructions and custom ROMs can be flashed with fastboot. Kernel can be flashed easily with Kernel manager. Let's wait and see...
For kernel flashing you need root.

Sure you will need to have root. but that's common and possible without TWRP.
Thanks so much to mauronofrio for that TWRP port!
Installed in few minutes.
Magisk installed with no problem.
Thanks dev!
Just installed magisk, too. Everything working like a charm!
Thanks mauronofrio!
I tried to root bybusing this twrp , i did the things mentioned below,
1.Unlocked bootloader,
2.Downloaded Magisk zip
3.Booted into Fastboot mode
4.Booted Twrp, fastboot boot Twrp name
5.Install magisk zip in twrp
6.Rebooted the device, but ended with bootloop

Spot the difference. I'm on Android 10 as well of course, soon on Android 11 and the official TWRP _09 branch supports this. Could you please explain the benefits of your unofficial version? I'd like to understand the facts before considering a test.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm getting the same error trying to build official TWRP for the mi 8 Pro.
EDIT: Turns out you can get around the error by removing the line: "TARGET_HW_DISK_ENCRYPTION := true" from your BoardConfig.mk but I'm not sure if it will be able to decrypt.

Hi nice to see we finally have a way to unlock the bootloader. I noticed your sources are based on andriod 10. Do you plan on updating it to andriod 11 or should they already work? The A51 5G is currently on 11. I'm interested in testing with compiling roms since I own this device.

You cant downgrade to unlockable bootloader
Update: It seems that the File Manager is 'Read Only', unless I'm missing something. There was no option to remove the 'Read Only' permissions. I am able to install zip files like normal.
