With the newer gen fire tablet with android 9+ installed, is it possible to flash AOSP GSI builds? - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Android Development

Can someone check with their fire device if it is possible to use GSI images via treble support? I tried looking around the forums and posts, but they're all about installing google play store and not GSI. Anyone mind running a quick getprop ro.treble.enabled in adb to see if it's possible?

C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot>adb shell getprop ro.treble.enabled
true
But i don't have the proper USB drivers to get the device to connect in fastboot.
Also i think the bootloader is locked, so you can't flash a GSI if it isn't signed. Not sure on that one though.

Has anyone tried resigning it with mtk's public key and flashing? mtk's key sits before amazons key in the key chain and is apparently signed with just public key (not private key).

maybe it need some kind of factory cable like this
Amazon.com: Factory Fastboot Cable by N2A (R) - Fix/Repair Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire HDX, Motorola Xoom & Phones : Electronics
Buy Factory Fastboot Cable by N2A (R) - Fix/Repair Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire HDX, Motorola Xoom & Phones: Read Electronics Reviews - Amazon.com

If it was that easy it would be done long ago. Factory cables are a historical relic for rooting modern devices.

[Q] My Kindle Fire HD does not power on

Hi all,
My Kindle Fire HD (model 001400) was semi-bricked when I tried to install a custom ROM instead of the Amazon native OS. I bought a factory cable and was able to get to fastboot (the screen showed a "Fastboot" logo with a little sign of traffic lights and a blinking green light animation).
I tried to follow some of the threads that showed how to recover (KFHD Restore Tool) but none worked. I think now that it was because after using the factory cable to fastboot I should have used a normal cable to adb/fastboot, but I'm not sure about this anymore.
Anyway, I used this thread
http://50.23.216.69-static.reverse.softlayer.com/showthread.php?t=2128848
And I tried to do the
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash bootloader kfhd7-u-boot-prod-7.2.3.bin
After doing that (succesfully according to the KF screen) the Kindle Fire HD is no longer turning on. Tried to charge it for a day, connect it to my PCs and Macs with a fastboot (factory) cable and with a normal cable, without success. No signs of life.
I've seen on the question 34 (Q34) of the FAQ that it seems there's nothing to do, but I wanted to make sure that there is really nothing to do now. I think this is a 2nd generation KFHD, but I'm not sure either. On fastboot the devices was recognized as Otter 1400 or something similar.
So... Any chance to recover it?

The fact that you don't know what device you have is a little disturbing. If your device said "otter" anything in fastboot, then you definitely do not have a Kindle Fire HD.
If that's the case, you flashed the wrong bootloader for your device and it is very unlikely that you will ever recover it.
The device IS a Kindle Fire, maybe not an HD. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether it's a first or a second generation. The only hint I've got is that "Otter 1400" (or something similar, again) string that the "fastboot devices" command gave as output. That makes sense, since the Model No. is D01400, which AFAIK is a Kindle Fire 7'' WiFi (2012).
Anyway, the fact is I probably tried to use the wrong bootloader, but I was expecting maybe the Firekit solution could be appropiate for my now not-turning-on device.
Can someone confirm the brick is a definitve brick?

Oh my...
Have a seat, my friend, because you're about to learn something...
In fastboot, if you were actually successful in sending the "fastboot devices" command (not possible on the HD), the output would be something similar to the following...
Code:
1234567890ABCDEF fastboot
...however, if you had a Kindle Fire HD7 and used the "fastboot getvar product" command, the output would be something like "TATE-XXXX-XXX". Respectively, the Kindle Fire HD8.9 would be "JEM-XXXX-XXX", the Kindle Fire 2 would be "OTTER-XXXX-XXX" and the original Kindle Fire would be "kindle".
Furthermore, only the original Kindle Fire and the Kindle Fire 2 (non-HD), have the model number D01400.
Now, whether you have an original Kindle Fire or a Kindle Fire 2 is still up for debate because you are clearly confused about what device you have in the first place. If you are lucky, and in fact have an original Kindle Fire, you will be able to restore it using Firekit. Unfortunately, considering the information available, I'm willing to bet that you have a Kindle Fire 2, and thus there is no way for you to restore your device.
Thanks for the clarification, that was perfect. I'm affraid I've got a Kindle Fire 2 then, so it seems there's nothing to do. Maybe in the future some method will appear to recover this second generation, who knows.
Greetings soupmagnet!

My 8.9 HD is stuck in boot loop ... not recognized when connect to PC

My thread title pretty much explains what happened after I tried uninstalling some pre-installed apps (using Clean Master) in my Kindle Fire HD 8.9.
My question to XDA kindle owners... is the potential fix for my device just a 10 dollar factory cable away? Can my device be restored in factory setting once I get in to fastboot and find the Android equivalent of Windows system restore?
Sidenote:
1) 2 days ago I succeeded rooting my Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with no issues. In that same day I installed setCPU to keep my device running at 1.5 Ghz. I admit... the only crazy thing I did with my device was attempting to uninstall pre-installed applications that came with my Kindle.
2) my desktop computer knows the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is being connected to USB... but a few seconds later it refuses.
Fastboot cables don't work on 8.9" models, you need to install the drivers when the device briefly is detected with the ones in my signature if it doesn't have them installed already. If/when they are installed you just need to so only turn the kindle off and unplug the cable and run "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" and when it says waiting for device plug the kindle in, it should then go into fastboot. From there you can restore it with kffa.

That's what it is supposed to do on the 8.9” model, you have to try to install the driver while it briefly appears. If you can't kffa might have something that will help, if not you can always do this from a Ubuntu live CD, which is easy because the drivers are built in, only thing you have to do is install the fastboot command from the repos, but that's easy as long as you use the 13.10 live CD.

Ah that's cause your on windows 8, you have to disable windows driver signature enforcement, look it up on Google, then try again. Also no offense but could you just tell me what the error is next time, I use the xda app on my kindle for the most part and I can't select those as links without opening it to my browser then copying and pasting it.

You need to disable the signature enforcement that both Windows 7 X64 and Windows 8 users have to deal with. This post covers it better than I can type it. http://www.fotoclubinc.com/blog/how...on-of-windows-7-printer-drivers-on-windows-8/
My status so far...
1. Install stunt513's driver with windows driver signature disabled..... check
2. run fastboot in command prompt ..... check (but "fastboot mode" logo on the screen is just there... not moving)
3. run KFFA 4.1.100 (RunMe.bat) ..... check
4. attempted to run 1. Device Diagnostics (Safe) >>> 1. Ready to Test ADB Communication
result...
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037
* daemon started successfully
No changes happening and kindle fire is still in "fastboot mode" logo.
I'm not sure if I should take the next step in attempting to restore the kindle fire (option 4 in KFFA 4.1.100) because I might hardware brick it for real this time.
When using kffa I believed there is a option or question it asks you about putting it into fastboot mode for you or something, you need to tell it not to because it sounds like its just hanging on a adb command that cant execute because its in fastboot mode already.

Kindle Fire First Aide Step 4: Find the RunMe.bat file. Right Hand Mouse click on RunMe.bat, select 'Send to', select Desktop (Create Shortcut). Now press the Left Hand Mouse button to create the Shortcut named RunMe.bat. Temporary disable the Android SDK.
The bolded red text above..... are you guys sure it's not a misplaced instruction? In my mind it sounds kinda totally off topic (or it should have been step 5... or something)
I having ever used it before, I assumed as long as you had java installed it was pretty straight forward as running the run me.bat as admin, I would assume the stuff in red means if have the android SDK to take it out of your paths temporarily.

I get the following error trying to install your driver: "The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation."
I'm on a Win7 32-bit system. After downloading your zip, I extracted the files to their own directory and right-click the android-usb.inf file, which gives the above error. Can you point me to a solution? Thanks.
You are supposed to open the device manager, find the device with a triangle next to it, usually will say jem unless its not an 8.9" device, then it would say something like otter2, or Tate, right click it and hit update driver and point it to where you extracted it, then it should install.

It shows as jem, but on power-up it appears so briefly that I cannot install the driver for it. From power-on to device appearing to disappearing takes 1-2 seconds.
Yea you have to be fast, this is why I stick to Linux... Kffa might have a driver install option that installs to the driver cache on windows so it would auto install the driver when detected, at least after you hit skip obtaining from Microsoft update. Not sure about that though as I have never used kffa.

KF2 + 2nd Bootloader + Do's and Dont's?

Hi All,
Today I should be picking up a KF2 (Kindle Fire 2nd Gen) today from a friend. And although I have experience with this device in the past, as I rooted one a while ago, and installed Google PlayStore bits and bobs for another friend... This was a while back.
A few months back, I read somewhere although cannot find it now... That Amazon have rolled out a serious Update to most Kindles (KF2, KF-HD, and possibally KF-HDX) that has updated the baseband/kernel to a certain version. Which prevents Unlocking, and tampering with it could cause the device to Hard Brick...
So was wondering, what is the best procedure to tackle this? Easy method to Root / Recovery??
And what does this 2nd BootLoader actually do?? Does it allow you to DualBoot both original stock Kindle firmware as well as second partition for Custom Roms??
Thanks, Lister
OK first off which kindle do you have, because a kf2 is. Of a 2nd gen kfhd. If its a 2013 kindle fire HD, don't bother with second bootloader because it will just brick it. If it is in fact a kf2 then here's what second d bootloader does. Basically we can't unlock our devices bootloader so 2nd bootloader is a workaround. It allows us to run our own unsigned kernels and custom recovery. Once we have that we can flash a custom ROM like cm. And no no dual booting, Amazon's os is too different from cm to be able to.
To install 2nd bootloader + twrp you must be rooted, suggest kindle fire first aid for that, there's a tutorial in the dev section for kf2 for installing second bootloader + twrp here.
Make sure you check the md5sum of the bootloader before flashing it so you don't risk hard bricking, also I suggest putting the ROM and its gapps on the kindle ahead of time if your are running 10.4.8 because it will boot loop into recovery after the process until you flash a different rom, so its easier to have the ROM o. Ahead of time rather than "adb push" it.

Hi @stunts513,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you, my friend didnt bring the device in until yesterday...
I can confirm that it is a Kindle Fire 2nd Gen (Otter2), and it is running 10.4.6 firmware/baseband...
I tried to root it in work, on my Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 based PCs, and unfortunately it wasn't detecting it, or working with the ADB drivers....
I tried at home on my Windows XP and Vista setup, and again wasn't detecting it. However it did detect on my Windows 7 setup at home (triple boot). This must of been the partition I used for my friends one many months ago... (although I found various Kindle related files on each partition).
Anyway, I got the damn thing rooted now, thankfully... and shall move onto the 2nd Bootloader thing... However, is there any other way, or easy way of doing this other than whats in that post?? I don't mind doing it, and will follow it again. However late last night I was losing the will to live as it was hard work getting to do things... (compared to other Android devices that are a breeze to do...).
I tried to backup my partitions on the Kindle what it says to do at the start, and it kept saying it couldnt find these on the Kindle... I read in the guide that it said I could download them from a website, but all I could see was scripts and not backup partitions... Is it really important to backup my own ones, or could I just download someone else's Kindle Fire 2nd (8Gb) model??
And yeah, is there any other way to get custom recovery / rom on, other than the original guide...?? - not gonna give up, just last night kept falling asleep trying to follow it... when things werent working and patiently waiting for things to happen/work... lol
Anyway, thanks so much for replying to my question, and for all the help you have given me to get me started... much appreciated!!
Thanks, Lister

As far as i know offhand that method for the kf2 is the only method, which is kinda sad because its the same manual method as the other hd's, and the hd's have fireflash, but fireflash never had the support added in for the kf2 for some reason last i checked. I wouldn't worry too much about the backups, once you run the dd command on the partitions to store them on the sdcard folder, then even if adb pull doesn't work you can always copy them over mtp. i don't like how adb pull works on windows. Only image i would be concerned with storing is the boot0block.
If i made some incorrect references its probably because i vaguely remember it maybe having a different command than the hd model, but the hd's backup command would work on a kf2 as well.

Rooting KF2
Can you give a list of the links that you used to root you KF2?
I've tried to connect to my with ADB but I can't get it to see my device. I can connect my KF2 to my WINXP machine, and transfer files, but I can't get ADB to recognize the device, and I can't get any root options to work. Any help would be appreciated. Ultimately I would like to install a new ROM like CM, but until I can do the basics, I can't get that done.
You should check to see if it has the driver installed for adb in the device manager, if it doesn't even show up as a adb device in device manager you probably haven't turned USB debugging on on the kindle itself.

Checked and verified that USB debugging is in fact turned on on my kindle.
Settings>>Security>>Enable ADB is ON.
Settings>>Device>>Allow Installation of Applications is ON
I still can't get adb to recognize my device.
I installed ADB from adt-bundle-windows-x86-20140321.zip if that makes any difference.
I had read in the forums that I might need a special cable for fastboot. Is that what I'll need to get?
For what it's worth, I just found and followed this tutorial:
EDIT: Well crap, this forum won't let me post the outside url. I guess if you search for "Setting up ADB driver for Kindle Devices" by David Isbitski" on developer dot amazon dot com, you will be able to find the tutorial
It was very helpful, and it was the first tutorial I've found that actually showed how to install adb windows drivers for the kindle fire.
In windows Device Manager >> Portable Devices >> Kindle is installed, then uninstall Kindle, as they are the wrong drivers.
In the SDK Manager
Go to TOOLS >> Manage Add On Sites
Go to the User Defined Sites tab
add the url found in the tutorial listed above, save and quit that window.
Back at the manager, do "Packages >> Reload" to update the list.
For the kindle fire 2nd generation, I had to expand "Android 4.0.3 (API 15) to find and install:
"Kindle Fire 2nd Generation"
Under Extras, install:
Amazon AVD Launcher (Windows)
Kindle Fire Device Deffinitions
Kindle Fire USB Driver
Once installed go to \extras\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver and run "KindleDrivers.exe"
You should then find "Device Manager >> Kindle Fire >> Android Cmposite ADB Interface"
You can then stop/start adb, then do a adb devices.
That is what worked for me!
New to the forum and trying to recognize what you are doing here......
I have a Kindle Fire 2nd Gen with 10.4.8 SW installed. Would like to dump a much newer Android version on it and looking for the correct path.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

(Finally figured out that you have to change permissions on the soupkit.sh to run as executable) In doing this I was trying to install Linux (which I've never used), tried Mint as suggested but was having trouble, moved to Umbuntu and during this time the Fire was in fast boot plugged in via USB so it seemed fine. This was over the course of a few days, on the last day while I was at work my wife or son move the laptop and Fire and the cable was unplugged so the Fire went dead.
Now it appears to be in a boot loop? The Kindle Fire flashes on then the screen turns off and it just repeats this. I left it unplugged for several days going it would discharge and boot but it seems to be stuck in this loop. I'm running Win 7 Home Premium and Linux, neither one can see the Kindle on the USB.
Is this thing a brick now or is there and way to recover? I don't have the factory cable but would gladly order one if it would help get passed this point.
Sorry so long, just trying to provide all info on my situation.
Thanks if you can help.
Did you retry the
adb shell
su
cd /data/local/tmp
./fbmode
exit
exit

Discharging battery is a very bad idea
see Frequently Asked Questions - Amazon Kindle Fire
Q30: Is it true that letting the battery die will reset the device and fix whatever problem I'm experiencing?
NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! The flash memory storage of the Kindle Fire is capable of holding data without ANY power until your grandchildren's grandchildren have their own grandchildren...probably even longer. Not to mention, a dead battery will cause much bigger problems than you ever had to begin with, on top of the problems you had to begin with. Whatever problem you're dealing with, it is always best to avoid letting the battery die at all costs.
Q31: Why is my boot logo flashing every 5-10 seconds?
You have a near dead battery. The most effective way fix it is to power the device down by holding the power button for 10 seconds, plug the device into a power source, then IMMEDIATELY hold the power button until it shuts off again. If it shuts off and stays off (no display, no led), let it charge for at least half a day. Otherwise keep trying, or get another battery.

for KitKat use TWRP 2.6.3.0 or newer, for Jellybean use 2.2.2.1--2.6.2.x
OtterX Roms require special step posted here OtterX ROM/TWRP/Bootloader [TWRP 2.7.1 2014-06-08]
Other Roms can just be installed in twrp like in [Video] How to install CM10.1 Jelly Bean 4.2.2 on the Kindle fire
Roms are posted here [INDEX] Kindle Fire Development
easiest way to change TWRP versions is use a flashable TWRP.zip from my list Kindle Fire Flashable Recoveries TWRP/COTR/CWM[2014]

I am having the same problem but my battery was almost fully charged. After I completed Step 5, and then entered the commands for step 6, the device just hangs at the kindle fire splash screen. After an hour or so at that point, I unplugged the device from my PC and when I plug it back in, it isn't listed correctly in the Device Manager. I am running Windows 8.1. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

I didn't get to try this but was ready to if needed.
As a follow up, I was able to hook up to a higher output charger and left it that way for a good hour and it came back on to what looked like fastboot.
In Windows I opened cmd and was able to push recovery in fastboot & got in to TWRP. I wanted to install CM11 OtterX so I followed the post that Hash has out.
Flashed the updated Bootloader and rebooted per the instructions but now it wouldn't get back into TWRP and couldn't boot into rom and ADB wouldn't connect.
After days of reading I decided to try the EEC Fix in the bootloader, that was successful and it put me in the new Fastboot screen. Once there I was able to connect in ADB and push the files to the SD card and got into TWRP, followed the instructions again from that basic point, converted the format from Amazon and was finally successful in getting the CM11 installed and booted.
Looking through the info I found an OTA from CM and now am running 4.4.4
Very excited to have a real tablet instead of the Fire OS.
Thanks for everyone's help. Reading and persistence pays off.
I did a reboot, but it is staying at the Kindle Fire boot logo. It is not proceeding past that to anything fastboot related. I ran the fastboot devices command and then I ran the command to push the recovery, but it is just sitting there at waiting for devices.
Also, when the device rebooted to get into fastboot, Windows 7 said it was unable to install the driver for it.
Any help would be awesomely appreciated!
Never mind! I figured it out by installing the driver that came with KFU.
If I want to install a KitKat ROM, what is my next step? I don't want you to explain me everything, but if you could lead me to another post or something, I would be grateful!

use the drivers from the KFU, in the updated the op.
fastboot commands will not work if drivers are not correct.

Which ROMs do you recommend? I'm trying to set this up for my brother-in-law, and I want to make sure it is going to be something remotely stable.
Thank you for your help by the way.

Bricked Kindle Fire HD 7 (2nd Gen), don't wanna buy a fastboot cable

I was restoring to factory settings through Cyanegon 13 and now it's been on a boot loop at the TWRP screen. I've done extensive google searches and a lot of the "solutions" require for my PC to recognize the Kindle when connected but it doesn't. Weird thing is though I go to device managers and it "recognizes" it there but not when I use command prompt etc. IS THERE ANY SOLUTION WITHOUT ME HAVING TO BUY A FACTORY/FASTBOOT CABLE?!
P.S. don't give me solutions that imply me having to use TWRP home screen because, again, boot loops at the "teamwin" part
