How to automatically turn on GPS with the screen locked, no root - Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Guides, News, & Discussion

Ok, this will be a guide how to turn on GPS with the screen locked, without rooting the device.
Short story, just go down to the numbered section.
As I got my self a new car with android auto (through cable) but no built in GPS, I was interested in getting the phone to turn on the GPS automatically when I steped in to the car. I have serached a lot and only found that it wasn't possible due to security reasons. I meen if I have android auto I don't want to fibble with the gps-settings every time I'm in the car, and I don't wan't it on otherwise to save battery. When I got my self an Galaxy S20 FE last week I tried out everything in the built in systems as I thought that if it would be possible it would be with a built in system to pass the security demanded by Android/Google.
I know you can do it rooting the phone, but as I use it for security apps that will stop working if I do that, it wasn't an opption.
And yesterday I found the way, using the built in Bixby Routines. It might be possible with other Samsung Galaxy models as well with Bixby, haven't tried.
1. Go into Bixby App (there is two ways getting into Bixby, through the app and through phone settings, but you do different things depending on how you enter).
2. Go to settings
3. Turn on "Use while phone locked"
4. Go out of the App
5. Go into the phone settings
6. Go into "Advanced features"
7. Turn on "Bixby Routines"
8. Go into the submeny "Bixby Routines"
For me, I wanted the GPS to turn on when the phone automatically connected to the cars Android Auto system through bluetooth, so that is the routine I will describe here.
9. Set up a new routine with the "IF-section" defined to "Connected to the Cars bluetooth
10. Define the "Then-section" to Location-On
11. Don't do any changes to "When routine ends". That will reverse the Location to off when the phone disconnects from the car.
12. Click next end name your routine end click Done.
Some times, especially when I connect the phone to the usb-cable from the car before the phone has connected to the bluetooth system, the routine doesn't execute. Time will tell if it will happened a lot. Of course you should be able to switch the IF statement to anything that fits you.

go paste this into other forums too. (I don't even drive, but I like helpfulness)

Thats why I wrote it here, google indexes this forum very well. So if anyone google it in a while, they will find the way in here.

I have Automate, but haven't tried it on my new phone. But as I understand it, you will have to root the phone to make it work with Automate?

Off memory, only for certain permissions requiring root. For what you want to do I don’t think its root required.

Lollipop and NFC unlocking

Just upgraded my N5 to Lollipop and was thinking of setting up Smart Lock from when I’m at home and at my desk at work using NFC tags. I use a four number PIN to unlock my phone, which is getting a little tiresome.
Is this even possible? Not sure what the range of a tag is – would I have to place the phone on it or would it be enough if I put a few tags around the house? Also how to I go about programming the tags to unlock – can I use the phone for this?
Thanks
You need to tap the back of the phone with it, and then you still need to swipe the screen to unlock it, you set it up by going to settings>security>smart lock>trusted devices
Thanks for clarifying. Didn't realise that I have to tap a NFC tag, so that won't be suitable for my purposes. Smart (Un)lock with a Bluetooth device should work though, and easily cover my flat. I could buy something small and cheap that I can always leave plugged in, acting as my personal unlock device - any ideas? Probably won't even be using it, perhaps a pair of Bluetooth speakers?
As for having to swipe to unlock - that's perfect and exactly what I'm looking for. Just want to avoid entering a PIN when at home/work
I'm using my smart watch as a trusted device and then, no need to unlock, just swipe up.
You could use something like this ring if you like wearing rings.

I've noticed that with a smart device setup (have the Bluetooth in my car setup) that while the device is connected it does not go to sleep. I would expect some pretty nasty battery drain if you're always connected to a device. My phone battery lasts the day with pretty moderate use with 15-25% left. If I kick it up a notch then it seems not last the whole day, or at least need charging at the end of the day.
I wonder if people see the battery drain with the smart devices connected all the time...

These are crap, you have to fiddle a LOT to get the phone to "see" it.

This would indeed be the easiest solution to the “problem”, but I'm just not into smart watches… seems like yet another device I have to check and I want a watch that lasts for years on one charge. Speaking of smart watches, one of my colleagues was just handed the developer edition of the Razer Nabu at a conference – that’s definitely something I’d consider getting for my better half who walks a lot at work. I has some interesting functions apart from the usual step meter.

Thanks for the suggestion, but rings just aren't my cup of tea. Maybe a cheap BT speaker such as http://ebay.to/1tdepnM would work? I could leave it plugged in at all times in a hidden spot and just never use it.
Regarding the device never going to sleep - that must surely be a bug? Or the worst design decision for a while. Have you tried other BT devices?

Fantastic, thanks! I'll give this a spin right away
Edit: works like a charm here at work. Got the smart lock message upon the first unlock, subsequent unlocks are just a swipe away
I was so excited to finally have a use for my NFC tags when I heard about the Smart Unlock feature.
First thing I did was put a NFC sticker on my vehicle dock and added it as a trusted device. Sure enough, the phone doesn't ask me for an unlock pattern; great! HOWEVER, there is just one little problem.... After unlocking, I'm presented with the "New tag found" full-screen message which you have to manually close EVERY SINGLE TIME!
What's the story here? I've done some digging, and there's even an Xposed module to disable this message. This simply cannot be the way that Google intended for this feature to work.... Any ideas?

Thanks all the same, but I still think that there has to be a simpler answer here. Using a third-party application (or two!) to mask the problem cannot be what Google intended.
Google intended for NFC to be used to transfer between devices... The tags are more of a third-party support. Download Trigger, and all you have to do is register the tag. You can even set it up to do things like launch your media player, activate Bluetooth, turn up your volume, etc.
I used an expired transport card which has an NFC chip. Stuck it on the car cradle and works just fine. No need to click away any message after the initial pairing

That may be what was originally intended, but Google has since added other features that are built in. For example, you can write a WiFi access point to a tag and it will now connect automatically WITHOUT the need for third party apps like Trigger. I still don't believe that a third party app should be required for smart unlock to work as intended.
I'm starting to think that perhaps it is the type of tag I'm using, or perhaps there is a "null" record that can be written to a tag which will prevent the built in reader from popping up.

I'm not sure why you're so against the app, but regardless, you should try it out. Use it just to write to your tag. Uninstall the app afterward. Should still work as you want it to. I have one in my car that I configured with Trigger (when it was still NFC Task Launcher). Haven't had the app installed on the last few phones I've owned, but it still works as intended - turns on my Bluetooth, ups the media volume, and launches Play Music.
As far as your tag, I believe you are correct. I vaguely remember a similar issue some years ago where the tag kept prompting with that empty message.

It's not that I am against the app (or any of the others in the Play store)... And you are 100% right, there's a lot of functionality in those apps, and it can certainly solve my issue. It's just that when Google adds a feature like this, they don't *require* you to download an after-market app for it to work. And a full-screen popup whenever you approach an NFC tag set as a "trusted device" literally BREAKS the feature in my opinion. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it and find out what I'm doing wrong.

Do you have some kind of app installed which performs actions upon touching an NFC tag (eg trigger)? I had the same messages pop up every-time, but once I installed an app and related a "display on" action to it, the messages stopped. If you don't want the tag to do anything just let it do something trivial, like enabling mobile data (which is probably enabled already anyway when you're driving). I hope this works for you.

Freeze Tags.apk with TiBu. Profit.
Nfc Tools
What your phone does when you touch an NFC depends on the URI that is written on the tag. You can easily check that by downloading NFC tools and scanning the tag in question. If the tag is writable and you want nothing to happen when you touch it with you phone, try writing following URI to the tag with NFC Tools: bad://access/development

Music.apk app opening always at startup

Hello
when my head unit starts, it always opening Music app that I really don't like...
how can I prevent it from running? there no option to disable the app (via settings), the device is not rooted so I cannot uninstall it or freeze it...
please advise (info on my head unit is attached)
thanks
Also interested to know how to do this. In my case the radio app starts automatically, which is pretty annoying because it starting on a frequency that we do not have broadcast on (87.5 Mhz). Which gives you a really noicy start on your drive...
Thanks
I've know it's possible only with root, but it seems there's no way to connect the kit for a laptop for rooting...
Can tools like OneClickRoot or similar work perhaps? Tried to contact seller of head unit, but do not quite understand the more technial aspect of android or programming of it.
Oneclickroot supposed to work, but nothing is happening when I plug the unit to my laptop... I've ordered a male-to-male usb cable to try maybe the rear usb ports will work... Waiting for eBay package...
You can root the 4.4 units by just using a specific password, check the Wiki.
Also you can disable apps in 4.4 without root (not all apps can be disabled tho).
The headunit will start playing whatever source it was last playing when it was turned off, so you can exit the radio app if you'd like, also it shouldn't start at 87.5 unless you left it on that freq, make sure the acc and constant power wires are correct and you aren't resetting the unit.
@jakejm79 mine is 4.1.1 not 4.4...
Hey,
I've finally managed to root the device!!
Instructions
* On the device, download `Root Master 2.1.1` on this URL: Root_Master_2-1-1.apk
* Make sure internet connection is active, `Root Master` downloads instructions depending on the device you have
* Open `Root Master`, refuse the update (last version of root master will not work)
* Click the big button where it is written “ROOT”
* Wait, it will ask you to install an app, install it (otherwise it will keep you asking that)
* Wait again, at the end a message popup, click the purple left button, it will reboot the device and install SuperUser (right button is for rating)
* Your device is Rooted !
Pretty easy !

So I did managed to freeze Music.apk using titanium backup.
now I'm searching for the best music player (any suggestions beside Poweramp?)
and also I need to find some player that can run automatically when unit is starting and resume from last playback...
and it seems the wheel control buttons are not working with any but the native music app (the one that I was freezing)
thanks

App launch...

My previous Huawei phone had some extra power/app management settings but in this new EMUI it seems expanded and more difficult to understand.
What I really want is to just let apps do what they want or let Android manage them. It seems, though, I either have to let Huawei manage them automatically or manually manage them by those three settings (allow auto start, allow start others, allow background). Is this correct? Am I missing something on this?
I also disabled the power usage notices that come up for apps (per app). Wish there was a universal disable for that.
The manual adjustment screen.
Are you running a L29?
On my older Huawei phones, I always turn everything on. I only have the apps I need, and I trust that none of them are malicious, so I turn them all on.

That is kind if my thinking too, but the feature wording is awkward. I am not clear, if I just turn auto to manual (for all) then does that let them ignore Huawei's thing? Also, it seems any new app defaults to automatically controlled.
It also isn't real clear on that second setting page, the manual controls, does that toggle on mean manual control (not Huawei) is on or does it mean auto (Huawei) control is on? In other words, does that toggle mean yes the app can do what it wants or no it can't?
My current thought is that if auto is off on the first page and I use the second page grant apps the permissions that I want (those checked can do that thing) then apps will run without Huawei interference and according to their own setup and whatever Android limitations exist (and of course, whatever limitation those checks and unchecks would imply).

Yes it is awkward how they word it. Huawei software kind of sucks. On older phones it was very aggressive with permissions and killing processes. Believe it or not, this has become easier over the years.
If you have hundreds of apps, then maybe pick and choose what you want. If your like me who only uses maybe 20 or so core apps, then I'd turn them all on.
On my AL00, after the update, the list is no longer there. You need to go into battery usage and then click on the individual app, then app launch.

Android app for Galaxy Watch

When I get to work, I set the sound mode of my Galaxy Watch to "Vibrate" to not bother people around me, and set it back to "Sound" when I leave. Every... single... day... It's annoying.
Yes, I know, the "Do not disturb" has a schedule feature but it's like turning off the watch. I do want everything to work except for sound.
Being a programmer, I wanted to write a watch app to set sound mode on a schedule but I never could connect to the watch. I had Debugging enabled, used a static IP, port opened in my router (even tried DMZ) and disabled Windows Firewall. When I clicked "Scan" in Tizen Studio, the watch was visible but it was impossible to connect to it. I'd also tried with the SDB command line but got the same result. I gave up (no wonder Tizen apps are hard to find).
It then occurred to me that if we can set the sound mode from our phone, it means that I could write a phone app to automatically set the sound mode of my watch. Is there an API for that?
Develop the app that schedules settings changes! I use an app on my phone that changes settings based on time and place, and it's VERY useful.
Yes there is an api, and Samsung provides the IDE for developing and testing apps for Tizen on the Galaxy Watch:
https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch
The issue is not with the volumes of the phone. I use an app for that.
What I want is to control the volume of my Galaxy Watch using my phone, just like Samsung's Wear app does. If Samsung can do it, we can too. All we need is some API to use in a phone app.

Yep. I know what you meant. I only brought up the app(s) for phones to point out that there are apps that change setting based on time and/or location, and that the same idea could be applied to the watch. (Why not?)
Actually, what you said in the first post is that what you want is to control the volume of your Galaxy Watch with a SCHEDULE. Why would you pull your phone out of your pocket to control the volume of your watch when you can control the volume of your watch with your WATCH? I mean, it's already right there on your wrist, right? And the watch is designed to control the phone, not really the other way around--but the Samsung phone-side watch app can change the watch settings, so maybe there is an exposed api for that too, but I wouldn't bet on that--you're probably gonna need a watch app to change watch settings. Just make an app for the watch that schedules settings changes. If it's good, I'll buy it, for the right price.
There is an API -- I supplied the link. Here, I'll Google search for some more of them for you:
https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch/develop/sdk
https://developer.tizen.org/ko/foru...tings-programmatically-wearable?langswitch=ko
https://developer.tizen.org/develop...n/device-settings-and-systems/system-settings <--- GETTERS AND SETTERS!!!!
Or, you could try typing this into that Google dealio: "tizen studio change watch settings" then press the "Google Search" button. it's wonderful!
---------- Post added at 06:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:36 AM ----------
Also.... after reading quite a few posts in this galaxy Watch section, I can guess that you won't find many developers that have done any Tizen-app programming for this watch in here. You might be one of the first ones.
As said in my original post, I tried to develop an app for the watch but never could connect to it. I gave up.
I'm looking for something like this, too. I use Macrodroid to control my phone settings based on location and time, and like you, I would like to be able to switch the watch between sound and vibrate mode based on what happens on the phone. When I'm switching my phone to vibrate only, I want my watch to switch as well.

Disable Android Auto

I have a OnePlus 7 pro phone, with Android 10, and my car is has an XTRONS head unit running the Malaysk rom with Android 9.
Does anyone know how to disable android auto from starting every time I connect via Bluetooth? None of the posts (solutions) online work, or are even available for me to try (menus aren't there, etc.).
Help?!
how did you even get it to work via bluetooth to start with!
Great question! I didn't do anything specifically to enable it. But every time I Bluetooth connect to my head unit, it starts Android Auto on my phone. DRIVING ME NUTS.
Is this a OnePlus-specific feature?
In XTRONS the Android Auto is called MultiPlay. There is a way to disable MultiPlay. settings -- car -- Factory settings(126) -- other -- car play --Choose "no"--apply-- Exit -> reboot by holding rst hardware button for 10s.

Ok, could be, but in my Xtrons headunit it's acting like Android Auto though it's called MultiPlay, and working fine. Android Auto, as an app is not visible in the app-overview. Why should that be this way?
@Klussenpunt - Thanks for the insight! I found the setting under Factory Settings, and turned it off, but my phone still does the same thing. I have taken these (extreme) measures with no luck:
Disabled the factory setting (as you pointed out)
Unpaired my phone and deleted it from the head unit
Booted my Android head unit into recovery, wiped EVERYTHING and restarted
Verified that the factory setting is still set to No/Off
Re-paired my phone
I still get Android Auto launched on my phone when I connect. UGH.
Does anyone have any other thoughts on why this keeps happening?

Have you tried removing the cache and memory from the Android Auto app in your phone, after that you can disable Android Auto making contact with new Android Auto requests.
@Klussenpunt - That idea (removing cache/memory) was what got me to my final answer. It dawned on me that if I could find the "app" in my android settings (because Android Auto doesn't show as a normal app, it is hidden) then I could disable it.
Sure enough, I was able to get to the list of apps and services installed, found it, and did two things:
Removed all cache and storage
Disabled the service
Boom! Now when my phone connects via bluetooth, the Android Auto mode does not start up.
Thanks soooo much!

On my Samsung Note 9, the app is just listed as Android Auto in the normal apps. Depending on your device, you may have to check the option to view all system apps in order to see and disable it?
