What apps and why? - Motorola Edge Themes, Apps, and Mods

My phone is pretty barren as far as installed apps go. A lot of what I install is utility because apps can't be trusted, nor can the manufacturers. Because I don't use Google apps, I have to find alternatives for any functionality prevented by this choice; namely backups. In any case, lemme introduce my question by providing example.
My launcher choice has changed because Lightning no longer did it for me on android 10. I bought Nova a long time ago and went with it for a while on this edge, but, am currently using lawnchair and I'll stick with it. It's got what I need, specifically the ability to put my 'app drawer' into tabs or folders and to hide apps. So I have 3 folders: fun, office, and utility. Also, the blur background is pretty kickass.

In Fun: I put the camera in there, gallery, stuff like that. I have installed 2 games: simple solitaire collection - I play klondike in the mornings, when I'm, you know - TMI - loosing a pound. I also installed smash hit - so I can smash glass when I have a minute. If I think of it... I installed elementary because I'm a nerd for the periodic table of elements. Also in the fun folder is Infinity for browsing reddit, but, I rarely do, because, well, fuk'n reddit. I installed musicolet to play the tunes. It put a play button in with the tiles and I dig it.
In the Office tab I put messaging, FX, which is the file manager I have been using since, well, ever. I use acalendar+ and it's in the office folder, too. I use calendar import/export to get any backup ics file back into the system. I use Aegis for that two-factor auth we need. It's fine. For browsing from my phone, if I do it - I use firefox focus because bromite kept losing my bookmarks. Pffft. I use keepass2android because I sometimes need passwords and I have been using keepassxc since ever. You should, too. I use Nextcloud so I can take a pic in the field and it's on my box at home. Nextcloud is pretty awesome - I put my keepass passwords file into the shared nextcloud folder so I can have passwords wherever, too. I have sms backup and restore to maintain the call log and restore it when I flip roms, or start from scratch. Geometric weather is installed too, for the weather. It's opensource and has that pretty, so, I dig it. I use silence for texting and it's in the office folder, too.
In the Utility folder: 3C all in one, for backups which I rarely use and to tweak the cache on the sdcard. Other stuff as necessary or out of curiosity. Of course, adaway is installed for those ads (I also have pi-hole on my lan). I use App Manager to block trackers and whatnot, it's a cool app. I installed Aurora store, f-droid, and sometimes aptiode. No gapps on my phone. Since I build, I use fraction calculator plus on ocassion. I installed quicktiles because it's kickass, and I still use SDmaid because it's kickass, too. FOr reasons. Of course, magisk, and busybox pro.
As I wrote, I don't install a lot of apps. It's not that I don't want to, I just don't really look around for apps to install for whatever function/purpose. I sometimes have other apps installed: mupdf, newpipe, notebook (zoho), simple notes, protonmail, vlc, voice recorder, a whip (hilarious), I usually install and use AFWall+, sometimes I use davx5, and maybe an estimate generator. If I'm on stock, I definately install edxposed for gravitybox.
What sort of apps do you have installed and why?

I basically use the almost near stock Android that Motorola uses so about 95% of my apps come from the Google Play store. I do have f Droid and I can basically download any APK files or apps you have to give Chrome and Google files permission to download from unknown sources. Which really hasn't been an issue yet because everything that gets downloaded onto my Motorola automatically gets sent and scanned by Google Play protect. I do have one app that I paid for that's awesome but that's downloaded onto a different Android device it allows me to mess around with my phone and it does some really unique things that usually requires a PC multiple USB drivers and downloads it's called bugjaeger premium

I don't know what I had installed for this to happen, last programs I installed from the market before this happened was two airhorn apps. It added fake search and market widget. Changed my homepage URL.
I thought this happening us pretty wild on a cell phone.. I also have bitdefender security installed.
So I don't know what gives. Thought I post to give heads up.
.: sent from my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch :.
bit defender is about worthless and is a resource hog to boot.
I just noticed the Home page in Stock Browser changed to the same.
Did not install any new apps from Market or anywhere else in about a week, just did some updates yesterday.
I have Lookout installed, will do a full scan and look around in TiB for any new apps installed (by Date)...
Weird
It's probably a library packaged within an app that pushes ads and garbage to your device. MP3 Downloader is one of the biggest offenders in sending random ads to your notification bar even when you're not using the app.
This is your best bet in finding the offending app: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.denper.addonsdetector&hl=en (Addons Detector)

Badass thanks for the links
.: sent from my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch :.
My browser was redirecting to: "http://start.infospace.com/?sourceid=6&app=13]....".
Ran 'Addons Detector' and 'AirPush Detector' to find out if one of these AirPush addons is in one of the apps.
With Addons Detector I used the filter 'Push Notifications', did not detect anything.
Had to clear Cache and Data in Settings>Applications>Internet to get back to be able to set my home page to google.
Now after a reboot, so far so good. Still need to figure out what rogue app did this!
[EDIT] Found this thread:
http://androidforums.com/android-ap...rt-infospace-com-has-hijacked-my-browser.html
always always always read a ton of reviews, download count and permissions carefully.
i wont even touch stuff like fart or airhorn, downloading apps(wallpapers,ringtones,mp3's) for this very reason. also another reason to carefully and frequently logg and monitor system activity and background activity. this is also why i strip down my system folder, etc to avoid any risk... every app running could be seen as a potential victim of an exploit. so far my paranoia has led to absolutely no problems, although i have seen some strange activity before for instance. infinite black a game i used to play would always be running in SERVICE mode in the background NOT cached this would be the type of behavior that should warrant removal.
My wife got some airpush crap on her phone from the latest update to the LivingSocial app. She uninstalled it and the notifications have seemed to go away. :fingerscrossed:
Always mark apps using airpush as malware, one star and say so in the comments to discourage devs from using it.
I guess that we are finally starting to see the downsides of Google's quick app approval process (as compared to iOS). Let's hope that the big G does something to thwart this nonsense sometime soon, but in the meantime, the best weapon on our side is knowledge. Make sure you know which app is causing this unwanted behavior, help your friends learn how to detect which app is the culprit, and urge them to uninstall/rate as needed.
I've only ran into one so far, MP3 Downloader, which was promptly uninstalled despite it's generally awesome usefulness.
I can't wait until root apps start messing with the hosts file. That's when the really fun redirecting starts!
Install and use these:

I'm also one of the victims for the start.infospace.com malware and im using the international GS2. My suspect is that i got infected after i installed this app called "Deal or BE Millionaire". Search shortcut has been created on my homepage instantly after i installed that app (Deal or BE Millionaire). Few days later (normally i would use opera mini as my main browser), when i opened up the stock browser, i was directed to the start.infospace.com URL instead of my actual homepage which is google. I found it strange that my stock browser was hijacked so i looked around the web for insights and this was what i did which seems to resolve the issue. Delete all the shortcuts created by the malware app, reset the stock browser to default, and also go to manage applications and clear data for the infected app (in this case it was "Deal or BE Millionaire" for me), and finally uninstall the app and reboot phone.
Funny I'm reading this now as about 30 min. ago my wife installed a live wallpaper on her phone and an ad popped up on her home screen. I uninstalled the live wallpaper & it went away.
Not sure if this will help but should do. Gemini app manager which I got off the market will show you exactly what each app on your device can access and detects advertising code etc in them as well so should be able to help narrow down apps causing issues.
As regards ios approval process stopping malware, while it it is better at it than googles process you can still get malware on ios via the market as evidenced by the report at november www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15635408 as they changed the market last year and malware got on it undetected and was working on non jailbroken devices.
I hate spam but have been lucky and worst I had is those ones that send notification messages. I refuse to use apps that use that advertising method as to me ads should be in the app rather than spam your notification bar.

For the time being I can at least take comfort in the fact that removing any suspected malware, adware or supposed virus off our devices is an easy fix. Unlike my windows based pc.
I've pointed this out on another section of this site when I had my Evo: But why do antivirus/malware apps made for Android only scan an app after its been installed, shouldn't it be scanned prior to installation? Or am I missing something here?

AirDroid: For the MTP haters and people who want a better way to access their data

Honestly, i couldn't be more impressed with this app. Not only does it use no data since it goes through your wifi network, it transfers insanely fast. I transferred a 200MB wmv file in under a minute. like most of you i have had some MTP issues where things have transferred very slowly, and this was much faster.
Additionally, where as MTP will sometimes load no thumbnails of your images making it very difficult to find which one your looking for, airdroid loads them all.
it also allows you to access your contacts, sms (and even send sms!), as well as full access to the entire internal memory. You can even see all of your installed applications as well as uninstall them (requires confirmation from the phone).
honestly, i'm incredibly impressed with airdroid, and considering it's free, even more so.
just figured since i've found this app so incredibly useful, i thought it would be best to spread it around here.
i'm not the developer or anything like that, i just found it and loved it. don't think i'll ever connect my phone to the computer again.
Thanks! Nice new tool,appreciate it

Are you running ICS? I only ask bc in the market description it says there are some problems with ICS. Any truth to this? With the ratings this app has gotten, I think I have to give it a go. Over 5000 of 6000 gave it 5 stars!

Been using it since I got the GNexus. Great app, haven't had any FC's at all. Only issue (not sure if it's universal) is that WiFi transfers do not work with the screen off for me, but beyond that, its great for quickly dropping in files to the phone. Great browser interface for the most part as well.
@nweaver: considering i'm posting this in the galaxy nexus forum, and i say i have a galaxy nexus, and the galaxy nexus can only run android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, then yes, i'm on ICS.
And yes they say they have problems with ICS, i haven't noticed any. And if you look at the reviews for the galaxy nexus then they're almost all 5 stars.
@Jebus: strange that transfers don't work with the screen off, they work just fine for me. transferred pictures and videos with the screen off. I noticed in the battery that while it's running it keeps the phone awake, for obvious reasons, it's possible that your rom or some app is interfering with it, and stopping it from having the phone awake even though the screen is off.
*edit* Oh yeah 1000 posts!
This looks great. Gonna download it and have a play. Wasn't too impressed with MTP so hopefully this is an adequate replacement. Accessing contacts and texting etc. is a nice extra perk too!
Just one bug so far...
The only bug I've found so far is that I fail to receive the new sms text notification on the web interface and that I have to manually refresh the conversation window - I'm using Chrome. Anyone else have this problem?
Other than that it's a great app - can't believe I didn't come across this sooner!
How is this AirDroid different from MyPhoneExplorer? Not beeing sarcastic just asking a legitimate question.

after looking around, airdroid looks a lot nicer, and runs in the browser instead of a separate app. aside from that they're very similar but myphoneexplorer has some more features for syncing and other things.
personally, airdroid is better for file management because of the simple windowed design, and full working thumbnails, and that it works right from your browser, so no extra application to install. aside from that, MPE is better in a few ways. i think it'll come down to your preference and what you need.
personally i'm using this for moving pictures and other files too and from the device since i can actually see thumbnails through this and not through MTP.
I was not aware that such things existed. My compliments to the chef!
I'm also a big fan of this app. A little slower than USB but much easier, especially in Linux. Two things I'd like to see though: Downloaded files, are in a generically named zip file, it would be nice for them to at least have an appropriate name. The other thing that would be nice is a Chrome and Firefox extension to automatically connect, so we don't have to type in a different address every time.
I was having major problems with MTP and downloaded this on my first night with my Gnex.
Amazing and saved me from much frustration. Awesome app!
Cant get airplay to work at all
just says waiting ... tried in IE and Chrome.
@wilbur-force: don't forget to activate it in the phone first. and it works perfectly in firefox.
It runs like a champ in chrome for me
Nook Color ICS Alpha for CM9 & AirDroid
My Dell Studio Win7 64 laptop has not been able to succeed in loading MTP or PTP drivers for my Nook Color ICS Alpha for CM9 from XDA. I was having to pull the SD card to transfer CM9 update zips to my NC. AirDroid saved the day (week).
Thank you!
Also loving this app.
The only thing that bugs me is (and maybe I am doing it wrong?) that when I upload for example a picture to my wallpaper folder on the phone Airdroid creates its own "wallpaper" folder for only the files I just uploaded instead of dropping the uploads into my already existing "wallpaper" folder that I initially selected as the upload destination.
So when I go into the gallery (stock) on my phone later on I have two folders named "wallpaper"
Anyone else running into this?
My "wallpaper" folder is a subfolder of my "pictures" folder on the root directory of the phone.
thanks ill give it a go
I use Websharing. It is a paid app, but let you use webdav protocol. (I can access phone storage as a network share).
Also, I can stop the service. Airdroid 1.0.6 removed this option. Waiting a fix to start using it to decide between webshare and airdroid.
i personally use it on my mac and it's very useful and save my a lot of time.

Good to know i helped. I'm trying to make it into a thread where people can come and get exactly what they're looking for to make their phones more enjoyable.
UPDATE:
Added some Galaxy S4 Add-ons (Wallpaper, S-Voice)
Note 2 Keyboard
APPS:
Pimp My Rom, Zedge, StreamComplete.
I reset my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 SM-T700 v6.0.1 and am having trouble getting my backed up data to be recognized in Kii. The folder is visible in my file manager, but not when I attempt to restore from within the app.
This has never been a problem when I've moved to a new device.
Can you offer a suggestion?

What apps simply don't work under KitKat?

Here's one:
I have an app called "Wakelock Detector". It's a fabulous app to show what apps are trying to keep the CPU awake. It makes it very easy to see what is eating the battery.
So, my battery was being eaten and the back of the Note was actually hot. I fired up WakeLock Detector to find out what was doing the damage. What I got when it fired up was a blank screen that said: "Access permissions was changed in KitKat, Now, advanced statistics need ROOT access "
So, this app is now worthless to me since KitKat installation. Any other apps that no longer work?
Multiwindow plus didnt work. Ive loved this app, but i cannot use anymore.
and flash player. Flash player is not working anymore. Some users find a method to play flash with Dolphin. But i use stock and boat only. That method dont work with stock and boat browser.
Chromecast and Muzei for sure. Muzei freezes when trying to adjust blur and chromecast gives a system.ui force close.
Zattoo TV is stuttering sometimes
Gesendet von meinem SM-P600 mit Tapatalk
FileSync does not work for me any longer as I had it sync directories on the micro SD card and it can no longer add or remove files. This means to me that this has become an expensive toy unless I root it. Since I can no longer have a working directory on external memory where I want it and have that directory it updated. Yet I used to be able to have a single file updated on my tablet and pc and show it on my phone. My phone will be the next victim in this as it is a Note 3 and now I'm not looking forward to it. For now if I edit a file on my pc I have to remember to copy it to a location that my tablet can get access to and remember to do that before I leave the house. Now I'm sure if I moved the directory to the internal storage it may be working again.
Astro file manager can no longer add or remove files from the micro SD card.
I understand that Google is trying to own/secure the OS and locking down or removing external storage - if I had their money maybe I would not be as concerned about data caps and would never be without internet access. Yet I do not have their money and I do have data caps, only wish we had cable internet service - could even live with DSL. Having the external memory card allows me to be away from my pc for longer periods of time - and now I need both my pc and my tablet in order to sync. The 2 main reasons I purchased this tablet was the Spen and the availability of the micro SD card. Now after KitKat half my reason is gone.
In regard to the apps that have problems, do they have problems only under 10.1 2014 (with KitKat upgraded) or also on PRO 12.2 with KitKat?

Why would there be? With the Pro's and N10.1-14 being identical h/w wise the s/w code base for 4.4 is most likely the same with features tweaked by device and region. There could be some individual ROM bugs but the next time any of the Pro's get an update new bugs could be introduced for them to. Every feature reported so far is identical to the Pro 10.1 with the exception of us not getting M-UX and the newer keyboard design. That and e-Meeting which is now the only Pro-specific add-on we don't have access to (for now).
Update: e-Meeting's available for download for those on 4.4.

I still use it with KitKat
The only app I've found so far is Recordable (a screen recording app). This app is definitely in its infancy, though, and the problem I'm having is that the non-root solution no longer seems to work (connecting it to a desktop to get around root). l'm sure something has changed in the non-root work-around. Strangely, Helium Backup non-root still works, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with all root work-around apps.
Documents To Go has an sure displaying menus accessed from options button.

I use the multiwindow mod (via the play store) to add the mutilwindow functionality to addition apps. Some have said this no longer works, others say it does. Can users of this confirm if it still works or not? Thanks!
just tried the free version and it's was running.
I tuned some apps to do same job without needed to buy full version, you can take a look here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2732203
my tab is very usefull with all my favorites apps available in multiwindow.

Adding mutiwindow function of "Multiwindow Apps Manager" or "MW Pen App Enabler" is still work. What i mean in my previous post is that quad view and floating dock function of "Multiwindow Plus" are not working. Some user said quad view is still working, but not work with my Note. I think they are luckier than me. and floating dock mode is not working i think...

What’s new in V7?
1. UI makeover

Classic features reserved and enhanced
Access to External SD card supported on 5.0+

Tags: Classify messy files by colored tags.
Favorite: Add frequently-used files to Favorite and quickly pinpoint them next time.
Memory Manager: Customize memory settings on your phone, for ROOTED phones only.
Super Downloader: Accelerate downloading speed, fast and resumable.
Recycle Bin: Remove files to recycle bin and recover them anytime you want.
Any feedback from you is appreciated and will be handled with caution. You can reply below the post or email [email protected]
if anything comes across your mind after trying.
Thank you so much!
Caution
The new Safebox feature comes with V7 may be incompatible with previous version, which may cause file lost. Please backup all files in V6 Safebox before starting to test.
Well. I like to try. But since I'm using a 10'' tablet, I will wait for landscape support.

Hi, thanks for your support, you can still use this version on a 10'' tablet device
I agree with Doppelhelix,
Testing it out. Will be a little inconvenient as I am using a 12" Galaxy Note Pro and use on my desk in Landscape mode all the time but will make sure it does everything I need it to do.

The new interface is fantastic, but I'm going to miss the dark theme. The Dropbox plugin didn't install automatically, but all the rest did. SMB client didn't pick up either of my servers. Other than that - so far so good! Great update!
Incidentally, I don't know if "Girl" is the best name for "Light User" in the Memory Manager.
Also I would have preferred to sign in to Gcloud with my username (instead of email). How can I change my profile picture?

Hi, thanks for your report and suggestion. I'm sorry you cannot change your profile picture but this will be fixed in the final release of this beta test
Now it's crashing every time I try to access "files" from the main screen. Also all of the plug-ins are now each separate shortcuts in my app drawer.

Hi there,
Would it be convenient for you to give us a crash log to recur the situation?
How to collect log?
1. Download and install the Log Collector: http://cdn.appnav.cn/logcollector.apk
2. When FC or crash happens in File Expert, quit and open Log Collector. It will collect log automatically.
3. Send us log.
The Clouds are optional, when you install any of them; it will appear on your app drawer.
Cheers,

Thank you for the precious suggestion.<br />
The new version features fresh turquoise. We'll add dark theme soon after it's official published.<br />
