How do I extract a boot image from a GSI rom without TWRP. - Treble-Enabled Device Questions and Answers

I recently bought a Chinese phone from a relatively unknown manufacturer, so I was unable to find any TWRP images that match the device, I was wondering if it was possible to extract the boot image directly from a GSI ROM. My end goal is to install Magisk so if there is a better way to go about this please let me know.

Due to my understanding, GSI have no boot.img , it uses stock boot image ( along with all other needed partitions ). So if your purpose is to root using Magisk, just find the correct boot.img of the current stock firm on your device before GSI and patch it with Magisk!

I have a Vortex V22 MTM6761 There is no stock rom. It has unofficial GSI Pixel experience plus 13.0 running on it. I too would like to root. How can I retrieve the boot.img file from the GSI rom? Or how can I pull it from the phone via terminal and fastboot? All help is greatly appreciated! Happy Saint Patricks Day!

For devices which powered by MediaTek SOC, after flash the patched boot.img, you will need to flash patched blank vbmeta.img in order to bypass AVB with follow command :
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
in which vbmeta.img is a patched blank vbmeta of your device

Thank you for the quick reply. I'm not sure I quite understand your message.
Flashing a vbmeta.img will give me a boot.img? I have a GSI PixelExperience 13.IMG file. The command fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img was flashed along with it. It was running a different rom prior to flashing the GSI PixelExp 13.IMG
All I want to do is Root the device. I've been told over and over I need the boot.img partition to modify for Root access, but I can't get unless i'm in Root or have access to the current ROM BOOT.IMG, Correct?
Why is the BOOT.IMG or Payload.BIN missing from GSI IMG ROMS? is there another way to convert or pull from a ROM like that?

Yep, I think u misunderstanding me from my very first msg. What I meant back there was : GSI ROM is what called Generic System Image. Which means, it has ONLY system.img that you will need to flash into system partition of the device. Therefore, if you need the boot image in order to patch it with Magisk or else, you will need to extract the boot.img of the CURRENT ROM which is already running on your device ( and normally, it should be stock ROM ). Cuz to be in short, GSI ROM does not have any boot.img for you to seek for, my friend!

Thank you for the message my friend. I understand that part of it. There is no stock ROM, at least I don't think there is on it. It is a a/b system but I've tried to go back to factory reset but it does not work and goes into a boot loop. So I load the GSI pixel experience rom to get it working again.
So what you are saying is, if I do not have the stock ROM, I cannot get the BOOT.IMG, Correct? So I am pretty much out of luck to get a boot.img from a GSI? Is there another generic ROM I could use that would have a boot.IMG? Ive tried a dozen ROMS and the latest pixel experience 13 unofficial rom was the only one that worked. Maybe Im trying the wrong ROM's. I do know I need A/B versions of them, I think.
If anyone else might know a way to help get me out of this situation, I would greatly appreciate. Thank you my friends!

You need to understand the basic core point is : GSI is ALWAYS system image only my friend. Boot.img can be found only on FULL ROM, not GSI. And there's always stock ROM for ANY DEVICES, what you need to do is just Google with keywords : Your-Device-Full-name Stock ROM Download. Then choose the correct one which is currently running on your device and download it. Boot.img will be right there on the zip.

Thank you! I do realize the obvious. If I was able to find it, I wouldn't be asking for help. I have rooted close to a hundred phones with stock ROM's going back over a decade.
What I'm asking is, What if the stock rom cannot be found? There is no other alternative way? I challenge finding this particular stock ROM.
Vortex V22 Model 2ADLJ-V22 MT6761V/WBB.
I have searched over and over for months on various search engines and found nothing. Maybe the ROM is uploaded somewhere in a different language other than English. I would be absolutely stunned if the stock rom was found on the internet.
Can I extract boot.img from terminal via fastboot or other linux or win program?

I have 2 models I cannot find stock ROM's for:
Vortex V22 Model 2ADLJ-V22 MT6761V/WBB - manufacture date year 2022
Moxee M2160 Model MH-T6000 2APQU-MH-T6000 Q6006_V1.0 - manufacture date year 2022
Can anyone find anything? I have scoured the web for months!
I can't believe there is nothing available for these phones.
Please let me know if you can find a stock ROM. I would love to learn where and how you found them. As I've have found nothing for months and months.
Thank you!!!

First of all many users are confusing rom with firmware, the whole rom is flashed through fastboot or EDL (although OTA updates could be flashed through recovery) while the firmware is a small set of files that can be flashed through recovery in form of zips.
What I did to boot many GSIs out there? although any of them satisfied due to many bugs comparing with the developed custom roms for Daisy.
- Go to recovery and backup just the boot partition.
- Then format data.
- Then advanced wipe; data, system and cache/ART Dalvik cache.
- Transfer GSI to your device using any convenient method (transferring file or copying to your external SDcard)
- Flash the GSI on System Image partition.
- Restore the boot partition.
- Flash only the firmware zip (version may vary) Never I needed to flash the whole rom.
- Flash DFE.
- Switch to the other slot and reboot.
- If device won´t boot it could be required to flash a proper vendor version through fastboot. Pay attention to the slot that you flashed before to target the same slot if you need to flash this partition.
With this method I could boot to OneUI, Moto, nubia, ZenUI, HydrogenOS and Xperia while I can´t on ZUIOS and didn´t try with FlymeOS

I´m back, the link is to download the whole rom.
Remember the difference between rom and firmware that I mentioned before?.
This is the link for firmwares https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/how-to/firmware-updates-daisy-t3975879
Anyway you´ll need sometimes the whole rom and sometimes it´ll be enough flashing just the firmware.

10.0.5 boot.img?

Hey all! I'm trying to root my OnePlus 7t but I'm on 10.0.5 stock and I can't find a patched boot.img, or even a stock one to patch in Magisk. I'm on the global variant. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be grand. I have already read mostly all the posts...
I have the US version which I think is also the global version. Here's my patched boot.img for 10.0.5
https://drive.google.com/file/d/12tZN5D7dmovIeqsx8sTF-B0z2gxA6LG8/view?usp=sharing

Don't ask why the file sizes are so different. It just gets smaller for some reason after patching it in magisk.
I just booted with an older one and flashed the latest magisk

I would try fastboot boot before you use fastboot flash just to make sure that the device will boot successfully with the images. You should only need to fastboot boot magisk_patched.img, then open Magisk Manager and install Magisk by choosing the direct install option in the list. You only need the steps I mentioned to have root, and if you flash it to A and B at once you can get stuck in a bootloop. I had that happen at one point from flashing both partitions, and I dont recommend trying it.

Ya, I tried every relevant boot image I could find in the forums, and the device didnt work properly with any of them. The only one that allowed the device to boot successfully caused the wifi and sounds to not work. So I downloaded the full update from OnePlus and extracted it to a folder, then used payload dumper to extract all of the individual images out of the payload.bin file from OnePlus. I copied the boot.img into the phone storage and installed Magisk Manager, then patched the stock boot.img and copied it from the phone to my pc. Then I used fastboot boot magisk_patched.img to make sure the image I made would work. I booted the device and inside Magisk Manager I chose direct install in the list of options and everything went smoothly, and I didnt need to rely on finding images online that would hopefully work.

Stuck in bootloader

Hi
i may be been messing with my phone a bit to much. The phone always boots into the bootloader.
Every time i try to normal boot, reboot or power off, the device instantly reboots into bootloader.
This happend when i tried to flash an image onto the phone. using boot_b and boot_a. it can also have been flash_a and flash_b. can't remember which one.
Does anyone on you know to fix this?

currently oneplus hasn't published any N100 stock ROM. (DE downloads)
If someone wants to root their device with magisk, they could get a boot image extracted.

Those are the 11.0.3 version, most if not all phones are on 11.0.2 which makes the boot files incompatible, you have to upgrade to 11.0.3 first, i got my phone rooted after i updated my phone to 11.0.3 and then extracted the boot and patched it with magisk.
TL;DR: This method will most likely not work on your phone unless your phone is running OxygenOS 11.0.3 which isn't pushed to phones yet.

Question Fastboot Stock Roms

Hey guys, more and more Roms are coming out for our beloved OnePlus 9 pro. I had a 6 and 7tp before and there were stock oos Roms, which you could easily flash via Fastboot and have OOS back.
It's just more convenient to simply have one file instead of flashing all images and so on
It'll be so great if any developer could try to create one, since it shouldn't be so difficult (at least that's what I guess haha)
I created one (11.2.7.7.BA), it should work, but need testers. Ofc, Use it on your own Risk, but we have MSM Tool

I owe you a beer Sconny, you brought me back from the brink! I didn't exactly use all of your files, so I'm not sure if I count as a tester, but I was able to use your fastboot commands from Flasher.bat and turn that into a shell script. I ran it not really knowing it was going to work, so I ended up not wiping beforehand but it looks like it turned out fine. Oh and I didn't use your zip, used my own and dumped the payload myself. Thanks again Sconny!

Yes but for flashing custom Roms you only need need some of the images flashed to the other slot prior to flashing the custom ROM zip. The system IMG and vendor IMG and some others are not needed. Comes in handy when moving from one custom ROM to another.

Never mind though as this was inaccurate on my part, vendor img is needed...my bad. This method just lets you flash to latest fw after you're already on a custom rom. So to say if a newer fw came out after you could update to it.
I will take a look on it when I've got more time, sorry guys. I need to test it on myself in order to provide this variant of restoring our devices, but I'm working much as hell atm and family stuff etc. Is more important. But I promise I will try to provide a fully functional package for all versions. System, ODM and Vendor is still buggy, but I have some ideas how to fix it

There should be the same bug with wiping. But I have an idea, I gonna download AA and will upload here. 1 hour needed
Uploading right now.
Here is the AA Version. Wipe Manually, i have to figure out why its not working, for me it does (Maybe cable, usb port?)
I am not a Developer, i'm just doing this for fun and testing when i have time. As always, use at your own risk.
I disabled Verity for the 3 Partitions, maybe that will help. If you guys have some Ideas, please let me know.

I'm rooted on T-Mobile stock 11.2.5.5 would I be able to flash 11.2.8.8 via fastboot? Or would I need to convert to EU first?

Just follow the tutorial in this forum

How To Guide [GUIDE] [FLASH] [GSI] Caprip [A11]

Let's start.
One caveat which I am going to mention before I start all this is:
JavaScript:
I am not responsible for your data or any damage caused by the flash.
I simply help with this contribution.
You will need a couple of files;
ADB & Fastboot and then Platform Tools.
These files are attached to this forum. The mentioned is for the computer, for the cell phone we are going to need;
vbmeta.img, product_gsi.img and the GSI.
vbmeta is extracted from stock ROM, Product will leave it attached and the GSI is your choice.
You have to install adb and fastboot in the root of the system, the steps are in the same file.
By that you have to unzip Platform Tools.
Open a terminal at the folder path.
To flash the gsi execute the following commands >>>
JavaScript:
fastboot reboot fastboot
fastboot set_active a
fastboot flash product product_gsi.img
fastboot flash system (The GSI).img
fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot --disable-verity flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot reboot
If the GSI doesn't boot just flash stock ROM and try another one.
Done! Those are the steps to flash GSI in caprip.
All this was tested on Stock ROM Android 11.
I don't know if it works on A12.
Any questions I'm on Telegram as "Samw622"
Thanks!

It is not a rom, it is a GSI, (Generic system image), it works on several devices with similar architectures and slots.
And yes... I already tried FluidOS, OctaviOS, ArrowOS and LineageOS. Right now I'm on ArrowOS, I notice it more fluid than Pixel Exp OS. It overheats less when playing a video game.
The same files are always used, the only thing that changes is the GSI.
Thank you very much for your comment.

No friend, it is not necessary, the requirements are: Extract vbmeta.img from your Stock ROM, (From your channel), download the attached files, a compatible gsi and obviously, have the bootloader unlocked.

Ok so i've got 2 questions:
1. does this method wipe the internal storage/data and is it really required? (i'm new to treble devices with a/b partitions and i don't want to lose my data)
2. how did you find other roms/gsis for this device?

1st, If my friend flashing a Custom GSI/ROM Type: GSI completely erases the storage, and STRICTLY does not skip any command, the terminal may suffer a Hard Brick or a Full Brick.
2nd, You can try to search Github or XDA, Custom GSIs dedicated to A/B and arm64 partitions. Do not try to flash a GSI of Android 11 or lower, the terminal will not boot. I say this from experience.

Yes, I am using ArrowOS, it works excellent.
Take the link, it's the same process.
ArrowOS: https://sourceforge.net/projects/gsi-projects/files/v400.h/ArrowOS-12/
If you manage to flash the GSI, could you send a screenshot or a recording?, thanks
