how to increase lifespan of worn out battery? - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Ok guys,
SOT was just around 5h 30 min so I suppose battery is pretty badly worn out.
Probably the phone has been used around 1.5 y and I see date of manfufacture 09/2019.
So I switched to dark mode, enabled power saving, disabled all gestures, switched to fullHD+ res and for sake of battery I'm nor charging with super fast option.
I think I won't even charge at max capacity because accubattery tells me the wear out has smallest value when I charge it at 85 %,so I suppose I will charge it to 85 %.
I will discharge battery at 15 %,never less.
I'm charging with airplane mode ON,because I'm not busy person to need phone while charging.
I can also charge the battery when the phone is OFF and I suppose that is good for battery too.
So dear friends what else I can disable in Android 11 and try to increase it's lifespan?
These are all things which came to my mind from experience.
Phoneinfo is reporting under USAGE HISTORY when I tap on it few times health of only 41 %,but don't think it's accurate.
With other software DevCheck and AccuBattery can't get battery wear level, discharge cycles info.
Now I charged it for first time after buying phone to 80 % (suggested by Accubattery) and this is what I got, dunno if it's accurate or not,but I don't believe that health is 96 %,I wish it is.

Don't discharge past 20% but 30 or 40% is a better cutoff. Charging to 70 or 80% max most times will also help. Li's prefer frequent midrange charging.
These batteries aren't that hard to change out. Just had one fail in my Note 10+. As they age that becomes more likely to happen.
Keep an eye open for rear cover bulging, replace the battery asap if this happens.
The battery sits directly on top of the display and can damage it if it swells.
Erratic fast charging and diminished capacity are also signs of a Li battery failure and with the hump there's no doubt.

oh okay,thank you.
Look at the accubattery readings, doesn't look that bad, huh?
How and when will I know that battery is for replacement?
I still can't find software which would report me wear cycles.

Accubattery... this is it's least useful feature.
Compare your SOT now to when it was new.
It's way more than a 4% drop in capacity.
In reality it's more like 60% or so! It depends of course on how much it's current draw is now and if it's about what it's usage was when new*.
It may also be the phone as it maybe incapable of actual ma measurement and only estimates it bases on battery voltage drop.
*my 10+ is getting around 10 hours SOT but with some battery hogs it could easily fall to 6 hrs SOT with a new battery.

Great deal. You did good, the 10+ is a great phone
It still running on Pie?
The SOT runtime is very subjective depending how well optimized it is. If it's running warm* while surfing the web with screen brightness at 40%, it's not optimized and probably using more battery than it has too.
*ambient temp around 72°F but the phone is noticeably warm.

Great app for getting most of of your battery with some great performance tweaks as well. Difference is very noticeable on my device and premium is very reasonable.
Also recommend tasker. I have it set so my NFC and mobile data are automatically of when at home and automatically turned on (with WiFi off) when WiFi disconnects. Also GPS off at all times unless Google maps is open. These made all made a huge difference for me. Reckon combined they at least doubled my battery life per charge.

Battery Automatically Recharges without Plug in

Has anyone experienced this. I used my phone heavily for about 1.5 hours at which point it said that I had about 50% battery left. i then left it untouched and unplugged for about 8 hours overnight and when i picked it up int he morning it was at around 50% still and the battery details showed this. seems like after i stopped using it, the battery started charging rather than discharging until I picked it up again.
I'm on stock with an extended battery.
I'm not complaining, just trying to see whats going on.
I've seen this happen as well when going from heavy use to no use over night or when put in airplane mode.
should ask in the Q and A forum....not development....
not only is it the wrong forum...but you will get more answer
The reason for this is due to how the phone displays battery usage statistics. You phone will periodically check the phone usage and determine battery life based on your current usage amount. So if you talk on your phone for an hour straight, during the time your phone will figure how much battery you have left based on that usage. If you then don't use it for 8 hours, your battery level indicated by the phone can actually go up, or stay the same for a very long period of time. Thats why your battery will drop very fast when you start to use it when it has not been used for a while.
It looks like the SOC (state of charge) algorithm is using the derivative of current (consumption over time) in conjunction with the open circuit voltage, yet taking little regard to cell temperature.
As current consumption is decreased, the cell temperature will eventually decrease and the open circuit voltage will slightly increase. This is where the SOC difference comes from.
This is a common problem with any SOC algorithm that doesn't precisely factor in the cell temperature. With these lithium cells being as small as they are (compared to what's used in Automotive applications) trying to characterize the cell temperature characteristics would be like nailing jello to the wall.

My thoughts are right along these lines. The phone is projecting your remaining battery life based on previous usage. It is forcasting what your usage will be and with no usage over a certain time period it is reporting negative numbers which send your patterns in a different direction.
Definitely feels temp related. I used mine heavily in a real bad signal area (Restaurant with a tin ceiling...) and it got really hot. I noticed battery life down to 48%. Put it near a fan to cool off and 5 minutes later it was at 65%.
Not positive on specifics, but it has to do with voltage fluctuating.

battery observations w/ questions

So I've been running some random tests with my battery and usage to try and figure out how this thing maintains charge and such. I'm running rooted stock TW 4.1.1 with Juice Defender.
1. Usually, I charge the phone overnight while I sleep, then when I unplug it, it drops down to 99% immediately. Lately, it's been dropping down to around 96% in 45 minutes of no use then leveling off. This is with a new battery that replaced another one right after the Jellybean upgrade as I thought my battery was busted.
2. I usually get about 12-14 hours with 2.5-3hrs of screen time (I get crappy service where I work and the phone is in airplane mode when not in use, and when in use, it has bad service).
3. This weekend, I didn't charge it over Friday night and let it die Saturday morning. Then I charged it for about 3 hours or so and ended up getting about 34ish hours with 3.5 hours of screen time out of it (using wifi and better network since I'm at home).
4. I charged it overnight last night (about 9 hours) and when I unplugged it, it dropped to 98 immediately, then 30 minutes later it was down to 96 again.
With all that said, I'm thinking that I probably should not be charging my phone overnight at all anymore. The only problem with that is that I don't have enough time in the morning to charge it before work and I can't charge it while at work as I move around all day.
Will I wear my battery down more by not fully charging it and using it throughout the day and only charging it when I can? I've read that battery website that people post constantly where they talk about how the new batteries stop charging after a certain period of time, but if that were the case, why would I get better battery service from only charging for 3 hours then leaving it overnight?
I know there are a million battery threads on here and we probably didn't need another one, but i thought I'd try to create one with a bit more substance than "oh i get 6 hours with 5 hours screen time on such and such a ROM". I'm more interested in the physical methods than the software methods for getting the best out of the battery.
The quick drop off in battery charge is probably partly due to some hysteresis that has already built up. There is a lag time between the voltage demand on the battery and the battery's ability to deliver the required current. Energy is lost during this lag time.
I posted this another forum so I am recycling but it is relevant.
Some general guidelines when charging Li-ion batteries:
A slow charge is preferable because it reduces heat and hysteresis. Heat of any sort decreases the overall life of the battery. Hysteresis reduces the performance of the battery in the discharge state causing a quicker plummet in battery charge from 100%. (NiMH batteries are worse with hysteresis, but Li-ion cells suffer from hysteresis also).
Unplug the charger as soon as possible when the battery is fully charged.
Lithium ion cells however can not tolerate overcharging or overvoltage and the charge should be terminated immediately when the upper voltage limit is reached.

Do not use charging pads or mats as they introduce more heat.
Pulse chargers do the best job because they give the battery brief rest periods to allow the chemicals to settle and accept the charge with reduced hysteresis and heat.
A memorable though not quite equivalent phenomenon is the pouring of beer into a glass. Pouring very quickly results in a lot of froth and a small amount of beer at the bottom of the glass. Pouring slowly down the side of the glass or alternatively letting the beer settle till the froth disperses and then topping up allows the glass to be filled completely.

Depth of discharge. Consistently letting the battery run down to very low reduces the overall lifetime. It is better to minimize the depth of discharge by topping off when convenient than running it down completely.
Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life, other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery once in a while.

Bought new Z play/kind of disappointed with the battery life

Hello all,
I bought a new Z play to replace my ageing phone, and I have mixed feelings about the battery life. The phone has received universal praise for its battery life, and while some of it is true in my case, I can't seem to get those high SoT numbers that everyone brags about.
It's very difficult for me to break the 6h SoT barrier, and I consider myself a light user: whatsapp, browsing, some reddit, and the occasional music (through headphones). I don't play any games, or perform heavy tasks. Also the phone is connected to WiFi 85% of the time, get decent signal, and the screen is set on auto-brightness.
Running latest version of the stock rom, and I performed factory reset + wiped cache + reset network settings countless times as per suggestions.
Attached some stats for 50% that I just took.
Is there something I'm missing?
Take it with a grain of salt, just because people brag about numbers does not mean they are real or obtainable by everyone. Battery life will vary for every user and phone. The time you have is in the acceptable range and I would not worry.
Yes, even I have never achieved the 8-9+ hrs of SOT that's I've seen in some threads. Based on my usage I get a minimum of 6.5hr SOT with the phone lasting a good 25-27 hours before I have to plug it back in.
Since the phone is new it might take a few cycles for the battery to truly show its stamina.
Those answer are definitely right. It all varies on the users. . Also please makes sure you have bluetooth and wifi scanning off. (Location> Scanning > Bluetooth & Wifi Scanning) Another factor is apps. Get rid of facebook and facebook messenger. Apps that use GCM eat battery like a range rover eats gas. I've hit 8--10 hr of SOT before. Let your phone get use to your daily activities. I believe it'll optimize itself over time.
It's normal.
I was also getting earlier 5-6 hrs SOT(When the device was new) but not I'm getting 8-9 hrs SOT.
So as your phone is new it might take few cycles for the battery to show its full stamina!
Cheers!!
Thanks for the replies and for putting my mind at ease.
Bluetooth and wifi scanning are off (forgot to mention that).
Anyway, I understand. Those insane SoT of 10+ are best case scenarios with careful use of the device. Still happy with my current capacity (anything which lasts until the next morning is great).
And yep, the phone manual (who reads those anymore), did mention the battery taking a few cycles before reaching its capacity.
Now, for a different issue. If I'd like to disable turbocharging/quickcharging my phone, would a USB C to A cable coupled with any charger (including the quickcharging ones) do the trick? Based on my understanding, the cable limits the chargining power, so any regular (quality) C to A cable should restore normal charging speeds even when using a fast charging charger. In case you're wondering why I'd like to do that, it's because the phone gets way too hot for my liking when using the Moto turbocharger and I'd like to reserve that for when necessary.
Well, guyz do have a point.
The screenshots are showing you have almost 3hrs SoT after day and a half. This is normal.
Those >10 hrs of SoT aren't achieved with careful usage. Coming from my experience, I got 10.5 hrs SoT with 10% battery left, BUT, in one day. My Moto can last up to 3 day with one charge, but in those 3 days I'll have maybe 4hrs SoT. So, in average, my Moto lasts up to 2 days with 6/7hrs SoT (I mostly use FB, Messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, YT, Instagram, stock 6.0.1). It simply depends how you use it. That big, almost 11hrs SoT, I could only achieve on weekends, coz otherwise I don't have the time to stare in my phone so much.
On that other thing, Moto does get pretty hot while charging. And you're right, the cable does limit the charging power so it will probably work.
I was one of those users getting 10h SoT early on. But I was doing that inside a 24h usage window. Your 50% stats have you stretched out to like almost 3 days off charger. Idle time vs. screen on time is ALWAYS a trade-off.
I look at battery drain in terms of drain rate at idle, and drain rate with screen on. Early on I was seeing 6% drain per hour of screen on, and 1-1.5% per hour screen off. So basically 5 hours of idle time costs you 1 hour screen on. Those were my numbers on the original MM build. My battery life has gotten worse with every software update. I have NOT done a factory reset, mostly because I don't want the hassle and I still get a day off normal use with plenty of battery to spare. But I usually see 18h off charger and 3-4h SoT in a normal day, and that leaves me at 40-50% when I plug in.
Looking at your stats, if screen on costs you 6% per hour, you have 17% worth of screen on drain. That leaves 33% idle drain over 38 hours, or sightly less than 1% per hour idle. Seems pretty darn good to me.
Your cell signal is definitely not helping your battery life. Switch to 2g when on wifi, your signal bar should be full and it'll probably help your battery life.
Enjoy the fact that this phone lets you keep BT/WiFi scanning/Facebook/etc. on without having to worry whether or not you're going to make it a full day. I use all that stuff, have multiple live widgets updating, brightness at least half way, T-Mobile Digits running, and still make it a full day. Additionally, it's great to know that if you do have to make it 2-3 days with minimal usage because you don't have a charger handy, you can. However, I'm willing to bet that 99% of users are able to charge their phone daily. To those users, I say enjoy all the features and don't worry about it.
Really depends on the screen brightness...I can hit those number with my screen brightness turned down a good bit...probably around 30 percent and auto sync off...if i have brightness anywhere above 60 percent then battery life drops a good amount...still well enough to get me through a 12 hour work day but there is a difference

Charging Cycle?

Hey its been a few days since ive received my one plus 5t. Wanted to know what are the typical charging cycles you guys use. Do you guys charge when battery is below 5 and stop at 100? or something different.
i am aiming to use this phone for about 3+ years so would be great to know how can i maximize my usage in this duration.

you can charge your device pretty much at any time just don't let it drain to 0% (shut off condition) as that'll theoretically deteriorate the battery in the long run. I had a wrong perception that charging the phone from 0-100 and discharging back to 100-0 will make the battery last a little longer ( tried it with my moto e and moto g which eventually started giving me random shutdowns at 20-25% juice left) which is totally opposite of what you should do. With the 5t I usually put it on charge around 15 and then straight to 100 or around 70 when I'm in a rush.
I typically charge when the battery is around 20 - 30% and I have an app to stop charging when 60% is reached. According to Battery University it's best to keep between 30% to 60% but of course practicality has to come first. 60% upper limit has worked pretty well for me as I can usually charge my phone when needed.

There are two factors killing a battery: heat and voltage. A lot of heat (over 30°C) will degrade the lifespan of your battery.
High and low voltage can degrade it too. The optimal voltage would be around 4.05 V. Anything higher degrades it and anything far too low (under 3.5 V or so) can even make it non operational without a high current "boost" to make it usable again. However, lithium batteries tend to charge to 4.4 V which is good for battery life but bad for the lifespan.
In short you should not keep your phone at 100 % over a long period of time and never discharge it completely. Heat and voltage induced by fast charging is also bad (faster charging means higher voltages of a few 100 mV).
I'm using Magisk and the Magic Charging Switch module to charge it to 90 % and only charge it at 80 % again. At night I lover it to 80 % and 70 % and 45 minutes before I wake up it is charged to 100 % making the battery only use the max voltage for 1 to 2 hours instead of the whole night.
Leaving the phone plugged in wouldn't hurt it im terms of cycles etc. but the constant high voltage does hurt. More information can be found here. Really worth a read: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

Battery life drained extremely fast under 20%

Hi all
I noticed that the battery of my nate 20x 5g drains extremely fast under 20 % it went directly from 20 to 16 then to 8 then to 3 percent
Also the battery life 100 percent at 1pm drains to 30 percent at 6pm using only whatsapp and some calls it isn't as good as my p30 pro (1.5day normal usage)
I need your help cause if it's the same on all mate 20 x I'll be obliged to change the phone even I love everything on it except the battery life

hm thats weird. check ur screen brightness, thats the no. 1 battery life sucker. also, switch off all unneeded sensors when not in use (wifi, mobile data, BT, NFC, GPS, etc).
aside from that, have a look at your performance profile (performance, balanced, battery saver) and also check and see how many apps are non battery optimized in settings, as well as how many apps are allowed to run in background and be launched automatically.
Thanx so much for your quick reply
I'll check this out and I'll give you a feed back

wipe the phone don't install your sht wipe other crap apps and test the battery ... if still bad , need replacing...
Below 20% battery usage increases rapidly, this is normal.
The phone's wattage usage is constant as is its V+ power rail voltage. Volts X Amps=watts therefore as battery voltage falls the phone's voltage converter draws more amps to make up for the difference in falling voltage.
The phone's actual wattage consumption remains almost the same except for power lost in the voltage conversion.
Best to NOT use after 20-30% as it stresses the battery unnecessary.

Hey man,
Unfortunately its normal for that phenomenon to occur not only on the mate 20x but on other phones as batteries age losing their lasting strength. My sammy a70 also acts this way at the 20% point where battery scales down rapidly as you've described.
This is due to a few factors like one or more cells inside degrading over time as estimates to the battery gauge will be missing by the percentage of juice represented by the missing/damaged cell. There are other factors that come into play but this is by far the most frequently occurring event.
You can try replacing the battery which entails thermally heating the back cover to open the phone or buying a battery case like the one I linked below which I bought a few months ago. It has helped me extend my 20x's battery to 6 - 9 days under medium to heavy use without a recharge while killing bt, gps, data, etc. Under light use I was able to pull off 12 days without recharging.
