General Moto G40 Factory Rom Hi-Res output issues. - Moto G40 / G60

It seems like not much effort has been put into the default ROM of Moto g40. I've tested the Hi-Res output support using the various apps that supports it but non of the apps supported Hi-Res output from Moto G40. Our device has Native DSD support, PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit, but Motorola didn't provide the support for the same. Here is the audio output detection log by poweramp:

Here if you can see that poweramp is detecting our device's chip as 'sm6150' which is a code name of Snapdragon 675 instead of SM7150 which is the codename of Snapdragon 732G. This is just stupid, seems like ROM developers took some Snapdragon 675 based ROM changed few configurations based on Snapdragon 732G, and when they find every basic feature is working, they made it stable.

Truth be told Mi developers provide much better support for their devices. Stock Android experience means nothing if Motorola can't provide support of all the features that their device supports. If you are reading this and you want great developer/hardware support for your device then buy Redmi note 10 pro instead. The only reason I purchased this device is that it provides support for more 4G/LTE network bands than Redmi note 10 pro as I'm moving abroad, G40 will have better connectivity than note 10 pro.

Also, please if you notice other issues with the factory ROM then highlight that here so that Motorola developers can fix those issues with the next update. For this issue in particular I've created a topic here please provide your inputs as well so that this topic gets more attention.

Yes I tried playing a hi-res FLAC file, but unfortunately, power amp couldn't play it in my G40
but my cousin"s MI 10T played it

First of all, from where are you getting your flacs!? Probably someone re-encoded them from a lossy format which renders those flacs useless and just wastage of storage. It's not true lossless unless you're getting it straight from the producer's DAW. And most of the songs these days are encoded for music streaming sites .
So all the Flacs you're getting are ripped from there and re-encoded.
Secondly streaming services use Acc so it's won't matter either.
Yes other brands do support it ,and yes it does offer some differences to trained ears . But it is not a huge difference like playing a 720p video on a 4k screen .

This topic is about a feature not being implemented properly and not about you educating people on how to listen to their music. BTW do you really think I maintained my music collection blindly?

Yes, it doesn't make a huge difference to the untrained ears and without proper gear but there are still people who would like to have the option to play high res audio. Whether the functionality is being locked intentionally or not, there is no harm in bringing up the issue to light. Besides, all the streaming platforms are now coming up with lossless playback option so if we're paying for it, why not make use of it? Whether the change in quality makes a difference is secondary and it does not help this discussion in any way.

Dashcam -- Joying Intel

Ok, so people have found that standard USB cameras don't work on these units. The only known working camera is actually a fully self-contained recording device, that really only uses the USB wire for power and a few pointless controls.

Really, if you're going to make the camera self contained, then what the heck is the point of bothering with the hookup with the head unit to begin with? Makes no sense.
Now the reason they did this is quite obvious... in their OLDER head units, they used the complete piece of trash ROCKCHIP 3188 SoC. I'm referring, of course, to MTC units. Those units would be *completely crippled* if you tried to record video on them, since they had neither video encoder nor even video decoder hardware blocks, which means that the video processing would be done entirely on the CPU! So they sold a camera that would mask this problem by recording the video itself!
The Intel SoC's have a video CODEC, so obviously the right way to do this now is to actually record the video on the head unit, using standard file formats.
I initially theorized that they had crippled either the kernel or the camera HAL.
So last night I watched the kernel log while plugging a PROPER USB camera in, and found something very interesting;
1) The kernel detected the camera, and properly associated it with the UVC video driver!
2) It was assigned a devfs entry of /dev/video5 --- 5? FIVE?
That's interesting. Why 5? Because there are already entries of /dev/video0 through /dev/video4.
Wonder what those extra inputs correspond to? Typically, when you plug in a device like a camera, the devfs entry is created dynamically. Yes, in this case, it was! But it was created at 5 (the 6th video device). Very likely, the HAL is hardcoded to use specific inputs from 0-4. I'm not aware of any Android mechanism for manually selecting the device. So blank screen on "DVR"? Because its trying to pull video from a video device that has no video INPUT.
It is certainly worth some investigation. I wonder what those inputs correspond to. Don't suppose that they could actually have video feeds from things like BACKUP camera and VIDEO IN, that feed Android, could they? Note that some video devices can create multiple devfs entries that correspond to different modes of operation, which could explain why there are so many.
It is also possible that the FYT5009 SoM has video input option that may not even be hooked up. Depends on how the MCU board is wired up.
I also note that in the configuration options for backup camera, there is an option for it to use a USB camera.
EDIT:
Checked into the camera HAL, it has hardcoded values for /dev/video0 through /dev/video3. What this means, is that there is currently no way in hell that Android can access /dev/video5, which is where an external USB camera is attached.

What it is, is a butchered build of ffmpeg
Which, of course, is licensed as GPL/LGPL.
So... intentionally and knowingly violating GPL, else why would they be hiding the identity of the program!

I have successfully captured a video from a generic uvcvideo USB camera! And even better, over a test with a duration of about 2 minutes of HD MJPEG at whatever maximum frame rate it was able to deliver, the CPU utilization never exceeded 2% of *one* core.
Now truth is that I completely bypassed Android for this test, and ran ffmpeg directly with /dev/video5. Now this actually is a great option for running dashcam, since it is low overhead, greater running stability (no worry about Android coming around and killing the process!), and very effective.
I will begin working on a utility for managing it.
I would like to be able to capture the camera's audio stream as well, mux multiple cameras into a single video file, time based auto splitting, and a subtitle track containing a coordinate / speed readout from GPS. Ffmpeg should be able to handle all of it, except interfacing with the GPS, I will need something else to come up with the data stream for that.

One of the great strengths of Android is that you don't need to mess around with the "manufacturer's only authorized software source" -- as in apple. Reality is that play store is only there for people who don't have the faintest idea about how powerful their devices actually are. Apple's store is there to restrict their users' freedom.
So I've been playing with ffmpeg, and have figured out how to use it to capture any number of v4l2 video streams into a single mkv file, with unequal video configurations, and automatic time-based file splitting.
Its pretty cool what you can do.
For instance, BETTER camera does mjpeg at high resolution (say 800x600, or even higher), 30 fps. Crappy camera only does raw 320x240 at 5 fps. I can simultaneously shove BOTH of their streams into a single mkv file **WITHOUT TRANSCODING THE STREAMS***.
This makes sense because (1) you might have a bunch of leftover cameras that you want to use, (2) you probably want to go with a higher quality on the front than the back -- backwards cameras are a lot less interesting (though still useful enough to make sense to record).
In any case, this is going to be pretty nice.
I wonder if our head units have one USB port with a hub chip? Or if they have two genuine USB ports? Easy enough to find out, I just haven't bothered to look yet.
One "issue" I'm having with the CHEAP USB cameras I'm playing around with, is that I can't select framerate or quality. It would be nice to be able to tell the camera to increase the compression ratio and drop the framerate down to, say 5 fps.... since it would make the storage requirements significantly lower. Of course, I could turn on transcoding, but couldn't use the hardware codec with ffmpeg, which means it would be on the CPU. I wonder if the cameras support it? Or if its a limitation of uvcvideo (the driver)?

Claims resolution to be 728 * 582 , not sure if it's true. It would be great if I could use it for basic DVR functionality on the Intel 2GB units.

Is there a way to use the high quality DAC for the speaker by default?

There was a post where someone suggested using the AIMP player, I haven't been able to find it again (to give the proper credit), but it started because someone noticed how sound played different depending on what app played the sound or music.
It seems AIMP uses the Snapdragon 24-bit DSP (or DAC?) , which delivers a high quality output, I was actually surprised when I heard the difference.
My question is where or what could be changed so the default audio output uses the high quality DSP? So videos games and even ringtones and notifications (seriously it sounds much better) use it as well.
There is a great mod that activates the headspeaker when playing media, and even allows using both speakers with a stereo configuration, so perhaps using the DSP by default is also doable.
it was me who suggested the AIMP player in a previous post. i would however like to inform you that audio output using the OpenSL ES API instead of the default AudioTrack output will give you the raw audio of the DAC. Media Players which have this option will definitely sound much better. To my knowledge i have seen only VLC media player to support this feature (you have to change the output in setting unlike in AIMP). Custom sound mods are software level implementations which will just give you an amplified sound irrespective of quality. PowerAMP and MX has this option too but doesnt seem to work.

Oh it was you, awesome recommendation indeed! Now normal audio output sounds muffled to me, the DAC audio quality is certainly much better.

Sure man, ZUK has done something which modifies the audio quality before getting into our ears. I am sure its the audio driver. If someone can change that we should get a better audio quality.
Ummm I'm so unlucky, I've my JACK bricked :silly:. And I'm finding some way to route audio through USB using "USB-C to 3.5mm converter", same as Le2. I could not find a decent type-C headphone. I use Bluetooth reciever, and it's not even close to 3.5 mm jack. Any clue ? I'VE bought Poweramp, and it's useless now.
For those who use PowerAmp, update to latest build, i.e. 704 from official forum. Zuk Z2 does support HiRes Audio Output. Latest Play Store beta channel only have 703 build, which doesn't support HiRes Audio output in N.

When I enable hi-res output, it fails. I don't think it is working.

Latest version of MX Player (1.9.5 & 1.9.7) support change of audio output method. Although no big difference with movie files, maybe difference can be felt when listening to flac audio.

Maybe true, coz I found no difference even in movies with uncompressed 6 channel & 5.1 audio. But option exists, so we have hope for it to be working in future releases.
Update for Poweramp 704_universal - Doesn't work properly yet. No observable difference in quality even with flac. I've been using the 704 version for quite a while now, also on 3 different phones. None of the three have supported high res properly. On my OPX it usually caused the app to crash. Maybe with the long awaited update to v3 might make it work properly.

yeah...those options make no difference ...only AIMP works for now...in the beta release of AIMP there is an option to change audio output too

If, like me, your preferred player is Poweramp, you can make it sound like AIMP's OpenSL output. besides enabling OpenSL as output method, open this file /data/data/com.maxmpz.audioplayer/shared_prefs/com.maxmpz.audioplayer_preferences.xml, find the string osl_headset_float and set its value to true and save it.Then force close PowerAMP and open again, the audio quality will match that of AIMP. But anyways, if you are really a audiophile, using VLC (opensl output ofc) gives the best possible quality, just saying

I have the converter as well as ZUK Z2 (with my wife), I'll check if audio through USB-C works and if the hardware output works or not (provided my wife doesn't get cranky over my testing )

Is X265 10bit 1080p mkv supported?

Is honor 8 pro capable of playing X265 10bit 1080p hevc video?
I've tried samples from jelly fish with stock player, mx player n vlc. None works. Tested the same on friend's op3t phone n it played smoothly with stock player. Even X265 10bit 120mbps 4k video was played without lag on op3t. But this honor 8 pro cant even play 5mbps X265 10bit video?
So is this hardware issue on honor 8 pro?
Any suggestions??

Yes. It's absolutely capable. I just tried. Make sure you're using the latest vlc 3.0.0

I too had this problem on EMUI 5.1
Wait for the update. It may solve the problem because I didn't encounter this problem on EMUI 8.

So my phone has been updated to emui 8.0 and phone has been factory reset post update but this issue of non playing X265 10bit videos is still there.
Any advise?
1080p hevc mkv videos cannot be played with inbuilt player (due to colour distortion, though videos are played). With MX player, HW decoder is not supported; video automatically starts playing with SW decoder. With VLC full Hardware decoding is supported without color distortion (but still playback is not that smooth, sometimes even videos got stuck).
Overall video playback on honor 8 pro is poor. So don't expect much.

The chipset is surely capable but I don't know why this happens.
Vlc does play the video but if the video is skipped, it gets stuck on that frame.
Maybe because the kirin chipset isn't widely used and thus, there are optimisation issues with many apps. I get dropped frame rates almost in all games and this baffles me because the chipset is fairly powerful.
I am not buying device with kirin chipset again. Lots of optimization issues with 3rd party apps.

it would be really sad. u've contributed a lot to this community. to say this means we won't see you in the honor/ huawei section that often since they usually stick to their own processor.
but yes, it does seem sad that there's really not much optimisation... though for the GPU, it is still MALI, which is also on Exynos.
i can only hope things will be better and Huawei/ honor can really work with more developers.

I can't really say if that first line was sarcasm or not.
This device can't play any game without skipping frame rates. It lags pathetically on playing temple run 2.
There are clearly optimisation issues for 3rd party apps because they have optimised it exceptionally well for their own apps and the whole software. This ruins the overall experience because as the OP stated that a device with SD821 plays 1080p 10 bit x265 videos smoothly while this doesn't.
Exynos devices may not be relying from this same problem because Samsung sells those devices in a lot more number than Kirin devices.

as for Exynos devices... they also use MALI GPU, though it's a diff variant of the chip. still, if they can get it optimised... i guess we can hope it's the same for Huawei/ honor. after all, Huawei/ honor is also one of the top manufacturers in the world right now.

I felt it was sarcasm because I don't think I have done anything major for the community here. I am not a dev [emoji12]
I haven't used an Exynos device. So, I am just guessing. Yup, I know they both use the same GPU but with lesser number of cores though. Maybe that's the root cause of this or it's just pure optimisation problems, don't know because reviews didn't show any such issues with this device. I am really confused.

Yes even i am also confused as reviews shows no such issues but it can be possible that not many ppl really tested these specific vidoes on this device. Hence I posted screen recordings of my phone. Need some more testers to see if I m the unlucky one.
Stock player plays video smoothly but with lot of color distortion. VLC just hangs after 1sec and MX player plays through SW decoder with lot of stuttering. XPlayer from Google play plays video much better but still stutter a lot. Overall you can't play x265 10bit HEVC videos with higher bitrate n framerate and of higher file size on our H8Pro. What a disappointment. I tested the Jellyfish sample video which was around ~33mb and main10
Not only in hevc, x264 video playback also have a bug. The 'blacks' are not shown properly in HW decoding of MX player or inbuilt player or VLCs full Hardware decoding or any app using internal codecs including video playback in YouTube app. There is a permanent 'tint' over video (only video screen) when played in these ways. The tint is absent in SW decoding mode of MX player which means the fault is in internal decoding.
To check this pause a black scene of widescreen video (so that there are top and bottom black bars). The black bars are distinctly visible in inbuilt player (and other playbacks that use internal decoding); But screen is full black (black of screen becomes same as that of bars and so can not be distinguished) when SW decoding of MX player or VLC (No harware acceleration) is used.
Not only blacks become greenish black but all colors become slightly dull compared to actual.
This most probably wasn't before oreo update.
Also there is one more magic to it. I tried to attach screenshot, but the screenshots are clear (tint is absent), even when screen recording is on tint dissapears and reappears as soon as screen recording is turned off.
I had to take shot from another phones camera. Pics in attachment is of same black scene (video paused). Screenshot is completely black while photograph shows how it actually appears (distinct top and bottom stripes).
Eye comfort or display color settings has nothing to do with it.
I already reported this issue to honor customer care but I don't think it would do anything.
Anyways, there is NO way to fully enjoy videos in our honor 8 pro. We have to just accept this. To avoid frustrations: stop downloading x265 video, stop comparing with other phones and simply accept what we have.

[Discussion/DEV/ROM|Kernel] quad dac/es9218p on non-stock ROMs (lineageOS,etc.)

I've researched on the web for quite some time on this topic but didn't find anything definitive yet (a clear answer if it works - how to set up, etc.):
some are mentioning that only the right app would be needed to be used (well, no)
a few are mentioning that there is supposed to be an app that toggles between default dac (wcd934x) and quad dac (es9218p)
others are referring to a setting in build.prop (nope, the ROM doesn't have the mechanisms to react to that - and neither do the drivers most likely - or at least we need to make sure that this stuff is included for us)
then there are a few mentioned cases that there's support on lineageOS on board to utilize the es9218*
there's also occurences where it's mentioned that the sound stops working entirely when switching tracks (?!) - so it's still WIP
so at least the kernel needs to be set up that way - but there's probably more to it

For those who only use the quad dac for local playback (music stored on their device; NO Youtube, Streaming, etc. with Quad DAC on LineageOS/AEX/RR for now) - there is an app (for purchase) that activates & uses the quad dac (es9218p)
I've tested it and got the same specific quirk / behavior I got on LG Stock ROM with activated quad dac option.
The app is not cheap (6.99 EUR, >8 USD) - but it's totally worth it, the UI is great, the sound output is awesome (finally quad dac on non-stock !) and it uses a "custom developed USB audio driver"

First I thought that the more punchy sound output could be placebo/imagination (with Xiaomi Piston V2 & the B & O Play Headphones),
but then I plugged in the Xiami Hybrid Pro (these are the only headphones that don't work with the quad dac for me - since they cause a extreme loud hissing/static on the left channel),
and after a few seconds I got the characteristic hissing on the left channel - that means that the es9218p DAC/sound card/AMP is definitely being used
That's the same behavior I got on LG Stock ROM after enabling the quad dac

In theory we would just need to write a HAL or something like that, which interacts with the kernel driver, its already there, just something needs to talk to it.
And some Overlay in the Settings to enable/disable the HAL.
The HAL would be C/++ while the Settings overlay would then be Java .... I could do the later.

Vibration motor issues may be solved. Dev is currently trying user @Krakophyst suggestion to replace vibration motor files with those from V35. Now why that would work better than actual V30 files, don't know. But it worked for the user.

It works, because the V35 files have to work on AOSP (because of treble implementation on the V35), while ours depend heavily on the LG framework (which probably does its own stuff to the vibration services), and arent supposed to ever run on AOSP.

Aha. Then score one for Treble on an LG phone that has some similar features to ours. V35 may never get bootloader unlock and root, but we can cannibalize it for the V30.

IF (a big if) volte works on GSIs (which nobody tried so far from what i know, i only know 1 person with a G7, and he cant use VoLTE, thanks to the carrier), those files are highly device specific (or atleast SoC specific), its very unlikely that those would work for us.
I could try, but dont get your hopes up on that.

I grabbed the app, it had some Network options (notably for Tidal and Google Play Music) I would assume using those options from within the app would use the DAC? Can't test personally as I'm currently using Spotify but would happily switch if I could use the DAC on a streaming service, assuming at least ~80% songs I have on Spotify are available there.

Could very well be that it provides or uses hooks to interact with those and I guess it should work (if it works, if it doesn't you can nag the devs to fix it - it's a somewhat "premium" priced app after all, and support is to be expected )
I'm not using any streaming services, sorry - so can't test.

Anyways I started a Tidal subscription (hifi student plan). From listening to a couple songs things definitely seem clearer but can't say for sure if it's using the DAC or placebo/better quality audio is the cause.

I probably will be switching off Spotify in favor of this; only because the student plan for it exists and I do hear an audible difference with their hifi settings ($19.99/month for hifi plan without a student discount yeeesh).

just tried it with the Xiaomi Pro HD Hybrid and I get the characteristic strong hissing noise in one of the channels (left channel) - that's the only headphones I get that weird thing with when the quad dac is activated (on stock ROM).
This confirms that the es9218p ("quad dac") also works with Onkyo HF Player on non-Stock :good:

Would you still need to use higher ohm headphones to enable the quad DAC , or will this (USB Player Pro) allow any headphones to work with it?
I've got 4 sets of IEMs that I love, and would hate to have to start all over again buying new ones.

Nope, I'm using the quad/dedicated DAC with "normal", low ohm/impedance headphones myself,
the only "difference" is that there isn't much noticeable difference compared to the default (qualcomm) audio DAC
So you'll be fine,
you can choose to get yourself higher ohm headphones in the future (after careful evaluation, of course) take your time to choose the ones that best fit your hearing preferences (sound response, etc.)

Tested on the lousy zenfone 3 zoom (stock 3.5mm audio sucks inspite of DAC chip because of the poor engine optimization) and it worked like a champ but i believe other devices with SN 625 may benefit from it and they are A LOT, (use 709 build ONLY) other builds won't work as good, i tested them all.
Please do make a feedback on which other device this worked.

Did you toggle the 'Wired headset/AUX" ? and was your test with headphones or via the loud speaker? and what your headphones are?
This release 709 worked for me gloriously! the only problem that it's not free and needs some work that you can find on youtube or i would post a fellow up about the odds of activating it but i just needed a conformation that it at least made a difference by utilizing the DAC chip on board!!

I've downloaded the apk you uploaded and followed the screenshots. It made zero difference to the sound quality. Poweramp DVC is great on other devices, but on my zenfone it sucks, the audio is distorted, the only way to tolerate the audio quality is by disabling it. Best player I could find so far for my zenfone is Phonograph.

The zenfone 3 zoom have an amazing sound quality and believe me the bass is insane via a good headphones, you just need to find a solution to make use of it's potentials, if you want to go throw troubleshooting provide some more information like the exact model and what software build you are currently running... you are right about the distortion i was very upset with the sound quality at the beginning but poweramp made the DAC work properly.

I wouldn't say that the sound quality on the zenfone 3 zoom is amazing. This DTS audio thing is terrible and makes sound awful. I've installed an even older version of poweramp and tried your solution, and it made a difference with my JBL T210 (not the best one around, surely). However, using Poweramp with DVC on an old Galaxy S6 that I have laying around is still miles better. Sound quality is my only complaint about this phone, that's why I was hoping for a custom rom for this thing.

Yeah you're absolutely right that DTS is a marketing thing and it sucks, you just keep trying on that poweramp 709 build only and try downloading it from APKPURE or somewhere else because the one that i provided was patched with lucky patcher and i hoped it would work with a non-rooted device to skip the activation process but apparently that is not the case, after i reflashed the phone and got rid of the root access i had to install poweramp unlocker and i have to reinstall the the main app every 2 days because without the root i can't seem to be able to activate it, keep digging, i know what a good DAC sounds like, it's not an HTC native level but it's miles ahead of the stock drivers and even better than viper4android module on magisk.

Yeah you're absolutely right that DTS is a marketing thing and it sucks, you just keep trying on that poweramp 709 build only and try downloading it from APKPURE or somewhere else because the one that i provided was patched with lucky patcher and i hoped it would work with a non-rooted device to skip the activation process but apparently that is not the case, after i reflashed the phone and got rid of the root access i had to install poweramp unlocker and i have to reinstall the the main app every 2 days because without the root i can't seem to be able to activate it, keep digging, i know what a good DAC sounds like, it's not an HTC native level but it's miles ahead of the stock drivers and even better than viper4android module on magisk.

No worries about that. I've purchased the app years ago. The only thing now is that I can't allow it to update. Thanks for the hint, the sound is clearly better now.
