Orange Fox works but I get the same message about the password I got with TWRP. What is the difference?
By the way: I was able to flash magisk with TWRP and all seems to be fine, I just disregarded the TWRP notification about the password...

No. Maybe it's coded better for Xiaomi phones?
Request Unlock from Xiaomi.
Wait for 1 week. (98 hours)
Search "XiaoMiTool V2"
Don't bother with image flashing. Just follow XiaoMiTool V2.

This is actually quite easy
1. Unlock the phone using the well documented process
2. Download TWRP for Mi Max 3 (on your PC)
3. Get ADB tools on your PC
4. Download Magisk.zip on the phone
5. Put your phone in fastboot mode
6. Boot TWRP on the phone ( no need to install, you can disregard the encryption comment)
7. Using TWRP flash the Magisk.zip you have downloaded
8. Reboot - and you are rooted

any twrp?

I want the custom recovery,
No, TWRP, till now. Maybe i am wrong! Hope it will release soon, there are some complications with Android 10. We can just wait.

Error 1 usually means wrong twrp or install package.
Could you copy/paste the name of the twrp version you're using and also rom, gapps version?
You should be using:
twrp-installer-daisy-3.2.3-0-offain.zip & img file(or higher)
Or the recovery released by TogoFire a couple of days ago.
Steps:
Boot twrp via adb (img file)
Format / wipe / flash custom rom / flash twrp (zip file) / change slot / reboot to recovery / flash gapps and magisk (optional) / reboot system.

Data folder encrypted in TWRP

Hi, i have the next problem:
After installing TWRP, it starts but doesn't even ask me for a password, so I am not able to acces de data folder, every other opens, it even show me how many free space I have, but can´t acces the internal storage.
Also I'm not able to wipe cache, davlik, data, etc.
I tried to use the command 'decrypt <password>' but it just fail.
Here's the log and the only thing I understand is that TWRP isnt allowed to acces /data folder.
I have the stock official ROM
V12.0.3.0.QCOMIXM
Unlocked bootloader by Mi_flash_unlock.
Can´t solve the problem trying older versions and other TWRP-bases recovery, all of them claims the same problem.

try this file... i hope it works
if didn't work, i think you must do format data
(you will lose all data in internal storage)

Put your phone into Fastboot mode and connect it to your PC via USB cable
execute this fastboot format userdata in your command console (assuming you have Android platform-tools)
The problem is miui 12.0.3 what I did was downgrade to 12.0.1 and the problem is solved
Well, i installed twpr (hellus version) .at first i decrypted data ... Bt then data was encrypted again .. now everytime i had to format my data .. and start all over again .... So for organfox and pitch black ... (Miui 12.03)

First install:
Use the first install.bat file included in the extracted zip folder, in Fastboot mode.
With Twrp/wipe format data type yes/reboot twrp(if errors red lignes, repeat the operation by restarting on the Twrp each time).
You need to update with OTA not directly with TWRP.
You may be using an older version of TWRP.
These roms are Hybrid you can use the update.bat file included in the extracted zip folder, in Fastboot mode.

Disable force encrypt, to remove the encryption on partition
D.F.E is not necessary if you:
Format the data
To update
If you use a TWRP which decrypts the data.
No lock screen security.
