Huawei - excessive mobile data usage (huawei system app ?!! ) - P20 - Huawei P20 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello together,
actually till now i was a silent reader and never had any big issues, but the topic i have since Saturday giving me question marks all over and i would kindly ask if any of you guys have any (even litte) ideas--
I'm using a Huawei P20 and had excessive mobile data usage the last 7 days, coming up with my provider's mail "You have used up to 80%" ...
What I found out so far:
6GB Download Usage / 100Mbyte Upload Usage
under "System & Services" as "General" - so not really helpful.
19. Juni ~ 1,76 GB
25. Juni ~ 0,8 GB
26. Juni ~ 4,3 GB
27. Juni ~ 1 GB
What i checked so far:
1) System update
Should not be the point - my P20 runs with version 10.0.0.185 (that is dated 2020) and Upload via WLAN is enabled
2) Google Play Updates & Huawei AppStore
Should anyhow show up as separate app but even if, update via WLAN only is enabled
3) Virus / Malware
Should also not be the point. Which virus downloads over 6GB data, i'm using bitdefender since 24. June and i'm a dev by myself, so not that easy that i install viruses or malwares ..
To go closer to what app it is i started to limit my bandwitdh to 300Mb and turned of my wifi since yesterday. Also using the app "data counter widget" helps to at least figure out what falls under "General".
Current situation
The only thing i could find out is that the app "com.huawei.iconnect" (Geräteverbindungsservice) have used like 40Mb Mobile traffic today. ( Download ! )
No other app i found, at least not today. And it seems the data which shows under "Energy usages" is only countable for the current day, not the days before..
Does anyone of you guys have other ideas to track down the issue or did anyone encounter something similar?

Hi, I have same problem. Did you find a solution for that problem?

Hi Daven,
i'm still in contact with the Huawei Support, even the technical one, but they did not yet gave me an exact reason why this was happening.
It seems indeed to be the "com.huawei.iconnect" app that is responsible for that.
Support told me that this app is responsible for updates, but that sounds a bit vague to me.
They told me to deactivate "Background data" for the apps:
1) AppGallery
2) PlayStore
3) System updates.
But, they are already set to only download by Wifi.
I did not exactly what they told me to do. What i tried was disabling Mobile data for "HMS Core". And at least in the last 3 days i did not had any excessive usage of "com.huawei.iconnect".
But that might not be the solution.
I will also deactivate mobile traffic for all huawei apps and see if it works for longer time.
Did you check if it's also that app responsible for it? How much data usage you had? And i guess you set all the app and system updates to Wifi only ?
What i did so far that seems to work ( for now )
1.) I deactivate mobile and roaming for the apps:
- HMS Core
- HMS Service framework
- Systemupdates
- AppAssistent
- AppGallery
2.) Setting a daily mobile download limit to be able to act before it happens again
Anyway, absolutely amazing that you buy an not so cheap phone and after 2 / 3 years you won't get any security updates anymore ..

"NaviDot"? Is it the component of the system navigation?
You may try to deactivate this NaviDot on your Huawei P20 Pro.

Wrong Thread? No one said something about NaviDot nor P20 Pro

I must say, i'm done.
Yesterday another 260MB Systemapps
Today another 880MB Systemapps
Today 150 MB from the com.huawei.iconnect App.
The another 730Mb i could not even find where it is coming from not even a single systemprocess is listing that download.
260Mb every day? Thats my traffic.. 10 Gb per month.
To be mentioned: It's still DOWNLOAD not UPLOAD
I feel like Huawei is implementing **** in 3 year old phones to get people buy new one's.
I'm a Linux Admin by myself, so it should be not the problem in front of the screen.
Ii thought about even erase the phone, but what would this change? I didn't install anything in the last weeks ......

Interesting fact:
I just deinstalled "com.huawei.iconnect"
And suddenly it shows in the App "Data Widget Counter"
Removed Apps: 881 Mb
This is interesting.

How you deinstalled "com.huawei.iconnect"?

How you deinstalled "com.huawei.iconnect"?

Last answer from Huawei regarding the app and complaining about another data usage of 1 GB:
Huawei: "Just deinstall/deactivate it".
I pretended to be stupid and ask them:
"How can I uninstall them - it's a system app. And what does this app do?"

I noticed that the data starts to grow when I am connected to wifi without internet (wifi with an exclamation mark). I still can't fix this problem. Have you managed to solve it yet?

Did you check that the app i mentioned is causing this issue?
My problem seems to be solved after i deinstalled it.
Huawei was not helpful. last message was "they don't even know this app". Does Huawei not know what apps they are using? I find other threads about this app so im pretty sure it is from Huawei.

I think, that's same app iconnect.
Which ADB command you use for uninstall this app?

see the links i sent you above, it's written there

Thanks, it's help

[Q] Built in data usage app

This seems to have been asked in a few previous posts, however, I can find no definitive answer.
My problem revolves around a spike in data usage last night. I had decided with the announcement of Google Reader being retired (grrr) I would replace gReader as my default RSS reader with RssDemon (which actually turns out to be just as good).
Once I had manually added all my feeds into RssDemon, I decided to uninstall gReader. This was whilst at home and connected to wi-fi.
Within a couple of hours I received my preset warning over data usage, which upon checking had spiked up 140mb due to 'Removed Apps'.
Now, having only had the phone a couple of weeks, I have monitored data usage very closely from day one, to ensure there are no background services wasting my data plan.
My gReader usage before uninstalling was around the 35mb mark. Why on earth would it jump up so high just from removal ?
Has it actually used the data or is it possible it is an error in the calculation within the Usage app itself ?
Any help / advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi
I have two Note II's. One I bought and rooted (Korean made) then had a few problems so I bought another (made in China - different sellers).
Anyway the first one is good now with PACMAN AOKP 4.2.2 the other still fully Samsung.
I cant get my work exchange email to work on either. Any recommendations for an app? Will happily pay if it will work.
secondly I would like to install a nice bootanimation on my rooted device, something tasteful like the mega droid walk. Will this work on my 4.2.2/ Have had issues installing any bootanimations so I rerooted and dont want to stuff it up again

Anyone able to offer any possible explanations ?
Did you ever change roms? And restore data via titanium backup?
Because if you o store usage data via titanium backup then there is a chance of getting it corrupted. Sometimes after reset it would show me that system. UI has use 1.97 his which actually real racing 3 has use this is I think it's because android signs apps unique id on the basis of which it stores data usage. When you reset it probably assigns them which overlap which previous ones which caused the data usage to show wrong info.
this is SPARTAAA

Does your carrier not provide you with an option to check actual data usage from their end? You could compare and see the actual one with the built in usage data.

External storage is low warning?

I've been getting an external storage is low warning after downloading apps on google play. When I go to settings and check my storage space it shows that I'm not even close to being low. Has anyone else been having this problem?

Yes, I have seen it only once. It happened when downloading multiple apps.

Hope it's just a fixable bug and won't cause any problems down the line.

I'm seeing the same thing, but not just once. For the past couple of weeks (since mid-October or so) this is happening every time I run Play Store update (which I have set not to occur automatically, but it makes no difference even when I change it back).
More importantly, once external storage reports it is in the range of 1 MB or so, every app thereafter dutifully downloads and then fails to install with error message: "Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card". Both "USB storage" (internal to phone but treated like a USB device) and SD card are multi-GB, and there is plenty of room. Still, no installation! :crying:
As I said, I have never saw this happen before the last couple of weeks.
Based on the limited info thus far on this little thread here, I'm not so sure it is my device or apps at all. Still, I will share what I did prior to finding this thread in the hope that it will help others and perhaps give clues to a skilled dev out there. :fingers-crossed:
At first, I thought it was something about my particular device/setup, which I find is almost always the case. Here are my basic particulars:
Droid Incredible "dinc", rooted, security OFF, with Tiny's mod of CM 10.1 (Jelly Bean 4.2.2), plus Tiny's ext4all patch to expand internal memory space to about 748MB.
My internal memory is getting a bit low despite moving most apps to SD card but it is still respectable:
"settings-->apps-->all" reports 200MB "internal storage" free, while Titanium Backup Pro summary for "internal" reports 249MB free.
(Can't quite figure why there is a difference in the numbers, but in this case it shouldn't matter.)
The only other significant recent additions of apps is that I purchased and installed the full version of "Air Control" game on 29 Sept. and purchased a 1-yr sub for Avast Mobile Security (AMS) on 3 Sept. The problem came about some time later, but Air Control's apparently forced presence in internal storage (see workaround #2 below) and AMS's involvement in scanning every app installation may be contributing factor(s).
As far as I can determine from Avast support resources, AMS scanning cannot be turned off temporarily and would have to be fully uninstalled, which is also not very easy on a rooted phone. So I have thus far left that stone unturned!
Maybe this bug is caused by Google Play Store client app or the Google online system? I followed the troubleshooting steps on the "known issues" Google Play Store page -- click on "Contact Us" to launch the troubleshooter and select "Download Unsuccessful":
Google Play Store support page
1. Clearing Google Play and Download Manager data caches alone made no difference.
2. Doing #1 AND rebooting my device did allow successful "update all" multiple installations.
3. Remounting SD Card was suggested, but I have not tried that option as yet. Maybe it would help?
Prior to tweaking the Play Store app (which may be all that is really needed), I found a couple of other workarounds that at least allow me to update my apps with a minimum of fuss -- no rebooting or labourious individual cache clearing required! Maybe these will help others, too:
1. Installed AVG Cleaner app that makes it easy to clear cache from download history + app caches in one swoop. It seemed to make a difference with some but not all of the smaller apps (<5MB), but no go with larger apps like Twitter and Chrome (>5MB). Not absolutely certain this tweak is really doing anything to help out this situation.
2. Uninstalled the game "Air Control" paid version that stubbornly refuses to be moved to SD Card. Titanium Backup Pro (TBP) says it moves it, but in fact it does not. At least some large chunk of it remains in internal storage. Once I uninstalled Air Control using TBP, I was able to install all updates, BUT ONLY MANUALLY (i.e. one at a time) in Play Store. Auto-updating and "update all" in Play Store continued to fail, whether the low external storage warning appeared or not.
3. I searched the web to see what fixes I could find, and came up with a recommendation for Lucky Patcher (LP), which reportedly can remove all traces of a misbehaving app through its "Troubleshooting" process.
Here is where I found this recommendation (see under "Option 1"):
How-to-fix-insufficient-storage-available-error-on-android-phones
I am now aware that LP is warez and does some pretty nasty things to crack security on apps (definitely not what I want to do -- I pay developers when they ask for it and am happy to support them!). I just wonder if LP's less nasty function of app cleaning would resolve this current issue. I actually haven't tried using LP yet in any respect.
Better yet, is there some other less potentially destructive app than LP or some other tweak/procedure that will fix this bug/issue?
As I said earlier, I have not taken the step of uninstalling Avast Mobile Security since it is so involved on a rooted Android.
Hoping there is a skilled dev or two out there who can tackle this one, or at least evaluate the workarounds and tweaks listed here. :fingers-crossed:
Autokiller Pro seems to help
Installing AutoKiller Pro (the paid version) and activating all the tweaks seems to end the problem.
I have had one forced reboot since setting up this app's tweaks, but this happens occasionally anyway, so unless it becomes a more common occurrence, I will not blame the app.
I have never recommended a particular app on XDA before, and I absolutely have no financial or other interest in the app or its dev.
It just seems to work, and all the manual workarounds recommended in my previous post are no longer required. I also do not waste time downloading app updates that the system refuses to install.
Try the free version first if you like, but I found that the tweaks that take effect with the Pro version are the key.
Has something to do with Android 4.3. It happens on my Nexus 7 also.
I would guess it is a TRIM bug. Perhaps the storage is not handling trim correctly.

Strange "RootPA" app on my HTC 10. Is it a potential security issue?

Im using a HTC 10 (EU variant). Today i was scrolling through "Netguard" (if you dont know it, its an app to prevent other apps from internet access), since i configured it to show system apps it displays way more apps than the normal app overview in the settings. In there i found an app called "RootPA" and one called "root", which seems strange since i didnt unlock the bootloader or root on my own. The details in the RootPA entry say "com.gd.mobicore.pa", no idea if thats helpfull to determine the origin of this mysterious app.
Can you help me with this?
Did you Google it?
I did, but the results were not realy usefull. I found someone with a modded Galaxy S3 who deleted a RootPA on accident and broke stuff, but that ssems unrelated. Are there any things i could do to find out more about the app installed on my phone without root?
I cant say its something I've ever seen. If this person in the past removed it, and it broke stuff, that would suggest that it may have been a system app and he was rooted. From what I managed to find on google, it is part of a security suite (mobicore) used by networks to monitor what the state of the phone is, presumably incase something happens, and it was the user fault, and they know for a fact because they have logs of what the phone has done.
[ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE] Allows applications to access information about networks
[INTERNET] Allows applications to open network sockets. (i.e send information)
[READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE] Allows an application to read from external storage.
[READ_PHONE_STATE] Allows read only access to phone state.
A friend of mine got his HTC 10 2 days ago, ill ask him to look for this app. Its unlikely we would have the same virus/whatever installed.
Edit: He just reseted his 10 (due to missing language options, but thats another topic), but still found "root" and "rootPA" on his phone, so its preinstalled (although i still dont understand whats its purpose).
RootPA is provides service for provisioning secure applications that run on ARM trustzone and t-base OS (formerly mobicore). It is preinstalled in some vendors Android devices (search for this string on the internet: htc-devices-to-incorporate-trustonic-t-base-tee), but mostly unused as far as I know. The source code of some versions is available on the Internet (e.g. on github /Faryaab/android_hardware_samsung_slsi_exynos5410/tree/master/mobicore/rootpa).
It has nothing to to with rooting or unrooting the device.

Issues with 12.1.2.0

I've updated with OTA stable update and it's seemed to mess things up. Now I can't attach attachments in any app, open dual apps, it comes up with complete action using and it's blank. It seems to make the phone useless now.
Even when trying to send things it doesn't want to attach it
I too have big problems after updating to Android 11 on the Global Mi10T Pro., but it's version 12.1.1.xxx for me.
Apps like GMail, Maps etc work ok. Many others like Chrome, Brave etc just hang. Gestures no longer work. Settings is unreliable.
PC Suite won't connect - it says I need to update my device.
I wonder whether I have to try a Factory Reset - but that's a pain with no proper backup of all the apps and their state.
EEA version 12.1.2.0 - CRAP!!!
@madnlooney: enable MIUI optimizations in developer options and you will solve problems.
My bugs: at once part of touchscreen where green phone is (for answering calls) just stops working. And it is not working in any app, in screen test app.... until reboot. And it happens randomly... I think this will be my last xiaomi device. I had mi max 3 for over 2 years without resets and stuff, worked like a charm (eu rom). I broke screen (waiting new screen atm).
additional problem (happened on previous versions): mobile data just stop working. I have to turn it off and than on again. I am using both SIM slots (private+work).
Now i have big problem with this since i am on a business trip outside my country and I have problems with phone (and factory reset is out of options, since I have AND USE bank app (among others - work apps), so no go). When I return I will ditch it and buy other brand...
This phone had problems on Android 10 and has problems now too. between mi max3 and this i had poco x3nfc and had problems with it too - I think xiaomi cant keep up with huge amount of models that puts to market.
has anyone maybe some solution to my problems?

Custom roms. Most of the apps will work out of the box if you don't root your device. Few of the banking apps that don't work can be solved with magiskhide...
Thanks, bit as I mentioned, not possible ATM, I cant open bootloader and I dont have access to bank, since i am >1500km out of my country.
Considering that is 2021, it looks like i am ditching xiaomi (after 7 years).

If we enable that, how to install split apk files? is there a solution for that too?
dual apps are miui thing, nothing to do with miui optimization
Well, EEA version 12.1.2.0 - is CRAP indeed!!!
It has been a childish attempt like: Hurray we are on android 11 too...!!!
First, they have not checked the main feature of a phone... To make and end Phone calls....
The "end" button does not respond sometimes. Randomly.
I've seen this reported in several discussions and no response from support.
Second, after the update to 12.1.2.0 SECOND SPACE broke..!!
The option to add and remove files disappeared.
A bad surprise, as the only option given, for the data you had saved in second space is to DELETE..
The import export option for files just vanished.
We can only hope that Miui 12.5 will make the Mi 10t Pro a descent Phone as it is an excellent hardware.
What I hate with this v12 is, (not sure if it was same with the previous ones) to be forced to use the mi search. If someone knows how to revert it back to Google search, will be greatly appreciated.
And if any Xioami staff or responsible seeing this message, i need to tell this. ’I don't have to use your crappy search *hit, and noone can force me to do something for a device I paid for. You have all the stupid ’features' and ads in a single thing. And the recommendations, ohh, will make me vomit...
Before you recommend me what to search for, let me recommend you something first. Go and learn why Google is doing the best with keeping the apps pure and simple. When I want to search for the best wines to drink for dinner, you're forcing me to see the turtle copulation video. What a smart software.
As I said before, if someone can help me to delete this useless app to the ground, will appreciate a lot.

Question The new Android 12

I have a few questions regarding the new update.
1. Does region matter?
I have a RETEU device, is there a reason why flashing the RETBR wouldnt work?
2. Is it worh it? Are the features (mostly design and privacy interest me) Android 12 promised there and functional?
3. How is the battery life on it?
I would love if you guys could help me out since i am very exited about the new features!
Also is there a Third Party Android 12 ROM, or GSI or something, any of you guys have used and recommend that is somewhat functional as a daily driver?
Thanks and much love!
No harm in waiting... 12 is a mess across all devices.
I bailed with Adroid 10 and don't regret spurning 11 and up one bit. CPU cycle sucking scoped storage became mandatory with 11; 12 is likely worse. I would research this first.

Hey,
short feedback from my experiences since upgrading to Android 12 in Germany.
1. Sorry, no idea.
2. Privacy features seam to work fine. Only problems I experienced are the following.
- You can now deny new / formerly hidden permissions. Denying them can brick apps. (example denying the "alarm / reminder" permission bricks the app "Notebook" until permission is granted again).
- All quick access setting have to be sorted again.
- new "deny all microphone access" in quick setting does what it should. For me it did it's job too literally. My interpretation "deny all apps except calling" but all MEANS all (yeah I know obvious... duh....).
3. Haven't performed any special comparisons but it feels same or maybe even a bit longer.

Hi,
to be honest, I have no idea what you mean. I guess I'm too much of a noob regarding Android internals. I mean no offense. Would you be so kind to briefly explain this? Thanks
--------
Some of my own experiences / questions.
Background:
I'm using my device with the work profile to keep annoying apps at bay.
Using "Shelter" app.
Using "Aurora Store" in work profile to install apps.
No factory reset was performed since upgrade.
Not rooted.
Problem:
Since the upgrade to Android 12 I'm experiencing an quite annoying bug. Using the "phone" app (private profile) I have no sound and microphone sometimes. So I can't hear and can't be heard. If I'm activating the work profile and use the "phone" app (again from private profile) I suddenly have sound and microphone.
Fix / workaround:
Another way to "fix" this problem is to reboot the phone. After reboot it works for an undefined time. I haven't tested if the problem starts after using work profile and deactivating it again. I'm testing it and I'll try to not forget to post an update for others.
FYI:
BTW if sound from other apps does work, wasn't tested until now. If you need to call you normally have no time for testing, so reboot it was for me.
Tested solutions:
Tested some general "solutions" from REDDIT & Co.
Editing settings in "Sound & vibration" -> "Audio effects": recommended "activate Dolby ATMOS". Phone doesn't have that so i resetted the setting (after tapping "Audio effects" tap "Settings" at the bottom then tap 3 dot menu and tap "Reset")
- DIDN'T WORK
Suggestion it's a carrier problem
Set network selection to manual and select your corresponding network.
- DIDN'T WORK
Deactivate or activate "Wi-Fi calling". (mine was activated so I deactivated it)
- DIDN'T WORK
Enable or disable "VoLTE". (mine was activated so I deactivated it)
- DIDN'T WORK
My questions:
Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
Has anyone found a solution?

Great formating and great feedback! Thanks so much!
The first point seems irrelevant anyways since the update is now for RETEU too.
I might try to upgrade tonight but i might wait a bit since i try and degoogle my phone as much as i can so i will probably soft brick it once or twice.
If I run into any of the issues you have i will come back with more feedback!
Regarding what BlackHawk said, from my understanding somehow the new scoped storage feature ( that allows apps to have access to only selected files and folders instead of device wide storage access) somehow messes with the CPU.
He most likely knows more but thats just my basic understanding and interpretation of what he said.
Thanks again and have a great day!
