A place to discuss AMD based Gaming Laptops

About a week or two I bought the ROG G14 Zephyrus (GA401QM). This thing is a beast. I cannot believe the power they packed I to such a slim chassis.

Yeah, it has been my favorite laptop. But the new Razer Blade 14 is even sleeker and offers up to an RTX [email protected]

The only game I've struggled with is Flight Simulator. Didn't care enough to tweak the settings though, got bored of it. Otherwise I tried Forza Horizon and get over 120fps

You are also paying a premium though for a 3080. Also Razer Blade doesnt have upgradable RAM, no an issue today, but will be down the line. Not a bad machine by any stretch though. My G14 is at 40GB right now
I mismatched the memory (on purpose) because RAM with 22 latency vs 20 on-board latency is $287 vs $160. I lost 4fps using the RAM with 22 CAS but that could also be do to Windows 11. I can live with it if it saves me $120.

Tegra 3-based gaming console running Android

Slightly off topic considering it has little to do with the HTC One X and more to do with Tegra 3... but: caught this little gem yesterday http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console
Basically it's a quad-core Tegra 3 board (I'm presuming it has the ninja core as well) with these features:
1GB of RAM
8GB of internal flash storage
HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth LE 4.0
USB 2.0 (one)
Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad (add $30 per extra controller)
Android 4.0 < more Tegra 3 love in other words
And the price is $119 shipped! ($99 if you live in America, which I guess, considering the nature of the product that has brought us together, less of you guys do than is common for forums )
So I guess what this means for us (other than a pretty epic deal on a very cool gadget) is that there will be more Tegra 3-based games being developed in the future, and generally more Tegra 3-based Linux development! Congratulations everyone!
Cheap console, cheap games, good graphics - recipe for like Nintendo era again :good:
Oh man!
That thing is gonna be awesome!!
maybe one should throw 225$ at them!
Ouya gaming console raises $2 million on Kickstarter, doesn't know what to do with it
When we first detailed the Ouya $99 Android-based game console yesterday, we had a feeling it would become a hot property over at Kickstarter. But still, there's no way we anticipated this: the project has just raised $2 million in its first day, having sped past its initial $950,000 goal within a record-breaking 12 hours. Now, in an email to backers, the project has asked for feedback on its "stretch goals" -- in other words, what it should do if it makes even more cash and is able to set its sights on loftier ambitions. If you're a backer then check your email, if you're a potential backer then check the source link, and if you're a traditional VC then weep.

just watched the video
very impressive effort
so now we have Nvidia's THD initiative, Nexus 7, PS Mobile and Ouya
who needs overclocked Mali
consider this, how many devices will be based on mali? vs how many containing T3? you do the math
If you ask me Nvidia low cost to the masses tegra policy seems to be working like magic
It reminds me of this article Tegra 3's Graphics: Untapped Potential?
Saw this yesterday from a gaming site, it looks impressive. Might pick one up just for an emulator fact.
If I'm correct they said this device came easy to root and install anything you wanted. I'm excited to see this run.

Honestly I think we can expect better graphics from this thing than the Wii! I'd like an ethernet port or 802.11ac WLAN though, 802.11n often isn't enough for 1080p content.
I saw this yesterday too. They hit their budget/investment requirement in hours! Its not a surprise as its a really really great idea if implemented well. People love gaming on tvs and since almost everyone owns one, picking up a console like this is very affordable. Its price beats most consoles on the market. Forget consoles, even Tegra3 smartphones such as the HOX and others.
On a side note good for gamers on the hox as it will definitely push the THD powered games market means more and better THD games on the market can possible come.

there is one more important thing
T3 will not be left to dust unlike T2
TV consoles last for years and so no dev can simply neglect optimizing for it
if they collected backers this fast, imagine the sales for this thing
however i doubt they will hit their price point
they will also face another issue by the time this thing launches, T4 will start shipping and hence you have an outdated platfrom on day 1 and it won't keep up with the incredible pace of mobile

they linked to this video from their spec list
i imagine Gameloft is starting to panick after all the hate they collected in Tegra3 owners

Actually now that you mention it and I think more, it could be as small or basic as a Rasberry Pi PC with a little bit more. But thats taking the price into consideration. If they really aim at 99$ or so thats how I would do it.
A small device with basic functionality such as wifi(necessary as console gamers won't be downloading .apks and such they would buy directly from play store) output for tv and input for controllers. Obviously the mainboard and some memory and a few usb ports but nothing extra.

I haven't really looked up on Tegra2 but you sound like it just died. Tegra3 on the other hand is a huge success imo. HOX, Nexus 7, Ouya, etc. like you mentioned. The Tegra3+ they plan to release won't be as successful imo.

the 5th core can be used in a console differently to drive the UI and free the other cores for their main job
their release date is march
dunno its starting to feel we are going backwards after all the advancing we made with the PS3/Xbox360
why do we need this when the next gen is around the corner?
T3 makes sense in a mobile but as a console i dunno
I nearly brought this I even entered my details then cancelled.
This is why I wanted it- cheap and more than likely be worth more than the money you pay for it. It looks great.
The reason why I cancelled is yes games on my phone are great but personally I don't think they compare to a console.
I don't see a lot of devs making games expecially for this either. I just see this playing phone or tablet games on my tv.
I can do this already if I buy a cable for my phone and use a bluetooth controller.
I hope they do well as more tegra 3 games for us would be great

I don't think ouya is really aiming at the hardcore gaming market, the Wii came around the same time as the Xbox 360 and the PS3, yet it wasn't nearly as good, that's because they went for the casual and younger gamer, and their needs are very likely both met and exceeded by the Tegra 3.
And yeah, 5th core could power background tasks like say a chat network similar to what Xbox live has.

so far im puzzled as their attitude toward the T3
if you look at the A7 config files, its detecting the game as "medium_android" with almost everything off, not a single reference to tegra
its as if it doesn't exists

its just hit me! this thing will fly!
OnLive and this are a match made in heaven, but I think they need an Ethernet port
the more I think of it the more I feel tegra3 is just ingenious, yes the sgs3 processor is stronger and the snapdragon 4 is more efficient
but we r missing the point, t3 is ingenious because of its older process and low cost nature, as well as prism, direct touch, lp core and amazing media abilities
add to this a ready gaming centric SDK and u can see why they r selling them like hot cakes
as a whole t3 is the best solution out there, its unique, capable and well supported
I dont think qualcomm has a chance of catching up this round
when NV ceo answered we will release quad first and then devs will figure out how to u use it, he was spot on!

For this time. Playing Games on Note 8.0 is ok. I have Fifa 2012, MC4, Fieldrunner 2, Real Rancing 3 and them run ok. But, I think for a longtime isn't good choice.
My son just got this tablet and I can tell you every game we have put on it has worked flawlessly. For us any game that works on my 10.1 has played as well if not better on the note 8 (including real racing 3).

All devices with Exynos 4412 are proved to be great in stability test, almost no throttling.
I'm doing a complete thumb suck here, but I expect the mali400 gpu that's in the Note 8.0 to start showing it's age in a year to two years.
What I mean by that is top games will still be very playable... But lag will become more and more noticeable in certain areas of the game. Either that or some of the bells and whistles will be turned off in the version that's 'officially' available to us on the Play Store.
After all... There will be a never ending push for ever more demanding games to 'show off' just how much better flagship devices are to previous generations. The Note 8.0 has a weaker gpu than the phone I bought 2 years ago... It can't be *that* much longer before it can no longer keep pace...
Just sayin....

I think note 8.0 better. And maybe 6 month for heavy game. Normal games is no problems. Sorry for my bad English.
Sent from my GT-N5100 using xda app-developers app
The note 8 is very fast but uses the Mali 400 GPU, an older (is it two years old now?) GPU.
For gaming, I'd hold off until after Google I/O to see what devices are announced. If the N7 is refreshed with the Mali 604 or so (and/or a Tegra 4) and a decent display, you might want to wait until it can be ordered.
In ordinary use, the GN8 is the fastest Android device I've used, and has the least lag of any Android device I've used. The Nexus 7 is very good, but it's just not playing in this league. I'm sure there are some Tegra optimized games that the N7 will do better on, but the UI overall is not this quick.
Incredibly fast in my use, and I play numerous graphics intensive games. DEFINITELY better than n7, trust me, I've owned both
Sent from my GT-N5110 using xda app-developers app
Can the Mali 400 GPU be overclocked with a custom kernel in order to squeese a little more performance from it?
Overclocking the Tegra 2 GPU on my ASUS Transformer as well as the CPU made a big difference in its gaming performance.

I'm having a little trouble tracking down exactly when the Mali-400 MP gpu was first released, but here's an article on it from 2008: !!!
http://beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=48319
It was still a pretty beefy gpu in the Galaxy SII in 2011... But as far as I know was upstaged by the Adreno 220, which was to be found in the HTC Sensation (the phone I bought in 2011).

What sort of things do you need windows for that you don't think you can do on a tablet.
In answer to your question an x86 based windows tablet (excluding the surface pro) should theoretically be able to run the x86 port of android but it's not going to be the sort of experience you are thinking of.
If you want windows buy a laptop.
If you want android buy a tablet.
we are simply not to the point where you can have both of those worlds on one device. you can do full desktop linux on most android tablets but the experience is usually quite bad.
That being said this tablet will provide an impressively robust computing experience thanks to multi-window and the s-pen but it's no replacement for a laptop for some work.
as far as remote clients go Spashtop is the best performing one I've found it can even handle games and video playback somewhat smoothly
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.splashtop.remote phone version
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.splashtop.remote.pad Tablet version

Under the hood, the device is powered by a Haswell-series Intel Core i5 processor and manages to fit a 13.3-inch, 3,200 x 1,800 touchscreen into a 1.29kg package that measures just 13.9mm thick. Other notable specs include an S Pen with 1,024 degrees of sensitivity.

If you own another flagship, can you tell us how they perform side by side.
Honor 8 can launch apps really fast. Apps that I use daily are WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube. It is a real enjoyment to see app loads that fast compare to my older phone.

Launching speed? Its the fastest android phone right now. I own it and all I can say it is comparable to ip6s in launching speed. Anandtech did confirm this on their review too.

I saw that too, was actually a factor in me going for it over the 7. But yeah, it's lightning fast.
For sure honor 8 is the best phone for launch speed so far. Even faster than oneplus 3 and iPhone 7. iphone 7 is only faster at launching games

Gaming Phone Hype

So i have been using my ROGPHONE 2 (12/512) for almost 1 month now. Getting ready for Diablo Immortal to launch(been 2 years and still not launched) Played CODM, Ragnarok M, Temple Run 2, PVZ 2, NFS, Asphalt, Jurassic World and the list goes on.
And recently i bought a $200 Nintendo Switch Lite for the sake of Diablo 3 Eternal Collection and for the sake its only $200.Im a huge Diablo fanboy. And turns out "Console" is still better than "Smartphones".
My point is whats with this Gaming Phone Hype? Best benchmark bla bla bla. My ROGPHONE 2 at times stutter while playing games. Whereas my Switch Lite dont.
Yes i know its better to have 1 device which can do all rather than have multiple devices. But the differences is outrageous. How can a $200 Console do better than a $900 "Gaming" Smartphone?
*im not mentioning the games available for console vs mobile*
Dedicated gaming consoles with built in fan are very different from mobile phones with gaming features. The first one usually does better at gaming. It is supposed to. It is the only thing that it is made for with all devs focusing on just one hardware. On mobile phones however, you have hundreds of different hardwares with limited thermal envelope. I'd be very interested to see a gaming video comparison between your note 10+, rog 2 and P30 pro..

Between those 3. And lets say CODM. The best is ROGPHONE 2. Why? Because no notch. Yes i can hide the notch but the area near the notch is very unresponsive. I have made many threads about this in AC forums.
But the ROGPHONE 2 section there is dead. That's why im here xD
yes i agree with you. i dont know whats this hype is all about. my main reason why i bought this phone is the battery. and i already knew that mobile gaming sucks. all high end phone sucks at certain point when you play at high settings and its better to buy gaming PC or consoles if you are really on gaming.

Thank you for not bashing me. I mean even with 1 game installed. It still wouldnt do as good as consoles. People be boasting stuff like BEST GAMING PHONE and so on but its not even gaming... I know i can buy those add ons to have buttons but its gonna cost even way more.
And i know its a smartphone. Supposed to make multiple devices become 1. But i personally have a device for every need. Like an A&K for music, PS4 for games,Mirrorless Camera for photos, Laptop for work and so on.
And not to mention the amount of cash needed to be powerful in mobile games. Pro Non Casher will always lose to Noob Casher. But on consoles its different.
And yes this phone has crazy battery life. Haha. With no games installed I could easily get 2 days of normal usage.

Hi guys, I can relate to everything you said and was also thinking about the switch. But as I bought this phone for 500$ it was a no brainier.
The sad state of gaming in Android is not a hardware issue but bad Android OS api implementation. This is supposedly handled in new vulkan api. But the worst problem is the crap state of content, with virtually all games adopting freemium models which kill all games. For some reason people expect to get things for free on mobile and don't want to pay for good games so companies delivered free crap which makes you pay to play. 5,6 years ago there were plenty of good premium games, now they are rare. I'm actually now checking game streaming services.

It's all semantics.
Let's grade all the available gaming phones. Is ROG 2 the best among them? If yes then it's obviously the best gaming phone!
Now back to your comparison of gaming phones against dedicated gaming devices and consoles.
That's an unfair and improper way of comparing them. Cos one set of devices is specialised in executing only a single task (playing games) while the other set countless tasks (calls, sms, email, photography, multimedia, data storage, web activity, gaming, navigation, health,l and a ton of other things ranging from controlling your smart home & CCTVs to being used for penetration testing etc).
Maybe that's one of the key factors ??*

ROG 2 was advertised as the best gaming "phone", not the best gaming "device" or "handheld".
The games being laggy is the issue of Android itself and not ASUS. ASUS has literally delivered the best gaming "phone" till date. No other "phone" beats it in gaming.

Yes i know that. And i did try to just use my ROGPHONE 2 for just 1 game which is CODM. And it did stutter. Not often but it does. Many factors can cause the stutter but it does stutter.
Why are we even comparing a mobile device vs a dedicated gaming console in the 1st place ? ?
Rog phone 2 is a great phone simple...
The 120hz AMOLED, 6000mah battery , sd 855+ already won my heart

Maybe the issue is with that game bro, not the phone. Are you using the cooler? If the phone gets too hot then it will throttle both CPU and GPU then gaming performance will decrease for sure, there's no way around that. That's how devices with passive cooling work. But if the phone remains cool then there's no reason for the game to stutter as SD855+ is powerful enough to run any game in the playstore. Unless the game itself is poorly optimized, which is not a sign of a quality triple A game, as it should run fine on much weaker hardware..

I played this game a lot and it never had a stuttered. It is actually one of the better optimised games. In online games, stutters can also be the result of bad network connection.

Games on iOS are usually better optimized. Game devs just spend more effort on iOS games because they get more profit from iOS than from Android.
I have a pro max and a rog 2. The pro max will only run heavy games for like 20mins then it will get hot and brightness will go down to 50% or less. That is not a pleasant experience if you're a serious gamer. The iPhone can only hit peak performance for a short time because it is a passively cooled device, despite the powerful hardware.
In short, just use the switch or xbox or Playstation for serious gaming, games are much much more optimized for the hardware there and they are all actively cooled dedicated gaming consoles..

CODM stutters on iOS too - especially with a crappy internet connection. I play CODM on the ROG2, connected to a 5G router and no issues, but when connected to 100mbit HFC broadband connection i get the odd stutter. CODM is smooth 99% of the time for me, so its something beyond the phone thats your issue..
Maybe you should stick to the Nintendo... Sounds like its the only solution for someone like yourself. :good:
Anyone having issues with lag or stutter in game is misidentifying the issue causing the stutter or lag. Or you just can't figure out XMode. This phone is a beast. Thermal throttling isn't an issue. If you're trying to compare a gaming console of any level to a smartphone you probably like to compare apples to oranges too. Why not add gaming PCs to the mix? Understanding the difference in platforms would be a good place to learn why this phone is so amazing, and is cheap for the amount of tech in it, especially when you consider how well it runs heavy games. I can play Classic Matches in PUBG for hours on end and even charge without ever dropping a frame. Show me any other phone in the world besides other 2nd Gen Gaming Phones that can do that.....go ahead, I'll wait..........
Pro Tips: Don't Buy this phone for using as a phone you carry and use as a phone.
Know XMode and set it up for every game.
Use the fan for heavy games, always! (my fan never leaves the phone except for cleaning)
Use the fastest data connection you can for gaming. Lag comes from servers, not this phone. Mobile Data almost always has higher ping than wifi.
If you aren't hyped about this phone you're probably not in to mobile gaming, so why do you even have this phone? Much better phones out there to be just phones. This phone is for playing mobile games.
For reference I played on a Note 9 and an iPhone XS Max before getting this ROG. To say this phone has allowed me to win battles I would have lost on my other phones, would be understating it. This phone is a God at gaming. Can't wait for the ROG 3.

The state of mobile gaming is getting better all the time. Everyone keeps talking about how terrible it is. Yeah so terrible the two biggest games in the history of the world are both mobile games. You can combine all the rest of the gaming platforms and still not get close to the active daily player base of mobile and it's most popular games. So keep being snooty about gaming superiority, and I'll keep laughing all the way to the bank. Mobile is the future of all tech. If you can't, won't, or don't see that then all I can say is have fun stuck in the past. Not everyone can afford computers and consoles and cameras and TVs. But you can get all that in one device that also makes phone calls and most people can afford one, so do the math, it's pretty simple. Player base numbers alone make mobile the superior platform. Those numbers already working to continue to take out PC and Console hardware gaps and limitations. Pushing phones to be capable of more and more. Will phones ever be as capable as something with a large die cast for processors? No. More room is always better. But the gap will be so small some day soon you'll have one game released for all platforms. Wait, that already happened like two years ago. Only a matter of time before they all do.
I sold my XBox One X to convert to mobile gaming all the time. Because I see the future of gaming and mobile tech all colliding and the lines between platforms being blurred in to non existence(Stadia). We've already seen mobile players beat out console and PC players in Fortnite. How bad is mobile gaming really? I think I've read some of the most biased and uneducated opinions here. Which is sad, this is XDA.

To be honest, I couldn't find a worthy contender to get as a daily driver for the last 2 years. I don't really do gaming on it apart from occasional pubg game, or some emulation. BUT the sheer firepower this phone holds bought me, especially screen+battery+3.5mm jack+front stereo speakers. And I know this phone will easily last me another 3-4years of usage (with occasional battery exchange of course). I considered note10+, but lack of 3.5mm jack and no stereo speakers killed it for me (former nexus6 owner). So You can't tell people not to buy this phone as a daily driver, maaaybe if someone works with a lot of dust this phone might not be the best idea, but there is a fix to that too (basically wrap it around -screen with stretch foil for daily usage - no need to make holes for ports, except if you use the 3.5mm jack)
