Question Is there a secret to hiding the Google discover page? - Nubia Red Magic 6

I just got the 6r and I can't for the life of me find how to discover the Google discover page that comes on the left page
Since I can't use a 3rd party launcher this is already a big enough annoyance to make me sell the phone tomorrow
I absolutely hate having more than 1 page on my home screen

what's Google Discover? is it the one where it tells you the news and can do google searches?

Yeah
I've never seen a launcher that doesn't allow you to disable it

WOW, RM still has horrific sw. What phone doesn't allow you to change the launcher? WTF?

I mean... you can use a different launcher, but you can't use gesture controls with them. I've had too many oleds get the nav buttons built in to ever go back to use that again.

ah yes I know what you mean. It's the first thing I tried to disabled and found out you can't. I think the Youtube reviews don't reflect how pants this phone is at being a normal phone. It's amazing for gaming, sucks as a phone.

I honestly can't even make sense of why this is a thing
The only way I can figure out to get rid of it is disabling google...which then removes the ability removes google search

I tried that and it still shows on mine. I use duck duck go as a browser anyway. But then I found out that you can't do an app search like on a Samsung where you pull down the screen and it allows you to search for an app. You go in that news feed thing and type on google the app and then it shows it on your phone too.

Can you lock phone settings

This seems like a pretty obvious question but all the searches I do come up with unrelated stuff about the phone lock screen but.....
Can you set some sort of pin/pattern to access the settings menu of your phone? basically so anytime someone clicks on a settings shortcut they get a prompt asking for a code to access it.
Seems like a nice and simple security measure but I can't seem to find anyway to make it possible.
Maybe this is a more general Android question than one for the GN but a GN and ICS is what I have
Look for "app protector" in the market.
Thanks but the free lite version on the market has so pretty bad reviews for it that look nasty
Honest question, why would you want to do this?
Well to stop people like my kids wiping settings like market to buy in app purchase with no pin is one example

Can't you tell them not to do that? Otherwise they don't get to use your phone?
Seems more like a parenting issue all of the sudden..
Well that was just an example another would be to stop people resetting Google wallet if youloose your phone and have no lock screen on wake
i set a PIN password on mine (which requires you to enter a PIN every time the phone is rebooted, and i use the autolock toggle from Widgetsoid 2.x Donate to temporarily disable the PIN lock when i'm in a safe area like at home for instance (no kids here). the PIN is restored by the OS if the phone is rebooted.
i dunno about the GNex, but on my Moto phone, you can bypass apps like App Protector by rebooting the phone into safe mode. that's not a risk with my method, access is controlled by the OS as long as the PIN is not temporarily disabled.
You really should be setting up a phone lock AND minding who's using your phone.
For app purchases, you can setup a pin for the market if you're worried about your kids purchasing apps, but the system-wide restrictions settings are quite limited compared with the setting which iOs offers.

I kind of agree but some time its a pain to constantly have the screen lock on
As for app purchaces like I said above all you have to do is go into settings\apps
and clear market data and the pin code is gone and you can buy anything again
And your kids would know how to go into settings and clear cache for the market and then go buy a app?
It's simple. Don't let your kids use your phone, I don't understand why you would let them use it anyway. You give it the risk of having it being dropped / damaged / etc.

how dare you ask a question like that?
you should not ask for an app that does things like that unless you can provide a legitimate reason with sufficient evidence supporting your claims.

Guys please stop these kinds of useless responses. If you have an answer, a useful one of course, share it with us. If not, leave your personal suggestion to yourselves.
I bet most of you don't have kids, and apparently didn't have an answer to his request. However, instead of trying to find an app that could help the guy, you offer something you are obviously not qualified to be asked about in the first place.

That was a simple reply trying to figure out why the kids are doing it. It was just over an example he used.
Now you are clearly OT, however, what is a 14 months doing with your phone?

Let's see. My 14 month old knows how to press the power button and slide to unlock. Usually she goes straight for the camera as she says picta picta and repeatedly presses the shutter button.
Again if you were a parent you would understand.

Let me ask this again, why does your 14 month old have access to a 600-700 dollar device? It is not a toy for babies.
heh Most of the unlock apps in the market do let you lock the settings so that's that problem solved guess I just think it would be a nice default in a rom

Slider apps???

I like the new slide feature that's in Gmail. Action Launcher has said feature and I love it. I just love Nova Launcher a lot better. Is there a slider feature widget in Nova Launcher that I can access all of my applications available or a stand alone app for this task. I've done searches but so far, they have yielded insubstantial results.
Yup. It's called "Swaps" do a search in the PlayStore for it. It's a nice app.

Any chance you have a link to the play store item? I did a search for swaps and came up with nothing but a crap ton of face swap apps and games where you move pieces around but I would like to check this out

Google Now Launcher FYI

I have been using it on my GS3 and N7 and wanted it on my GS5. Play store said it was not compatible on our new device. I have the app in a Dropbox folder so I installed it from there. Works perfect and really helps to organize all your apps
Where did you get the apk? Did a quick search and didn't find it. I can do a better search later just thought you could give me a short cut.

Here you go my friend!
Read a warning over at android central. Although it works perfect, for some strange reason putting the phone into ultra-power saving mode causes the launcher to lose any settings you might have changed, too include layout.
If you are using it it might be a good idea to turn off ultra power saving mode.

[APP] All in One Gestures

Really a great gestures app to mimic iOS gestures. I use the navigation gestures option because I could not deal with the navigation bar not matching my keyboard. The gestures work pretty well and I got used to them, but I did not like the Back option. Too many times trying to go back ended up with me opening recents or going home.
I really wanted a gesture to swipe the screen from left to right to go back and this app allows me to. Works great with a few customization options. It was removed from the playstore but the apk can still be sideloaded
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/ys-liang/all-in-one-gestures-2/all-in-one-gestures-2-5-9-release/
Thanks for sharing. IMHO The OnePlus gestures are the best I've tried on any phone. The more options there are, the better off we are.
Thanks for sharing, I love the Swype from the left to go back feature
Hey Guys, if you wan't, you can also try an app called 'Fooview', which is available in playstore (No need Root access) and its amazing, you can set the swipe option from right to left for back in this app as well. it also comes with a browser, file manager, and allow to take screen short of any specified portion on your screen. It will also help to convert the 'letters' in an image to edit/copy. The main advantage is it work with very less battery drain and comes with small in size. this is one of the best app I have ever used. and I'm using this for the last 2 Years. Just try it, it is amazing.

Never mind, Ignore it. It will work perfectly.
I found both of these apps to be scetchy and not any good.
I rather sugest the app called Fluid Navigation Gesture on play store.
It gives you the Miui10 Navigations that work great without any overlay or stuff like that.

Yea, but this will work perfectly without giving the location permission. And this app is available in play-store, which is verified by the google, then will it be a malicious app ?

There are many apps which get through the checks. Check the news, you'll find many articles about google removing app from the play store every now and then.
Even a seemingly trustworthy app can do a lot of harm. Even if the app is a bit sketchy its better to stay away from it.

I agree. I've tried damn near all the gesture apps but I keep going back to fooview. It's like 20 apps in one with an abundance of gesture options.

I find the navbar gestures severely lacking. Swipe from left or right edge up for back? On which planet? Ever tried this swipe on Chrome with a longish text loaded? All you get is a scroll back and not back. Or maybe I am misunderstanding the directions. How difficult is it to add a graphic to illustrate?

Question Any way around the "App not optimized for this device"?

A couple apps that I use frequently, namely Walmart and Starbucks, will not allow install because "This app is not optimized for this device"... Is there a safe way around this?
I don't know about Starbucks but, Walmart app installed from backup from Galaxy S10 and is working just fine. Auto rotate and everything.
If it won't load it needs to be updated (the app).
Why would you want either one running as an app? Pure trashware. Don't know about Starwhatever but Walmart runs fine in the browser. Best kept there.
FB, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instascam, etc are a stone's throw from outright malware. Even if I can I don't want to even use those sites in the browser. I'll never load them as an app.
Not trusted apps... actions have consequences, be careful what you allow to run on your device.
The restore from my original device and then an app store update did the trick. Thanks.

Kies was buggy too.
On the same device/firmware version it may work ok, I'll test it next reload but just for homepage settings, maybe apps.
Always use another backup method for critical data' SmartSwitch should never be the primary backup.
If it works, swell... but don't count on it

Type the name of the app followed with apk download into Google and many sites who have the apk should pop up. Download it and simply install it.
