Themes / Apps / Mods Must-have Apps For Your Phone? - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

We all have apps that travel with us from device to device, the ones you couldn't see yourself NOT having. So, what ya got?
For people new to the Fold series (such as myself), what are your must-have apps from your standard form factor phones that you definitely want on your Fold 3? For those who do have some experience, what are your must-have apps that you recommend on the Fold?
My favourites (links included) would be:
-Nova Launcher Prime. Well worth the upgrade to premium, and will hopefully work well on the Fold! Been my go-to launcher since the OnePlus One.
-Black Wallpapers. They've got a pretty solid selection of wallpapers in loads of categories!
-Zedge. Ringtones? Notification tones? Absolutely TONS of them on here, could not recommend enough!
-Moon+ Reader Pro. If you read a lot, this is a no-brainer. Easily my favourite app for reading on a phone/tablet. Supports a bunch of different file formats! Free version also available.
-Thumper. I love this game so much, I have it on my phone, PS5, and PC, and regularly play all of them. Awesome rhythm game, not like your typical rhythm games though.
I'm also eager to check out The Room game series on the Fold. I've never played them on a tablet, just a phone, so I can't wait to try them out on a big beautiful screen.

Google Photos: every picture/video I take goes to the cloud right away so I never lose memories.
notif: lets you put little reminders into the notification shade
WallRod: frequently updated pack of minimal wallpapers

Blokada 5

I wish the play store would allow tags for managing apps, so I could hide the complete junk, or select one for mass installation.
My list, in no particular order
Cx file explorer
Etchdroid
Onshape
Net analyser pro
Juice ssh pro
Zeta torrent pro
Hex shaders premium
Adguard
Termux

This is my first fold, is there a specific app that is great for wallpapers that will fit the native resolution that are of material design?

What is best ad blocker, given this phone might not be rootable?
The same for a file manager?

Never heard of that app. I will check it out.

Good Guardians & Good Locks from Samsung App Store

Root Explorer for file management...........have been using for several years (and you don't have to be rooted).
Launcher - have been using Nova Prime (currently using the beta releases). Wondering, of all of the launchers in the Play Store, which is the best for battery saving?
Ad blocker - I do the following:
Settings, Connections, More connection settings, Private DNS - dns.adguard.com

Try WallCraft. As soon as I opened it, it identified my device and resolution and will only show wallpapers that fit. I'm sure you can find whatever kind you'd like in there, there's TONS!

Must have apps?

This is my first android, and was wondering what apps are a must like memory cleaners and task killers to just great apps
Thanks!

Hi this is my first android as well (got mine yesterday)
I must admit i havn't really installed that many apps yet.. but i can recommend the "google goggles" and "asphalt 5"
-TB-
I would also like to know.
Performance increasing apps?
Useful (swiss army knife) apps?
Amazing recreational must haves?
Thanks.
AutoKiller - memory managment
Barcode Sanner - for getting links to apps from the internet
If using mytracks:
Linda file manager - to import tracks
My track editor
A nice widget is smooth calendar if you have a lot of appointments.
Greetings from Austria
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Shazam is awsome
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I love the SMS popup program
Australian phone - Found some of the best ones were ES Task Manager, Handcent for SMS/MMS and the ability to change tones via, Camera 360 for an app which enhances everything you can do with the camera, SMS backup to backup to Gmail account and Wheres my Droid which allows you to send a message to the phone when it is on silent which takes the silencer off and triggers the ringtone, enabling you to find it if you have misplaced it. Also another handy one is 3G watchdog which keeps an eye on your data usage.
I like:
AutoKiller (needs root)
Launcherpro
Homeswitcher
Appremover
Appsinstaller
MyBackup Pro
Fancywidget
Extended Controls
LeshaK's update.zip found here
I'm going to have to second launcherpro, really great app.
I can't find fancywidget in the market, is it under a new name maybe?
Also, while shazam is really nice and very accurate for commercial radio, is there another app that's aimed at more obscure/australian music music (I listen to Triple J if that helps)?
Finally can someone recommend a good news widget for australia.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I have also noticed this, although some songs arent registered in the shazam database

HTC complaned and it got pulled off the market i think. You will have to find an alternate source.
Since its installed on my phone can i extract the apk? I would be happy to upload somewhere.

Most custom roms have the ability to deny apps permissions. If you don't have the option on your current rom then try out:

Have you tried clearing data/uninstalling updates for the play store under 'manage applications'?
Not sure if this will fix it. I've read in other places that flashing a different version of the market and letting it update again will fix the problem.

Widgets
How about some of your favorite widgets? I have room on my homescreens and nothing comes to mind on what to fill it with!
UCCW-My new favorite Widget!
Root Explorer-I really prefer the interface to ES. Enough, I was willing to pay for it.
Camera360 Ultimate- Best camera app IMO.
Docs To Go-Best pdf/doc viewer I have found.
Dropbox-If you haven't gotten a Dropbox account yet, you need to click HERE.
Google Voice-Been using this since Beta for VM. Love it.
Google Music-As soon as I could, I jumped on this bandwagon.
Jump Desktop- awesome and easy remote desktop access.
Zumocast-Because Jump doesn't allow the same kind of file transfer (had to get a hacked version to work with DInc2).
MD5 Checker-Self explanitory if you're rooted
PdaNet-Wired and Wireless Tether in one app.
The Chive-Keep Calm and Chive On!
GotYa! Face Trap-If I lost my phone or it was stolen, I would be very glad to have this app on there.
XDA Premium of course.

What browsers do you guys use? I've been using Maxthon for a while but used to use Dolphin
goo.im - to keep on top of new ROM/gapps/kernel etc.
picFolio - ideal to transfer photos to your picasa online.
Notification Toggle - allows quick access to frequently used apps (shortcuts) from the notification dropdown.
taptu - if you're into news - very configurable.
Appy Geek - news for geeks.

Limited Time Offer popup - which app do I disable?

I'm getting a bunch of popups offering a "limited time" app with a click to take you to the app store. Anyone know which app is generating this one so that I can hopefully disable it or turn the option off or something?
(missing my ad blocking features of the rooted Note 3!)
I've noticed that too. I thought it might be ES File Explorer. Are you using that app?

I sure do. Checking that app now for any possible settings to change, thanks!
Edit - you might be right. Found this on a review: Intrusive Ads This *used* to be a great app. I've used it off and on for almost 5 years. Maybe 4? The ads were manageable. Now I get pop-up ads when I'm using completely different ads prompting me to install apps. When I hit the 'x' to close the ad, it still tries to open the Google Play store.
If I can't stop them, or upgrade to an Ad free version, I'm uninstalling. Which is a shame, I've also used this app for years. Anyone know a good ad-free replacement? (looks like they do have a paid ad free version)
I've recently been trying Solid Explorer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.solidexplorer2&hl=en), which generally comes highly recommended. I haven't used it a lot yet, but I like it a lot so far, it has a clean ui, is quick and simple to use.
Default font sizes are a little large for my liking, but you can "zoom" out on file lists. I'd prefer if you could zoom even more, but there seem to be a lot of options that I haven't really tried yet, so you probably can.

A few years ago I heard about a way for the YouTube app to function without the Google Play Services. Is this still possible? I want to go completely without GApps, etc.
So far my plan(s) for application replacements are as follows:
1. Google Maps -> HERE WeGo
2. Google Drive -> Dropbox
3. Google PlayStore -> Use raw APKs downloaded from the internet + Aptoide + F-Droid
4. Google Calendar -> Etar or DigiCal
5. Google Photos -> QuickPic
6. SMS -> Signal
Anything I'm missing?
With that being said- Is there really any need for me to download/flash any GApps, whatsoever?
What are the benefits on going without gapps?

Better buy an iPhone then no ?
I mean even if you completely remove all Google apps, you pay a small percentage of the phone price to Google, then you're using AOSP but still coded by Google. Then by watching YouTube you're completely in the Google system too, and watching ads gives them money too.
So you want to do this the hard way ? Buy an iPhone, use Bing, stop watching YouTube.
There's no point just breaking android by removing Google services and play store...

I just edited my message to give you some advices on some apps, but there's also a debate over buying an Android and in the same time do not want to support Google...
Do whatever you feel
Some apps are really broken when you don't have Play Services. Except crashes and missing features.
Also if you watch YouTube in browser (I suppose you won't use chrome then) you'll be limited to 480p.

I'm aware that some apps will not function correctly. I can work around that. I'm not concerned about that.
As far as the YouTube app hack is concerned, it is not a part of a browser. It is a hacked version of the YouTube app. Completely different, and is fully functional.
I have several years of experience developing/modding android, and I'm sure I will do just fine without GApps.
I am simply here asking about the old YouTube app hack method, and seeing if I am forgetting any baser level GApp.
Thanks so much for your... help...
I use iYTBP for my YouTube app as it features a black design, no ads and background listening. Not sure if it will work without Play Services but you can still try it.
Your welcome for my ...help...
Less condescension can work too.
You can use microG to spoof the Google services (at least in YouTube's case) and use iYTBP (google it, read the xda post and download from their website). Otherwise you could try NewPipe.
You don't need another SMS app, the phone comes with one from OnePlus by default.
It also has a gallery application from OnePlus, so you should avoid QuickPic (as it is pretty much adware).
You could also try to look for a HydrogenOS image on the chinese OnePlus website, but I'm not sure if any have been posted. That way you won't even need to get rid of the Google apps, as there are none.

Edit: Thanks @ethical_haquer and @MJPollard ! I think it might be best that I also start a list of mentioned apps, linked...
Edit#2: To clarify some things
1. Yes, I really mean first 5 after a fresh install - imagine you just finished flashing and you have to leave now. You have no time for downloading the many-gigabyte-maps of Europe, North America and Asia, just the most important first 5 to get you started.
2. No stuff that is google playstore only - imagine you have a new good 32 character password like Z5fcTcSp(5<q0RiZAv",-9~?j/X9C9LZ since yday and haven't memorized it yet.
3. If you want to have something added, see points 1 and 2 again and then drop not just the name but ideally also a link (I know some apps but surely not all of them).

Yes, LOS own backup is just laughable, so my search ended up with Neo Backup. Had mixed results with restoring my data (but took this opportunity to start fresh, apps worked ok). Did you compare some backups or how did you end up with Swift? I can't recall seeing it before...

Various threads talking about the deficiencies of former stalwart Titanium Backup (an app that's becoming more and more useless as it has failed to keep up with advances in Android such as split APKs) had people recommending Swift Backup highly, so I tried it, liked it, kept it, and paid for it (as I always do with apps I find useful). I've never used Neo Backup, but I might download it and give it a spin.
I probably install Magisk, Droid-ify, AccA, Battery Guru, and Device Info HW as the first five.
Then randomly K-9, Aurora store, app manager, telegram, orbot, DNS66, VLC, Material Files, MicroG...

Added.
Any specific reason you talk about Lineage OS?
I don't use custom ROMs. But here are my 1st five:
01. Netguard
02. Nova Launcher
03. SAI
04. Shelter
05. File Manager+
Next 5:
06. SSH Server
07. Shortcut Maker
08. Search Widget
09. Notification Shortcuts
10. AppLock

Well, LOS is the thread's home, isn't it?
Valid point, though - the thing is that LOS comes pretty bare bone and it is always a bit of a hassle to get started. Hence I also don't want listing apps that are only on Google PlayStore because they force you into an account.
I will add those "free" ones, of course. (just gimme a sec)
Here are some of my must-haves I didn't already see mentioned:
NewPipe
Retro Text Editor
Fennec (F-Droid)
Antennapod
Haiaaa! So many replies today
I hope I found your right ones (as for links)...

Was about to add it but NewPipe and AntennaPod are of the first 5 things you install on a fresh system? (say yes and I add them)

How do you like Shelter? I needed an open-source app that could isolate apps and tried installing Shelter but couldn't get it to work because of Knox.

Also, how does NetGuard compare to AdAway?

NetGuard watches and blocks traffic by your choice (per app, port or address), AdAway relies on precompiled lists of ad-servers and trackers and other scum.

Shelter enabled the Work Profile just fine on my S22U. No problems with Knox. My device is fully stock. Everything runs fine on the Work Profile.

Netguard doesn't require root. But when you use a real VPN, you'll have to disable Netguard. This isn't required with Adaway AfWall+.
Adaway AfWall+ is definitely better if device is rooted. I particularly like the Multiple Profiles feature which Netguard lacks.
EDIT: I confused Adaway with AFWall+. Sorry.
Netguard blocks apps from connecting to the internet, which is much better than Adaway which only blocks the ad servers. Adaway is not great from privacy perspective, relatively speaking.

Thanks! I beleive the reason Shelter wouldn't work on my phone was because I had previously installed and rooted a custom ROM, and then went back to stock un-rooted. Once I realized it wouldn't work (even the workarounds didn't) I decided to root it anyways.
I was moving/copying to another phone and oh!, it seems I have to actually add another app: Neo Backup.
It's not only on fdroid alright but there is always also an installer in the backup itself, very smart move for lazy people like me and thus it gets moved up in my list very quickly
