Question Should I install custom rom on my new phone? - Xiaomi Poco F3 / Xiaomi Mi 11X / Redmi K40

how much difference does it make if I install custom. I have pretty good experience so far with miui and I like it because it have many features and customisations. Which custom rom would you recommend me to install.

If you like Stock MIUI, you'll like the Xiaomi.eu Custom ROMs. They provide the latest MIUI straight from the China ROMs (they always get updates first) + Improvements + it's debloated. Xiaomi.eu also provides Weekly ROMs (Beta builds), with updates every week.

Let's do it. I just requested the manufacturer to unlock my bootloader.
@dreamytom so is it true about the 168 hours myth? I have already broken the queue 4 times.

You do have to wait 1 Week to unlock the bootloader after the request ^^

I'd totally recommend flashing a custom, when I flashed arrow os I noticed how it was way better than miui on an overall level.

Yeah, I think most developers are Indians now, but most of design are not far different. In my experience, very bad support too.

And it sucks because theres no timer you can check, too many misleading guides and tutorials in some Indian websites, even the Mi forum they don't mention about it. I don't see the reason to keep it as a secret, but moderators don't seem to care.

Can use mi unlock tool to attempt to unlock, it will show the countdown timer there

No, I think you misunderstand.
Firstly, you have to request a Bootloader Unlock using Mi Unlock. It'll tell you the countdown (which will be 6 days and 23 hours).

I have requested it says I havee to wait for a total of 168 hours, right? It says I better not press it again or it will reset to default 168 hours. It won't tell you "You have remaining 24 hours to go" the next time you press unlock.

No, it won't reset, don't listen to such people.
Back when I unlocked mine I checked a few times during the countdown, and it would say "Error: X hours remaining" or something like that. So I think it really does show the countdown. ^^

Well, you can't blame them as their translation from Chinese is indeed rather confusing. Anyway, I got mine reset because I had itchy hands to play around with it and something went wrong so I had to hard reset it, I think if you logout from the device then it will reset, right?

If you like miui then stick with it why go through the hassle of installing another rom, install xiaomieu its better than stock miui. If you really want to try custom roms, i recommend try evolutionX.

HAHAHA, I actually dont even felt like doing the 168 hours anymore, probably keeping it locked in case I don't get stuck trying to use for official procedures. But man, I must admit XiaoMi devs are such dirty bastards, I mean they do not have any sort of tidyness. Do you know where they keep the themes? Where should i place the .mtz theme file I downloaded? I hope it does not require me to unpack it and insert to each folder respectively.

I actually didn't literally touch it, I just accidentally screw up by uninstalling some apps with weird names (first time XiaoMi user) It is shocking when I compared to XiaoMi with 400 preinstalled apps total and my HUAWEI only had just a little over 200. Now I'm trying to look around finding where got answers to MIUI theming mechanism. I dont know where they place it its just invnisible.

what about modaco-superboot.zip? doest it unlock the bootloader of Lenovo p2?
Thank you,,
^Better unlock via the option within the phone's settings. Nobody can tell you if the superboot.zip will work or not. Mine is only 5 days from the life of freedom.

I stumbled on this http://www.unlock-bootloaders.tech/2016/12/lenovo-p2-8319.html but it might well be a fake since they say "I rewrite this tutorial from forum.xda-developers.com" and I can't find anything here and the file to download is behind a "complete offer" wall...Now it seems that modaco-superboot.zip file might be "generic" so the one on XDA https://www.google.fr/url?sa=t&rct=...ui6ckfV3A&sig2=0oDFAOzdaw9JZwAMyRmKJA&cad=rja might work ?
Sorry don't have the P2 yet to try !
After giving it some thought it must be a fake !
It's really annoying that Lenovo have this 14 day rule, can't really see the purpose ? They don't have it on the K6 for instance.
My waiting time ended yesterday. However I don't see much reason to root or do custom ROM's really. The camera is bad as it is and stock is pretty Vanilla. Theming would be the main reason for me. But won't go through a reset for that at the moment.
How did the process work ? You clicked on OEM unlocking in the developer settings and just had to wait 14 days or did they send you an activation code by email ?
As for rooting, just for AdAway I'd say it's worth it !

The waiting period is over I have not done anyting after that so I don't know the process. We'll see maybe I'll unlock it soon. The camera app itself is so bad I won't miss it. It's a pain taking great photos with the stock camera app it's so sensitive to changes in light.
So it's just an arbitrary waiting period, odd!
The camera app on the K6 is not bad, in fact the panorama feature is really good. I'll check the exposure lock options, or lack of.

You can control the net traffic with local VPNs like Netguard. Don't see a reason for unlocking only because of Ad removal.
By the way the 14 days waiting period exists because of security reason. "Bad guys" can not buy the phone, unlock it, install "bad software" and sell it to honest customers within an hour. They have to wait 14 days and need a lot of SIM-cards. My old Huwai Mate 2 had the same 14 day lock.

Thanks DNS66 looks a lot like AdAway but in chrome I get a frame for the blocked ad, with AdAway the area is just "removed", maybe there's a setting I'm not seeing ?

mi camera

I used my friend phone(Mi A2),opened camera and found that he has many options in manual mode and 2 for my Lite, so why XIAOMI did that and is our phone doesn't support these options?!
A2 camera hardware is waaaay better. So is the app that comes with it. If you want the same app your friend has, you have to install Magisk and download a module called Xiaomi Mi A2 camera. I guess you'll have to download the camera2API enabler, too.
I have it. However, it doesn't show the "lens" option. But everything else, is there.

It's pretty easy and straight forward if you follow the steps carefully. You just have to read it carefully, more than one time, and see if you understand every single step you have to do. If you don't, ask before starting. Pay special attention to the numbers (versions and so). Then, once you have all you need and you understand it all, you can go for it. If not, and you don't have any experience tampering with android phones, stay clar until you can be without a phone for a couple days. In my experience, nothing really bad ever happens. But true is that your phone might be useles for a couple days if you mess up in one important step (unlikely). But there is always a solution. Just gotta ask and do some digging and you'll sort it out.

Few questions about miui 12 for Whyred

Redmi note 5 pro AI miui 12
Hi, I have a few questions about miui 12 RN5 pro AI
This is my only device, so I can't flash the xiaomi.eu and test it.
1. The android still version 9 Pie in miui 12, so does it come with privacy protection ?
2. Does it include the features Virtual ID in privacy protection ?
3. If xiaomi global / china already reach the final rom version and no support anymore, does that mean xiaomi.eu will stop updating the rom too ?
Tbh, I just want the privacy protection features, it looks awesome :good:
We can give access to app permission only while using the app, and disable them to use the permission in background is great.
I just want to give online banking to use permission all the time, and other application only while I am using it
Yes it does come with privacy protection
Yes Eu roms will be stopped after Xiaomi stop releases for whyred (as Eu builds are based on China stable/weekly

Yeah i have tried Los, but I wasn't impressed with it.
The privacy protection is much improved and implementation is also good.
I was fooled by this as I was using the rom and whenever i tried to register on Banking apps "No sim card card error was popping", after searching on xda i found that this privacy feature blocks imei and sim card acesss to ? apps and u have to manually change it.

Right now I am more focusing to privacy because I get hacked a few times before, well at least I learnt a lot after getting hacked :highfive:
Lineageos trust only can allow, deny and ask everytime
Meanwhile privacy protection in miui can allow, deny, ask everytime, or only use permission while in-app, that's huge + already.
Can't wait for the miui 12 on whyred global. I hate to changing rom again because it breaks a lot of my apps, most of them crashed, stopped after restored.
The worst is one of my banking apps can't backed up, and the bank is not available in my town, I need to use hard token and get it fixed when I travel again :crying:

Well this is gonna be a long story, but the most important thing is never use weak password.
1. Check at https://haveibeenpwned.com , see which one of ur email already got breached in the site, if u got breached, and use the same password for all account, u are dead :good: , that's why I am using password manager and generated unique long, strong, mix password for every account, if one of account breached, the rest will be fine. Bitwarden is the best to go :fingers-crossed: and I am gonna using keepass for now, just search a lot on internet which password manager u want and comparison, bitwarden and keepass just my own preference and experience :good:
2. When you search on the internet, what's the best antivirus for mobile, most people said android don't need antivirus, yeah that's true if you are using app from play store only :silly: , what if u are like me use modded whatsapp, instagram, etc ? First, download from trusted source only such as mobilism, and from truster user only, not some dude that signup today, and u use his mod apk, u are dead too  , and I don't said u should use antivirus either, but just use the default miui antivirus, at least it scan every apps after installing, then if u really want to use modded facebook, whatsapp, instagram like that, make sure to use 2FA on the account :highfive:
From here on out is the extra tips I suggest.
3. The reason I ask for privacy question here is to prevent some apps using my permission in background, and make sure every apps u installed got the permission it needed only, u don't want a flashlight apps request permission for contact, sms, gps, and u didn't read, and just press ok while installed, u dead once more again
4. If you really like to use custom rom, make sure to scan with virustotal on every zip u downloaded, u don't want any malware, keylogger attached, I realized many custom rom appeared and some tech wannabe in youtube just recommend this and that saying this rom is the best, etc. You never know if one of them got malware, keylogger, etc. The most suspicious one I have right now is mi globe, it offer a lot of customization based on user preference and based on xiaomi.eu but there's no much mention about it, and they don't allow comment on their site, and no community. It kinda make me curious, why such great rom don't have reviews ?
5. Check this https://www.privacytools.io for a lot of privacy protection, their site includes a lot of thing, adblock, etc, so bad guys don't store and sell your data. And of course more secure :fingers-crossed:

is whyred still in MIUI 12 BETA program?
2020-06-23, whyred is still on the MIUI-12-xda-release-list of devices that MIUI 12 is being tested for.
The next update, 2020-07-01 whyred disappeared from that list.
What am I missing here? Are those xiaomi.eu-ROMs only? Has anyone information regarding that? I would love to see MIUI 12 for this phone, miui has improved in every update and the new features look great. Somewhere was mentioned that the gfx will mostly be turned off for this device but the dropdown menu looks better than thatvon an iPhone

There's no official release about miui 12 yet for whyred, probably 1-3 months for global stable release.
And yes, they are probably from xiaomi.eu
Just check where you got the rom, as far I know there's many of them.
Revos, mi globe, mi room, xiaomi.eu, all of them got whyred miui 12
Device reached EOL status (no beta anymore), so they will continue to release only stable roms (every few months).
I'm not sure that there will be miui 13 for this device.

Unfortunately, I do not understand what you meant.
How can you be sure there will be an official update for whyred anyway ?
I interpret the disappearance of whyred from the beta/stable ROMs list that xiaomi just stopped to develop it any further. Why else would they stop testing it? There is a list of reported bugs but no releases that have fixed those.
There are 29 ROMs in development in the main MIUI12-beta/stable-thread and since 2020-06-23 nothing happened in regards to whyred. I know the rule is to not ask any questions about expected release dates but I just wanted to ask more basically:
what does EOL imply? will that be the last MIUI update for it? how reliable is your source regarding a MIUI12 release for whyred at all? I saw the list of devices that should get the MIUI12-update but they stopped to develop it for the Redmi Note 6 Pro, too, despite it being listed in the initial presentation. (reason was brick-rate was too high iirc)
The funniest thing about MIUI update is the option to "get updates sooner" (using native language-own translation). It has never worked and in case you are right in regards to further updates, it will never work.
How did one apply for beta testing of official Xiaomi ROMs ?
If my whyred-display continues to deteriorate I will need to buy a new phone anyway. One cannot read it in clear daylight if the sun burns as it does in Europe at the moment, bleeding from four or five point on the side gets worse and the ghosting with the display gets worse too.
I still like the phone as it served my well over the last two years and still can provide me with every tool I need (ok, the camera is a good point in favor of a new phone- was hoping for the POCO F2 zoom in case POCO can get their hands on the K30pro zoom ed. and rebrand it.)

EOL means End Of Life. Whyred was released back in February 2018 and it was supported till 20th of June of 2020 (I think it's Enough support).
Stable version will be available soon as it is first released for Chinese users then it is made globally.

Xiaomi bootloader - instant unlock

Hi everyone,
I'm waiting for my phone to arrive, hopefully it'll be here in the next few days. I came across this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrclBFu3JyE that claims to be able to unlock the bootloader without the wait times. Does anyone know if this is legit? I can't test it until I get my device.
It'd be super handy if it works as the 7 day wait sounds unnecessary and painful.
If anyone can try it let us know how it goes.
ps. on a side note, how annoying is it that 90+% of the youtube videos on this device have English titles but the videos themselves are in other languages..?

Hi everyone,
I'm waiting for my phone to arrive, hopefully it'll be here in the next few days. I came across this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrclBFu3JyE that claims to be able to unlock the bootloader without the wait times. Does anyone know if this is legit? I can't test it until I get my device.

Just to follow up on this. I just received my phone yesterday and I tried this and it didn't work for me. It looks like I'm going to have to wait the 7 days...

Yeah, it didn't work for me either. Hey, can you play an HDR video on Youtube or Netflix and see if there is a yellow tint?

Don't believe those videos its 99% of the time a scam/virus etc.
Just get the phone, set it up, bind your mi account under Dev settings - bootloader unlock and then wait 7 days (pretty sure it was 14 for some of my devices). Necessary evil with Xiaomi (trying to slow down resellers who flash global firmware etc). While you wait, don't install too many apps etc coz unlocking wipes the device
Don't be tempted with hacks and stuff.

I tried without factory resetting the phone and it didnt work for me, did you do the factory reset and new account stuff as said in video?
I tried to do this today and it also does not work.
I have to wait around 168 hours but does that mean my phone has to be switched on for that long or can I use it daily and switch it off?
Thanks

Question Block 13 update?

I just got notified that my pixel 6 pro will update to A13 in two days, and there seems to be nothing I can do about it.
Does anyone know how to block it and stop any future updates? I've already got 'automatic updates' turned off, but that isn't stopping it.
What do I need to freeze, or what command line do i need to run, to clean this up and stop updates, especially A13?
I assume if your phone rooted, automatically updating will fail
It doesn't, and I lose root, that's what I thought last security update— which is why i'm concerned

Yes tap build 7 times for Developer Settings and disable automatic updatea
You could unlock the bootloader (which would require a device wipe) and then reinstall your current build of Android manually. That would be one of the only ways to officially disable automatic updates as well as update notifications.
I don't think that there's any way you'll be able to permanently avoid it. At least one other person who was rooted on Android 12 got the OTA to 13 even though they had automatic updates already disabled and it actually installed successfully - they lost root until they manually re-rooted it, but it was a surprise it updated successfully via OTA.
You may be able to delay it some buy factory resetting and some other things, but it's a big "maybe", and ultimately I don't think there's any way for you to avoid it.

I "think" I've seen 3 instances of where someone was rooted but successfully completed the OTA, although 2 may have been from the same person. Maybe it was even the same person mentioning it 3 times, lol. Not really sure.
Makes me wonder if they removed the pre-OTA block verifications when going from A12 to A13 or just a fluke situation.

I think I've seen more than one person report this too, but wasn't sure, and as I always say, I keep forgetting the old stuff. What was I talking about?

I suspect (but pretty obvious) that they have ways of force-pushing updates through despite the automatic update setting (or it's broken in typical Google fashion), but I think it's the former.
Then I believe they made a command decision that the vulnerability is too bad and that they felt they must force it on everyone. Again, given Google's reputation, this could've easily been an accident as well - "who pushed the red button!?!?!?"
And then the further command decision to push over top of modded, or at least simply rooted, devices as much as possible. I wonder what happens in the case someone has truly modified their software more aggressively at the root level. It wouldn't surprise me if it would've still overridden in those cases.
While, of course, those would be questionable actions for them to take (if these are actually true in the first place), I either partially or mostly agree with them, but just on principle, I can't wholeheartedly agree with them. Somewhere in the 40%-99% range.
If true, hopefully this is a very rare occurrence and not going to be how it is from now on. I will wait patiently to observe how things go.
What's the reason for avoiding the update? A13 is a pretty minor update from A12.1. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they should have called it A12.2.

this exactly I also want to know, is there any reason for not upgrading to A13 when coming from A12?
Only thing I could think of is some apps which might not yet work on A13...but thats about it?!

V4A, at least in my case. I'm not updating until its compatible, or I find a better alternative.

I'm concerned about app compatibility, magisk, and how much control I'll lose.
As it is, even on 12, I can't change anything in /system, it's locked RO. I'm tired of not having control over a phone I paid for that's supposedly 'unlocked', but isn't

Compatibility seems remarkably intact, magisk works as intended, and there is no evidence of any change in what control you have.
