My guess is that this phone isn't that popular. Which is a shame, because I've been using it for a few months now, and it's a pretty decent phone, especially for being under $200. I wish there was more root support from people smarter than I.

ATT and the Desire

There have been many Rumors floating around, (especially the one started from BoyGenius) That ATT will be getting the Desire. My question to the wonderful world of XDA is, can anyone actually confirm this? Also, how many people are on ATT and are super frustrated that they lack good phones. I've been using my Fuze for 2 years now (love it still) but its time for an upgrade. I want Android, and a good android phone, not that crap ATT/Motorola are calling android (backflip).
I've been searching Google, Twitter, tech blogs, etc... Since February I've seen no rumours, so IMO they can be discounted.
At this point I'm betting no.. But someone PLEASE prove me wrong, I want the damn phone too!
I hope it gets to the us...more people that use it, the more support it will get from devs etc

i have heard late may or june possible same time as new iphone release!

My first experience with WP7

Okay, so, when windows phone 7 was new I was the biggest android fanboy out there. I would not give anything else a second glance. I went in the t-mobile store to get my wife a vibrant 4g and she was interested in the HD7, I pushed her away from what I, at the time, thought was rubbish software on even lesser hardware. I looked at it for a few seconds, made a mockery of the fact that there was no ability to change background images, and she got the vibrant4g. Now, I own way to many phones for one person as Craigslist fishing for phones is somewhat a hobby of mine and one day I found a guy who wanted to trade any pair of the same model smartphone for his HD7. I had a pair of NIB behold 2s that someone had given me for 150 dollars so i offered and he accepted. Prior to this I was using daily a vibrant 4g and a mytouch 4g for work and personal lines. I decided to try out wp7, just give it one day and if not, hey, i could sell it for a profit. I went into the arrangement biased and completely pro-android. I was begging for something to hate. I used it for a few hours, purchased one game (need for speed), and set up my Netflix and such. As much as I wanted to hate it, I couldn't. The out of the box experience was better than anything I could ever set up on android. The social integration, even in It's early stages, was remarkable. The UI was fluid which, while it never bothered me when I was a fandroid, has made it impossible for me to have a pleasant experience with android since. Within 2 days I'd placed an order for a dell venue pro, windows phone just wowed me. About 2 weeks later i found another epic deal on Craigslist and got a dell streak for 140 dollars and android, regardless of root, version, under locking, rom, etc was just too slow for me now.
Today, I still have the latest android hardware for development purposes, I have a galaxy S2 in a junk drawer, but windows phone has shown me what a user experience should be.
You have told this story before and I can only see this post a flame bait.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
It is flame bait in my opinion. But hey only an "imbecile" would try to argue an opinion and acknowledge himself to be in possession of the "right opinion".
I have to say though that WP7 did excite me at first both at announcement and during testing, and it still appeals to me now. But I eventually thought about what I usually used my phone for and came to the realization that android would better suit my needs than WP7.
I loaded wp7 on my hd2, and the only reason I took it off was because of the HD2 power button killing the touchscreen and seeing as how that is the only way to wake the HD2 from sleep WP7 had to go. But I agree that wp7 is a great user experience, and as soon as the hardware is there that supports. video calling I'll probably be getting a native wp7 handset. That and a good navigation app or bing navigation like I had on my HD2 with wm6.5. I still like the fact that I can swap sd cards on my android, but I can probably live with that limitation with wp7, after all, millions of iphone users have.
I run andorid but I do love the minimalist style of wp7. It seems fluid and the system font that they use, segoe UI is gorgeous.
I'm still an android fanboy, and I've been getting my fix of windows phone 7 by using Ubermusic or Zplayer
Another website that tries to bring wp7 to android is wp7android.com
It seems to be well developed, but I still have yet to buy some of the apps from the website.
If any of you guys have already purchased something from there, let me know how the apps are running!
What's a good WP7 phone that's out right now that is considered higher end? I'm actually looking to get one for they wifey, she likes the way it looks apparently.
At the moment she is using a HTC Sensation.

The HTC titan is the best out I think, with a 2nd gen snapdragon clocking at 1.5ghz. But it is 4.7" so your lady might be overwhelmed. The HTC radar would be a better bet with its 3.8" screen with the same 2nd gen snapdragon but clocking at 1ghz instead.
Your situation sounds exactly like mine going into trying WP7. Except after using my HD7 I missed everything about Android. WP7 was completely usable and very smooth but just so bloody boring. ZunePass was the only streaming music available and Rhapsody for Android blows the doors off that for cheaper. I use wifi tether, I like voice navigation, I like live wallpapers, I like widgets and customizable icons, I like the app selection of the Market, I like decent battery life, I like one click access to certain areas of my settings, I like the ability to change launchers or ROMs when I need to change something up. I like the window animations and the CRT effect, I like google docs and the ability to choose a browser that looks and functions the way I want it. I could go on... Look guy, WP7 is nice and perfect for people upgrading from a basic phone into the smart phone world. I would sell so many WP7 devices if my store carried them because of all the old people trying to keep up with the times on smart phones that are easy to use and learn on. But, it's just not Android caliber. The only redeeming quality is the kick ass hardware some WP7 phones have.

Understandable statement until the trolling began. The features listed, minus the battery life one which made no sense as wp7 lasts twice as long as android on the same hardware due to the optimization. Calling it not "android caliber" though just seems trollish as while it doesn't have all the customization, it doesn't have all of the shortcomings that entails either.

Trolling is starting the same thread every couple days in an Android dominated forum... I have only used one WP7 device and the battery was worse than any Android I've ever owned. That's just my experience.
Not being Android caliber is not an opinion. Look at the market share. WP7 has all the advantages that Android has in regard to carrier and hardware choice, yet it hadn't scratched the surface or shown the growth potential. You are just calling the kettle black, Mr. Pot.
And to say WP7 is better because it doesn't have the shortcomings Android has since Android has miles more features is like saying prison is better since it doesn't have all the shortcomings freedom has. Enjoy prison, kid.

Actually, it's more like stating that the life of a wealthy shut-in is as enjoyable as that of a poor free man as it's largely a matter of quality.
Windows phone ha# been out one year right about this time. Android was pretty much non-existent after their first year. Give it time, windows came a lot further in their first year than any other OS.
Your "android-caliber" argument has nothing to do with quality. Considering that anything can run android it'd be comical if they weren't number one, especially considering most carriers charge at least 9.99 for a basic flip phone while giving out android phones free with a contract.
I'll gladly give it time. More old people will buy them and they will grow to like 15% of the market. The problem is, while WP7 looks different, there is already a dumb smartphone OS on the market, iOS. WP7 can only hope to compete with them as they are the only other ones pandering to the lowest common denominator. Dumb people return Android devices to me all the time saying it's too complicated and they want an iPhone. In a year I'll see a few of those people returning Androids to get a WP7 device instead because (hopefully) Microsoft will spend a few bucks in marketing.

This is exactly why WM7 will never succeed. People who need that type of phone will always go for the secure and safe bet, one they already know about, the iPhone.
I was hoping MS would recognize what they needed to do to help WM7, but they seem to refuse to.
How many tech-minded people do you think there are? People dont buy more iPhones because they're not available everywhere and to everyone, not because they can't root them. A small number of people dont buy them because the larger screen appeals more to them which is something wp7 can offer. People don't by android for it's quality. They buy it for it's availability. That was made abundantly clear when I went from working for att to working for t-mobile.

iPhone is available on Verizon and AT&T, the combined number of subscribers which completely dwarf all the other carriers. Millions of users are even using them on T-Mobile. The iPhone is available to whoever honestly wants it. A lot people buy Android because everyone carries and because the platform is easy, works well and is popular.
Sent from my LG G2x
Its not AS easy, doesn't work AS well, and isn't AS popular as iOS (despite market share a poll that I dont feel like digging up from my phone showed that a pretty hefty number of people thought that when they bought an HTC phone they were getting HTC OS, same with Samsung and other carriers.) I'd like to see a poll showing how many people who have android actually even know that they're using android. They would know, however if they were using iOS so there's popularity out the window. At&t and Verizon are two of the toughest carriers to get on. When I was 17 and had no credit established ATT and Verizon both expected several-hundred dollar deposits on top of the price of the phone where Alltel, t-mobile, and sprint were more than happy to get me going. I picked T-mobile for the sim slot of course. Buying an iPhone outright to work on any of these carriers is a hefty price to pay, one the general consensus can't afford for a phone so there's that. As far as easy goes, it's the toughest platform to use out of the box hands down.
Well my argument might be invalid in some aspects, but judging from the fact that in my country the OS population here is BBOS and a minority with iOS, and when i show my phone to someone they can tell that it is an android phone, I think that speaks to the popularity, especially considering the fact that I live in a third world/"developing country".
I dont think that invalidates your point at all, though I feel as though, while younger and more adept people know these things, your average user, at least stateside, is at a loss if they're using android. Like I said, when i worked for both att and t-mobile a pretty hefty portion of the clientel would tell me that they didn't know what their OS was or that it was HTC, Samsung, etc. With ios and such the uniformity keeps it clear.
You're makeing one major mistake though Zee, not everyone has trouble getting to grips with Android like you have, if they did it wouldn't have such a large global market share. Try as you might, you can't argue against that with any validity.

I feel bad for this phone....really bad

I hate posting needless threads....and Hate reading them as well, but I have to get this off my chest. Since two months before the release of this phone the number of anticipation threads on EVERY forum I frequent was overwhelming...but I respect that. I love tech and love people who love it.
Since the actual release I have developed a huge amount of disgust for the people who obtain these phones and who help along the thought that a device like the iPhone is a superior device. I am completely blown away by the level of baseless expectation for a PHONE.
Android has always been a "techie" OS, the hardware was forever changing between manufacturers and the people who used them, understood that. I dont know if its due to the flooding of new users, that have not joined XDA to LEARN anything, or if people just dont realize what exactly they have in their hand, but the slamming that Androids own users give only enforces iPhone users beliefs that they have the superior device and help in the decision for new users to go elsewhere for a GOOD phone.
What phone were you using... three years ago? Even the fondest memories of your first android experience cannot compete with the devices we have to choose from now. Lag is a part of Android....we dont experience anything like the first round of android phones. Current devices have come leaps and bounds from where they were, lag now is split second compared to 10-15 we used to get. Once again though, that was something we didnt care about because of EVERY OTHER ADVANTAGE these devices offered. These are all things that set us apart from the users of Blackberries and iphones.
The lack of appreciation for the devices that have come so far puts us right with iPhone fanbois who started whining the second they had a antenna issue.....I am always up for a good debate on hardware...superior phones are great.....the continuous slamming of some of the worlds greatest technology on the other hand....is pathetic. You have never held in your hand two years ago tech that compares with what you have today. To me....this is what I love about Android, most of all its what I RESPECT about it. This is XDA DEVELOPERS....the Devs here put in their time to do things to these devices that cant be done on any other phones....in the end... for you. All I can read is a hundred posts warning Devs not to even get this phone....
Maybe I am way off....I dont know, Maybe what I thought about Android users having such a love for tech and a individualized experience is what made Android the no brainer choice. It has just really became painfully obvious to me that people can now tear up phones with 720p displays talking about image quality, dual core phones with unacceptable lag, and a expectation of performance that no other device they have owned, WAS BETTER than, You may think it was....but it wasn't. What you expect is something you may never see.
the Nexus has always been a Devs device, maybe some shame on Google for making this phone seem like the next iPhone...but its not an iPhone. If bugs and experimental tweaks are not for you...then you got the wrong device, Return it and get a different phone....its OK, nobody who loves this phone is going to be hurt. Android is not for everyone, having said that... it doesnt make Android not as good as the alternatives and the hardware is still stellar whether you agree or not.

I like android
between my HTC Incredible S and my GN I had a iPhone 4s for 12 days
1st 3 days was nice, and then the shine vanished rapidly as I hit its limitations.
after 10 days I wanted to smash it
but on day 12 I managed to swap for GN I have now, much much better
I like having a phone OS that will go "ok, we'll do it your way then"
Not "this is the only way I can do this!"
I think they call what you have, jealousy. Just thinking out loud ha

Has anyone seen John Connor?
This is my Nexus. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Nexus is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Nexus is useless. Without my Nexus, I am useless. I must use my Nexus true. I must use it better than my enemy(Iphone), who is trying to destroy me. I must destroy him before he destroys me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my Nexus and myself are defenders of everything good in this world, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of AOSP. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen.
Most people post flaws not to complain but to make sure their new expensive toy isn't defective outside normal expectations. I think they look for comfort in knowing its normal and it isn't hurting anything. They need to hear, from the experts, our opinions on it. Will it get fixed or should they second guess things?
Some take it too far and cry outrage for attention (mountain out of an anthill).
The world takes all kinds. The Galaxy Nexus is pretty good though. Considering what problems other phones have to deal with.
-Galaxy Nexus
-Asus Transformer
Android is great. The Nexus is great. Being great means being popular. Being popular means dealing with whiners and morons. The iPhone is great in its way and has people that whine about it all day long.
I agree with what you're saying, but in the end it just doesn't bother me anymore. Let the whiners whine. That's what they do best
For better or worse, Android isn't a small, cult culture anymore. Probably for the better... you just have to deal with more idiots now.

Enough said. Great thread in my opinion. This device is great OTB and will grow with more software upgrades and Developers ROMs in the future.
I bought this phone expecting issues so far none except for the usual new os issues do you want the greatest and latest then expect minor issues as far as I am concerned vzw should not have released this phone without a warning this is not a droid device this phone is special and be prepared for issues. It is the best phone I have ever owned.

Everyone complains about new phones, just weather the storm and you'll be rewarded. My brother just got the phone and he loves it.
Btw development on this phone will be insane. The ns4g has pretty good development and it isn't even that popular.

OP. You expect too much from xda. Now that this phone is prime time on Verizon, the amount of nexus owners that know what xda is are a margin of error in the user base numbers. It will endlessly be compared to other off the shelf devices, and rightly so. That's just the way it is, and probably the way it should be. If google had to depend on xda and devs to sell this device they would have to hang it up.
I love the phone. And I also am willing to admit its faults, Android's faults, and wait for the inevitable improvements. Google looked second rate trying to launch this phone compared to an iPhone launch, that's an indisputable fact. I have this device because I don't want an iPhone. I have it because I believe in Android as a platform. I have it because it truly is fantastic device OUT OF THE BOX. I have zero plans to root, unlock the bootloader or flash ROMs.

i work with iphones day in day out..........and if you want a phone they great...........if you want something to enjoy............then you will be bored within days.
look at where the iphone started and where it is now.......pretty much the exact same product, a little more polished, a little quicker but in essence the same..........and the next generation i phone? same old same old with some little gimmick to promote sales.....in what is it 5 years? the iphone exploded on the scene but has then simply grown old....from one generation to the next they are grossly similar......pick any of the recent generation android phones put it in one hand then put the most recent iphone in the other..................
and then ask yourself.............why would anyone buy an iphone?
well if you want to be dictated to, if you want zero control over your phone if you want a 'bland' life then choose the iphone.
If you want entertainment, fun, expansion and freedom...........choose android.
would i take an iphone? yes if someone gave it to me
would i buy an iphone? never
oh and windows phones? i have worked with them.......well i have tried to work with them..........worst case was 100% charge to dead in 57 minutes would i take one of them for free? no chance

So people shouldn't complain about legitimate issues they are having with their expensive new phone so you can have an easier time arguing with iPhone fans in immature flame wars? What a stupid post. This site is not about you or people like you who want to brag and argue about whose phone is best.

1. iPhone fans generally don't come here.
2. The only flaming in this thread so far has come from you.
3. The OP was never directed at people who have legitimate problems with their phones and post here looking for help. It was always about those who have already posted numerous threads whining about things nobody can do anything about, such as "I HATE the Pentile display!" (take it back and get a Rezound then instead of posting whinefest threads that clutter this forum and help no one).
4. The OP was also not trying to instigate a flame war over which phone is best. There's nothing wrong with posting one's personal preference here. The problem comes when someone makes a personal attack, like, say, "What a stupid post. This site is not about you or people like you..."

all i have to say is we're all a bunch of suckers who love phones too much.
seriously... a forum... for phones?...
lol...
The phone is fine. There are some issues, but they all have issues at first. Calm, rational trouble shooting easily fixes issues that are software related. Some have hardware issues etc. Nothing too damning, squeaky wheel.
What i DO see on the net is stupid people that got the phone expecting it to make their vapid life more fulfilling, only to realize it is just a phone. The phone is not borked, the dog**** applications you jammed it full with are. Take a breath a realize this is a new OS release, so your old system utilities may not function properly, and may in fact make your device function poorly.
Go back to teh iphonez.

My adventures with the GS3

I traded an iPhone 4S with a gentleman from Kijiji for his Galaxy S3, around the time when the iPhone 5 was announced. Myself being an Apple fanboy since iPhone came out way back in 2007, and since the original 2G model I had since slaved to buy each model every release up to and including the 4S. Upon 5's announcement and press conference, I was underwhelmed, and decided it was time to jump ship, having in my opinion seen Apple beginning its fall from the top. Enter the Galaxy S3.
First thing I did when I finished my routine battery maintenance (this phone was brand new in a sealed box, and the guy traded me for my almost year old 4S.. what a steal!) was try to remember what my username/password was to XDA to see what cool stuff I could do - having an ancient HTC Touch I knew of the community and how awesome it was. My first, and possibly most difficult step was understanding terminology and what advantages of "Rooting" was. After a few weeks of reading and one exchange to Rogers after I bricked my phone (high five for pretending to be an idiot!), I finally felt comfortable with using Odin and the tools. I had no idea what this "Recovery" was, or what CWM was at the time, so a few stupid questions later I figured out how powerful (read: dangerous to idiots like myself) the recovery system was. After a few accidental wipes and another near-brick incident, I grew confident in using CWM Recovery. Time to start flashing ROMs and having fun!
A lengthy stint with a few of the Android ROMs, notably Intergalatic, BlackJelly, while both awesome ROMs, I eventually found that it was a lot of fluff and stuff I didn't need in a phone. Nothing against the ROM developers, they made/make an excellent product, but for me, I wanted something simple, basic.. hey look! over there! It's TASK650! Wow, what a smooth and stable ROM. While it was a rude awakening entering his threads and seeing such a significant amount of hate towards newbs asking questions already answered 10 times over, and receiving hate messages from members who wont be named for myself asking similar questions, I eventually grew to understand and enjoy the ROM for the majority of the time I've had the device.
A few times I dabbled in Paranoid variations, KANG and non-KANG, and even tested out a few of the other Original ASOP ROM's, but significant bugs unrelated to the development teams themselves had me growing more and more frustrated with the device to the point where I was contemplating switching devices all together, or returning to stock.
Well, this morning, March 26th 2013, I decided to go back. After about 3 hours of work, and over-confidence in my abilities to flash back to stock causing a few repeated steps, I managed to get back to stock, rooted, and debloated. I couldn't be happier at the time being. The device does what I want, the battery life is so far pretty damn good, almost on par with ktoonsez's Kernel settings (but still less).
What was the point of this post?
I'm not entirely sure to be honest. I wanted the community to know the story of a former Apple Fanboy. I also wanted everyone new here know that there are a significant amount of over-talented developers here doing awesome work aimed at their own niche group of people. I believe I personally gave every developer and ROM group a fair shot, and I wanted to thank each and everyone mentioned above and any other members who assisted me in my noobish misadventures. I also wanted to get the non-developers in this wonderful community to understand that it's OK being stock, but it's also OK to flash whatever ROM you want, ask your questions, read your FAQs and use Search - it's there for a reason.
Always good to try different platforms. I have done the android, ios and back to android thing. Been tooling around with my iPhone 4 lately as my son is getting it (20 months old) to play learning games on.
I was actually surprised that it still hauls pretty good arse in apps and games

Why cant we s-off without that app? No Bashing! Just a Question

So its been a while since i had an htc.
The last one i had was so easy to root s-off super cid.
when it wasnt, i always loved the challenge.
If i recall you had to extract a file called mmcblk0p4 and modify it. Or just modify it with a hex editor right on your phone and place it back with a root explorer. actually i still have it in an old folder.
What is the problem here? How did htc fix that exploit? Why cant we figure it out?
Not that i dont appreciate an awesome app that does it for you. But i always loved doing it myself.
Not trying to bash or start a debate over moralities. Just an interesting and informative convo.
where there is a will there is a way!
Well actually I guess because the people who were discovering the exploits actually created sunshine and are distributing methods via this app only.
There's nobody that can use the app to figure out how the actual app does it?
Maybe I am thinking its more simple than it is. I know i sure as hell cant.

It's an old discussion, but if you look up the Sunshine app thread you'll come across the explanation of why they decided to charge and what went into achieving S-OFF. Short answer: it's really hard.
Been about a year since i logged in apparently.

That is the perfect answer. it really hard.
its because some people are lazy and others are greedy thats why.
Honestly paying for an app to just do everything takes the fun out of it. Im not a coder or anything but most of what i have learned is from flashing phones and modding video games lol. Just dont have quite enough of an obsessive personality to be a full on mr robot.
I can see making a payed version that does the work for you and takes away the risk of bricking your phone. for the people who just want want want.
This im sure would make more than enough to cover costs. especially if the dev was in india or something.
Used phones with cracked screens or broken headphone jacks are a dime a dozen.
Or how about someone just reverse engineer the sunshine app. Or FIND AN EXPLOIT. and release it to the forums.
FAIR GAME right?
This team spent 100s of dollars and 100s accumulative hours to exploit something that costs 100's of millions of dollars and who knows how many hours to create and distribute.
The development thread seems so commercial now. Wouldn't be surprised if most of them were making money data mining selling info to advertisers.
Isnt that where the real money is these days.
I cant pay for it for the same reason i cant pay money for the better gun in a video game. Just pay to win. doesn't feel the same.
Also android is open source and free.
It blows my mind that only this one group of people can figure out how to do this.
Seems like the fact that there is money to be made would encourage more guy fawkes' to create some friendly compotish.
Plus if more "exploiters" could start from there then eventually it could end up so much more refined. Just like everything else on these forums.
Anyways sunshine is free and along with water gives life to the entire planet. I think they got the name wrong.
walmart mod group. buy out all other "developers" (hackers) and charge the people that keep this whole thing going.
I can appreciate and even envy the business sense and intelligence it takes to do what they do. cant say if i was in their shoes i wouldnt do everything i could to monetize it. But its just sad to the the community go down the toilet. This forum used to be so much more exciting. it seems like it used to create developers now you just pick a rom and move on. mother ****ing sad face.
You do realize, if it was trivial and cheap to do, the dozens of people who come complain would have done it sometime in the last three years.
We even publish detailed write ups, and source code snippets to parts of sunshine, including vulnerabilities and exploits. We get people 90% of the way there.
Even with use giving away critical parts of the project, people still don't release free versions. Why? because it isn't easy, and it isn't cheap. You are going to ruin a lot of phones along the way, and your work on the "cheap ones" doesn't apply to the new expensive ones, you are starting over from scratch with each generation, often with each firmware release.
We don't sell data to anyone, no ads on our sites or apps, even the numerous free apps like weaksauce and depixel8 have no ads, nor do their associated websites (not counting the thieves that rehost them with ads, thats not us).
We bought out no one, we pay no one to develop for us. We reinvest funds into more phone and equipment, sometimes some booze, and often into charity. Even google called us out for our charity work on their VRP blog.
Good luck on your endeavors, I encourage you to make a free alternative, to invest the money and time we did out of your own pocket. Neither of us are educated in security or computer scienece, we picked it up along the way when trying to hack on phones. No excuses! Anyone complaining should be working on an alternative. Don't expect much donations, or if you put a price on it don't expect much money from it, it isn't there.

Sunshine has been about since the HTC One M7 days, I paid and used it on my M7 and M8 and about to use it on 2 x M9's, me personally, I really dont have a problem paying the $25 for it to do what it does, personally I think its dead cheap for what these guys did to get around HTCs so called fixes.
Now on to why it even costs in the first place, imagine whilst developing an app to this level, how many phones you had to buy and destroy along the way, this app isnt just for pretty much every HTC made since the M7, of course you are going to want some of it back, if you didnt, you'd be bankrupt in 2 days, with every release of firmware or every new phone release, the app needs to be modified and updated, Hell, you pay $200 for Microsoft Windows for the same reasons.

thanks for the response. It would be nice to get a response on the actual q i posted lol. (different thread)
I guess its easier when its trivial.
Its good to hear you guys donate some of it. and that youve release the majority of the code. i guess people are just lazy.
Honestly you dont need s-off. The main reason i would want it is incase i need to go back to stock for warranty reasons. In which case the money would be worth it. still more fun do follow a write and learn about what i am doing in the process.
As far as data mining im talking about some of the more popular roms and apps out there. not just in the htc forum. Just a thought. why wouldn't they.
And the question isn't why its $25. I get that. It is totally worth it. Its so easy to use. I used to spend hours troubleshooting to get my phones s-off'd and running smooth on all the roms. now you can do it in seconds. these days i just pick one that works better than stock and stick with it. seems like stock updates kill the phones now.
Its why hasn't anybody exploited sunshine or made a completely different app that does the same thing. Or even better a write up on how to do it yourself.
To say its expensive on the older phones is a stretch and to say its too hard is eh.
I couldn't do it but you guys did (very quickly). so that means there is some 8 year old that could do it in his sleep.
And to say its out of pocket is a stretch when its a payed service. Most business endeavors or charities require some sort of investment.
And you can make a large chunk of the money back selling a bricked phone for parts. especially if its the latest model.
Why don't you guys release the code for free when you once you pay yourselves back. If more people started out where you left off (much like how you guys started) then the next generation would take no effort. If there were a thousand people testing and communicating and working together then the cost and time would be nothing.
There is nowhere to start anymore. there used to be all kinds of write ups that forced you to learn more about how everything works. then naturally some people figure out what they are actually doing are inspired to improve on it (sunshine for example). but now its just seems so overwhelming. Like nobody is there to help out when you get stuck.
I guess it dragged a little deeper than i wanted. But every time someone asks these questions it turns into insult matches or just the copy pasted comment of i don't think $25 is too much. if you cant afford that then blah blah . then all credibility is lost and people are persuaded to think as the majority of commenters think. Mouthbreathers will be mouthbreathers. But they are the ones that make this consumer based economy function properly.
Again, not trying to bash the people that put their time into this. More so trying to spark thoughts in people's minds who would normally just follow suit. Highlight different perspectives.

Many people have tried to crack sunshine, I'm unaware of anyone being successful. It is actually pretty funny seeing how many hours people put into cracking SunShine, it is an worthless endeavor considering that most of the calculations are done server side, cracking the app doesn't get you anything as it is done server side. They would need to hack our WAN facing server, proxy through it and then hack the "offline" box we do the work on. This would be a felony on many levels. I like to think most people are honest, and don't go committing felony violations of CFAA over the fact that an app isn't free.
As far as a different app, it is hard, it is expensive, and most people with the skillset or drive, are tackling bigger problems.
Far as a writeup, we make plenty of them, where are your technical write ups?

None of this is "very fast", it all has years of research behind it. Research we did, we put the time and money into. Yes even on old phones it is expensive, the software we use (IDA Pro and Jeb) alone are $1000s a year in licensing fees. Considering each person needs a license, its very costly. And yes, we are not thieves, we actually have licenses in our names. Many models we have spent money on, never sell more than a couple licenses. So the more popular models also fund the work done on models that don't make any sales. Sure we could just not add support for oddball models sold in only one country, but what fun is that.

The investment would be the out of pocket part, money to start projects doesnt just magically show up. New HTC u11 is what $600 bucks? One we fried the soc and mmc on? What $50 if we are selling it honestly (cause that thing wont EVER be repaired, and screen is about the only part re-usable)? Plus we run the risk of our debug builds leaking if someone is able to extract memory from the device, no thanks, not reselling a burned phone for $50(or even $300) and risk losing everything we have worked on for the last few years.

We have released plenty of free training material, white papers and example source code for people to start off of. Those resources would be much better than starting off with SunShine source code. As we have said, when SunShine is done, we will open source it. Considering no one does anything with what we do release, I have doubts anyone would do anything with everything we don't release. We were sure we would get 0 sales on Droid Turbo after publishing that write up, we thought someone would have a free exploit written that day. It has been years, nothing so far.

LOL. People don't contribute to most mobile OSS projects, go look at copperhead, look at their commit history. I'm even guilty of it, my contributions besides projects I helped started are minimal (even my commits to AOSP are few).

All of our write ups are still up, and we still publish more each year, I don't know what the heck you are going on about here. Please take the time to look rather than just make such claims.

Again, feel free to use the free resources we have and continue to provide to the community for free to build your own. We DO NOT discourage people from doing so, we actively encourage it by publishing a fair bit of our work for free. I even traveled on my own dime (not sunshine money, not someone else's money, but from my paycheck) without reimbursement to Las Vegas with Tim Strazzere and Caleb Fenton to provide trading FOR FREE. We over filled the maximum occupancy for the room. We were not allowed to take any more people.
In reality, and not to be insulting, it is pretty obvious you didn't properly research all of this.
