General Really happy with this tablet! - Xiaomi Mi Pad 5

Hi all,
Dutch user here, and I wanted to post my findings of the new Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 6gb/128gb.
Hardware is excellent, the screen is gorgeous and 120hz makes using it a real joy.
Tablet is very fast and responds very well.
I mostly got it for reading comics and it works really wel!
Personally, I don't really mind that there is only english language available.
The tablet came with play store pre-installed(the webshop provided this).
Still, I managed to screw something up while debloating and I had to reset the device back to factory defaults
Installing google play store\google services was nog a problem, I could install the APK without issues.
For me it was the first time with Miui, I did not find the interface to be very intuitive and it was difficult to find the options that I wanted.
Also there were some chinese apps, which I found annoying.
I managed to debloat below Miui packages and have used the tablet without any issues after this.

Before debloating I got some issues with ads and apps trying to install some chinese tiktok app.
So far after a week of use I did not have any issues.
As a launcher I decided to user Nova Launcher.
Setting it as a default launcher was a pit tricky because Miui would not let me.
I managed to set the launcher as default from within Nova Launcer.
I hope in the near future custom rom's will become available.
The hardware definitely deserves it!

I am waiting for it to be officially launched in India AND availability of custom ROMs. I just can't tolerate MIUI even though all my Android devices have been Xiaomi so far. OK with a quality LCD instead of OLED. I hope this will save me from buying an iPad (9th gen. whenever it's available ). I am also buying a tablet primarily for reading comics. Secondary purpose fixed-layout documents like PDFs etc for studies for which the iPad with its 4:3 AR is better suited. But iOS is just so infuriatingly limited. And jailbreaking for newer A1x devices is quite doubtful currently if at all.

Set it to the default start up the default is a khó khăn vì Miui không cho phép tôi.

dont even consider buy mi pad 5 over ipad(unless for political reasons as i did)ive been using ipads for 4 years and bought mi pad 5 2 weeks ago.IOS superior in every way(mi pad 5 only have better screen)but android is just garbage.battery drain(15% idle per day),apps closing in background every 10 minutes, gestures are HORRIBLE,also in full screen apps all behave different(some apps have volume change and some not, also need double swipe to open control panel)first thing that mi pad 5 offer you in security center scan is to disable apps in background every 10 minutes in order to save battery, like WTF?why it needs 6gb of ram then?my ipad holds battery idle for 2 months with 5-7 apps IN RAM with 3GB only

Yep. Not buying Mi Pad unless custom ROMs are available. Pretty sure most of these issues if due to software can be fixed. I did try iPad 7th gen. for a few days and despite it's 3GB RAM it performed almost as well as my 6GB Poco F1 running crDroid 7.x. To be fair background tasks don't really run for long in iPad OS. So it's not true multitasking....
One potentially big issue is that I would probably need to buy a lot of apps if I buy an iPad which would bump up the total cost. If iPad 9th gen. had come with 4GB RAM I would have bought it. Now I am considering iPad Air instead.
Lastly iOS is just too limiting. I was thrilled with extensions support coming to Safari (on my Android devices I use Kiwi) but it proved to be underwhelming so far. Not too many extensions and again the interesting ones seem to be paid. For ex. Dark Reader costs $8!.
Thanks for your inputs. Most reviews even the proper ones don't really seem to highlight these issues.

It has problems with killing apps, but I don't have problems with background battery draining. It only went down 1% in 7 hours.

Battery drain is near to nothing on standby. But how anywone managed to use nova launcher? It does not support native android gestures...

It's a problem with Android in general since 11. You'll have to root or use ADB.

I jus quit nova and try to live with original launcher. Gestures have to work

Or just use Nova launcher with edge gestures app and all is well

I am used to Android and have a iPad for 6 Month, the Hardware is good, but iOS is crap. There is no back button -horror

So far I'm happy with this Tablet too.
Only real letdown is the missing fingerprint (they could have easily integrated it in the Power Button)
And MicroSD Expansion should be integrated as well. (I bought the 256GB variant to be on the safe side)
Performance and Batterylife so far seem to be very good. (I do not play Games or anything like that)
There aren't many alternatives on the market. Samsung has better overall features but weak SoC mostly.
Huawei has a lot of features too, good Hardware but the Google "Limitations". Lenovo is known for bad Update-Politics and SoC were also weak in the price range. Apple is too restrictive in their eco-system for me (and 256GB Variant would have cost 200€ more)

Not sure how you use your MiPad but drain for me has been less than 5% a Day. Apps working perfectly fine, nothing closing on its own. Considering iPad-Alternatives they would have been around 550€ for the same Memory (256GB) I paid 350€ for the MiPad 256GB.

Don't go for the 2/16 variant, it doesn't have enough RAM for multitasking on MIUI. I had a Redmi Note 3 Pro with that same config and I had to do a lot of tweaking to keep apps in memory instead of being killed all the time. I now have the 3/32 variant of the Mi Max and the extra 1 GB RAM lets me run a lot more apps and browser tabs at once.
As for the speed difference between the Snapdragon 650 on the 3/32 vs. 652 on the 3/64 and 4/128, I think it's negligible. The 652 has two more A72 cores but those can't run for long without throttling. Battery life could also be slightly better on the cheap model and app load times are very fast already. I use a 64 GB MicroSD card so the smaller internal storage doesn't bother me.
I have MiMax Prime 3gb/64gb and I recommend you to choose this version like me, it's both strong in strengths (snap 652 octacore cpu) and multitasking (3gb ram), screen is also good, better than redmi range, if your budget is good, choose max option version (4gb/128gb)!

The 652 will post higher benchmark scores but the speed difference in the real world is negligible. One more reason to go with the 650 version (Hydrogen) is easier custom ROM development as it shares common components with the Redmi Note 3 Pro. The 652 or Helium version needs more work for custom ROMs.

Nope... 652 needs just cosmetic changes to hydrogen rom... And bring the extra cores online of course... Piece of cake work...
But performance wise you are right. Worth it only if you need the extra storage.

Better off going for mix 2s as it won't cost much more
Its 300$ more, how its not much more??)
And on aliexpres its 200$ more with 0 warranty and 1 month shipping time.
I am asking the question just strictly for the phone/price.

eBay has it cheap for about $500, for the extra 150 its better value.
Mix 2 Is still decent for the price offered.
The guy was talking about the mi mix 2s, not simple.
1. Its 346$ on aliexpres with 0 warranty in Romania.
2. EU has tva+other taxes for this orders, aprox 25%. So it will be for me +90$ =440$.
Add 25% at those 500, or add some other dhl taxes.
The Mi Mix 2 is worth $360. I paid $430 a month ago for mine and think it's easily worth that. The MI Mix 2S wasn't an option for me though because I live in the United States. The only MI Mix 2S that is fully compatible with US carriers is the version with 256GB of storage which costs $700-$800. The Mix 2 was a way better value for me. Since the Mix 2S has the same display and battery as the Mix 2 and only a marginally faster processor paying all that money for a better camera is too much. It would be cool to have so much storage but not something I need. The MI Mix 3 will likely be a better upgrade from the MI Mix 2 because it will presumably have a full AMOLED display.
Finaly a on question answer. Thats what i was thinking, at 360 with warranty and no other costs, its a good deal.
I dont want/have 200$+ more for mi mix 2s.
In Romania you pay at customs 19% vat + 5 customs fee.
So at a 500 mi mix 2s i will have to pay like 100-150$ more when i pick it up + no warranty.

SOT is OK, would expect anywhere between 4-8 hours. Might not even get that depending on your usage.

The camera is noticably better in the Global Developer ROM than in the Global Stable ROM--probably because it includes an early version of the AI feature that will turn up in MIUI 10. I wouldn't buy this phone if you need a great camera but it is pretty good in the current Global Developer ROM.

You don't have to worry about customs charges. If you buy from AliExpress sellers, they will declare a much lower value for the phone like 30-40$, which means you'll pay very little in taxes.

Bluetooth 5.0 are raza mare, wireless-ul la fel.

Mi 8 camera apk for Asus Zenfone 5z

Mi 8 and Asus Zenfone 5z both use same sony 12MP primary IMX363 sensor. DXO mark score of Mi 8 is 99 and Asus Zenfone 5z's 90.
If anyone can able to make Mi 8 camera apk work on Asus Zenfone 5z, Camera quality of Asus Zenfone 5z can be made outstanding.
Sorry for my bad english!
there are differences in lenses, apertures, image stabillization etc. that greatly affect the image quality of different cameras even if they use the same chip. Nevertheless, i do think Xiaomi's image processing is far superior to that of Asus'.
Primary cameras of both asus zenfone 5z and mi 8 use similar aperture of f 1.8 and same sensor size of 1/2.55".
I think mi 8 camera apk can work on asus zenfone 5z for primary camera.
Sory for my bad english ?

Well, aperture is just a hole, they probably have different lenses and different implementation of the sensor. What I'm trying to say that taking the camera app from one phone, and installing it on the other, will not make the other phone (Zenfone), take photos as good as the Mi 8, there is much more to it then just the apk.

You don't seem to get what I'm saying, that's ok, try it and let us know if it works for you
hahaha sir, same sensor doesn't mean same camera...
i hooe u understand what @ferez is saying. use google translator to translate to your language bro
