OTA File Location - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Greetings.
Let's say I accidentally DL'd the OTA from the OEM update screen. Where in my file system might I find the file? I read that it may expire and vanish. It's that true? Kind of afraid to reboot right now. Thanks in advance.
Pixel 2xl, rooted, Magisk, OEM 10, Aug. rev.

Even if the OTA did expire and vanish, and I have never heard that happening, Google makes full OTA images available at https://developers.google.com/android/ota in the Taimen section. As to where they are located, likely in the /data partition, but I have absolutely no clue where exactly they are.
I would simply reboot, as the system has most likely already applied the OTA and simply needs to finish completing the update.

So I had to reboot, now I lost root. Is there an easy way to get it back or do I have to wipe?? Thanks.

Boot - NOT install - TWRP using fastboot on the bootloader screen and flash a copy of Magisk you should have stored on your unit.
If you need detailed instructions we have a rooting guide on the forum that should help. Just make sure not to install TWRP or the unit will end up bootlooping, requiring you to flash the full firmware to fix it.

[MOD]Unlocking G-Slate Bootloader (3.1)

The lack of a proper forum has made it very hard to find much information regarding the LG G-Slate. I am posting this for those who are having trouble finding the very useful information buried within these forums. This is a very significant mod/hack for the G-Slate and I would like to thank ChiefzReloaded for the amazing work he has put into it!
This was taken directly from our G-Slate project page. If you are unfamiliar with "Fastboot" I recommend reading up on it before proceeding.
In no way am I responsible for your device. This process below assumes that you know what you are doing, so if you do not, PLEASE AVOID THIS!
Unlocking the bootloader
Copy bootloader.zip to /sdcard/
Download Clockwork Recovery 5.5.0.2 (Attached Below)
Reset to Fastboot mode and boot Clockwork Recovery 5.5.0.2.
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
Install the bootloader.zip:
Install ZIP from sdcard
Choose ZIP from sdcard
bootloader.zip
Yes - Install update.zip
Let it flash, it will take about 60 seconds, then:
Go Back
Go Back
Reboot System Now
The system will reboot to a "Downloading Now" screen. Let it finish, and it will reboot.
All done!

There's a new OTA update being sent out to G-Slates. Mine downloaded it today, it says:
System SW update to v10p Downloaded and Verified 13.3MB
This important system software update includes security fixes, USB game controller support and a fix for an Android Market download problem.

I have not applied it yet. Given they locked the bootloader last time, I'm very leery about what they're securing in this latest update. It is NOT an ICS update. From discussion in a T-Mobile forum thread, I know it does change the radio amoung other things.
But I have not unlocked my bootloader, I am rooted though. I'm wondering:
If I take this OTA update before unlocking the bootloader, will the unlocking process still work for me?
If I unlock the bootloader and then try to install this OTA update, will the update even work or will it try and re-lock my bootloader after being unlocked? (I know I can hide the fact I'm rooted.)
How could we get the benefits of the OTA update without installing the one provided? I mean, might someone turn it into a flashable zip that could be installed via Clockwork Mod Recovery?
If I have to choose, I'll probably unlock the bootloader without ever trying to install the update. But given my current state I'm trying to weigh the options and have the best of both worlds, the update and an unlocked bootloader .
If someone wants a copy of the OTA for investigation, just let me know how to pull it and I'll do it.
Unlocked the bootloader tonight, using the newer version of CWM from here.
Over on that forum, someone plans to make a safe flashable zip of the OTA. The one that came OTA will relock things if used. You can remove the downloaded OTA file by going to /cache and remove the .zip from there that was downloaded. Since they have a dedicated G-Slate forum, it seems more development for our device is going on there, so that's the forum to check out.
The nag screen will continue, but if you stop "LGESystemService" from autostarting, the nags won't be so frequent, just after reboots. I'm not sure how to totally get rid of the nag messages totally yet. I'm hoping maybe after flashing the safter version once one is made that the nags will go away.

UPDATE.......full OTA .... does not work with TWRP

Hello,
my Pixel XL came from T-Mobile Germany.
I am in TWRP alpha2 and SR4-SuperSU-v2.78-SR4.
My Pixel XL is on NDE63H.
I logged the OTA download process used the link in there and got now the 68MB small OTA.zip.
Can I use TWRP and this small update OTA to update to NDE63U,
or do I need to use the large 850MB OTA file from the google develope site to do so -> marlin-ota-nde63u-56d5b07a.zip?
I think I will loose root by using the large one, but will I loose TWRP as well?
My preference would be to use the small one, but will it work via TWRP and will I loose root as well or will this only update the necessary files?
Any help is highly appreciated.
mancman
I haven't tried it on the pixel, but on my previous Nexus device (N6), the small OTA would fail if the devices was rooted or had any changes to the system partition - that's because the small OTA was an incremental update, and was checking to see if the system partition was modified in any way before applying the OTA.
The full OTA would work - but you would lose the root/TWRP. Reinstalling TWRP is just a fastboot command away, so why is that a big deal?
Hello jj14,
I tried it.
First within TWRP and then by sideload and both failed with the same error.
I first needed to get a newer version of adb, but it failed as said above as well via sideload.
See error message here in the attached picture.
Any hint?
As far as that error, it means the binary update files are missing. That could be because the structure of OTA's changed. Without seeing the OTA I cannot say for sure. I would post that screenshot in the twrp thread and ask @Dees_Troy what he thinks.
Hello Scott,
thanks for your answer.
I wrote Dess a message.
Attached 2 screenshots which show what is in the zip from the OTA file and one for the comparison to a Nexus 10 zip,
you see that the update-binary is missing, so Goggle has changed things here as you postulated.
Thanks,
mancman
I assume you are trying to sideload the full OTA file. If so, what error did you get using the ADB sideload? (yes, you will need the newest version of ADB - download from the Google developers site). TWRP is still very new, so there may still be some bugs to address - Dees is pretty good about quick updates/fixes though.
I may be wrong here but shouldn't you flash back stock recovery before applying stock ota ??

Sideloading OTA vs flashing full factory image

I have a Verizon Pixel XL with unlocked bootloader, TWRP, and root on NHG47K. I have been updating it via sideloading the OTAs since I got the phone. I've seen on the forums that a lot of people flash the full factory image. I wanted to know what the difference was between sideloading the OTA vs flashing the full factory image?
There is not too much difference,
OTA is changing only what has been changed, size varies with 100 MB to 600 MB of more. But if you had some problems with unchanged partitions they may not fixed.
Factory image flashing has bigger size (latest is 1.8 GB), wiping your data by default (manually editing for non wipe is possible), mainly for fresh start even without wiping data.
Thanks for the info. Couple more questions:
1. Does sideloading just the OTA, flip the active slot?
2. Is there a way to check if the April OTA updated the bootloader as well. I'm guessing the May OTA does update the bootloader since applying it has broken TWRP and root for people.

Hello,
1 - OTA will install on the other slot.
2 - International April version has the same bootloader as March and earlier versions. There is an updated bootloader for Verizon, not the one that breaks Root/TWRP by the way. The May OTA does brake Root/TWRP.

Applying the OTA or flashing a full factory image does "break" root and TWRP in the sense that you have to reflash TWRP and apply root again. Apparently the May factory image/OTA is applying a new bootloader which is not allowing the re-application of TWRP and root after flashing. Chainfire made a post detailing that it was due to the new May bootloader detecting an unsigned image, ie TWRP, and then not allowing it to boot.
Here is the link to that post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...signing-boot-images-android-verified-t3600606

First you say you have to reapply TWRP and Root and now you say it won't allow it... You shouldn't reinstall either TWRP or Root on May bootloader for the moment.
If you want those, flash the April bootloader as stated in other threads talking about the issue...

Sorry, I should have clarified that you are only able to apply TWRP and root to images and bootloaders that were released before the May updates.
You are absolutely right in that that I should not be installing TWRP or Root on the May bootloader because it'll result in bootloops.

That's what I assumed you meant (that the new BL was in all May builds), but your working sounded like maybe it was left out of the Verizon OTA build. I'm just waiting patiently for a TWRP/SU build that doesn't need me to mismatch the BL. It wasn't like there was any functional reason to upgrade in May.

Yeah. A few posts above yours @savi0 pointed to a Chainfire posts relating the issue. You can also check the last posts from EX Kernel. flar2 posted a link to the latest security bulletin...

Although I have the Automatic system update option shut off, in the past my Pixel has used cellular data while remaining on the prior version after the update notification appears. I think the phone wasted about 1 GB the last time I didn't take an OTA update. That essentially means I can not take the update and possibly cause the phone to waste cellular data, shut off cellular data to avoid the usage while remaining on the prior version, or take the update. Actually I have seen a fourth option linked below, but that keeps my phone constantly awake and doesn't allow deep sleep, so I never tried the alteration long enough to see if it would avoid cellular data usage if the change was made before the OTA notification.

I have been concerned about the system using data while waiting to update the phone, but I do not see that happening. I have automatic update turned off in dev settings as well as the google play services notification disables so as not to accidental click it. I see the update available if I look at the check for updates area in system, but it just is sitting at the download and install option there. I have checked my data use since the BL issue came about, and there is no data use besides normal.
Mainly I was just noting that not taking an update can potentially result in cellular data usage, in case anyone wasn't aware of the possible issue. The top items in my cellular data usage were the same as the images in the following thread when I avoided taking an OTA update.

Will the factory images (May or after) lacking the "Verizon" designation lock my Bootloader if flashed to a Verizon Pixel XL (That currently has Unlocked BL and TWRP)?
Sorry, but this is getting Hella confusing.
I'm going to update TWRP, then planning on flashing Factory Image 8.1.0 (OPM1.171019.021, Mar 2018) https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/marlin-ota-nhg47q-73c108b9.zip
Do I need to worry about anything flashing this build?
Just trying to make sure I don't screw myself here, as I really NEED an unlocked Bootloader/ROOT... but I'm still running 7.1.1
Wish there was a forum for us with Verizon Pixels and Unlocked BL's...

If OEM unlocking is toggled and your bootloader is unlocked, just assume it is a google version. Flashing a factory image can't lock your bootloader.

Yep.

OTA - You may BRICK your phone if you have a TWRP,etc | OTA will fail if magisk.

OTA - You may BRICK your phone if you have a modified recovery(TWRP,etc) and you try to take an OTA.
OTA will fail if magisk is present.

hello
bumpsi
It is well known since ages, at least since Android 4 where this block oriented OTA was first implemented, that OTA will fail if recovery, boot or system partition is modified. Any root solution modifies at least boot or system and will prevent OTA to run through. Modified recovery should also stop the OTA (do not flash TWRP since long time, so I am not that sure about this on newer Android, at least until Android 6 Lollipop it did).
So: No one could ever successfully take OTA without uninstalling root and twrp if installed. This is valid and well known for nearly all Android devices, not only Motorola. It is known.
Brick on Moto devices is dangerous. It happens if you downgrade your system, but bootloader never is able to get downgraded. So the OTA tries to update the bootloader assuming it is old, but it already is current. This may result in a hard brick where flashing is not possible anymore. You are on the safe side if you do not restore a backup of a system with a previous bootloader, and do not flash older firmware.
So: No one is supposed to brick the Motorola smartphone via OTA if no firmware downgrade ever is done.
Just doing OTA with root will NOT do a greater harm than a failed OTA. There will be some installation log mentioning "there is partition xyz modified, I will not install the OTA". The system will run as before without update. If it doesn't because of some error in the update mechanism, it will suffice to flash the currently installed or some newer firmware to recover the device, there should occur no brick. Root is not the reason for brick in combination with OTA. Older firmware is.
So: What is your reason to bump this wrong worded warning?

Question Steps to root

I have a WW version of ROG Phone 6. I have had it since mid-July.
Previously, I had ROG 2 but it died on me unexpectedly and I switched to Pixel 6, which was very underwhelming. I pre-ordered ROG 6 as soon as it became available.
I have not seen a concise guide to rooting ROG 6. I think it should be the same as ROG 2 but just in case, I read guide to rooting ROG 5.
Are the steps to rooting ROG 6 the same as ROG 5?

Thank you!
I sure hope so. . . I cant find much material online but I'm going to try to just run this tool from asus https://rog.asus.com/phones/rog-phone-6-model/helpdesk_download/ and then flash magisk via recovery.
Sorry extract boot.img move it to phone, patch it with magisk and then run
Code:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
and that should do it. Although you may want/need to flash the official files first by running the flashall_AFT.cmd file.
Found this all on https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...e-6-can-be-used-for-cn-ww-converting.4474383/ and https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-guide-you-should-read.4474241/#post-87255303
It worked for me without even needing to flash the full firmware (you'd have to, to switch versions though) let me know if you need help. the guides I linked might be overkill.
Just
1.) Fully update on phone.
2.) Install apk to unlock bootloader from my first link
3.) reboot to fastboot and run the command I gave above. (after extracting the boot.img from payload.bin and patching it, although the last link includes one prepatched that may work)

Thank you for replying.
I read the guide about "flashall_AFT". I think the guy needed to do that because he was converting CN to WW. So, I think you are right in that the guide might be overkill since my phone is WW.
Thank you for taking time to outline the steps. The steps you outlined seems the same as for ROG 5. Glad to know that ASUS is consistent on this.
ROG 6 is the first phone that I ever pre-ordered. Usually, I buy phones when there are already guides on rooting. So, I am a bit nervous on rooting ROG 6 since there is not dedicated and concise guide yet.

Your good, just proceed as normal, I already got LSPosed, Zygisk+safteynet and all the goodies running. I see why you preordered this thing, its an absolute beast!! I am in love with it.
I wasn't even aware these phones existed but when I saw them and saw ASUS releases bootloader unlock publicly I instantly bought one as in general that's the main thing needed for rooting.
If you need any help It only took me about 15 minutes to root everything without using the guides at all as like you said it was pretty standard process. Like I said I extracted and patched the boot myself but just to potentially save time as I'm almost positive the patched image in the last link will work, and if it does not you can just reflash the one from the OTA.zip.
Good luck! (if you decide to root it will work fine)

I rooted my phone over the weekend. It went well.
Now, I am wondering how to update firmware. I know I need to download the full firmware from ASUS website and then place it in the root directory.
Should I flash back the stock boot.img and then update firmware?
Or, just simply flash the firmware update and then go through the whole extract boot.img from firmware, patch in Magisk, and then flash patched boot.img in fastboot?

You should be done. I just fully updated and then rooted and set up my phone.
The firmware flash would have been to swap over to CN or WW. If you do that then yes you would re-factory reset + re flash stock boot.img. Then afterwards repeat the boot.img patch to obtain root + repeat setting up your safteynetfix + any other magisk modules.

Hi, I am sorry the last answer I gave you was just wrong. I totally forgot when we root we wont get automatic OTA updates. Which for me is a really good thing anyway. But to get the OTA updates we need to download the firmware files from ASUS website. The same place we downloaded the unlock app but its under firmware. Download every WW firmware and put them one by one in order from oldest to newest on the /sdcard and boot up and it will detect an update. I'm pretty sure we cannot just skip to the latest update like we can with custom rom otas so I am going in order.
I left root, and when done updating will again patch the boot.img and flash it over.
Over the weekend I helped a guy root and set up safteynet and if it helps others I might just write up a tutorial.
Cheers!
Hi! Thank you very much for sharing and helping. I have Tencent edition, from CN to WW, but a couple of things don't work properly:
- Android Auto does not communicate with my car (phone detected and bluetooth connected) bit app stops.
- Gboard voice dictation does not work (google assistant yes)
Country is WW. Safetynet passed. Play certified.
..I followed your guide.
I flashed the posted xda raw throuh fastboot and the the Magisk patched .img
When I tried TO apply latest updates (160) the Same message error appeared.
There is spmething strage (or are least I think It strage):
When I start in "fastboot" (black screen with capital text single line) my device isn'r recognized by PC. Then I switch to "recovery" and then to "fastboot" and a menu (several lines) with title "fastbootd" appears and the phone is recognized by PC (fastboot devices). If I choose bootloader the first screen appears.
I tried to reflash the raw but either the phone isn't recognized or a message appears on the cmd window showing "not rog 6" (more or less) and stops. But the phone is recognized everywhere as rog6...
I miss my broken rog2, it was much easier to root
Do you have any idea what's going on? Or when the twrp boot will be released so that I can brutally flash any zip?
i need fastboot driver for win 64
Anyone know if I root my phone following these instructions, will it factory reset or wipe my data partition? Sorry it's been a while since I rooted any phone, and I am excited about going this route
can anyone provide the patched boot image to have root? Tried looking and asking in other areas but no luck. Or is there a way to patch a bot image that contains root already?
