cannot get apps to use mobile data? - Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact Questions & Answers

Hi All
I have an xperia XZ2c that I purchased used, but cannot get the apps to use
data outside of a wireless network.
This is very annoying as it means I cannot use spotify, maps, gmail, etc
over mobile while travelling.
I have tried absolutely everything I can think of, with no success, so now
I have come to the experts - if the XDA crowd can't figure this out, then it
probably cannot be fixed!
Some background:I bought the phone over ebay, and it's originally from
japan and was locked to the docomo network carriers.
I have unlocked the network, and am able to use it to make calls, send messages etc. So the
voice works fine, it's the data that is the problem.
Model: Sony Xperia XZ2c SO-05K
Carrier : Docomo
Build: 52.1.B.0.266
Root status : not rooted
Bootloader unlock allowed = no
Some obvious stuff:
Do I have data? YES
Is mobile data enabled = yes
Did I try roaming = yes
Is airplane mode on = no
The phone info states:
Sim status = NTT Docomo, which is incorrect, and should be vodacom - how do
I change this? Sim is working for voice though.
Another oddity:
I have used adb to disable the bloatware, but when I tried to disable an app called ‘docomo application manager”, it just re-enables itself – whats up with that?
If I cannot get this to work, would a last ditch attempt be to try and get the bootloader unlocked at the cost of more $$$? I would prefer not to, as I have read that it can affect some functionality such as the camera, and quite frankly it looks like quite a complicated process for a noob such as myself.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Having the exact same problem (added the providers APN data, it was empty. bootloader unlocked allowed is no, sim is unlocked). Feels like the phone does not support the needed bands but according to the spec sheet it should.
Anyone else ran into this and managed to solve this problem?

[Q] 4 big questions about various DHD issues

1)
The ARHD thread strongly recommends using:
Radio_12.35d.60.140f_26.06.03.24_M2
Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_SF
I'm currently using:
android.d3xt3r01.tk/cyanogen/ace/radios/ace.26.04.02.17.zip
Is mine the same? I don't know if my current one have suffixes or not.
My HTC DHD's default stock (before changing anything) is 26.03.02.26_M.
Questions:
1. What do the suffixes M, M2, and SF mean?
2. Why so many versions of radio? I understand that radio controls cellular connections, gps, bluetooth, etc... but with each newer "radio" that is released, is it more powerful? more energy saving?
3. I live in Singapore, my provider is Starhub. Are the different radio versions (in terms of phone and data connection) meant to suit different providers? (Hence I should revert to my phone's default stock radio?
4. I often wish Wifi/ Bluetooth/ 3G data connection can be "boosted", even if it is at the expense of battery life. Is it possible here? How to configure? (E.g. I know that for my router, with 3rd party firmware, I can increase the wireless power)
2)
On currentwidget's logged data graph, I realise that my current usage fluctuates alot. Is this normal?
11am-12pm was listening to internet radio and connected to bluetooth headphones.
about 5pm-7pm was listening to mp3s and surfing internet on 3G.
other than that, the phone was in standby/ lock-screen with screen turned off, and wifi/bluetooth/gps/auto-sync all disabled.

"SD Card unexpectedly removed"
I did unmount properly on my PC before changing back to Charge Only mode on my phone.
Sometimes it just suddenly happens when I'm browsing the SD card contents on my phone too.
Is there a fix?
Is there a way to re-mount without opening up the back cover and pushing it out and in again, or restarting my whole phone?
4.)
How can I edit/ access the Middle Name field in my contacts?
Apparently some contacts have middle names automatically formatted, and my phone can read them. But when I go into Edit mode for the contact, there's only First Name and Last Name.

My GNex thinks it's an iPhone (funny)!

So, I was flashing 4.2 onto my yakju GNex (wanted a fresh install rather than doing the OTA update), which all went well. Anyway, I was doing the initial phone setup, and got to the Wi-Fi configuration page. I chose to skip connecting to a network, and was quite surprised to see this message:

I know most of you probably don't know Swedish, but you should be able to see the hilarious mistake. Or is it a mistake? This doesn't happen if the phone is set to English, so maybe the Swedish menu translator has just been having a bit of fun.
But yeah, thought that was pretty funny and worth sharing.

What's it say? I see iPhone but what does it exactly say?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
All I got was "warning! Eventually operators for data traffic can......"
"configuration of iPhone can...."
I don't know Swedish, just sounding out the spelling.
It says:
"WARNING! Any carrier fees for data transfer may apply.
Configuration of the iPhone may require significant network activity."
You get the same message (although not worded exactly the same) if the phone is set to English, but without the "iPhone" in it.
"Any operator charges for data traffic may apply. Configuration of the iPhone may require significant network activity."
I like the text on the accept and decline buttons better. I don't speak Swedish but Google Translate does.

XZ1 on Project Fi Working

I came from a Nexus 5X on Fi and wanted to make it known that I had zero issues running service on my Xperia. As long as you have the app installed and the sim card in everything will work as intended. Fi will claim that the phone cannot be used for service but most likely the phone will only use TMobile if it's unable to truly switch between networks, which is fine. When sending messages in Hangouts it'll note "Sent via Google Voice". Calls over WiFi and cell work well. Couldn't say I've tested out switching between cell and wifi but I would assume Android takes care of that.
One important thing to note as far as I know you will not be able to start Fi service on an Xperia you must have a Google phone or the Moto X4 to activate a Sim card.

So if I understand it right, this is essentially the T-Mobile network (less volte) for Google Fi pricing/plan, correct?

For the most part, plus you get the great functionality of being able to use Hangouts for calling and texting from any device. It's basically Google Voice with T-Mobile cell service. From my experience though where I live I almost exclusively seemed to be using T-Mobile every time I checked when I was on my Nexus. Fi doesn't seem to activate the VoLTE option, nor does it for wifi calling in the Android Dialer. I am on the international version firmware however so that may be part of the issue. Using Hangouts Dialer for calls does work however over both cell and wifi.
Also forgot to mention, all the APNs and everything were already set up when I put my SIM in prior to the first start. Looking around in the mobile networks menu it seems Android and/or Sony's software is capable of switching preferred networks automatically.
so how has ProjectFi bee nworking for you on your xz1 compact?

Question Supplementary services

Hi all,
Some months earlier, I was able to use call forwarding on my airtel SIM in galaxy F62 for voicemail purposes
But now, it just doesn't let me use supplementary services in SIM SLOT 1 like call waiting and forwarding... though Sim Slot 2 is letting me forward the calls...

Can someone please help me troubleshoot the problem I am facing?
PS: I used alliance shield X to open IMS settings once and I am not sure if that was the reason supplementary services not working in Sim 1

May be your shield x broke call supplementary setting. Just backup your device and do a factory reset. If doesn't work the you need to flash system with ODIN

Thanks for the reply, but I inserted my SIM in my mother's phone and the Supplementary services didn't work either..
So I guess the problem lies with SIM only..
Is there some setting or something from where I can just toggle those services on and off ? Or should I contact my telecon operator?

Question Can't switch 5G off since updating to Android 13?

Has anyone else has this option greyed out?
I have the option to choose between 5G,4G,3G,or 2G (Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Preferred Network Type).
Yep they've greyed it out even though my phone was bought simfree (unlocked)

If you scroll down a bit further, don't you have a Preferred Network setting?
Nope just a 'Choose Network' which is also greyed out
I'm at a loss, hopefully, someone else will chime in.
FWIW, mine is a US Model, puchcased from T-Mobile, SIM unlocked (using a T-Mobile SIM Card).

You could always just use the dialer code *#*#4636#*#*
Turns out certain networks have the option disabled, I had the same problem when using an ID Mobile sim but my Vodafone sim was fine. To fix the problem make sure your rooted as I don't know of any other way other than the one I'm going to show.
Use a file manage that can show you root files (I use MiXplorer)
Go to /data/user_de/0/com.android.phone/files
Look for a XML file that starts with "carrier", If you have more than one then you've used more than 1 SIM in the phone, Make sure you've opened the XML file for your SIM.
Look for the line "hide_preferred_network_type_bool" and change it from true to false.
Reboot.
Profit.
Hope it works for you.

I'm with Smarty (owned by Three) which also uses the Three network like idmobile so it looks like Three maybe the cul·prit
I'm on I'd mobile which uses threes network.
Type this *#*#4636#*#* in dialer, it enters a test mode.
Click on phone info which takes you to another screen.
Scroll down and you'll see a slightly gray box that if you click on that and scroll through you'll find LTE only.
Click it and that's it, 4g network only.
Restart phone, job done.
Pretty sure my battery also seems to last longer
