Question Why the supernova when using fingerprint sign-in? - Google Pixel 6 Pro

First time with an in screen finger print scanner. It seems the Pixel 6 turns on at maximum brightness (regardless of the screens brightness) a circle under your finger as you unlock. This is very bright in a dark or dim room, causing my finger to glow bright red, sure I can see bone!
As I understand it the finger print scanner is just a capacitive scanner under the screen, so not something that "sees" justifying the bright light, so why is this happening? Is it just something Google thinks looks cool without giving much thought to it, or does it have a purpose?
I'd really like to get it toned down so it's not so jarring in a dark room when using at night, but see no settings to allow this, is there a way to change it?
Struggling to see how this is any better than a rear fingerprint scanner.

It's not capacitive, lel. How would that work? It's hidden under the display.
It's an optical fingerprint scanner. And optics means it requires light to function.
There are three main systems in smartphones: Capacitative, optical and ultrasonic. Google opted for an optical sensor on the Pixel 6 (pro).
Without light, the system can't work. It requires a combination of light and dark.
A capacitative fingerprint scanner uses an array of tiny capacitor circuits to cllect data. How would you exchange/store electrical charge, if a glass panel is between the scanner and your finger? It's just not possible, from a simple physical conditions standpoint.
It's working as intended.
Besides, it's simply NOT better than a rear fingerprint scanner. The old Pixel rear scanner was beatiful and just worked. In a dream world, the Pixel 6 would have faceunlock AND a rear fingerprint scanner, so we can enjoy unlocking with ease at home and use the fingerprint scanner whenever we wear a mask in public.
But, we are not in an optimal world.

Many thanks, I did Google it after posting and found it was a CCD device so optical, should have done that first! I thought it just worked the same as the rear ones but just placed under the glass. Everyday is a school day, guess I will just have to use a pincode when its dark.
Must say I find the rear scanners much easier and natural to use, I don't see these personally as any improvement.

You're welcome. I agree with you here, I liked the Pixel 2 and 3 scanner at the back, with a case on you just had this "easy" resting and finding place with your finger. It just "moved" naturally into the hole and unlocking was never a problem.
Sadly, Google decided to opt for another solution.
I edited my previous post btw with some more info about scanners, maybe you will find it useful.

I think it's a shame that Google doesn't use the latest technology for its fingerprint sensor. Google developed the Tensor chipset in collaboration with Samsung. Why didn't you just adopt the ultrasound technology for the fingerprint sensor from Samsung? In my opinion, this technology would be a perfect fit for the Pixel 6. Has it probably got too expensive for Google or Samsung doesn't want to share the technology (yet) with others? In any case, it's a shame.

Maybe it had something to do with the supply situation, many parts are only hard to come by.

Pixel 7 next year got to have a reason to upgrade. I can see the return of a rear or ultrasonic in display + face unlock as a feature heavily marketed lol

Google is trying to stay up to date with the cool kids. That optical sensor is a gimmick nobody asked for. It's not nearly as fast or precise as the rear one. But hey, at least it's "cool".

I believe what's supposed to be potentially better about them is that they don't take up as much space in the phone, making more room for other things (like the huge batttery). I could be wrong about that.

It is my theory that they have an agreement with Samsung to not make their phones "too good" (gimp them), in exchange (and money) Samsung provides them some parts. For that matter, Samsung could've just refused to license certain technology to Google. I'm glad at least the storage is UFS 3.1, from Samsung.

I suspected it was more for looks. Trying to make themselves look more mainstream.

Scratches on my laser!

I was applying my tempered glass screen protector and after everything was done, I did a thorough check to realize that my laser sensor has hairline scratches. Will it affect the focus or performance? It's my first LG phone..
Thank you in advance!
My laser appears to have a few tiny scratches as well.
Highly doubt it will hurt anything. My g3 laser was scratched up and it seemed fine.
I was thinking of polishing the plastic and applying a film protector to get it protected. Any idea if a film would affect the focus? Thank you for the reply.

Anyone got preventive measures to prevent laser focus plastic cover from getting scratches further? Mine is quite scratched up and I'm pretty annoyed by it. I believe it won't affect the focusing speed but it's a flagship phone from LG and yet such thing happens..

The laser cover is soft, cheap plastic. Nothing you can do about it. No, it won't affect the focusing unless you put a giant gash in it that will deflect the beam. Same thing was happening on the G3. Just be careful about it.

Polish it with ABS polishing compound, then put a drop of optical hard lacuqer on it. More trouble than it's worth, IMHO.
Although LG brands it as "laser" it's nothing more than a ray of infrared shot and measured after it bounces off obstacles. So unless the emitter/receptor is REALLY weak, there will be likely no effect on the focus.
Double that with the fact that the camera uses both the "laser" and phase detection to focus, if the "laser" fails to provide focus information the phase detection will do (slower).
Think of it that way: Do you care that much about the scratches on your TV's remote infrared emitter?
Don't worry, your "laser" is fine

I don't think you really know what a laser actually is.
The whole point of the laser-assisted autofocus is to project a tightly focused, coherent beam of light shining in a single direction so that it reflects off the photo subject and nothing else. A non-laser IR diode projects light in a "cone" in all directions, which is useless for focusing the camera. It is a laser by all means, otherwise it would not work at all.
Scratching the cover might diffuse the beam slightly but only a major gash will actually impair it to the point of uselessness (since it will scatter the light in many directions).

I know very well what a laser is, thank you very much
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8062/a-closer-look-at-the-g3s-ir-laser-auto-focus-system
A "perfect" laser would be actually counter-productive, for unless you have a sort of "crosshair" on your viewfinder to mark the focusing point, you may very well have your phone focus on the tree behind your beautiful significant other, just because your subject is not in the laser's line of sight.
It is actually necessary for this concept to work that the beam is conic. Here, see this image from LG's own keynote: http://androidspin.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/LG-G3-Laser-Autofocus.png
If it was a super-focus laser, would they represent it as a conic, albeit very narrow, beam?
They don't need a "perfect" laser emitter to work out their concept. Granted, they need a narrow beam to avoid interference and allow an accurate measure of the scene being captured but a perfect laser beam (perfectly coherent, single direction light) would just do more harm than good. This is not used for sniper rifle or whatever, it's used for focusing on a scene.
Scratches will maybe deviate a portion of the beam a little but the majority of it, unless the window is completely buffed, will still serve its purpose. I'm strongly guessing that the way it works is: Send a burst, receive reflectionS (plural because there will be more than one) and apply some algorithm that'll define the most appropriate distance to focus on, based on the collection of durations from the receiver.
So I have a question on this topic. Since its supposed to be infrared, on a remote, you cant see anything being emitted unless you look at the emitters through a camera or something. When I have my camera on my G4 on, I can see a tiny red red light shining. Can anyone else actually see the red light being emitted? Just making sure mine's not defective.

I can see it too. Very much like you can see the IR emitter of your TV remote, except it's more focused here so even more noticable. Your device's fine
More on why we can "see" infrared in certain conditions even though it's out of the visible spectrum: http://phys.org/news/2014-12-human-eye-invisible-infrared.html
You'll notice that the "laser" is pulsing rapidly, which is the required condition to trick the eye into "seeing" the beam.

Samsung should get rid of the Iris Scanner...

Ok, here's the deal. Fingerprints is already enough advanced tech to protect a phone's content.
Why the heck would someone get laser in his face each time he looks into the phone? First thing I did when I had my Note 7 was disabling the Iris Scanner. I didn't even care if it worked properly or not. Fingerprint scanner was fast enough.
And the infrared light into your eye? really? Like you don't hurt your eyes enough with VR or the phone's screen itself all the time... Now you need an Iris Scanner to beam Infrared into your eye?
Someone sign a petition or something so they stop this technology and put, I don't know, maybe a second speaker for stereo sound instead of a completely useless tech that uses space and Processing.
I like the Iris scanner, it's faster and more reliable than the fingerprint scanner, as for it shining anything in your eyes, if you go out in the sun the light radiation from the iris scanner is nothing compared to the sun.
Just disable it and be done with it. It hardly takes and resources. Some people like it some don't it looks like it's here to stay judging by the rumors of S8, if you don't like it get a different device?
its one of the main sell point , so its definitely be staying , also samsung has never have been into sound department , look at the stock music player ,always sucks , lol and dont ask me why .
No......but thanks for bringing it up.
I use the iris scanner quite a lot actually, my work requires the use of gloves, therefore my fingerprints doesnt work. I used pins before, but there is nothing as fast and covenient as the iris scanner.

I have a similar problem with the fingerprint scanner, due to my work I hold and lift a lot of abrasive materials so my fingerprints tend to be really faint, the vast majority of the time the readers just can't get a read on my fingerprint, the advantage of the iris scanner is it worked pretty much no matter what as you are never affecting your eyes in a way that would make them hard to read.
I love the iris scanner. Let's sign a petition to make sure it's in the note 8 and s8

Signed. I love it. More secure and a 2nd line of defence after fingerprint. I use fingerprint to unlock the device and then have the really sensitive stuff - online banking etc - in the secure folder, locked with the iris scanner. It's a perfect setup imho.
I didn't care for the iris scanner. It didn't feel right to my eyes, plus it wasn't consistent enough as opposed to the fingerprints (which seem to work perfectly for me). But that said, I don't mind if it's part of the phone, I will just disable it again like I did previously.
Doesn't anyone understand that with the iris scanner you can unlock your phone easier and in a secure way when your hands are wet/ dirty. You know, because this is a water-resistant phone
Strange how everyone says keep it yet they weren't so fussed before they were even aware of it. Of course get rid of it, it's an intrusion on one's privacy (which is why it is also wise to tape over the front facing camera).
Lose it for sure, free up some space for battery venting.

strange I think that's how innovative works. nobody was really fussing for a fingerprint reader on phones before 2011
IRIS = SIRI
In plain sight, are you blind? SEE what EYE did there?
since i going to return the note7 tommorow when the box arrives, i going to play with it. when you first setup iris. it said "To protect your eyes, keep the screen at least 8" away during iris recognition", "Do not use iris recognition with infants. Doing so may damage their eyesight". This just makes me uncomfortable to use it.
... Or or just disable it on your phone, like you already did and let the people who like it continue using it, which i believe is the majority.
Not every feature is gonna be a hit with everyone, that's why they implement a cool little toggle for them in the features settings.
a extra hardware is better then none , yeah you paid it with hard earn cash , removing the iris scanner is like removing the ir blaster , a feature that some still like .
Iris scanner is just getting started. I don't use it, but it will be another feature that is more prevalent, not less in future phones. As others have said just disable it if you don't like it. I don't lock my phone often, but when I do I use fingerprint as it is very good on the N7. Fingerprint on my N4 didn't work worth a crap, but works great on the Note 7. It is always good to have choices.
I am largely indifferent. Not a deal breaker for me.

I think it is better to remove the heart rate, O2 sensors. Not many people use it. There are already smart watch, fitness band, & ask the wearable devices able to do that.
Bring back the IR blaster, FM radio, and removable battery...

Some initial [email protected] S10+

Spent quite sometime with the S10+, well ..with a live demo unit.
Some personal initial impressions:
- Though secure , ultrasonic fp scanner is slow, slower than the optical scanner on the OnePlus 6T- something that is already slower than a conventional capacitive scanner. Also, once registered, it was a hit or a miss everytime I tried unlocking as I was not able to memorize the suitable spot @ FP scanner when I wasn't careful enough .Samsung is likely to make the experience better with future updates and I hope my muscle memory will improve in future. Also, wet finger and the scanner are against each other- doesn't work
(with a quick OTA [email protected] build no G975FXXU1ASBA, the FP recognition is now improved)
- No notification LED anymore.
- Bixby sucks like before. Now with an addition like Bixby routine that mimics Google assistant routine.
- Slipperly back.(- prism white, don't know about the other vatiants yet). Felt like it slips more than my Note 9 on the same surface.(just felt when I tried alongside the Note9, no accurate testing).
- Since bezels are thinner than ever, it felt like I was blocking the border contents accidentally no matter how I was holding.
- Feels lighter, way lighter than the Note 9 and also shorter, narrower.
- Primary shooter has two zoom modes compared to one in the Note 9.
- Bezel-less and a very premium design overall.
- Bigger battery ,yet smaller form factor. Yet to understand the endurance though.
PS: I see negatives in a gadget fast, way faster than the positives. As such, the +ve points would easily overpower the -ve points on the S10's, especially the +model.

I assume there would be a setting to show on the screen where the sensor is located to guide you, either on the AOD or lock screen. I'm a little upset about the wet finger and scanner not working. I thought that was a perk of having this type of sensor...

Have you dug around in the settings to see if there is a setting to use part of the screen as the "notification LED"? I've heard rumors that the camera bezel is used in place of the notification LED.

Aside from the fp registration process , I was not greeted with any other guidance once the screen was locked.Unfortunately, the demo I spent time on, wasn't showing that in default settings and I did not dig further into the settings to find out. If not there, I assume Retail units will have it.
Again.. it's just that I couldn't find an LED on the status bar. Will update more about how notification is taken care of using AOD(if at all it's different from existing ones and paid special attention to, for notifications) when I play with it again.

This doesn't make sense. Are you sure the device wasn't faulty? Also when your turn on the device the lockscreen has an indicator of where to place your finger to unlock the device on all on the videos I've seen. Something must be wrong with the device you played with.

A lot of the people reviewing the phone said they had the same issues with the FP reader.
I see many YouTubers reviews in regards to the FP reader, I'll wait and test myself.
Same was said with the optical that they are slow and Don't function, now I have tested and owned the Huawei mate 20 pro that was just fine, I did not have the issues YouTubers were crying on about.
I now have the Vivo Nex S and again no issues it unlocks first time, I would put it in the say 98% odd occasion it might be slow or not respond as well. I must be the fortunate one I guess lol
What I am saying is don't buy Into the beeeep, sometimes they are full of beeeep, not saying it will be perfect, but I can say from my optical use I haven't been annoyed with it. It well works 98% of the time.

1. Definitely it was not faulty. I had to pretty much forget the fp scanner when finger was totally wet. When it was slightly wet, it was hit or a miss situation. I tested it with another unit today only to have the same result. Then tested with one more unit - nothing changed.
2. When you register fp, it shows , once the screen goes off ,it doesn't anymore. You will have to wake the screen first , only then the "indicator" shows, not when you directly would want to unlock using the fp from the lockscreen when it's off. Dug further into settings and AOD to look for any possible toggle, found none. With AOD, it indeed showed up notification and stuff but not the fp guide/indication. Toggles like lift to wake and the new "double tap to wake" (new for a samsung without 3rd party launcher) are there .
Going forward, I spoke to a Samsung senior level trainer ( is known to me) (& for God's sake I did not want to talk to customer care execs) who later told me "the phones you have tested are with pre-release software and some are with Retail mode on in them without having the actual Retail software meant for customers. You will see "all that" once it is officially released in the market(i.e. 8 March).
I will have a full retail unit in March 6th for sure. Till then, let's see what more info we get. :good:

AR emoijis are customizable: Skin color, hair, clothes, facial features, name and age. They seem to have idle actions such as dancing. Keep in mind that I didn't try AR in previous phones can't do a direct comparison.
Also, you can create AR emoji masks (where your head is replaced). The camera supports HDR10+ & HEVC (one or the other!).

In terms of looks they're closer to Microsoft's avatars, since they're deformed humans instead of animals or emojis. Facial tracking is still there, so you can blink or whatever. Dunno if it'll gain traction with content creators, but I can see myself using masks.
Just played with a S10 in store and there is an indicator on AOD for where to place your finger for the fingerprint sensor. Dunno what software OPs unit is running but it doesn't seem to be the latest.

Yes I've noticed that too in a YT video. But I did not see that in AOD on, with the units I played with. (attached pic).
Unless tapped on the screen, that area was not visible. That experience is similar to this video: timing at 04.00
Odd

[Q] Why my fingerprint scanner is so awful?

Hi, question: i have a Note 10+ with all updates and updated via adb to Android 10 but my fingerprint scanner is still really awful. I have seen all yt video, seen all tuto on how to set the fingerprint but nothing!
Still awful, especially when finger is a bit wet. Is there a solution or is it better change the phone?
Maybe it is the way you registerd your fingerprints, my fingerprint sensor is accurate all the time
Are you using a screen protector? Mine sucks too. I have a glass one with the thin area in the glad over the sensor and I have used privacy film and it's ehh. It works perfect with nothing on it. Try turning the touch sensitivity up in settings and maybe re-register the print again.

, no, it is not, mine as many others work just fine, the fingerprint sensor for whatever reason doesn't work the same for all, odd, but not a so uncommon issue, and this happens among all brands
I partially blame the size of the sensor as well as the way they guide users through the enrollment process. The standard android fingerprint enrollment process, as i've experienced on my HTC U11 and Razer Phone 2, prompts for more finger edge samples. I actually went through the process on the Note as the software prompts and had mixed results. I then just decided to hit the sensor randomly with some overlap to give it a better overall picture of my finger as opposed to a bunch of samples of the same spot and then a few variants.
If you shine a flashlight at the screen you'll see the sensor size. It is a short rectangle that doesn't seem to cover the area that the fingerprint icon covers. I have an amFilm whitestone-style screen protector and while there is a slight difference, the stock experience was also not that great. I would recommend you try to figure out how you ACTUALLY use the fingerprint unlock. I noticed that while i'm enrolling i'm focusing on pushing with my fingers dead-on, in practice i actually use just the upper right corner of my thumb (if you're looking at the fingernail top-down). When I realized that I trained it with that in mind and it did perform better.
There was mention of the ones in the One Plus devices, which are actually different in that they are optical. Because they light up and read optically they have a more controlled environment than what the ultrasonic sensor on the Samsung phones. I can see someone with a deeper fingerprint patten be able to get better results vs someone with a very faint fingerprint. On oneplus devices though it would just be a different picture, but i'm thinking on an ultrasonic sensor there might not be enough peak and valley information to pass the threshold. Maybe samsung can make the pattern require less data points to match to unlock, but that would also mean it is less secure.
Bottom line is that while the tech has the potential to be more secure than optical under glass, it still has a little ways to go but it is serviceable once you get to it. I don't have big hands so i have to hold the phone in a very specific way to get a good grip on it. Once i figured that out, training the sensor again did yield better results.
I have the same problem. In sorry you haven't received a resolution, especially from Samsung who manufactured the Galaxy Note 10 Plus. I'm believe they were aware that it did not work with many 3rd party cases with protected screen covers. No matter how you register with screen off or on, the reader is intermittent and doesn't work with the cover. I hope you get the resolution as it will solve my issue as well.
The fingerprint registration process seems very glitchy too but after having experienced an awful 40% success rate with waking the phone using my fingerprint I deleted all the stored prints and started again. The secret is in storing decent prints so keep doing this until the phone unlocks with a 90%+ success rate like mine does now.

Fingerprint sensor

Everytime I see videos about the Note 10+ under screen fingerprint sensor, usually YouTube. They quickly go to the sensor, just briefly touch it and their phone unlocks. I have to press screen firmly, hold it there for about 1/2 or a full second, then it unlocks. What am I doing wrong
I see there same results
Hard to say, mine works super fast, but in fact I do not use any type of unlocking security! I never leave my phone unattended, and I have no sensitive content stored in it, so…
Mine works great even with Whitestone screen protector. What I do when registering, I use left thumb, then right. I do this until 1st print is registered and continue the same for 2and 3rd and 4th

I find it to be pretty poor compared to normal fingerprint sensors but does the job for the most part. It was definitely better before I installed a Whitestone screen protector, comparable to the optical unit on the ROG Phone 2.
I find a quick tap does sometimes work but most often I get a message to say press harder or something similar.
Coming from OnePlus 7 Pro..this FP sensor is just horrible...I can't even get it to unlock 50% of time
2 things: you can change the screen sensitivity and that may help register with less pressure or time spent pressing. Also, I would remove the troublesome registered print and register again. Make sure you aren't pressing super hard during registration, and get every angle and position of that finger possible.
Doing this, I've had no issues with using the reader.

I still struggle sometimes with the fingerprint sensor not being always dependable 'at will'. It's a great phone, but this problem is very frustrating to me, too much of a contrast to this phone's all other qualities.
Now in the Winter the problem gets worse, dry air=dry skin, at home I can use some hand moisturizer(it helps), but I don't think that's what the sensor designers hoped for to improve sensor's reliability.
I'm on it since S10 which I returned for the very same reason shortly after purchasing it about a year ago and replaced it with S10e, a phone that was perfect and free from my frustrations. Yet I swapped the S10e for N10+ just to have a bigger screen for reading my ebooks on it. Somehow I convinced myself that the sensor will have totally new hardware. Well, they did improve the software, the sensor in N10 is the same, more accurate in my opinion though, but it still lags behind expectations for a flagship, or rather, as I call it referring to its price: a battleship.
So, my new resolve now is to aim for S11(it all depends on Samsung's generosity with the N10 swap), not much”leaks” around about the S11 specs but I think they have a brand new and bigger, ultrasonic sensor in the works.

I removed my existing fingerprint registrations and did it as you suggested, 4 times slowly without to much pressure.
Now my fingerprint function is working flawlessly without any issues.
