Stock Firmware? - Moto G8 Play Questions & Answers

I need to re-lock the bootloader but it seems I never made (or lost) the backup. Is there a way can download the newest firmware off the internet?

How do I update N4 DE with custom recovery

Hi,
I have Note 4 DE with TWRP, rooted that came with N910VVRU1ANI1. There is newer version of software, N910VVRU1ANJ5, available here
What should I do to update the software on my phone without locking the unlocked bootloader? According to what I read here and there, I must bypass OTA updates that will "convert" my DE to stock locked phone and should use Odin and flash Stock Restore, Kernel, Modem & Recovery; am I missing something or adding something that I do not need? In what order should I flash all these? When do I wipe Dalvik/Cache?
Thanks.
doesnt matter what order just dont flash full or partial firmware or bootloader/recovery. dont know if you need a full wipe or not
i would recommend just flashing this in twrp honestly though

Just flash "stock restore" in odin, it will update everything (except bootloader) you will retain data and be on NJ5. You will then have to reflash TWRP in Odin then reroot via Chainfire auro root or by flashing super SU in TWRP. If you run into problems I would recommend reflashing via Odin, then doing a factory reset via stock recovery then you will have to redo the above. FYI the factory reset in stock recovery will wipe the internal SD so make a backup. If you flash the ROM listed above without updating to NJ5 in Odin first you may get bootloop.

How do you unlock an i747M locked to Fido? [OctOS L 5.1.1]

So I'm planning to switch carriers and I'm wondering how I can unlock my i747M locked to Fido that's running OctOS L 5.1.1. If I have to downgrade, how do I transfer all my current app data and pic's. Also, is it possible to keep the unlock if you were to update you phone to a higher version or install a custom ROM or install the nandroid backup you made before unlocking? Please leave me with some important things to know about while unlocking your phone if possible!
If the phone is running a 4.3 or newer bootloader, you'll have to buy an unlock code.
In order to enter the unlock code, the phone should be running a stock samsung ROM from sammobile.
I suggest creating a nandroid backup with TWRP, copy the backup to your computer, flash the stock ROM, perform a factory reset after flashing stock, unlock, flash TWRP, restore nandroid.

so, in a nutshell, i just need to downgrade my phone to a stock rom of 4.3 or below and just search up a video of how to unlock it using the keypad method?
than if i wanted to, i could use the nandroid backup i did before and flash it and still have an unlocked phone?
You cannot use the free method once the phone is running a 4.3 or newer bootloader because you cannot properly run the 4.1.1 modem on a 4.3 or 4.4.2 bootloader and the 4.3 or 4.4.2 bootloader cannot be downgraded to a 4.1.1 bootloader.
Before flashing anything, which bootloader is on the phone?

Sorry for the noob question, but how do i found out my bootloader?
If this helps, my baseband is I747MVLUFOB3
I actually just logged on to get similar clarification. I have an unlock code, but it does not work when I enter it using OctOS-M. Do I need to be on a stock rom to unlock? Can I easily jump back to a stock rom, then back again to a marshmallow rom?

From what ive heard, you have to be on a stock rom. As of google, even then, some users have problems or cant, which from what ive heard, can be fixed by downgrading to 4.3 (make sure ur bootloader is the same or your phone WILL be bricked).
Please note that this is from what ive heard and may not be accurate.
Install the Samsung phone info app from the play store as it will tell you a lot.

My boot loader seems to be the same as my baseband.
What is the bootloader version?

That sounds problematic...I am on NJ2. I am not having any luck finding anything about getting back to stock on the newest bootloader.

Do you think this one would work?

Whats a CWM anyways?
CWM is Clockworkmod with is a custom recovery. CWM is outdated as it has not been updated for quite some time. Many recent custom ROMs now require TWRP.
You may be able to software unlock the phone but you'll probaby need a UART cable and Samsung Pro tools. I don't believe Pro Tools is free.
The linked thread is from 2014 and, in 2014, many phones were running 4.1.2 which meant the phone could be downgraded to 4.1.1 using and sim unlocked using the dialler's menu options.

Stupid question: Can the firmware be updated when running a custom ROM?

I've been reading on one of the other threads here that if you take an OTA while running stock + twrp, the firmware won't update, but you can then update it using fastboot.
Is it possible to update the firmware (not system) on a device using fastboot if it's running a custom ROM, or is it still required to restore to stock prior to taking the update?
Thank you.
Yes.
If you flash a firmware pulled straight from an OTA it will replace twrp with the stock recovery. Also flashing firmware may brake cell service on custom roms. If its a custom firmware zip that has boot, recovery, rcdata etc removed than you should be okay.
For example I'm using MaximusHD rom which is based on .401 (WWE/Europe) firmware. If i flash the US T-Mobile firmware I will loose cell service since the actual firmware files within /system are not made to work with that particular radio/firmware. I'll then have to flash the firmware/radio that was released for .401 or switch to a rom made with the T-mobile firmware.
BEWARE flashing firmware is a risky business. I've had HTC phones for years and the M9 i had kicked the bucket when i flashed a firmware package like i had done hundreds of times before. A random fluke bricked it.
So be careful what you do and accept possibly braking the phone before you even attempt something.

Is it possible to make my phone back to original state?

Hello all.
i have a Moto G5, with unlocked bootloader, Viper OS Rom and TWRP Recovery 3.2.2.0.
Can i restore the original motorola rom, original recovery and lock the bootloader ? is there any motorola tool with the option to restore my phone back to original state like the samsung kies (detect, download and install the original firmware so you can receive OTA updates again)?
i've searched on Motorola website and didn't found anything about it
You flash stock firmware via fastboot
Just download the firmware & flash each component - I wouldn't flash the partition or bootloader parts though
There's instructions if you search YouTube
