Question Do reliable root methods for rm 6 pro exist? (100% functional + root) - Nubia Red Magic 6

I know some people have rooted their rm 6 pro, but I can't seem to find a single resource that does the items below. Are we not there yet or does this info exist somewhere? Is anyone actively working on custom ROM, TWRP, etc if it's not solid yet?
-root rm 6 pro (not a mix-up guide with 6s, 6, 6 pro, 6s pro, etc - just rm 6 pro
-fingerprint reader works afterwards (either alt method or way to fix + caveats like if you need to back something up before rooting)
-magisk works
-passes the safety net checks
-basically - a root guide that results in 100% operational phone + rooted
My end goal is to port nethunter to red magic 6 pro but the various guides on rooting I've seen are either very old, don't leave phone 100% functional ('btw fingerprint reader is broke'), or have a group of users claiming the method bricked their device. I saw a telegram group based on a thread with a removed attachment to fix fingerprint reader, but people were saying to not try any of those things or I'll end up with a $800 brick like them.
I can wait if there is no solid guide, but the other part to this is finding out if it's being actively worked on or if it's not a popular enough model. Can cross nethunter on rm 6 pro off my list or do only after I upgrade later on if that's the case

Magisk vs. SuperSU (Redmi Note 5 PRO ONLY)

Recently, I encountered crashes/failures utilizing one of the root methods on a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. I won't say which, because I don't want to bias the Q&A, here:
Redmi Note 5 Pro users:
What are your preferences/suggestions/experiences regarding SuperSU or Magisk as the root method for the Note 5 Pro?
What are your successes, failures, specifics that could help other users select the best option for their mobile environment?
Please remember, either method may be sound, so share experiences and suggestions, only - try to avoid rebutting other users' comments, as their experience may not be the same as yours:
GO!
I prefer Magisk over Xposed mainly due to the ease of use. It has been sometime since i used xposed. However I have seen issues with xposed especially in secure environments like a corporate setup where there are sniffers to check if xposed or su are installed and you get booted out (I am not sure if i am doing anything incorrect) but magisk is lot more easier in these situations

Any way to try out LOS without installing it on a phone ?

Hi
I have a Honor 5X (kiwi / KIW-L21) as my daily driver and as its nearing the end of it warranty (2 years) its starting to run slower (good job, Huawei). Given this and the fact that during these two years i never received ANY update apart from an update to android 6.0.1 from android 5, im considering switching to LOS 16.
The thing is im completely new to custom ROMs, recovery, phone rooting and that jazz and im a bit scared.
I wanted to know if there is a way I can try out LOS 16 (say for example on a VM) to be sure that i like it before installing.
If not, would I be able to restore my phone back to its current OS in case i dont like LOS and want to fall back to EMUI ?
PS : I wanted to try it out on an older phone I have and for which i dont care as much, but its not supported :'( Its an Asus Zenfone go ZB552KL
Thanks in advance !
The oldphone approach is a good idea. Go to a recycling place and grab some old Motorola or Samsung phones. Broken screen is OK.

My local trash collecting place isn't very open to people who want to take stuff (yes, what a nonesense) but i'll try that i guess. The thing is we have like 3 or 4 old phones but none of them are listed as compatible on the LOS website

You don't need official. Search XDA and you will find unofficial lineageOS for many old phones. https://twrp.me/Devices/ is a good place to find the phone's code name. With that you can check stats.lineageos.org for popular ROM versions.
Will give it a look, thanks.
If nothing usefull comes out of this investigation and I end up doing it on my 5X, is there a way for me to backup the whole phone (i mean not just data, like the whole OS) that way I can fall back to its current state if something goes wrong / i dont like LOS ?

To be honest, there's various ways for backing up a whole device but, there's limited (possibly no) choices that all depends upon the device itself and the capabilities of said device. So there's no real way of answering this question without, also, taking under consideration that what works for one may/may not work for another.
With that stated...
I've always found that the only way to know if I like something as huge as updating the Custom Android version Firmware, is to "Hope for the Best and Prepare for the Worse".
I've been successful with Restoring TWRP Backups made but, have always had an (approximately) 50% +/- of a restoration working without any issues (a chance of requiring a fresh installation in the end).
In another words...
The only "recommended" way to upgrade/downgrade the LineageOS Android Versions is to make sure you have everything on hand for performing a fresh installation for both the upgrading and the downgrading of both Android Versions.
For anyone to guide you any other way should (ethically) be able to provide you with guidance in case something goes wrong in the process (of said guidance) with your specific device.
You should also ask for support and guidance within the LineageOS thread and, if needed, somewhere within the Device Dedicated Area of the forum that's specific to your device. This will help locate assistance from those who has your device as well.
For example...
[ROM][9.0.x] LineageOS 16.0 Official (kiwi) [NO VoLTE] by BadDaemon
[ROM] [9.x] LineageOS 16.0 Pie Unofficial for Honor 5x (kiwi) by coldhans
https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x
I hope that I had explained this okay via text...
I wish you the best of luck!

Hi there, thanks for the answer and sorry for the delayed reaction, I was busy
I will investigate on the linked threads and see what I want to do after that. My main concern being fingerprint sensor gestures (I know, stupid habits lol) asking on the kiwi forum is definitely a good idea. Same things for installing TWRP and the recovery, someone there would probably be able to help.
Thanks a lot for your time

Need to buy a new phone, will an S9 meet my developer needs?

Hi XDA-Developer members!
I am hoping someone can assist me in choosing a new phone. I have been using several Samsung S4s on AT&T for over 7 years with no problems.
I am a developer, so I rooted the S4 and installed many helpful apps like Xposed, Titanium backup, etc.
One VERY helpful (and a MUST have ability) was using flashfire which allowed me to do image backups. This allowed me to backup my current daily on a monthly basis and if it failed, I could be up and running on a spare S4 simply by doing a restore.
Well, AT&T just informed me they will not activate any new S4's and my current S4 will stop working in 2022 because it doesn't support VoLTE.
So, I am in the market for a new phone. But all the new phones have huge displays which doesn't work well for my preferred storage location of my front pocket.
However, I did find that the Samsung S9 is close enough to what the S4 provided:
Smaller then 6" screen
External Memory Slot
OLED display
3.5mm Headphone jack
So the last hurdle for the S9 to pass for me to use it is that I need to be able to root the S9 so I can run/install apps like these:
Magisk
Xposed (EdXposed)
Titanium Backup
TWRP or Flashfire
Hotspot (this is a MUST)
I have used ODIN to do simple flash updates to my S4 and other samsung devices, but I have little experience flashing a new kernel/bootloader. But I am willing to follow directions to do these.
I have no preference to any particular Android version, I would be fine to use Oreo, Pie or Q (remember I am currently still using Lollipop on my S4!!!)
I do prefer to use stock samsung roms instead of custom roms like Lineage
So I have some questions:
Should I get the AT&T model of the S9 (960U) or a G9600 or a G9500?
If you recommend the G9600, does it support all the AT&T bands? (I just want to get a good signal anywhere in the u.s.)
What thread should I use to root/Magisk the S9?
What thread should I used to install TWRP or flashfire so I can do image backups/restores?
What "gotchas" will I run into? (like fingerprint not working, camera not working, etc)
Any help to find a new replacement for my trusty old S4 would be greatly appreciated, and I would be happy to return the favor of buying you a few drinks of your choice!

Question OOS 11.2.9.9 and nReal Nebula service

Hi Guys,
First I do appologise if what I'm about to right sounds noobish. I'm not versed in editing roms.
I'm hoping for a few pointers on a few options and I can google the details but after 1 weeks of reading I'm more confused than when I started.
Background info:
HWD: Oneplus 9 Pro with nReal Light glasses (U+ black version)
Software:
- Existing ROM: OOS 11.2.9.9
- Nreal light glasses Nebula app and Nebula Service(2 versions - extracted from oppo and experia)
Problem:
- Can't install nebula service properly without editing the manifest because it requires the use of a shareuserid --> android:sharedUserId="android.uid.system".
I don't have access to the platform keys to sign the apk with the same keys.
If I remove the android.uid.system fromt he manifest the service works but loses the main functionality.
Questions:
1 - Editing existing ROM (I do like some of the features of OOS and if I can I'd stick with it for now)
A) Would it be possible to extract the partitions from OOS ===> I'm assuming a rom kitchen would do this but not 100% sure
B) Add my apk's signed by me and re-sign everything (including all the apps that use the android.uid.system user) without breaking god knows what? ===> I'm assuming this is also possible but I can't figure out if I have to re-sign anything else apart from the apps using android.uid.system(I have the list with all of them) or take apart any other partitions like vendor and such.
C) Could I get away with "just" taking apart the rom, signing all apps that use android.uid.system and then repack and flash ?
2- Building Lineage OS
A) Would it be possible to disable signature check for "just" android.uid.system user ID or the only way is to disable it system wide?
Just in case anyone wants to take a look out of curiosity, the service app is attached.
I'm grateful for any pointers.
Have a lovely Weekend!

CalyxOS - Secure, de-Googlefied

I recently managed to bollux up my 2XL, particularly the ability to install Recovery, TWRP or any other. After trying to install a series of ROMS, I found CalyxOS at https://calyxos.org/ CalxyOS is an interesting, security-focues de-Googlefied ROM that does not require or permit a Recovery installation, nor have I been able to root it. It's installed via use of a batch file run while booted to bootloader. CalxyOS comes with a lot a FOSS software, as well as the ability to use Google services if you want them (I do). I found that the best way to get some Google items installed at the system level was to use the Aroma version of Open Gaaps 11 https://opengapps.org/ and select the minimum of what I wanted, and then using the Aroma installer delete all the included stuff I did not want to make sufficient room for the installation. There is not enough room even to install Pico gaaps if you don't do it this way. I'm using this as a 2nd phone, mostly for tracking mileage in my car, so it has a Google Fi data chip, only. I booted TWRP from my computer and tried to install Magisk, unsuccessfully. Anyway, I at least have a working phone again!
From the CalxyOS website, it looks like only Pixel 3 and up are getting updates.
calyxos rapes my battery and lacks many basic android features, touts itself as secure while not taking amny extra steps to do so, beyond that of which every non-stock rom does
wheres the hardened or at least changable webview
the app isolation?
frequent security updates?
the list goes on, this rom seems just like an excuse to sell a overpriced product, a door to door scam that reminds me of purism or apple
2022-02-11
CalyxOS 2.14.0 - Android 11, February 2022 Security update is now available for the Pixel 2, 2 XL and Mi A2.
Sadly, we will no longer be able to provide OS updates for the Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL. The Xiaomi Mi A2 should get Android 12 at a later date, if everything goes well.
Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL
This is the final CalyxOS update for these devices. Google stopped updating the Pixel 2 series as of December 2020.
Up till now, we extended these phones useful lifetimes by patching the open source components: AOSP and the Linux kernel. Linux kernel 4.4 was a long-term support kernel, but has stopped receiving updates this month. ( see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel_version_history )
Unfortunately due to the kernel dependency, it is also not feasible to have Android 12 fully working on these devices. There are various community efforts, but there’s no fully working port as far we know.
As such, we have decided to stop updating these devices. Applications such as Chromium and microG will still continue recieving updates.
