Bug: "Oops! We broke the matrix. Someone call Neo!" error while posting content - About xda-developers.com

Hi,
So today i made several posts and topics, and i noticed that when it's not a small amount of text, it cannot be posted without a workaround.
This error will appear: "Oops! We broke the matrix. Someone call Neo!" and it tells me to look in the console for more details. If i look there, it turns out to be an 403 Forbidden without any other useful details provided

The above meaning of this (403) makes me think it's a misconfiguration on XDA's end, therefore a site bug. It is very annoying, as it makes you unable to just post what you wrote, if it's not a small amount of text. So it will consume your time for the workaround or even prevent people from posting & throw their effort in the bin, if they don't know about the workaround
Workaround
First make a smaller post (so you cut down your text, and save the rest that is 'too long' according to the bug) and then once posted, edit it. Add the missed text while editing, and click Save.. that will work without errors.

Maybe i should do what the error message asks? Call Neo?

What I usually do is write all my stuff out before hand on a text file, then copy pasta. It is much more efficient!

what do you mean? I used the workaround that i described, so i could still make the posts that first gave me this "Matrix" error
So if you need a reference, those are:
Topic 1
Topic 2
Yes, now they exist, because i used the workaround of first shortening it, and later editing back in the text i cut from it, to avoid the error while initially posting it. And certainly i had all text in my editor and then respectively the "Post thread" and "Post reply" buttons gave me the error, if that's what you meant.
The issue really looks like a 'character limit', but in a way of a bug. It's not like it says "Too many characters" or anything, lol. But still, 403 means the server refuses it.

In order to address your concern, I must first have you understand an undeniable truth, although I'm afraid it may be difficult to accept... This truth is that there is no post. It never existed. It never was and never will be. This is the reason for the error. An anomaly to a mathematical equation inherent to the program which can never be solved. The challenge you face going forward, is that you can either embrace this truth, or run from it.
The choice is up to you.

You don't believe me, i also said it replying to the PM: im sure about my case, my eyes dont lie haha. I mean, the text editor was filled with content that i intended to post, and it just refused to post it (with that error) unless i made it shorter, and then i could edit it in later.
So, to hopefully make you believe me, i just recorded a video for proving the bug:
https://streamable.com/owu2u3
I think your error logs are giving you the wrong impression, like the bug causes them to be limited as well? So it like indicates there was no content, as the bug make the content non-transmittable in the first place?
Did anyone else face this issue, when making posts & topics that aren't small? Like the size of my example topics that required the workaround to post
Edit: Neo informed me that he was making a joke about a glitch in the matrix, and i didnt watch the movies so i was clueless, heh. But now i finally laughed.

So if I say take the Red pill it won't make much sense either.... LoL
I'll do some experimenting with the problem you've had. I'm not sure if it's a character limit or maybe the range of mixed content you have (links, code etc).
I've not had reports of this from other people though.
Did you say you type it up in another app then copy paste to XDA?

It wasn't me who mentioned typing it up in another app.. that was jenneh. I don't know if maybe he faces the same issue (or various), so that he resorted to that
I wrote the content entirely in XDA's text editor.. when it comes to mixed content, all i did was:
- Have cursive and non-cursive text combined
- Have links (added through the XDA editor link button)
- Have varying text sizes, with size selected through the XDA editor
But when it comes to the last point, yes i did copypaste content from other locations in my text/other posts on XDA forums.. not to use it at all, but to work around a font size bug that also exists: see Issue: cannot select original font size, after changing it once in the editor purely for it to inherit the size of the copied text (which was original size). So it was to use the workaround, and then remove the copied text again. I doubt this step was involved though
Also, if it's content, it's weird that you can edit it in afterwards, but not post it right away. I'd figure that guide writers & release topic starters are the first ones to run into this (if the issue is triggered by an invisible, non intended character limit through a bug). Maybe no one reported it because large posts aren't so common, and then if they want to, they will simply spend half a minute to perform the "Editing it in" workaround rather than reporting it. It's a simple workaround because editing in lets you preserve the layout & style if you're copying it directly from another tab, the tab in which you failed to submit the post. So i figure people duplicate the tab once they run into the issue, post it in the new tab with only like 30% of content size, and then edit it in from the original tab. Thanks for investigating the issue!

Ok, well there could be several possibilities.
I have increased the Character limit from 60000 to 80000
There are several other things that can prevent posting.
Minimum 3 minutes between discussion posts
min 30 seconds between regular posts
max 20 messages per page
40 images per page
and it was 5 media embeds per page now 10.
There is also a screening for certain words and phrases and repetitions of some words/phrases.
The reason splitting posts sometimes works is because the system screens the part you are just about to post not the combination of the existing part plus the new part. So for things like repeated text, links etc., it can sometimes circumvent the standard limits.
On the character limit above (which I've increased), it does count unseen background code as characters. Sometimes if text is copied from other Apps it copies huge amounts of invisible and unused code which can gobble up the character limit.

Same here.
The site glitch's or freezes occasionally. Lol, I attribute it to the relentless site maintenance being preformed.
The old problem of losing an entire post while composing it is gone, yay!
But the blue...

Site maintenance happens very often, of late. I don't know why but it is being looked into.
Quite probably, the issue is not on your side. When you have the issue, just wait for a couple of minutes and refresh the page. You should be good to go.

Pretty obvious. No big deal unless you are punching the post button, then bad things sometimes happen
That's annoying, but the site is better then before about losing data while writing a post; auto backup seems to work but it's a bit twitchy.
Lol, so the mod gods can't work seamlessly in the background? I'm appalled

ok, i might get some heat for this but i am prepared. this has nothing at all to do with smartphones, but i dont know of anybody else with the amount of computer working knowledge as you guys here at the xda, so i turn to you with my problem.
i was tying up a questionnaire on the web. it was taking a while, and i was tired, so i went to bed. in the morning, i finished it, but the website had logged me out, so i couldn't submit it. this is worth a big chunk of my grade, and needs to be done tomorrow.
so my question, does anybody know a way to copy multiple text boxes and paste them into an identical web page?
mods, if there is a problem with me posting an unrelated (yet necessary) question, please delete.
all i need is one person who knows the answer. anybody?????

Cant you just copy each text box one by one? Why do you need to copy them all at once?
Maybe I don't fully understand your question here but can't you just copy everything, paste it all into a document, sign back in to the website, and then copy it all from the doc and paste it into the website and submit it?
sitlet: because there are 400 text boxes. that is my last resort.
metal: i tried copying everything, but somehow, it doesnt even copy the text.
thank you both for replying. i honestly didnt think people would like me posting something so random...
What about opening up a new tab, signing in, and then going back to your first tab and submitting your stuff? I don't want you to lose all your hard work but it seems to me like that might work.
If anybody gets pissed off for you asking this, then they have a stick up their ass. You help out enough people here, I think it's more than acceptable for you to ask a question every now and again, regardless if it's on topic or not.
thank god for autocomplete! instead of copying 400 text boxes, i only need to copy 40, and google chrome autocompletes the rest. thanks for all your help. thread is sort of closed notw.

MetalHead: interesting and innovative solution, nice suggestion. I bet it would work.
OP: Forum members get annoyed when people arrogantly ask questions, demand answers, don't even attempt to perform a simple google search, and disregard the fact that a given question is off-topic. Your 'humble' approach invites others to help, especially as we have all been in a similar situation in the past.

Ok, so thank you all for the help. Thankfully, google chrome auto completed about 80 percent of my work. I typed the questions and it remembered the answers. That was a recommendation. I love chrome. Eiter way, I got it all done, so i oficially call this thread closed.
Thread said not to look so I thought I would check it out. I've been meaning to try out chrome but I figure google already gets enough information from me. Having their web browser is just one step closer to them knowing absolutely everything I do lol

[RESOLVED] [Q] [REQ] Strikethrough?

Resolved - Already implemented. Lock/ignore this thread
Any chance we could get a strikethrough feature in the forums here? The use is obvious but I will give an example anyway. I report a bug, that bug was added to a buglist in the original post but the software in regard is still pending a bugfix. Making this strikethrough makes it obvious for other users to ignore it, and editing the post by just deleting the text is a inconsistent in regards to completion and research. [EDIT] In other words, other readers will see that this matter has been reported and is being taken care of. Assuming the majority of our users are moderately intelligent, this could make the place a LOT cleaner. [/EDIT]
There's no need to add a button even, just for those "in the know" to use even with ... bbcode or add the <del>...</del> HTML tags to the forum software's allowed tags.
I understand that some forums do not like this feature but I can't remember why, I always found it very useful when editing my posts. It's a lot less annoying for other readers than to completely delete an entire paragraph of text. With that said, if there is a reason why this won't be implemented I will not press it any further.
Thanks!

Signature image restrictions

I know this board is HUGE and I'm just one voice, but I wanted to get this out there.
Signature images should be disallowed.
That, or sig image sizes need to be heavily restricted.
It has gotten really out of hand as of late and makes the forum a scroll-fest. It is unnecessary and downright frustrating when surfing via a phone or tablet.
Case and point... 2 posts. One with one word, one with a very short sentence. 2 posts take up the ENTIRE screen. Come on...
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Neither image adds anything useful to either poster's content and neither image is really useful for anything else.
Even more annoying is some user's sig images eat up an entire page by themselves. When half a thread's space is eaten up with worthless sig images, it just makes the board look like a cluttered mess.
Venting over.
you are right about images being a bit large in some cases which annoys me too when i am on PC.. but you mentioned its hard to navigate in site due to this at mobile and tablet.. there are apps for mobiles and tablets for that reason.. so why use site through browser when you have app which doesnt show these signatures?
there are some images which are too large which makes it hard.. but the above 2 doesnt seems to be that big.. but nice suggestion.. may be you should say this here to get mods/admins attention better..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987254
You should report it to your fsm, with a link to the user profiles...
Do not engage yourself, as people may not always agree with you...
Just report to a mod, works everytime for me
This signature space is dedicated to the OT Thanks feature. RIP OT thanks, you shall be missed.

The first signature doesn't look too big IMO.
The post would be of same length without the signature.
Can't really say something about the second signature, as it does not end at the end of your screenshot.
So that could in deed be too big.
Extremely big signature should be reported to the forum specific maoderator (FSM), but if you feel that it is only "a little bit" too big, than you can PM the user in a friendly way.
I have done this several times like: "You have a very nice signature and a really good looking picture in there. Maybe you can even improve your signature by using a smaller picture or optimizing the arrangement of the parts in your signature so that your post can be read better. And this could also save some space in the threads as well."
All users that I PMed like this answered very pleased that they feel thankful for my tips and changed their signatures.
Maybe I was lucky ... but if you provide your help to optimize their sigantures, most people will at least tolerate it IMO.

Yes, you found the extreme example.
Saw this guy's signature already in another thread ... he seems to like his phone ... and his own face
But some other users may not like to see this large picture below each of his posts.
Here a [HIDE][SIGPIC][/SIGPIC][/HIDE] would be a solution ... for him to keep his big picture and for all other to not see it
@ExperienceD
Holy [email protected]#$% @ the last picture. Damn, that guy's signature is huge!
We do police image sizes to an extent. if one is larger than it needs to be, we'll ask the member to reduce the size or remove it.
But remember you can hide signatures from being shown in your profile settings. http://forum.xda-developers.com/profile.php?do=editoptions

The problem with this 'solution' is that you are effectively encouraging people to hide signatures. However ... a lot of the longer-serving members have useful links in their sigs, the sort of things that a noob should see, notice and read to avoid asking stupid questions or breaking the rules of XDA. Hiding signatures means this information is lost.
Many complain they can't see my signature hidden in spoilers.. But I can see.. And when we use xda in 2013 beta 1024 mode.. We can see.. Why is that so?

Ha yep they sure don't.
@Chukudu seriously, remove that gif. Also reduce the font size pls.
What I don't like is that I've observed people that put (LONG TEXT) signature in THE POST, tough with spoiler.. And I've seen an user with high posts count.
BUT the problem is that you just takes precious database space with duplicate/redundant data.
Signatures should be put ONLY in signature section and not in the post.
PS: the in-post signature I've seen really contains pretty long text (about used phone, rom, kernel, etc) and in most cases the signature length is higher than the actual post information.
PS2: I'm not talking about tapatalk signatures "Posted using Tapatalk". Even If I do not agree with those too, because there are work-arounds. Eg: extract tapatalk information from post's user agent [I doubt that Tapatalk doesn't send custom UA in combination of actual mobile). This way you can save a lot of DB tables space.

That is absurd...he can't really be copy pasting all that crap into all his posts!
I still think it's his tapatalk sig..or maybe something is wrong with him.
Err..not all his posts contain that.

XDA Gallery - Chrome Extension - Now on Chrome Store

What is it:
This is a quick extension I coded up to turn XDA threads into an image gallery. The extension button will enable when you're on a topic that it is able to translate, clicking it will open a new tab that dynamically fetches images as your scroll down. Keep in mind this is an Alpha, did it in one day, so it may ( read "most likely" ) will have problems. Its great on those "Post your screenshots" ( wallpapers, cases, whatever ) type threads.
Permissions:
- "Access your data on forum.xda-developers.com" - This is to fetch images from the forum, I haven't messed around with removing it since I was just using this personally but decided to release to you. Promise I don't care, nor gather, anything about what you do on XDA.
- "Access your tabs and browsing activity" - This is to detect when you switch between tabs and enable/disable the extension button. Also I do have this hooked into Google Analytics now, but I only gather extension page views to see what's being used. In the future I'll be hooking it into events as I add features( if it's popular enough ) to decide where to put my efforts. No personal information is collected.
- "Storage": Allow extension to save Extension Settings.
How to Install:
New: Added to official Chrome store now just add via https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/xda-gallery-beta/bohmnlfnbncjhpjagccfgblhcdgicdnp
Reporting Bugs:
If you'd like to report bugs then please give me the thread you had an issue with, and if you can narrow it down to an image then link to the post containing that image ( if it's working, there is a link under each image to bring you to the post. ).
What's Next:
Currently the extension will start showing images from the forum page you launched it from. Going to implement a way to jump to the beginning or specific page.
Implement scrolling upwards to load the previous pages images, this is needed for the next item.
Lots more ideas for "community" type features But gotta get the basics hammered down first!

Added an "Advanced" options section allowing you to override the number of images and fetch all of them. ( If it doesn't work correctly on some thread blame mon5trum, he requested it )
Some bug fixes
3/9/2013
Now when viewing images in the popup you can click to view prev and next, or just use the arrow keys to navigate!
New Extension Settings page, styled to blend in and match chromes style for settings.
Setting to adjust the minimum number of images to fetch( Careful here as it wont render any images until it finds at least this number, could take awhile if you try and use on a thread that doesn't have many images ).
Setting to turn on debug mode ( Will show logging in the Chrome console. NOTE: I'd leave this disabled unless you need to troubleshoot an issue as it could slow down logic a bit )
3/7/2013
Lots of fixes and enhancements in this one.
First off, thanks to Pooley! He is an awesome guy, and very talented. Thanks to him with have a great, professional looking icon!
Aspect ratio is now respected
Added image zoom capability
Now identify images with broken links and shows in small window( as to not break scrolling functionality for now )
Images should also layout nicely in a column format
Fixed quite a few bugs( hopefully without creating new ones )
Hmmm... seems like there should be more, but I'm too lazy to look at my commit log, so just check it out

NEW: Now on the official Chrome Web Store
Starting to work on the look a bit, its still pretty ugly lol... What can I say, graphic design isn't my thing, but it'll get better
1/27/2013
Pretty much a complete rewrite
Fixed loading duplicate issues
Better error handling( Will tell you when it's reached the end of the thread )
Asynchronous loading should now be working correctly
Do you find this useful? Click the Thanks button to send me some encouragement... Or if you're feeling really generous buy me a redbull to keep me going at the keyboard ( If not, no worries, it's hardly expected )

Like I stated in the OP, it's really hard for me to help you unless you give me the forum topic URL that you tried to open with the extension. Get me that and I can take a look at what's going on.

I got it man.. it didn't work with any off topic section threads...
Does it by any chance only supposed to work with windows chrome version?
I use Ubuntu 11.10 with latest chrome version...

Didn't use anything that would exclude Linux, I'll have to look into that.
Been awhile since I updated this, but did a complete rewrite of the extension, should now be working much better. Replaced attachment with new extension and added changelog in the OP.
Now in the official Chrome Web Store Click here to install
That's an awesome feature mate !
If you want I can made an active/inactive icon suggestions for your extension
Awesome !
Definetly Cool!
The first thing you should fix is to show the pictures in the correct ratio cause at the moment it looks like this:
Hope I voted correct in the poll

Yea, that would be awesome... I'm sure it'll come eventually( *fingers crossed* )
It doesn't work if the page contains a gif. But gifs are shown in the gallery though.
Example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38762538#post38762538. And i think sometimes it also happens if a gif is present in a user's signature.
--edit--
It's working now. Seems to be haphazard.
Chrome store just told me Android not supported...

Ok here is the icon. first attempt. zip contains psd + png (512, 38, 19).
Will try another way as I don't see clearly the pic on 19x19 res. But it's a first try, tell me more about color, about shapes what do you eventually like to see in the icon.
FYI no active/inactive as the inactive will be the greyscaled version of the active one
OK second try
I like this one (minimalist and easely recognizable even in 19x19) what do you think ?
Also attach a zip with psd + png (512, 38, 19) ON/OFF mode

Account Retrieval Bug - Captcha

Hi there,
Just letting you guys know about some odd behavior I encountered.
I couldn't remember if I had an account here or not, so I figured I'd try a password (username) retrieval, and no matter how many times I tried, I kept getting "The string you entered for the image verification did not match what was displayed."
I'm always careful to refresh Captchas until I'm absolutely certain I know what it says, and I tried 5+ times - I can't be that bad at entering them!
I know now that I didn't have an account on the site, and this was presumably why it was giving an error - albeit the wrong description for the error.
Thanks,
Moley

Yeah, if the account doesn't actually exist that'll mess a few things up!

Haha, it would seem so.
A "There is no account for this email address on this site" error may have been more appropriate thought!
I'm sure a site full of developers can appreciate the need for accurate error codes/reporting

Indeed. If there's one thing I really hate, it's when I execute a command or, well, do something, and when it has an error, it either doesn't return a message at all, or it returns an obscure message that doesn't help anyone fix the problem. Major pet peeve of mine.
Is there anything more I can do to bring this to the attention of the webmasters (mods?)?
Other than through the contact link down the bottom of the page (I feel that wouldn't be the most efficient).
Cheers

If I'm not mistaken, the only options are:
1. Use the inefficient contact link method
2. PM the moderator to which you'd like to bring the problem
3. Post it on XDA (which, of course, you've already done)
I'm not aware of any other methods.
