Hello friends,
I've been searching for a proper guide on how to root this device, but can't seem to find an authentic one.
I've rooted countless devices before, but the main reason I'm hesitant is that I can't find VBMeta and I'm not sure what to do with it.
So my questions are:
How do I surely root this device? You don't need to provide a full answer, just a link to a guide you trust will suffice.
What exactly do I need other than the ROM img?
What are VBMETA and Verity?
And finally, can someone confirm if this guide works fine?
Thank you very much, and a bit late but, happy new year!

step 1: Bootloader unlocking (https://en.miui.com/unlock/download_en.html)
Step 2: Rooting (probably you don't need it,

VBmeta:
in short, flashing vbmeta.img basically disables the "verified boot".

Thanks for your help!
So a last question is do you know anything about the encryption patch? And do i need it to flash a custom ROM?

No man, not much. devs can tell you more about this.
Of course, anything that respects user's privacy, provides better UX, secure & less buggy than the stock ROM you can try it. If a custom ROM provides all or most of these, you can surely switch to custom ROMs.

ARB hard-brick after Bootloader unlock? Way to avoid?

After a month of waiting for the unlock code and wishing anal and testicular cancer on Xiaomi CEO and senior management, I'll finally (hopefully) get it in 2 days.
It's 6GB/128GB and ROM version is 9.6.11.0.OEDCNFD (Chinese ROM, bought through a friend in China who shipped it). I have many questions, and hoping on some kind strangers for help.
- Should I be worried about anti-rollback and hard-brick after unlocking, based on my ROM version?
- What's the best way to ensure I don't get hard-brick?
- I want to switch to Treble based ROM and leave miui-bs - are there any reasons to not do so or wait (like some hardware doesn't work, camera quality poor, bad battery life, no volte etc)
- What's the safest/surest guide to install TWRP, vanilla android based custom ROM, Magisk etc?
If it wasn't obvious, the Anti-Rollback, hard-bricking has me scared sh!tless, and the month long wait (after the wait for phone release, availability, and shipment) has me on edge. This might very well be my last Xiaomi phone (because of their policies), but I don't want to brick it and let all this endless wait be for nothing /rantover

Your version is not ARB. Follow my buggy vendor rom thread. Skip to twrp install, and flash 8.8.9 eu. You can also flash revolution OS if you want to try that. https://miui.revtechs.me/en/mimax3/

Not ARB, so there's no way I'd get bricked once I bootloader unlock? that's a huge relief if that's true!
Thank you kind sir for that guide, it's very helpful.
Have you tried Treble based ROMs? I know it's a personal preference over MIUI, but would you consider them stable and comparable to 8.8.9 EU?

You won't get bricked. You are most welcome. Everyone in this forum is quite helpful, and I've learned a lot from their informative posts as well.
Yes, I've tried AICP treble rom. No treble rom is ready yet for stable use because they all have the same problems that do not function correctly: auto brightness/brightness control, bluetooth media/bluetooth calls, quick charging, VoLTE, and mono speaker instead of stereo speakers.

Thank you again for the quick reply and the reassurance about not having to worry about getting bricked. I'm so glad I didn't click on the the Update button when I got the notification right after turning the phone ON haha
Ah okay, so no Treble for now. I'll wait for things to get stable. The Max in the phone's name so far has meant 'Maximum Wait'.
I'll follow your guide and install 8.8.9 EU.
From your guide I understand it's only optional, but what's the advantage of 'Changing file system from ext4 to f2fs'?

Well, f2fs is the latest/fastest file system, supposedly. Also, there are less chances of corruption/data problems? I believe that's what i read in regards to it and why people were switching over to that when they had issues with their user data; they were having to format their user data and start fresh....but don't quote me on it. I will let someone with more knowledge on this answer you and others in detail. You can leave it for now. My file system is default ext4.
If you run into any hiccups, feel free to PM me, and I'll guide you as best as I can. :highfive:

And I'm leaning towards sticking with ext4, to side with stability over speed.
Thank you for all the help, and the offer to PM you if I get stuck - I'll try to not bother you too much, I promise lol

Greetings @roberto_1986,
Your choice between A9 and A10 will summarize easily. Do you need one of the new features provided on A10 which was not present on A9 version? If you do not know or if you are not sure, then you dont need A10, stick to A9 for now. Less bugs, better performance and battery life. OS is more mature.
Now regarding rooting, on A9 Rom nothing as easy as pressing the root button under the LR TWRP (1104 version for A9 1210 for A10), then pressing the Closing AVB 2.0 button and you are done. From there you can update to latest stable version within the OS (do not use the beta ones, no point using those and it did not work for me). Works like a charm. I am on MIUI 11.0.2.0 (A9) EEA and never had any kind of issues using this method a few times. I never tried the A10 version of the LR TWRP so I have no idea if they offer the same option for rooting on A10 or not.
You can also unroot from that same LR TWRP in case that would be required at some point.
Hope this helps.

I am unsure if OFFICIAL TWRP 3.4.0 is meant for A10, I suggest you to read their its thread to see if people are using it on A10 or not. Personally I installed it yesterday on A9 and it saved my day restoring a backup made with some other UNOFFICIAL TWRP.
The UNOFFICIAL LR TWRP (chinese/english) which was released last year is the version which includes the rooting ability for A9 (and maybe for A10 too). OFFICIAL TWRP does not have such additional goodies since it is the OFFICIAL branch of TWRP.
You can check this guide using the UNOFFICIAL LR TWRP to root device, ALL steps you need to take to root your device properly are explained here. That's for A9, not A10.
[GUIDE][BEGONIA]Unlock Bootloader, Flash TWRP and Root[PROPER]
Note a quick search within forums would have probably leaded you there, try it next time, that's helpful feature of forums
As for the UNOFFICIAL LR TWRP (by wzsx150) thread for P and Q you can find it there:
[RECOVERY][begonia][UNOFFICIAL by wzsx150][P/Q]TWRP recovery for Redmi Note 8 Pro
Rooting A9 from the LR TWRP 1104 is guaranteed to work. That's what I used myself. As for A10 (Q) I have no idea, check/ask the thread.
Let us know how it turns out and you did to make it work.
Good Luck!

That's very wise not to install stuff you find from internet from unknown sources.
Not sure how you found that website, but I never heard of it or even seen it for the matter. I would not consider it safe myself.
I used to be able to download stuff from MiFirm which *looked* more legit but who knows.
You can find the required files from the xda threads I posted above, it may come from individuals, but I do consider it safer somehow because we have feedback from xda users. Back then when we installed those unofficial version there were not official support of any kind anyway so we kind of had to be 'advanturous'. I dont even remember from where I got mine myself.
Best I can do for you is to provide you with the checksums of the file I did use to root my A9 and reflashed not so long ago.
Code:
$ md5sum recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1104-REDMI_NOTE8PRO-CN-wzsx150.img
e41bba28984f14ea56da98448cd2c17d *recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1104-REDMI_NOTE8PRO-CN-wzsx150.img
$ sha256sum recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1104-REDMI_NOTE8PRO-CN-wzsx150.img
8f203aec69f1ed021badac0f94d1906fcf0530f0e41beddcbc49652705c8731b *recovery-TWRP-3.3.1-1104-REDMI_NOTE8PRO-CN-wzsx150.img
This way whatever source you are getting the file from you'll be able to check it against my sums which will guarantee you got the same version I did use. However I cannot guarantee they are 'legit'.
Before you proceed any further, I want to stress you never told me the flavor of the phone you own. Mine is Global EU phone flavor running an original stock MIUI.11.0.2.0_A9_PGGEUXM. If own a Chinese flavor (ordered on Alibaba, Aliexpress etc etc) you need to be extra cautious for example as they tend to brick more from what I read.
I also remind you need an unlocked bootloader and I strongly recommend you to apply the Anti-Brick solution as described in my previous post. If you restored to stock image using MiFlash or SP Flash Tools it is very likely you need to reapply those even if you did it before. Best to apply them twice than none.
Hope this helps.

The Megathread is pretty much self explanatory for the Anti-Brick method, I cannot explain it any better than how it is explain there. Please refer to the link given in one of my previous posts and just apply the first part with flashing preloader.bin and lk.img as explained.
It will basically provide you with a safety belt in case you do anything wrong with your phone on A9 resulting in bricking the device, bootloop or whatever, so you can Flash stock back on using MiFlash / SP Flash Tool without having to need an authorized account.

This file might not be there, it is a file you have to delete to prevent OS to restore Mi Recovery 3 over your TWRP at reboot (making impossible to have TWRP stick on the phone).
In order to see that file you first need to mount 'system' in the options but as I said it is not always there.

As I said earlier, I have no experience in A10 (Q) problems as I am not willing to jump in there staying on A9 (P).
A10 benefits is not worth the risks to me. The Anti-brick method is well explained in the Megathread I posted the link few posts earlier, however, it's for A9 only not A10.
Looking at the lists of bugs still present on A10, I really see no point running A10 atm. But well anyone does what pleases him/her he he
Good Luck!

But well anyone does what pleases him/her he he
Good Luck!

It used to pass before, at least it was when I first installed it. Then google made some updates and it is not passing anymore. I am not an expert about that, but I know there are some threads where people are talking about this particular thing.
What is it useful for?

I see.
No actually it was the other way around. When I first rooted in Feb it was passing both tests (green true).
Then one day after google made its changes it stopped working. But I only retro-graming so it is not so important for me.
Have you tried MagiskHide for the games you want to play with?
I cannot really help you with this further because I never tried to fix these myself not really needing to.
Anyway if you search Redmi Note 8 Pro forums you will see some other people are having the issue, at first I thought it was a A10 problem but probably is with the device.
Also you may found help in the telegram group REDMI NOTE 8 PRO OFFICIAL many gamers there I think.
Good luck and please let us know of your findings.

Help instlaling custom ROM please :(

So, my Mi A2 Lite just decided to make 3g/4g not work anymore.
I was thinking of installing a custom ROM but I'm scared of that anti-rollback thing; you know, I'd prefer not to brick my device.
I was looking into HavocOS and POSP: my device is on Pie and has Magisk on it.
How can I install a custom ROM without bricking the device? (I need my phone, lol)
EDIT:
also, what about downgrading? I saw someone managed to do that but I'd like to be sure
EDIT2:
I just ran "fastboot getvar anti" and it gave me "anti: " with no value, why is that?
thx every1 <3

Hi, thanks for replying.
I saw those threads, but anti-rollback is not mentioned anywhere.
That's why I started this thread, to be sure that I'm not missing anything haha
So can I proceed with those guides without worrying about ARB?

Need guidance regarding flashing a rom on my Mi A2 lite

Hello guys, i am new in this community and i have got this mi a2 lite 3/32. The big issue that i am facing is that of performance on this device i have to start it twice a day for it to work perfectly. So i watched a few videos and discovered custom roms for this device. I am new to all of this i dont even know the basics of it. I have never flaashed a custom rom before so i wanted to ask if there are threads on basics which explain flashing step by step and in a safe manner.
You could find a step by step guide here.
I use Havoc OC for more than 3 month and it works better then the stockrom.
If you have no experience with flashing a phone be prepared for the way back to the stockrom with the Miflash-Tool. You will find a usefull description for this case in the guide linked above.

didnt find any step by step based on that guide specially for mi a2 lite
You could find a short step by step guide in the first post of every thread which is related to a custom rom.
For example:
HavocOS
Lineage OS
Also this guide is very helpfull.

I expect that all custom rom show a better task management then the original rom.
My own experience is based on Havoc OS and it works very good.
Your device is 3/32 or 4/64?

No, you just need to unlock the bootloader.
You can find detailed instructions here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...k-or-other-failures-mi-a2-lite-daisy.4351947/

My is 4/64, but the task management with the original ROM is worse on both devices.

Question Building AOSP for Red Magic 8 Pro

I'm looking to build AOSP for the Red Magic 8 Pro. Has anyone managed to get the proprietary binaries from Nubia or extract it from the stock firmware?
I have tried searching around for these binaries to no avail. If someone has a download link to share I would really appreciate it. I just want a completely stock android experience and don't mind if not everything isn't working.
Do you really want AOSP or Paranoid Android will do as well? In any case, download OTA here, extract payload.bin and use payload-dumper-go. You can use LineageOS instructions for getting binaries from unpacked .omg files.

Have they already released a ROM for this phone? If not, AOSP builds without most Google trash and I block many of their domains in the hosts file just in case. I did finally find a dump here: https://github.com/RandomPush/nubia_nx729j_dump
Appreciate your help though. I'll post my progress here in case anyone is interested. The android developer documentation says proprietary binaries are usually located in a /vendor partition. Going through the dump now and trying to figure out the bare minimum to get a custom ROM booted.
My guesses are anything Qualcomm related for the SoC. I'm unsure of what baseband/radio chips the phone uses, actually it's been pretty tough to find a good spec sheet on it. Most resources that come up on Google only refer to surface level specs and don't go into much detail on the chips themselves.
No, they haven't, but I've seen people working on it. It would be a bit easier to bring up because PA is CLO-based (not AOSP), so the probability of most stuff working is higher. CLO has some Qualcomm-specific patches. Actually, you can probably build QSSI (like GSI but from CLO) without much difficulties, so this might be the way to go.
I'd recommend that you extract those binaries from OTA anyway as they might be updated in the future. Out of the box you probably won't get working vibration.
With the kernel source released, what's so difficult with building LineageOS and stuff?

We need a good unbricking method just to be on the safe side (personally, I'm not very keen on even trying someone else's build, let alone making my own, simply too much risk). Other than that, a lot of time is needed and there are basically zero good instructions. Once again, LOS isn't the best option for 8g2, would be better to go for Paranoid Android. One can theoretically build QSSI image (basically GSI, but for Snapdragons), might be a good idea for now. Still risky tho

What are the bricking issues here? Usually even if the ROM is f*cked or just something doesn't work you can always flash back to stock through TWRP.

If only there was a fully working TWRP... Unfortunately, there isn't. Well, kind of. It boots but that's it. And no, sideload simply doesn't work. When I went back to stock on my previous device (1+7 Pro), I had to use MSM Tool. Nothing like that is available for RM8P, ZTE doesn't want to give the tools to us because of bs reasons.

Hmm, as I can see from this post, it seems peeps have managed to actually restore the phone from a full brick..: Post
Edl or its countparts is not a necessity for buiding a custom rom. 1st, a custom rom usually just overwrite the application parts, so in the worst case the user can still restore to factory rom via fastboot commands. 2nd, many manufacturers never release their factory rescue tools (Google, ?) but there are numerous custom roms, even official builds.

Or not. In fact, happened to me (Qualcomm crashdump mode or something like that). And if something could go wrong, it will.

Usually those devices have much less ROMs available if any. Just compare 1+9 Pro and 10 Pro.

Bruh the custom ROM and modding community is so mid and goofy for the RM8P Literally one of the main things making me go for a Poco F5 instead

Well yeah, but as explained/talked about here, AOSP/LineageOS has to be technically possible
I got the rom maybe extract and check it? Take out alipay security then we can try it

Maybe share the ROM file, then we can try finding some way to remove forced payment/crack it (No paid ROMs allowed in XDA forums) and maybe possibly clean it somewhat (Does it even have english as an option?) and we'll finally get ourselves a finally working alternative custom ROM.
