AFAIK this does not apply to 12L beta 3

No, just A12

I have updated to this version. Retained root. No data wipe.

Keeping root is easy with Magisk
- uninstall with option "restore images"
- take update OTA
- install with option "install to inactive slot (after OTA)"
- Reboot using Magisk prompt
- Done

Updating now. Why do these updates take like an hour to install??

if you download and flash the full factory image with edited flash-all file to not wipe, it will install almost instantaneously.

It's been a source of contention lately and it never used to be this long. You can still work on the device while it's doing its thing but it's a pain for sure. I don't think installing the entire image is needed or even possible if you're not rooted, but an adb sideload of the OTA is much simpler and quicker. I've done both lately and haven't noticed any differences in device performance. I did the Feb update OTA and it took over an hour. January I did the sideload and it took about 8 minutes but offline the whole time. Pick your poison.

Reboot has to be the last step, and while in Magisk. You have lost root unfortunately

when I flashed this update manually, it did stuff that it normally doesnt do....for instance the messages said it was resizing partitions.....that generally takes a bit longer to do....I was rather surprised.

I used the Full file method but regardless if the full file repartition things, I am pretty sure the OTA did the same...

Mine didn't take an hour.

My .02, since I saw it resizing partitions, its obviously going to take longer on a "live" phone as in via OTA. It probably resized the second slot, moved stuff over, and then did the same on the first slot......I am just guessing a bit, but suspect that would be the method....
I think using the manual full file flash method, it took probably less than 10 minutes, but it always feels like an hour!

What does it mean :"take OTA update" here? I restored stock image and tried to update via system settings/system update but still getting "couldn't update"

New update?

Is anyone else getting prompted for a system update? I'm rooted so I don't want to install. Update is 154.6 MB.
UPDATE: DO NOT install the update if you don't have stock recovery. You will end up in a boot loop.

Well its quite a small update at 154 mb
Installed update
Hey guys I just installed the update and it broke my root :cyclops:
Were you able to root again?
Apparently it's D85110m update. So it's updating from D85110c to m. The person that I saw that updated hadn't rooted so no clue on the rooting thing.
Count me in the group with system update notification. I got rid of it by installing xposed module GravityBox, going under status bar settings - ongoing notification blocker - Google Play services (picture looks like that of update) - reboot.
I don't know what other notifications this may block, but for now, it gets rid of that. Also of note, I would NOT take the OTA. Usually it breaks root and/or bootloops you.
HELP
So in my half awake brilliance, I installed the update. My phone is now boot cycling to the TWRP recovery. Any ideas?

I haven't tried to re-root yet. I was rooted with stump root earlier. Stump root doesn't work again because it thinks that my phone is already rooted. I'm going to do some light battery tests before trying to root again, this time with purple drake.
Maybe i might restore the slimkat alpha and hide there until this gets sorted out
I decided not to update to fear my bootloader/root so I tried to extract this with file manager and kept crashing. I can only post the name of the file but above users are correct contains 10m from 10c hopefully devs can find out exactly what's in the update. b1847cae892006ffa11c6822a408fe8528142a54.D85110c_00-D85110m_00_update.zip

I believe so yes. But if you are truly bootlooping, I don't believe you have many (if any) other choices than wiping clean and starting fresh.
I'm all stock so I upgraded.
It is in fact D85110m
I've only had it up and running for a few minutes and I already noticed two things.
- There is a slider feature added to the lock screen to instantly open the camera.
- I didn't think the phone was sluggish or laggy out of the box but I immediately could tell it runs smoother now with transitions between screens/apps. e.g. There used to be a bit of lag when opening the Recent Apps. Not anymore.
We'll see how it goes.
The IR blaster works better for me now. I guess the update made it more powerful somehow.
if you have twrp installed or have modified /system you should not take this OTA. if on twrp things will get weird(as evidenced above..) and if removing/modding any default files in /system the zip will most likely fail.. as it checks for all original files first before the OTA update gets patched in.
as for the twrp issue.. I can only assume that it's due to the update/phone expecting stock recovery... and not getting it. there are flags set in the phone that tell the phone what mode to boot into... since you dont have stock recovery the phone is confused. check out this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696
the fota and misc partitions are tied to this... try to zero out fota first. if that alone doesnt let you out of twrp... you may need to wipe misc. be sure to backup any partition to computer(dont just save on phone sdcard.. never know when it could get wiped..) before erasing anything.
as for this update(10m)... anyone taking it should be careful that the bootloader/downgrades have not been locked/blocked. I'll be waiting for others to take that risk first before even considering taking the ota.
*update* can confirm update is safe.. bootloader is not locked.. still rootable.
as for root... I doubt purple drake is blocked.. but is possible. I'm very sure Stump is still available as an option(tho app may need update).
if you got the update and dont want to take it.. and want the notification gone you should be able to use a file explorer to delete the update zip from the the /cache directory... as well as rename the LGFOTA.apk file in /system to LGFOTA.apk.bak.
I can also confirm that disabling OTA updates in the hidden menu works. the moment I set it back to "on" (i set mine to off day 1) and rebooted the update came in.
d851 hidden menu > wlan test > ota setting > off > reboot (if you have been notified of an available update do NOT reboot until you have deleted the ota zip first)

Security update with root

So, I'm new to rooting and this is my first Nexus device.
I'm loving it and all the options but now I'm getting a notification to update.
I see all the forums about hooking it up to a computer and using commands to do it all and then rerooting.
I was looking for an easier way.
I bought a Nexus 5 to play with because I liked this one so much and when OTAs came up, it would let me download them and reboot into CWM recovery and ask if I want to flash the ZIP.
This one just boots into TWRP (No CWM for 5x) and does nothing.
I found the update as a zip here:
<https://gist.github.com/jduck/744a6c8a9042e9c792b7>
My question is: can I just download it and use TWRP to flash it or is the sequence of commands on a computer the only way to do it?
Thank you in advance for your help and I apologize for my ignorance.
Gotta start somewhere though, right?
Hi !
I personnaly use NRT from Wugfresh for my Nexus 5x and my Nexus 7 2013, both rooted.
In "model type", select Nexus 5x and your build.
In "Restore/upgrade/downgrade", select "device is on/normal", then click "Flash stock+ unroot".
Select the build you want to install, it can dl and extract it for you, and select "No Wipe Mode" in order to keep your data and apps. (don't try to put your ota file here)
Go through the steps, and in the end, hit "Root" to root again.
I know there are others methods to apply just the OTA with command lines, but I never did it cause I never took the time to learn. I should do it, maybe it's faster with command lines.
Anyway this works, even if it takes a little time, and it is kind of automatic. But I strongly recommend you try both method to find what suits you most. Or wait for someone else to reply so you'll have more points of view !
Have fun with your N5x !
I like the idea of that.
Does it reinstall the superuser app automatically?
If so, which one?
And does it redo custom recovery?
And which one for that?
Sorry for all the questions but I purchased SuperSU and I don't want it to automatically download a different one and have to go through the steps to change a superuser app.

I have Xposed installed.
I unmarked all modules, rebooted, and tried again but to no avail.
Other than Xposed, no mods to the kernel.

Are you using flashfire v0.28?
Xposed modifies the system so while you maybe able to get the ota it can prevent you from installing them even with flashfire.
Go to the flashfire thread and see if this is a problem with the app or because or xposed (most likely answer).
Otherwise find the ota threads and see if you can flash it through recovery (not the N version)
Yeah, it's that version of Flashfire.
I have the update zip but I'm afraid to just flash it.
I was hoping that I'd get some more help here.
Not that I don't appreciate your help.

Thats at the end of my ability to help you with this particular problem, I have only owned a Nexus for 2 months and they are completely diff to Samsung plus I run pure nexus rom, you may just have to use a computer.
And I really appreciate it.
I'll just use a computer and do it.
Don't want to risk trying to flash the zip and bricking but I'm still curious.
Just not curious enough.
Haha.
Got it.
In case anyone needs to know for themselves, I wanted to post it here.

I used that and it worked.
I didn't flash the Xposed zip and had to later on.
Worth it just to add it to the queue to save the time.
Everything else seems to be working fine thus far.
A few settings are changed (TinyCore was turned off and hidden apps in Smart Launcher 3 were unhidden) but that's nothing big.

That is the same manipulation I explained in post 2, but with Flashfire, without using a computer. And full automated, where with nrt you have to factory reset and root later. I'll try it next time ! And yeah, the version of SuperSu is always the latest, and if it is not, it will update via play store (I bought it as well ^^)

This one didn't unroot. Just uninstalled Xposed. Kept all my data and stuff. Apps stayed signed in even. I was afraid because I heard "factory reset" in yours. Or something to that nature. The only thing I'm having problems with now is Tapatalk told me to check my adblock settings and won't load anything. I'll have to look up what's wrong with it. Other than that, it's doing all right.
You are right and wrong, it unroots but reroots in the process. Same I did when I used nrt. And as i didn't wipe data, apps stayed sign in as Well.
But i tried flashfire on my nexus 7 and I it is way more useful and faster than nrt. I am adopting it !

Verizon system update

I just received a notice of a system update from Verizon. In my old rooted days I simply would have ignored it. However without having to worry about breaking root, I decided to take the update right away.
However, before diving in, I did take the following precaution: I exported my LG package disabler selections and enabled all disabled items.
Here is more information regarding the update from the Verizon website: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/lg-v30-update/
I too just ran the update. However I did not re-enable the 51 packages I had disabled. The update ran without incident and when I checked, the disabled packages were still disabled. Just sharing my experience.

Yes, it isn't necessary to re-enable everything just to take an update. The components, while updated, still remain disabled.

In my case, I deleted stuff using adb debloat procedure, so the files were physically not present, and the update went just fine.

The files are never actually removed, which is why the update still works. They are only uninstalled for the user - but they are still present on the device.

Oh, interesting. So there's the factory image, a master copy unpacked, then a copy for each user profile?
When I began and finished the adb removal process, I checked memory and made some notes (which I now can't locate, sorry), and noticed that I gained a couple hundred MBs of internal storage as reported by the System > Storage menu.

Freezing and lags after last update

I've been getting screen freezes that last a few seconds and lags that got much worse after the last update. Is anyone else having this problem? Any solutions?
I had this, so at the weekend I went and completely flashed the image via adb and it's fixed most of my issues. I have noticed that Facebook is constantly slow to load(compared to my Galaxy S6) so i've left an app review - and uninstallled, now using FB lite for the time being
No issues here, but manually updated to March using the factory image followed by root via fastboot twrp.
You need to add more detail to your posts as there are lots of questions left unanswered that could be important.
Eg
Do you mean the march security update? Was it updated OTA or manually? If manually, which image and what method? Rooted? Modded? Have you checked your apps for any that might be suspicious or just really old? Have you backed up and reset? Etc etc.
Good luck

For me, I was on February before I flashed the latest build at the weekend.
I had various apps installed, could have been anything. Most of the experimental apps were things like the modified camera app which allows the Pixel XL 2 HDR+ etc...
Personally, I think flashing a device over ADB is a necessity sometimes - I had tried clearing the app cache, with this a/b boot partitions, there's no clear cache in bootloader - so took the plunge, glad I did because my battery and overall performance of the phone has improved.
I just forgot to lock the bootloader, which means when I came to pay for my train this morning I couldn't set up Android Pay.

Yeah, I get that, but I don't root anymore. I don't fully see the need to - and it feels like it's more hassle these days.
Maybe when I get some spare time I will consider rooting again. I'll just lock the bootloader via fastboot and adb tonight.

A newbie who want's to get into Android P

Hello guys!
Here I am, seeing tons of reviews on Android P and I actually like it quite alot but I have some few question which I hope I can get through this thread hopefully! I would appreciate it
1. How can I back up everything on my current Oreo where in case something happens I can just go back?
2. If I update through the phone instantly, will all my contacts, apps and all other information still be there?
Basically i'm mostly scared about getting my data wiped since I have everything flawless made, with contacts, settings and so on, I do hope maybe you have more tip for me than I asked for - I assume you know which point i'm trying to head aswell!
Would appreciate everything!

If you are rooted, make a twrp backup of your data partition and save it to your pc. If you are willing, you can then fastboot the DP4 with the -w flag removed. This should put you on DP4 with all your apps and data in tact. However, beware of bugs! If you choose to go back to 8.1 Oreo, you'll need to clean fastboot the latest 8.1, which will wipe your phone. However, after you install twrp and root again, you can then restore your data backup via twrp which should put you back to where you started.
If you are not rooted, you'll need to sign up for the beta release, which will give you an OTA that will wipe your phone, and you'll be on a clean install of DP4. If you opt out of the beta, you'll get another OTA that'll wipe your phone and put you back on 8.1.
And there ya go. Piece of cake

Click the "Try" button
There you go, you can now access the system UI tuner again, without having to install nova launcher
I tried this and worked flawless!

If you are not rooted, you'll need to sign up for the beta release, which will give you an OTA that will wipe your phone, and you'll be on a clean install of DP4.

Sorry but that's incorrect. DP4 OTA does NOT wipe your phone. Leaving beta program to go back to Oreo does.
