Question Just got the S21 FE 5G, are there any apps I should uninstall/disable or any settings I should change? - Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

Just got the S21 FE 5G and did a factory reset.
Are there any apps I should uninstall/disable or any settings I should change for best performance? This is my first Samsung phone.
Also, I'm going from a non-Samsung phone to this. Should I use Smart Switch or Google Backup?

Hi there.
The most valuable advice I can give you is to go to Settings>Battery and device care>Click on Battery>Scroll down to "Background usage limits">Deep sleeping apps. Add any app that you do not want to run in the background. Those apps that you add will only work when you open them. Keep in mind that they will not receive updates or notifications.
Also, if you want the phone to feel snappier, go to Settings>About phone>Software Information>Tap 7 times on Build Number to enable developer settings. After that go to Settings> Developer options and turn off "Window animation scale", "Transition animation scale" and "Animator duration scale".
As for backup, I have no idea what to recommend. I usually just copy everything to a SSD and paste it to the new phone ). Contacts and conversations usually take care of themselves as they are synced with my google account.

Thanks, I did all of the above

I've had good results using the following guide. I have not encountered a single issue at all since doing an 'extreme debloat' a few months ago.

I did not do any of the 'ADB Optimisations.' I mainly focused on the 'Removing Bloatware' section. It's possible to restore any component - if the need arises. It's also mentioned that you should 'restore all apps before updating,' but I have not done so and encountered no problems.

I also agree with turning off the adaptive battery from that guide. You can also turn on the enhanced processing while at it. I am not sure if the battery charge will suffer, but I definetly feel the phone is more responsive. Especially when scrolling pages.

Would putting the bloatware in "deep sleep" accomplish the same thing as disabling?

Yes, but you can't put all the apps in deep sleep, you can disable some of them only through adb.

@lost101, thanks for your help!
I've done the following:
In "Systems" tab in AppControl
- Load "Disabled" preset and apply disable while checking "delete data & cache".
- Load "Deleted" preset and apply uninstall while checking "delete data & cache".
In "Uninstall" tab in AppControl
- Load "Disabled" preset and apply Disable while checking "delete data & cache".
- Load "Kept" preset and click Restore.

In my case - as I previously suggested - 'Dolby Atmos' was missing after doing the above; however I was easily able to restore that functionality with AppControl.

Well, I mentioned you can restore anything that you notice is missing and need. You can restore any apk in AppControl. I believe the SoundAlive service restores Dolby Atmos support. Search for it among the deleted items in AppControl, right-click and restore.
I've attached the apk if you are missing the file.

The worst thing I hate about not having root

Honestly, this stock rom is pretty ****ing good. I am actually able to disable 80% of the bloat nonsense, and its smooth as hell out of the box. It was able to connect to my old, obscure TV in two tries (took 20 seconds) and everything is amazing. You know what I hate the most? Not having adaway. Thats saying something. Good job HTC and verizon for not making another droid DNA stock rom disaster.
I'm enjoying the stock Rom also. It's snappy as hell. Quick question, what is the best way to disable the vzw bloat. Thanks.
A lot of people don't know about it, but if you go to Settings>Apps and then All Apps, you can click an app and there's an option to disable a lot of them, which as far as I can tell is basically like uninstalling them except the app is still on your phone. It doesn't run or show in the tray though. Really awesome feature, debloating a phone without root is sweet.

Do not forget to get access to the "Developer Options" menu in Settings. There are some really amazing options in there, such as Force GPU Rendering, Force 4x MSAA, control over the phone animations, and one of my personal favorites - "Background Process Limit"
To access the "Developer Options" go to Settings > About > Software > More > Build Number - Once you get to "Build Number" start tapping in-between to the two lines that contain the Build Number information. After a number of taps you will get a message saying you are x taps to becoming a developer, keep tapping until it tells you that you are a developer. Once you get the notification/popup saying you are a developer, head back to the main menu in settings and look right about "Software Update" and below "Backup & Reset" you should now have "Developer Options". Enjoy the added features.

I wouldn't mind not having root except I can't get helium to actually restore my backups. It says successful, but no game data is restored.
Yeah, and I definitely agree about the ads. God, I forgot how bad they can be.
What's wrong with the DNA stock ROM? Kids have unrooted stock DNA's and it seems fine when I have to fix or update something for them.

It was my old phone. Thankfully it came with the 1.15 rom instead of 2.04(before moonshine). The stock rom was bloated to all hell. Sense 4 was ugly and stupid, and the battery life was horrendous. When I put carbon on there, it was blazing fast and I got about 2+ days of battery life with 2+ hours of screen on time.

There is no reason to force msaa with the resolution so high and forcing gpu rendering will probably decrease your battery life for no performance gains.

Besides being annoyed by ads and not being able to disable certain stuff, I am annoyed at not being able to change my DPI. I had it lowered to 200 on my S3 and Note 2. I hate big, fat icons and want to be able to fit more stuff on the screen.
I would also really like to be able to install Cerberus and some other key root apps.
I'm really hoping this thing gets cracked soon so I can get back to Cyanogenmod.
Has anyone figured out how to get the wifi status notifcation out of the windowshade? I don't need to be constantly notified of my wifi status.

Installed 8.1 RTM, Avatar vanished!

Pretty simple really, I successfully installed 8.1 RTM, everything's working just fine but my gamer avatar on the Xbox live app seems to have vanished since 8.1 was installed! All my gamer tag details are there and correct but there just a space where an avatar should be..
Can anyone tell me how to get it back please?

Ook, I found it and installed it but this time, the entire panel with the avatar is missing!
The 'old' one had the light coloured panel next to the Gamer tag / edit profile / share profile etc..
Not sure what to do now.
Close the app (drag from the top of screen and throw the app off of the bottom of the screen) and re-launch it. Verify that your WiFi is working and that the app says that you're signed in. Check that you can access your account from Settings->Account in the app. Try toggling avatars off and then on again under Settings->Preferences. Reboot the tablet. Try uninstalling and re-installing the app one more time. Try refreshing Windows (under Settings->Change PC Settings->Update and recovery->Recovery). Give it a day or so to see if it resolves itself.
If all else fails, consider re-installing Windows, either by choosing Settings->Change PC Settings->Update and recovery->Recovery->"Remove everything and re-install Windows" or running Setup.exe again and, this time, choosing "Keep Nothing." A couple of other people have reported similar minor issues after upgrading that clean installations resolved.

We're talking about the "Games" app, the one with the green tile with the icon of an Xbox controller, right? I have a Preferences option there (just double-checked). I'm just using the version that came with 8.1. Maybe it and the store app aren't the same version.
I refreshed the OS install and everything's back to normal. I guess the games app in the store is an older version!
One thing I noticed was that there's no way to edit the avatar. I was sure that read a review of 8.1 that showed someone editing their avatar on the tablet but I guess I must have been mistaken.

[Manual Fix] v2.1.5i Notification auto clear, Apps not autostarting

I've chosen to post this fix that I have created here to bring more attention to XDA, instead of posting directly on OPPO Forums. This is because OPPO staff have clearly stated with their latest release of ColorOS v2.1.5i that it will be their last.
The mods also didn't reply when I offered to share with them this, so.. That's the situation there.
For those who still prefer ColorOS while Project Spectrum is being developed (released today but not all ColorOS features included), follow the steps below.
After 3 weeks if testing.. Here is the fix!!
Issue:
After some usage, you notice app notifications appear, then disappear immediately.
After reboot, this behavior persists. Additionally, your startup apps do not autostart anymore.
Apps in the background are automatically closed after switching to another app.
Manual Fix:
There is a problematic folder and file that needs to be removed. Use a file manager such as Solid Explorer to browse to the files and remove them.
/data/data_bpm - remove folder and files
/data/system/appops.xml - remove file
Reboot and all is fixed.
Persistent notifications hidden using notification centre reappears. Just enable and disable the notification through the notifications control and it will go away.
Tasker is recommended to create a reboot button. The task sequence for reboot would be to remove the problematic files and folder before reboot. It automates the process making your life easier.
If this helps you..
Please spread the word and link back to this thread on xda. ?
Thanks for the fix, dude, very much appreciated
Well done! Even though I am not using COS anymore, I really do appreciate your post!
Thank you for the fix! Cheers
Thanks for the share. Will try this. In the meantime, anyone still having notification problems, try greenify. The fix is in experimental features but you will need to pay for this feature. I've decided to settle on 2.1.5i. Will move to asop when it is more stable. Cheers.

Could you elaborate more? I'm also using greenify but issue still persists.
You need xposed framework for it to work. In settings, go to experimental features. Tick telephony wake up, don't remove notifications and gcm push. I have all notifications coming in on time. Gmail default app seems to be the only problem app so I use default email app instead. P.s. I tried deleting the first folder and files but it shows up again after reboot. The second file is gone. Is this correct? Thanks.

And yes, files are recreated. I would suggest adding the deletion to a task sequence for reboot to automate the procedure.

Regarding notifications, I've also put every messaging app and email in white list and auto run management. Funny why it's not working out for you. I get reply notifications from youtube too, without adding it. Not sure about how to do the task sequence but everything seems to be fine now.

You can use Tasker to create a reboot button or profile.
But I suggest using other mm roms.. Coloros pales in comparison after I switched.
If you're rooted, removing Security Centre would stop a lot of issues....
These Chinese phones are over the top on built in security apps and I assume because China has a lot of aggressive adware.
Xposed and MinMinGaurd, plus AdBlock Browser fixes a lot of issues.
@RobboW Do you really remove the Security Centre?
I kept it but it is annoying at times. You have to go in and check so many settings if you install anything you want to run at boot or start up itself. I even had to move a couple of apps into system instead of user so they would run reliably.
Does Xposed trouble with Color OS?
Deleting the file and folder seems to do the job, but not 100%. Yesterday I noticed Waze was closing after switching to another app, so I checked and they were back in the data folder. Deleted them again, but they seem to reappear after every reboot? Anyway, now waze seems to work and does not close with the "new" fikes.
Another solution to the problem is to convert apps that have problems to system apps. It worked for me with Chrome (wasn't getting Facebook notifications at all in chrome), Google Calendar, and Titanium Backup (batch actions would not complete because the app would close when not in foreground).
Do you need to be rooted to locate/delete the two files? I can't seem to find it on my device.

Auto-Force 90hz Using Tasker; Select your apps and enjoy

First thanks to everyone for their help on this small project.
This task will strictly run at 60hz, but once you select the apps you want it to run 90hz on it will jump up to 90. This will revert back once you exit the app you've enabled 90 on
Directions
-Once the profile is imported make sure it is enabled.
-Turn off smooth display
-To choose your apps tap on the profiles name -> tap choose apps.
-Once you have selected your apps make sure you save the changes by tapping the check on the top of your screen.

Yes it works, even on Android 11, I can confirm that. (Enable show refresh rate in developer settings, there you can monitor it the best) Make sure Tasker can access root.
Will this work with custom rom's or only the "stock" ones? Ie what is it changing to set the display rate? I have a tasker profile setup for this that uses Global `oneplus_screen_refresh_rate` but not sure that's gonna be available on an aosp related rom.
*update* Works great on my custom Android 11 rom on a oneplus 7 pro. Thanks Kevtrejo37

Nope, not at all. I've checked snd re-checked the calendar app's permissions and notification settings and they're fine.
Under the optimize app list, the calendar app doesn't even show up
Stock OOS 13? Some things you could try:
- Making sure your sync is on
- Making sure calendar is being synced within sync settings
- Updating your calendar app to a beta (apkmirror)
- Clearing cache and data from calendar app
- Allowing background data on calendar app

I did all of the above, but did not find a beta for the Google calendar. I am on the latest release of the app. This is really weird and frustration. I opened a ticket (whatever that means) within the oneplus community page.
No problem, sorry those didn't fix it and hope you get it working. If you do get it fixed, post how you got it fixed if you wouldn't mind!

will do
I even tried to delete the app using titanium backup with the hope of reinstalling it, but TB could not delete it because it couldn't find the apk. Is it because it's a system file and it resides somewhere else that TB is not looking?
Might be. I try not to use Titanium Backup as it's had issues with reliability, especially with the newest releases of Android. Did you back it up before uninstalling? If so, there should be some place on your phone it's stored. Maybe try looking at where Titanium Backup stores backups

I was not able to uninstall it since TB couldn't locate the apk. TB has a way to force-remove a system app using a built-in exploit, but I didn't want to experiment with that.
I wonder if I can navigate to a directory and simply remove the apk. I will search that option.
Oh, I understand what you're saying now. Yeah, not too sure about that, but hopefully OnePlus can help
An update. And a new year
OP tech support told me to factory reset the device, which makes me cringe, sort of. I'm rooted and this is my daily phone, so I don't want to mess with that.
I clarify that my calendar event reminders work fine. It is the REMINDERS subfuction within the calendar app that do not remind at all.
I have found that if you have past reminders that aren't marked "done", it can stop future ones from triggering

Thank you Sam and that's an excellent point. Reminders not marked as "done" continue to roll on in the calendar to present day.
I checked and went as far back as January of 2021, and all of mine are marked as done.
