Question Does the Pixel 6 Pro really gets scratches that much? - Google Pixel 6 Pro

Hello,
I want to buy a P6P, but the only thing holding me back are the Reddit complaints and some YT reviews stating that the device gets scratched very very easily due to the GGV used on it? Can you share your experience.
Thanks.

Welcome to XDA, @dimitarfive.
I haven't noticed since I have an OtterBox Defender case and Whitestone Dome tempered glass screen protector. Same with my wife's P6P.

I don't think it scratches any more than other phones. I use a flip case without screen protector. I do have 2 or 3 miniscule scratches that are only visible under certain angles or lighting conditions. I would say that it all depends on how you protect and treat your phone.

Sand scratches all glass. Use a case and a screen protector. My 2.5 yo N10+ has no scratches or damage in spite of more then a few drops because it's always in a case with a screen protector. The case should have slightly raised guards on all sides of the display to help prevent contact on face plants.
A good case lessens high G loading that can damage internal components like BGA chipsets during an impact.

I've never used a screen protector, since the beginning of smartphones (Dell Streak 5). I keep my phone in a slim case, and it goes into a padded belt clip case (turtleback brand). My phone is used constanly, and I've never scratched one. But, I also don't go to the beach, or other functions that would allow dirt/rock/debris to get to the screen.
I know accidents can happen, but I try to treat my phones as the EXPENSIVE things they are.

I live the desert. Just for giggles I finally took the screen protector off my old S4+, it felt good.
Within 4 months in spite off being careful it had a couple scratches. One grain of sand is all it takes... and sand is found everywhere.
Any pocket grit can mar glass.
Your dry fingers are also abrasive to glass and will gradually wear it down over time.

No screen protector, never used them. Day one purchase and no scratches. I don't think it scratches any easier than any other phone.

6 month old P6P here and it is scratch free.

Somehow, I got a scratch on my screen. It's a small ding and it doesn't bother me, but it's there. I don't use screen protectors, don't like them.

No screen protector but got a case since day 1 in October. No visible scratches.

I noticed micro scratches within the first week - so I am using a screen protection for the first time in my life.

That's an interesting topic.
And, factually, it is true that the Pixel 6 Pro scratches quite easily, compared to previous models.
Now, why is that?
The reason is the so-called Gorilla Glass Victus. It's a new product by Corning - a product that is in use in a number of phones, including IPhones. And that's where the interesting part comes in. All Gorilla Glass Victus phones are more prone to (micro) scratches.
Meaning that the Pixel 6 Pro does scratch more easily compared to previous models, but so does any other flagship with Victus glass, currently.
You might ask yourself: Why did Corning release a product that is prone to get scratched more easily? Well, the answer is quite simple: Drop protection. Gorilla Glass Victus is harder to scratch on a deeper level and is much more resistant to drop damage, at least in theory, according to Corning.
In the end, you will be best advised to get a screen protector on. The Pixel 6 Pro is a good phone. I can't call it great, since battery life and reception could both be much better, but you will have a hard time to find a package this good (awesome camera, many software features, timely updates, good root support (Samsung hates root), decent hardware quality, good hardware values on paper) somewhere else. The Pixel 6 Pro is a phone that I can recommend, but it's still a phone that can improve in a number of areas, but so does any other phone.
Considering that the P6a is on the horizon, and it's usually a much better bang for the buck, you might be best advised though, to hold out and wait for that phone (as far as I know, the P6a will be revealed in May).

Which phone do you call good?

Scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7 just like all other glass phones...
;-)

In my experience, yeah, it scratches really easily.
I've never used screen protectors before, and I baby my phones, but within the first two weeks I had multiple scratches on the screen to the point where I had to put on a screen protector just for my sanity. I'm seriously considering getting the screen replaced entirely because of it.

Same happened to me, I never used screen protectors in the past and I could go several months to a year with very minor scuffs. With the P6 I got a heavy scratch after 3 days.

If you're worried about scratches and want peace of mind just use a screen protector. Glass is glass and will always scratch under the right conditions no matter how much GG hypes it up.

I think the oleophobic coating could be better but scratches are not a problem for me. My release pixel was 4 months without a screen protector and it looked fine, same for my new device after 2 months.

Had mine since mid January, no screen protector...not one scratch. I use a turtleback case. I've never had a screen protector on any of my smartphones. Last phone I had with a protector, was one of those old PDA type phones.

My back glass is COVERED in scuffs and scratches. I'm glad I got the white model because you really do have to inspect it properly to see it

Are tempered glass screen protectors necessary?

Hello. I just ordered a OnePlus one, and now I'm looking for the accessories.
I actually have a Note 2 with a tempered glass screen protector. The other day I've met a friend that works on the construction and he died me his Note 2 that he had been using since 6 months ago, and the screen was perfect, without a mark. He sweared that had the phone dropped several times and the screen was, as I said, perfect.
It made me think that maybe the OPO with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3, maybe it doesn't make much sense to use one of these screen protector.
What to you guys think?
Not necessary but if you want the extra protection go for it.
I personally don't use screen protectors but its ultimately up to you.
I don't usually run screen protectors but I'm glad I got one for my OPO.
After a few days of owning it I noticed some super light scratches on the bottom of the screen. This was during the brand new period of owning it and the screen had not touched anything except empty pants pocket, my fingers, and t-shirt for cleaning.
Thankfully my ozrly tempered glass protector showed up the next day, and I've been running that since. Pretty happy with it.
Tl;dr: I'd run a lot of phones naked, but not this one.
Precisely, as this is a cheap phone, and also has gorilla glass,I don't see the necessity as in a Note 3 or an iPhone...
as cheap as it is at $360, a $6 protector won't hurt your wallet

The phone is inexpensive but difficult to repair or replace. I see someone doesn't know the difference between the cost of something and how valuable something is.
I always keep my phone in a dedicated empty pocket but it always gets the random light scratch over its lifetime. A good $15-$25 glass screen keeps it looking new. That way when you pull out your device you don't look like some kind of a hobo.
The Ringke Fusion comes with a screen protector free of charge when you buy the case by the way.

All you need to scratch your screen is a grain of sand.
Are glass protectors mandatory? of corse not, otherwise they would come in the package with the phone. That said, i firmly beleave they are a "must have" for any phone, as you will regret not having one as soon as you get a scratch on it. for my xperia z2 it lasted 1 week 'till i regreted not having one, when for the first time I went "YOLO" on a phone.
You don't need a 30 dollar glass protector, I've had all kinds of brands and prices and all i have to say is that they are all the same, the only thing I insist on is rounded edges, so you don't feel it as much.
I'm on my second OPO, since I sold my first one after it fell face down, slightly tilted up, since it damaged the chrome ring on the top. When it fell, along with the dent, the glass screen protector was shattered on the top left. If you did not realize this so far, the only reason my "amazing gorilla glass" did not shatter aswell is that the protector took the hit for it (shattering to spread the energy). Gorilla glass is made to take scratches, not falls.
Finally, it is up to you. Do i think you do not need a normal plastic screen protector? well, you don't. Do you need a GLASS screen protector? after my experience my opinion can only be yes. I am currently waiting for a new one and have a crappy regular protector on.
Ultimate shield has proven to be a very good, not very expensive, and reliable seller for every phone I got it for (htc one m7, note 3, xperia z2, OPO)
Not absolutely necessary, but you really can scratch the phone screen.
Plastic screen protectors scratch really easy because they are plastic. So even if it protects the screen they end up looking like crap. That's where tempered glass protectors shine, it protects the screen and still looks really nice (albeit at a higher cost).
Tempered glass screen protector is never necessary until...well, until you drop the phone once on a wrong surface...
Take your risk.
I never really believed in tempered glass, until I saw more videos on these types of ion-reinforced glass. They are definitely not indestructible. As somebody above stated, all it takes is a grain of sand for there to be a micro-scratch on the screen. It's from these nearly-invisible weaknesses that the screen will crack when exposed to force when dropped. I believe the reason is that Gorilla Glass 3 is around 6-7 on the Moh's hardness scale, which is harder than metal, which is why keys and knives don't scratch it, but not as hard as sand or rocks.
So in other words, some type of protector will prevent these micro-scratches. The question is then, plastic or tempered glass? I've always used plastic on the last dozen or so phones and tablets I've had, but even the best plastic one (Belkin) still definitely felt plastic in their friction, it wasn't as smooth as glass, and a year later, there are small scratches in it.
Yes, it's true that the OPO is cheap enough that if you smash it, it's not a huge deal, and yes, there was a screen replacement kit I saw in another thread that was $110 or something, BUT it's the time and hassle. For me, slapping on a $15 glass protector (which I found easier to apply than previous plastic protectors), is worth it.
With the OPO, I decided to try a Nilkin tempered glass protector, and it feels as smooth as the original glass, which is great if you're a power user that does alot of quick inputs. It also seems to be very resistant to scratches so far, but I don't believe it's the 9H that they stated in the ad. The downside is that it's definitely noticeably thick, you can see it from the side, and you can feel the edges next to the cutouts.
PS. I'm no expert, so take it as you will.
My screen scrathed its hairline but it did i now have a thin glass screen protector .25mm thick very thin and looks amazing $6 was shipped from china less then week

I own the iphone 5 and it too like all phones are prone to light surface scratches. Better put some protection on it

How bad is the absence of Gorilla glass?

Ok, question to all who have this phone some time now, how bad is the screen quality when it comes to getting scratches in day to day usage. Knowing that there is no Gorilla glass to protect the device it is important for me to know how bad this really is as I don't like to use screen protectors. Gsmarena review of MI5S is a bit scarry "The Mi 5s acquired lots of big scratches on top of its display just in the week we had it for a review. We suggest that you apply a screen protector on it as soon as you take the phone out of its box."
Do you have a similar experiance?
As I only had one Scratch on my phones in the last 10 years, I would say it's no issue
Then again, some 4-5 years ago, no phone had gorilla glass and they also never really got scratches (when I used them). So for me this GorillaGlass is mostly marketing.
I do use some kind of bag or cover for all my phones though and I work in an office environment (no sand or similar comes into my pockets with the phone). I don't use a screenprotector.
I actually really like the very smooth feel of the glass on the Mi 5s, my finger never glided so easily on glass in years.
Gorilla or not - it simply doesn't matter and it's just a marketing. Hardness scale tells true story and even "non-gorilla" smartphones' screens score the same in hardness scale. I've had Redmi 3 previously (also no gorilla) for more than a year without any protectors and guess what? Not a single scratch on screen. Same situation with Mi5s - have it for over a month, no protection, screen is still like new. Keep in mind that even Gorilla Glass 10 () will get scratched by sand - it's physics and no glass will ever become harder than corundum. (sand)
Thank you guys. I wasn't too much concerned about the screen before reading that review on Gsmarena as they didn't give much detail what they were doing with the phone to get scratches so quickly. But it seems to me they must have abused it quite badly to get scratches after just one week of use. I agree that hardness scale is all it matters but on that review they gave the impression like the screen is made of cheese. Great to know the opinion of ordinary users, I'm looking forward to get the phone in my hands now.
I have a S7 Edge which was kept only in cotton pockets, and sustained deep scratches at the middle of the screen within days of purchase. Needless to say I don't carry anything in my pockets but phone, let alone sand particles. Mi5S is now getting the same treatment, and is still scratch free for weeks now. Gorilla glass is a scam.

General opinions on Screen Protectors for the Pixel 2 XL?

Considering this is a general question and nothing to do with an in depth discussion on accessories, I decided to post this here. My whole life I've used screen protectors on phones. In recent years I've switched over to tempered glass.
Given the current state of tempered glass screen protectors for our devices, I haven't had the best of luck. Every one I've received from several different companies has either had a nasty rainbow hue, or dust get under the screen protector (due to adhesive only being on the edges). I know there's been some new tempered glass protectors released recently, but considering I paid for protection plan, I don't feel warranted to drop $50+ on a screen protector.
I have the Google Protection plan. I also plan on RMA'ing my device one day down the line due to a couple of issues I'm having, but I decided to wait as I am not completely bothered by them for now.
I'm honestly debating going screen protector'less, I do use a case, and will never consider removing that.
I feel if I ever do get some scratches, it wouldn't even matter considering I plan on RMA'ing the device eventually anyway. What are your thoughts?
Haven't worried about it on the last three phones. Never had a problem or scratch. And my phone sits on my handlebars on my motorcycle for most of the summer.

Yeah, old habits die hard. Don't use a screen protector. They interfere with the phone, look like crap, don't fit right (curved glass), cause touch issues and are outrageously expensive. You'll be just fine with a decent case with a good lip unless you intentionally put coins, keys or other hard metallic objects in the same pocket. My .02 cents.
I don't use one for a couple of years now and never had a scratch.
Ever since curved glass, I started using wet apply screen protectors.
It "molds" to the sides, accommodating the curves and at times it's hard to tell there's something on my phone.
There is a bit of grain when viewing something with a white background, and you don't get the feel of glass, but both these things are very minor to me and wont stop me from continue using it.
If this wet application protector didn't exist, I'd probably go without one as well. I've never done that before but I can't tolerate the insanely poor quality tgsps that work horribly with the curves especially.

So, this covers the WHOLE screen. I like that. I just wish they made a matte one...
Thanks!
It depends on your phone handling, case & usage! For me, I've not needed one on my devices!
I have not used one since I had a galaxy s2, when Nexus 4 was released never had a scratch on a phone screen since. I did drop a Samsung tablet with a pen under when I was walking at good pace and it landed beneath it and cracked screen. It was between tile floor and the screen.
If you want to protect your screen from cracks you need a case that has a small lip that would prevent glass from hitting ground. The curved glass might be more prone to crack if it lands on a part.
Whitestone dome glass, its been proven to work across several devices with these screen types.
There is another one now with similar tech but I can't remember the name.

That's the one I was referring to at the $50-60 price point. I'm sure it's as close to perfect as possible, but at $50+ I'd rather pay the $99 deductible to get a full phone replacement considering I have the preferred plan

If it's only scratches... Once. Right before I re-sell my device because of the current defects I have, lol.
Then again, I wouldn't even have to pay the deductible for defects. Only if i break the screen or drown the phone in water which hopefully neither of those happen.
I got THIS one from Skinomi.
It doesn't interfere with any device functions or the camera, and is really heavy duty, but is not glass.
I've found these are very good for screen protection in rough environments. I test military weaponry and combat vehicles so I am outside, in the desert 80% of the time, so I've used screen protectors for years.
If your lifestyle isn't adverse to display surfaces, you could probably do without.
But on a $900 device, with my lifestyle, and job environment; I'll deal with a slightly ugly looking screen protector which has saved my device many times on random drops
This problem with the Pixel 2 XL is the curved screen. I haven't tried the glass and most have poor reviews and appear difficult to get the edges to adhere.
Even the Skinomi, that are usually great protectors, had a little difficulty sticking to one of the corners of my 2 XL.
tl;dr
If your day to day lifestyle doesn't place your device in danger (drops, contact with hard objects, abusive conditions, etc.), you're probably good without a screen protector. If not, it's cheap insurance for random drops and rough handling.
I bought a Spigen glass.tr nano liquid thingy, which is some sort of SiO2 compound that you have to apply just like you use any glass wipe tissue. I never dared to start smashing it with my keys, but it should be adequate to help the screen intact & scratch-free from the smears & dust in your pockets. I actually applied it to the glass of the back camera as well, and the picture quality didn't decrease. The feel of touching the screen changed though, it feels a bit more rugged and less slippery, compared to a Galaxy S8 without any screen protection.
https://www.amazon.de/Displayschutzfolie-Spigen-Kompatibel-Installation-000GL21813/dp/B0774116F5/
Grab the InvisShield from SGFresh. It's great for the 2 XL. A little tedious to install, but great protection.

How does the glass hold up?

I've have my 2XL since October 21. I've had ZAGG glass curve on it since nearly day one. I've just cracked my third one. None of the times I've cracked it I've dropped it. Both times I've pulled it out of my pocked and noticed a chip in the middle on the side and it spiders out from there over the next few days. I've had glass protectors on my last couple of phones (S4, Moto X Pure) and never had issues with either of them cracking. Sure I replaced due to wear over time, but never because they broke.
I'm not sending Zagg another $10 for a new one. So I'm wondering how the factory glass holds up. Can I just go naked? Is it just the crappy edge only adhesive on the zagg curve? Looking for other peoples experiences and willing to listen to any advice others may have. I'm going to be pissed scratching up the factory screen and I really don't think I can go back to a "film" type protector.

I've had mine as long as you have. Screen still looks fine without any scratches that I can see. Granted, I take care of my phone, but I don't exactly baby it either. It's been dropped more than a few times, and wound up in my pocket with car keys, and still no bad scratches that I can see. I think if your an average user, and don't work in a construction zone, you'll be fine without a protector :good:

I'd say don't risk it I had my phone since January got Google's screen protector loved it finger prints and smudges where non existent until just a couple weeks ago when I also dropped my phone on the ground and it landed facedown on a rock only the screen protector broke
So I bought a zagg even though a few bad reviews all saying screen breaks too easy I have had this one for a week so far and accedently step on my phone trying to get into the shower did not break my screen so far I'm having no issues except smudges already on day one.

I have given up on screen protectors for this device.
The only ones that cover the entire device are made from plastic/rubber (aka liquid skin) lol. These make no sense, they offer no actual protection to the screen and they feel like crap and look just as bad on the device.
Than you have the tempered glass protectors. You have the option of partial screen coverage, which also ruins the aesthetics of the curved glass. Or you can get the "full coverage" option that claims to have "3d, curved glass". This is by far the worst option available. These manufactures of this garbage even go as far to list serious flaws of their design as selling points in their descriptions. The most glaring examples being, "with Dot Matrix" and "updated adhesive" This is so ridiculous, the "updated adhesive" is just horrible glue that they use on the top and bottom edges of the protector and the "dot matrix" is a full coverage of spaced out semi clear dots that are sold as being added for extra touch sensitivity, when in reality the dots are only added because the screen protector is not actually curved glass, it is flat glass connected to a top and bottom edge made of black plastic. The curved plastic edges are black for one, if they were actually glass that means they painted or tinted the top and bottom edges for no reason other than to have wasted money. And because there are 3 pieces to the protector, with the top and bottom responsible for adhering the protector to the screen, the "dot matrix" is needed because the middle piece is not actually mated to the screen. Any quality screen protector claiming to be tempered glass, does not need a dot matrix and is fully adhered to the screen with a clear silicone adhesive.
in conclusion, the pixel 2 xl has corning gorilla glass 5, this is the best glass currently available on the market. So being as none of the protectors available actually protect against cracked or broken displays, there is no need to waste your time with a screen protector. the only thing that the horrible protectors actually offer is scratch resistance, so unless you keep your phone in your pocket with coins all the time don't bother wasting your time or money on a screen protector.
Had mine without a screen protector since launch, and my screen has noticable scratches, etc.
Don't risk it. Whitestone is pricey $50. But feels like regular screen and removes the worry about damaging this great investment.

+1 on Whitestone
I've had mine since 10/24/2018 and no issues. I haven't ever used screen protectors. I tried on a phone several years ago but after like 3 attempts and still not being able to get it on without air bubbles I gave up. Although, I do have a bumper case that gives it a gap to protect from drops. Between that and the Gorilla Glass I've never had an issue. Plus, if I do have an issue I have the Pixel protect plan to take care of that.

Accessories Screen Protector for OnePlus 11!

Suggest me a good quality screen protector to get for the OnePLus 11 which I'm going to get on 7th Feb!
As always for, a real good quality is glass screen protector from Aliexpress, 2pcs for around 10-15USD, glue and UV light.
I have used cheap chinese glass protectors for my Iphone 12, OP7Pro, OP 8T and always was very happy with them.
The only other and real alternative for me is a synthetic sapphire glass protector for ~100USD. All the other protector between them are pretty much the same in the long run.

Isn't that the UV and glue protector sticks completely like a superglue and it's very hard to remove it, saw some videos about them.
I've seen the Sapphire glass protector it is great but too expensive for me! I've my eyes on Spigen, Gadgetshieldz screen guard, and ESR but I want a user experience so I can buy one for my phone.

Not at all, they are quite easy to remove. At least Mocolo ones.

I believe the screen is exactly the same size? The protector fits perfectly on the screen.

Nice, I'll check out some tempered glass brands, or else I'm going to get a film protector from Gadgetshieldz because the tempered glass on a curved-display phone will break more easily than on a flat-screen phone! I've seen reviews on drop tests where the glass breaks because the case will not fully cover the curved edges.
I don't use screen protector.
After 4 years using a 6T, i just got a very thin line only visible under light and close inspection. Moreover, a 45Kg dummbell fell exactly over the screen phone (it was on the floor) and....crystal clear, not even a single mark or damage/deformation on the screen. ¿The almost invisible scratch? Carrying both phone and keys toguether, or even worse but it's plausible. I also owned the Nexus 4/5 and Moto Z Force and don't remember any scratch, at least no one to be concerned.
It's not the answer to you question but just a suggestion, don't spoil the touch/slide feeling, cleariness, and clean look of a naked screen. Of course you can get one of those stupid pseudo-"tempered glass" 9H (it's actually cheap polymer plastic), ... or a simple plastic one wich will be always shady due to have dozens of fingerprints (it's oil after all) without remedy) and will left a yellowish tint over the surface of the crystal (this is a fact, not my subjective impression).
Oh, i remember my Nexus 4, i also thought screen protector was a must, well after a year, i gor rid of it (the tint left by the plastic was there) and never looked behind.
And now we (I) have a more shadows fae beyond like turning a 799$ high end phone (Apple/samsung/former Huawei/etc consider OP10 not a high end (i don't want to say flagship) a mid range ) in a 206g brick.
Bumper case is another story. Now using the 1+ Sandstone and the same issue as with OP6T again, ****, the slider is almost unreachable to be operated propertly. I have been using a generic silicon case while i was waiting the new case, and slider hole was fine, hey, 1,89$ in AliExpress. I just bought it (the same) from Amazon for 10€, of course returned it with a random excuse when i got the new case. I will probably order half a dozen from Ali just to try.
I wass expecting the horror with ColOrxygenOS, but for the moment i havent suffered a stroke

I've never used screen protectors either. I've got 2 front pockets - one for my keys and one for my phone. It's not that hard. Anything that would actually damage the screen would shred the protector and damage your screen anyway. I've never had any scratches on my screens and a screen protector is not going to save you from an unlucky drop. I really don't see the point.
Stopped counting how many times I dropped my phone and it was saved by a glass screen protector - I would probably say dozens of time and I usually go through 2-3 protectors on each phone in average, depending how long I can live with a look of cracked protector before replacing it.
With typical, accidental drops the additional glass layer absorbs the impact and the phone just bounces of the impact area. In my personal experience for last 10 years with HTC M7, M9, Oneplus 7 Pro, Oneplus 8T and iPhone 12, I have never encountered a drop forceful enough to penetrate the protective layer and damage the actually screen glass under it.
Sure, it is possible but never happened to me when dropping phone from front jacket pocket heights, pants pocket height, going in or out of the car with a phone in the hand, pushing the phone from shelf or the bathroom sink etc.
Last week I removed my uv glass screen protector from OP7Pro that I was preparing for a trade in and it looked perfect and if I would want to trade it locally I would get a slightly better price for a mint condition screen rather than a used one for 5 years.
I've had pretty good luck with film over the years and the ONLY reason I started using them is they don't attract finger prints as bad as glass.

For some reason I started using tempered glass ones for the year I had an iphone 12 pro. I broke like 4 of them, it was ridiculous. I stopped using them after a few months and never did manage to hurt the screen, even though I broke the "protectors" left and right. And I use my phones in industrial applications (Im an industrial maintenance tech), they take some abuse.
Fwiw this phone comes with a film protector already applied out of the box. I haven't removed it yet and it's been fine so far.

Exactly. I'll leave the pre-installed screen protector on until it looks like ****. But when it's time to take it off, I won't replace it. Did the same with my 6T.
I see here people have said the 10 pro screen protectors fit, now that a lot more people have the phone has anyone tried this with any tempered glass ones with success?
Any OnePlus 10 Pro screen protector will work on the 11 since the screen (in physical size) is the same.
I use film protectors for a couple of years now and pretty happy with them
SmartDevil on aliexpress released good film protectors for a fair price

4 days ago I ordered the SmartDevil glass since it seems to be a chinese copy of Whitestone glass with the entire bundle (minus the glue foams for the bracket).
I ordered also 2 no name glass screens on 9th of February but it still in shipping, no idea if it will be delivered.
I was curious about the SmartDevil bundle so we will see how much does it actually helps and what is the quality of the bracket.

Yes, tempered glasses always break often so as I said before a film protector and a case covering the edges of the screen is enough for protection!
