[HELP] How do I root my XT1952-1 (Android 9) - Moto G7 Play Questions & Answers

Hi everyone ,
I wandered for months in this forum but I didn't really find how to root my device. There are some tutorial for the "1952-4" but it's not my device. I really don't want to do risky things flashing wrong files. At this point I don't even know if my model can be rooted.
Here are useful infos :
Device : Moto G7 Play XT1952-1
Firmware : Android 9 (security patch december, 1st 2018)
Build : PPY29.68-28
Bootloader unlocked : YES
At this point, what am I supposed to do ? Is there a TWRP image that would work for sure ?
Thank you.

I managed to root my xt1952-4 but I couldn't use the methods on here as I would have TWRP and Magisk root but would lose wifi. So I decided to install magisk, extract the Boot.img file from the rom and patch it with magisk. I flashed it back using "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and now I have root and working wifi but no recovery.

Interesting, thanks.
I don't know if I can risk doing that on my XT1952-1 though, you never know how it'd behave.
If somebody successfully rooted XT1952-1, please let me know

Root H815 on MM 6.0 V20d?

Hi guys ☺,
I bought today G4 eu model,it came with Marshmallow 6.0 V20d version.
I want to root it because of Greenify and Xposed,to increase the battery time, maybe later to flash some rom but...
There is a lot of topics on this subject,I started to read but I'm lost right now...as far as I saw,I can't root Marshmallow without unlocking the bootloader, only Lollipop, right?
Is it a big trouble to go back from MM to LP?
I'm not new in this flashing and rooting stuff,I had (still have) a Motorola Razr XT910,I flashed it 100 times for sure for 3.5 years but I didn't had to unlock the bootloader (it's impossible anyway) and there's a custom recovery Safestrap, modified Twrp which allows to flash and use 6 different roms, from JB to MM,without changing the kernel...
I will be grateful if someone can point me in the right direction,to give me some useful links etc.
And is there some list which procesess are safe to freeze with TB and which ones I can greenify?
Oh,and the bloatware too...
Sorry if I'm demanding but I want to bring out the best from this phone
Thank you in advance

Hi,
root without unlocking bootloader works only on lollipop, right. Not sure if u can downgrade, but when, u will use "LGUP" tool with the "H81510D.kdz" file. Maybe there exists a pre-rooted kdz to flash.
If u want to root android 6, u need a unlocked bootloader. Rooted Android 5.1.1 or unlock bootloader with rooted android 6.x.x
Ok,I successfully unlocked the bootloader but now I'm stuck with rooting and installing Twrp...
I've downloaded BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160121175247 and TWRP-3.0.0.0-H815+ but there's a lot of metods,which one should I use?
Flash SuperSu+Twrp with stock recovery?
Install Twrp with adb command and then flash SuperSu with Twrp?
Install both with adb command?
I also saw somewhere that I must flash some other kernel that is already rooted...
I just need root and the Xposed for now, help me guys!
Im also Confused..Where can i find rooted kernel?
I already did this Method u said...But I got Boot Loop
Then I revover my phone with Lg Bridge
We need to find this.....I also Had Android MM with V20d

In my case I wasn't able to flash recovery on the stock kernel, I had to flash boot.img unpacked from the custom kernel like SimpleGX and only then I was able to flash recovery and full kernel through it.

the method i followed was-
1. boot into twrp recovery with adb command(you need to have the twrp.img file in PC and also copy it in internal memory of your phone with SU)
2. flash systemless root with twrp
3. reboot
4. install flashify
5.flash twrp.img from your phone.
6. done
but there aren't as much benefits of rooting as any other phone. viper4android doesn't work. spirit fm doesn't work. xposed doesn't work properly.(these 3 were the main reasons for which i rooted)

I didn't know i could flash something other than .zip files with twrp.
As for viper4android i tried normal way, flashed it with twrp, flashed extreme music mod with v4a fix. None seem to work. The drivers never get installed.
Xposed i haven't tried. I was in process of getting more information about it by reading various threads. But all seem to point to problems like bootloop, fc and Bluetooth issues. Can you guide me towards the best version of xposed for v20d with way to avoid problems or with as less problems as possible?

Download xposed-v80-sdk23-arm64.zip and flash it with Twrp.
Download XposedInstaller_3.0_alpha4.apk and install it.
And just in case if you have a bootloop, download xposed-uninstaller-20150831-arm64.zip.

Flash Imperium Kernel or SimpleGX Kernel. I used their kernels and ROMS on my older phones, they are legend. I suggest you to flash Imperium Rom. It includes kernel and everything and it is updated regularly by its dev.

I think doesn't need to install recovery to root the phone.
Just this:
1) adb reboot bootloader
2) fastboot boot TWRP-2-8.7.0-h815.img
Wait a second and it will open, on the phone, the recovery.
Once open go to Advanced -> ADB sideload and take a swipe to start it where it says "Swipe to Start sideload".
Now on the PC write
3) adb sideload BETA-SuperSU-v2.67-20160121175247.zip
( If it says after the instalation to install supersu etc just abort it)
And then, when installation is complete, press "Reboot System"
I rooted it this way, without install TWRP Recovery

Yeah - but the question has to be asked - why unlock the bootloader and root and not install TWRP? If you've got as far as unlocking the bootloader you might as well make life easier for yourself and install TWRP - that way anything you want to flash in the future can be done without being tethered to the PC, and also allows you to take proper full system image backups etc.

Of course , i agree with you. By the way, we can't root g4 on m6 without unlocked bootloader.
And finally, i decided to pass twrp on my phone, for every file i want to install from twrp, and not every time to boot from pc
You're right
p.s. the first thing i did after twrp installed, was to install g5 live wallpapers

magisk on stock rom unrooted

Thats the question, can "easily" install magisk on stock rom (.236) unrooted ? since magisk thread says that root is not necessary, its ask for stock boot img that cant be obtained w/o root

Never tried, but even though root may not be needed, unlocked bootloader probably is. Magisk non-system works by patching boot img... If you unlock bootloader you probably can use it.

You can unlocked bl by official Sony method, then flash recovery with adb. Boot to recovery and flash Magisk.
Backup ta - https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/universal-dirtycow-based-ta-backup-t3514236
Unlock bl - https://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader
Recovery img - https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=961840155545588613
You can try flashing recovery within locked bl, but I don't think it would work.

So, if you was wondering it, no, cant flash it with locked bl.
At the moment Backup ta didnt work, will check that thread
And thanx the help, nice to have you on z1c forum :good:
perfect. thx! i was already wondering, if i had to downgrade my z1c in order to get the recovery back. but now, how i do i flash magisk from here?
when i try to flash, i get an error message saying, that the ftf is in sony elf32 format and that i need bootbridge from @AdrianDC to flash.
anyone ever did that or has a better idea?
just tried it now and ended up in a bootlop
It is many months after this post, but in case this helps anyone, here is the answer.
BootBridge method is pretty simple and it worked for me.
On an un-rooted device. (important)
Just rename magisk zip to "install.zip" put it in a folder called install.
Then with 7zip, create a zip-file, include the bootbridge folders, "META-INF" and "scripts" with the "install folder" you just created.
Then name it "anything_you_like.zip" and flash with TWRP
Basically Magisk is SuperSU alternative and provides SuperSU service for your device. ( roots it )
No problems for me at this point. Working on 14.5.A.0.270 and can also get working on 14.6.A.0.236 but have other problems related to getting compatible recovery on 236.
Eventually in recovery, system mount and unmount break for me, then other mounts eventually fail after trying to get Nanodroid working (My Goal to UnGoogle my Z1c) and can't wipe format or anything (only way to fix is reflash with flashtool)
Deodexed ROM seems to be necessary for Nanodroid and this is causing additional problems for me.
If I have to run with unlocked bootloader, I think AOSP may be a better starting point.

Stock VS9862BA flashable zip

Hello!
I'm making a zip which contains stock 2ba software untouched, extracted from the original kdz
Includes:
Stock untouched System
Stock Boot (compatible with Magisk)
Stock MM modem
Install instructions:
- Reboot to TWRP
- Wipe data, cache, system
- Install zip
- Reboot
- Enjoy!

Link updated! Feel free to upload some mirrors if you want
P.D: Sorry for my bad english
Hello. Thank you very much for the file. Installed everything works. At first I could not understand why there was no root, but then installed Magisk and everything turned out.
I am on a completely stock OTA upgrade version of 2BA, I have NO root, my boot loader is still locked,<as I have still not got around to flashing the UsU method, There for I currently do NOT have a custom recovery installed; such as TWRP; which is listed as a requirement(?) in the first step of following process (to flash a rooted Rom.)
I am curious as to how I will be able to complete these steps, or am I missing something? Is this, supposed a way to gain root on 2BA if you are on a non root version like me, or is this suppose to be a update of your on a previous version which you already have rooted, or is this just a different way to root AFTER you have had the UsU boot loader unlocked?

the only way to root your phone on 2BA is with UsU.
so after you do UsU you can flash TWRP and from there you can flash magisk for root. you don't have to flash this rom for root
here's a side note. when you do the UsU unlock do not flash the baseband package. it gave me problems with my SIM not being detected

How can j root Micromax 1b

I want to root My Micromax 1b Phone.
wait till a custom recovery is out for flashing Magisk. You might(not sure) also need to unlock bootloader. Its kernel source has been released so I think a custom ROM will also be coming.

Magisk can not be flashed with a locked BL. Once you are able to unlock your bootloader, you need to either wait for someone to make a TWRP for your device model or you can just grab the boot image of your device and patch it on Magisk Manager and then flash it on fastboot. It may sound complicated, but its very easy. You can google "how to root using patched boot image".
Hey there, i have rooted my In1b and i am posting a guide, so check it out!

Question Updating to Android 13 while keeping bootloader unlock/TWRP/root

I have been digging through these forums, but can't find an straight step-by-step guide explaining how you go about manually updating the firmware on this device when you have the bootloader unlocked, TWRP installed, and rooted with Magisk.
I know that having the bootloader unlocked means that the device can no longer get updates automatically and that the updates have to be manually downloaded installed from the ASUS website. But what I don't understand is how to install the firmware from the ASUS website and still keep TWRP recovery and Magisk root.
This is my first time updating the device after I first set it up in January, so I would very much appreciate it if some one knowledgeable could explain this process to me
(In case you need to know, I'm currently on WW-32.2810.2212.241 firmware, with TWRP 3.70_12-0 and Magisk 25.2 installed.)

I think twrp will not work properly with android 13 because twrp is made for android 12
Dumper UL full upgrade and you will get Boot.img and recovery.img (keep both files at safe place).
Use magisk manager to patch the boot file.
Keep recovery.img (original A13) and TWRP.img safe in ADB root folder (dont mix them up).
1. Update FOTA to Android 13 by copy UL full upgrade into root folder of your phone. If copy from PC/laptop with cable then unplug the cable, your phone will recognize the package, (if you already change COUNTRY CODE and currently use WW 241 rom that will be success update). Otherwise, reboot your device and pop up will appear. Wait the phone is fully reboot and set up everything.
2. Reboot your phone into download mode/fastboot mode (it's better that you should enable USB debug/Developer mode before doing anything). Using CMD command to flash patched boot from Magisk Manager. And reboot, now your phone could gain back root.
3. Check again if the recovery is gone or not. If it's gone, then use termux or any terminal emulator for the "dd command".
You will gain back the TWRP, if any failed, flash back original recovery.img that you have lately in ADB folder on your PC.
PS: backup everything, since going back from Android 13 to Android 12 need to full factory reset.
