How to transfer all Data from MDA3 to MDA Pro? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hello,
I've got a MDA-III and a MDA-Pro.
Sprite Backup doesn't work under WM2005, so how can I transfer my data
to my new MDA-Pro, especially the SMS folders.
Thanks in advance,
Dino

Sprite is preparing a beta. We (the testers) will see to what extent this will be part of the "device upgrade", but my hunch is that you should not hold your breath ... WM2003 are WM5 are strutcurally different to an extent that the databases even have changed location etc ... I don't see how they would be able to provide this as a feature.

ok, now I've copied everything manually to my mda3, except my SMS messages.
Does anybody know how I can transfer them?

Upgrade Guide -- WM5 to WM6 with Goodlink

Since folks have asked enough times ... below is a simple step-by-step to move over to WM6 and keep your Goodlink functioning:
Upgrade from WM5 to WM6 with Goodlink
Before you do anything, create a backup of your Goodlink application on your SD card (by going to the Goodlink Preferences and choosing "backup" from the list)
Save the backup to your SD card (create and remember a password)
Upgrade to WM6 [see the awesome guides by mrvanx]
Make sure everything is working (including your provider settings for internet connectivity)
Open the backup file that is on your SD Card (called "Restore Goodlink")
It takes a minute or two, will ask for your password, and then start running
You will see Goodlink connect to the net to download all your information
Upgrading from WM6 to WM6
If you are flashing (or re-flashing) a new version of WM6 ... and you already have WM6 on your device working with Goodlink, you do not need to re-create a backup file .. just always go back and restore Goodlink from the backup file you initially created when you upgraded from WM5.
That being said, it seems to work fine if you do re-create a backup file while running WM6 ... you can restore from your newly created backup file too.
Currently known Goodlink and WM6 integration issues
No full integration with the Dialer (choosing "contacts" will take you to outlook contacts, not goodlink contacts)
WM6 Word Completion does not work correctly within Goodlink
I have not been able to do a clean install of Goodlink on WM6 yet ... even using one of the BLACK Roms that has been hex-edited. I have tried a few times and had various issues. The "restore backup" option described above, however, always works fine.

Thanks very much for this wonderful concise how-to. I was afraid I would need to go to my IT admin the next time I flashed my device. I am running WM6 on a Wizard and wanted to relay my observations on the known issues :
1/ My contacts key has been mapped to Goodlink contacts and the click-to-dial feature within it also fires up the GL handler.
2/ When composing E-Mails I do get word completion
3/ I never had GL installed on WM5. Therefore mine is a clean install on WM6. Worked first time.
GL reports its version as v4.9.3.21_EN. Perhaps mine is newer than the OP

Moving PIM from WM5 to WM6?

This should be easy to search for.. and yes I did find the PIM Backup thread.. and yes I wish I had used it...
Note: I do NOT have Outlook sync as an option.. so I need/needed a way to do this without going via a PC.
So I tried 2 methods:
a) Database backup with Sprite Backup
b) copied pim.vol to my Storage Card
What I'm finding post-WM6-upgrade is that I can read my PIM data.. but I cannot create new PIM data (appts, contacts).
Do I have any practical way to recover (short of flashing back to WM5 and using PIM Backup?)
Thanks,
Mike
Confused.
AFAI understand, you seems to have backed up with Sprite Backup and copied the pim.vol. And you have flashed into WM6, now unable to get these info back.
If so, you may want to try the WM5 emulator (from M$) for the PC.
Try PIM-Backup??

works a treat.

Aye, I found PIMBackup... but does it do me any good in my current state... or do I need to go back to WM5 1st.. PIMBackup, then back to WM6?
Thanks!

Have you already flashed WM6 then i take it?

Yep. Held out all this time, watching the ROMs and finally thought it was worth the plunge.
Mike
The best thing you could do is start using exchange. Your PIM data is right there, all you do is sync once youve flashed and your contacts/calendar etc... is back on the device.
DeniaL's service is good, a $10 donation isnt much to ask for a good service especially with exchange 2007 (so you get HTML mail in WM6). Youl get push email aswell, if somebody emails you at (for example) [email protected] it instantly arrives at your device.
I do not want my personal PIM mixed into my work environment (which is my only PC). So I am mostly self-contained on the Hermes. Perhaps DeniaL's service would help me work around that... its a little beyond my knowledge scope (unix guy)
I use my work PC to install apps, and move things on/off the storage card. Not as convenient as it could be, but hopefully makes a little (if wacky) sense.
For the WM5 downgrade, I have the link to the "WM5 Downgrade guide v2".. could I cheat the steps by using ROM #3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302092 (since I was Cingular before, tho a slightly older version)?
Thanks,
Mike
I've been playing with PIMBackup... what I've found so far...
I can rename the WM6 compatible pim.vol to temp name and copy in my old pim.vol
PIMBackup will extract and save off the Appts and Tasks. I can see them with Verbose. It does not seem to be able to read the Contacts.
The WM6 contacts program also barfs.
PI2007 is able to read the contacts, but doesn't seem to have any way to backup/export.
Back to some more fiddling...
Mike

Program installation failures.

This is an update on my previous topic:corrupt installations of programs.
(see below)
I also can't use the internet anymore, either way via connection with active sync by usb cable or wireless with WiFi mode. It does however states that a connection has been made, but when starting up Internet Explorer i don't get for example googles homepage.
When insterted in my desktop, active sync also replies it cannot sync properly. And i get a warning on the p3300 screen saying: could not get an ip adress or something like it.
See below the problem of my first topic:
Hi,
Could anybody provide help for me? My P3300 doesn't seem to be able to install any programs / games anymore?!? What to do, has anybody had the same experience?
Once I install a program from my desktop PC to the P3300 or when I copy the CAB-file straight to the P3300, I get the standard installation screen: "choose a location.....Device, Storage Card or Bluetooth...blablabla"
But when I tap either one, let's say Storage Card, the thing is loading and a 2 seconds later I get the same screen, but with the message: "pocketxpdf.sf.net pocketxpdf cannot be installed. To try installing again to a different location, choose a location: Device, Storagecard or Bluetooth."
How is this possible all of a sudden? Never had problems...there is enough storage space, I've never updated the ROM, just a soft-reset doesn't work either. I don't want to do a hard-reset yet until I know a way to export my Contacts so I don't have to bring them in manually again after a possible hard-reset. (since i cannot install the program EasyHelper anymore...)
Anyone have any clue, what could be wrong?
My Specs:
HTC P3300 UK (+ extended battery)

Installed programs:

FIXED!!!!
I fixed it!
I have no idea how, but I can install programs again. And I can connect via wLan (WiFi) and use the internet again.
What I did was: I used Sprite Backup Software for PPC on my laptop which I used a couple months ago to make a backup. I restored this backup to the phone. After, everything worked again and I could install PocketXPDF 0.5.0 finally with success.
Only side-affect: I lost recent made contacts and recently made/received SMS text messages. I think Sprite also overwrote these files with the older ones I had still on my laptop.
So,people, you see: It's always usefull to have a backup of your devices!

I applied the WM6 ROM and lost a few functions

I got a warranty replacement for my 8525 yesterday and immediately applied WM6 from HTC's website. Before using the phone at all after applying WM6, I loaded all of my old apps and software onto it and then restored a backup from my old phone. The backup consisted of only Email and the Personal Database and nothing else - no program files, nothing at all from Windows, and no Registry. I restored using Sprite backup and the "ROM" setting and did not select "Restore Databases".
So after doing all that I started playing around with the phone and noticed a few things missing: the Recognize function of Notes (that converts handwriting into typed text) and MMS. Neither of them exist in any of the menus. When I try to send myself MMS from my computer nothing happens. When I go into Contacts and try to send MMS nothing happens. There is no MMS Folder.
Do these functions no longer exist in WM6? Should I use a different setting and restore again? Am I missing an exe or a dll or something? What are the names of the exe's for these items anyway?
Oh, and none of my email is showing (ironic to me since that was one of the few things I selected to be restored) but I am not too concerned about that.
Thanks.
If I want to start from scratch, how should I go about it? Should I do a hard-reset? Or can I reapply WM6? If I hard-reset, does it go all the way back the way I got the phone out of the box (with WM5)? Or would it only go all the way back to WM6?
Thanks.
MMS I believe you should set up again (use, say, "Network Wizard" for that).
And as long as you have the backup, do a hard-reset and check before restoring it.
So your backup was from WM5?
If thats the case then it probably wont work correctly. Espicially SPB backup.
When I first upgraded I had that problem, the underlying data structure had changed.
I ended up going back to WM5, downloading PIMBackup from this site, then reinstalling WM6 and getting my contacts back through that. That worked for me.
But as far as Sprite Backup I cant be sure.
To save messing around, it might be easier to your network wm6 upgrade instead of the HTC one. That way MMS should already be set up with the correct settings..
I would like to push this thread up, because I also want to know what happened to the Recognize function of Notes (that converts handwriting into typed text). A friend of mine has this function in his german mda III (wm5) but i am missing this on my german htc touch (wm6).
Is it possible to activate this function with a registry tweak or am I missing an *.exe or *.dll file ?

Download "transcriber.cab" or variant. It was removed I suppose for extra space or some such..... That'll fix you up. Cheers...

thats not what I meant. Transcriber is built in and works great.
What I mean is the recognize function. You handwrite a note and save it.
Later you can open that note, go into option, klick on recognize and voila, the text is switched to typed text.
As I said my friend has this option in his older pda, I not.
What can I do to get this function again ?

Big Problem! Sync with PC deleted all contacts on Phone - How to restore???

Hi everybody.
I really need your help on this!
After a fresh PC install I synced my phone with Outlook via Mobile Device Center.
Problem is, my Outlook addressbook on my PC was almost empty - and now, all my phones contacts have been deleted!!!
And I don't have a backup of the newes contacts.
I know it is possible to restore deleted information on most storage devices.
Does anybody of you guys have experience on how to possible do that on a WM6 device?
Where does WM6 normally store the data? What software could I use to restore deleted Information?
PLEASE HELP.
Thanks a lot,
t.
You might be out of luck, since it probably didn't delete the PIM file. It only deleted records in the table of that file. Have you sync'd with any other computer? MS Live? etc. Your contacts still may be on the other devices.
Otherwise, I think your outta luck. Sorry
Chris
I had this once and i found back my contacts in MSN in the "deleted contacts". If you haven't synced with MSN, i think you better start to look for some new friends

there isnt any data recovery software for windows mobile trust me ive looked there is software to recover simcard info
http://www.datadoctor.biz/sim-card.html
I had the same problem kinda.. were your contacts on your simcard at anypoint?
If so you could always get a simcard data recovery software and usb thumbdrive for simcards. U need to instal the recoverysoftware on your pc and to get you simcard to recognise on your pc thats were the thumbdrive come into play.
This happened to me when I switched to Vista, totally unexplained loss of all contacts. I feel for you man, I was lucky and had most of them backed up on an online service.
thx for all your replies guys - managed to restore most of my older contacts - but the newer ones seem to be lost - dammit.
well, lets move on
I use the PIM backup to backup my contacts/sms's/recently called lists.. I set it to back my things every day and to keep 3 recent backups. I keep my backup files in storage card so if I have to do a hard reset -ill get my contacts etc. back without computer. Thisway I avoided similar problem(just had to restore the backup with PIM backup).
PIM Backup is the best choice. Synchronization with Outlook only is dangerous - have bad experience too...
Hi
Check your deleted items in outlook on your pc. I have sometimes found activesync deletes items from my phone but they go into the outlook deleted items.
Shaks
I recently upgraded from XP to Vista and the same thing happened. I didn't back anything up either. I got lucky though, my old files from xp were saved in a folder called windows.old, went in there and found my .pst file(outlook) and placed it in the vista outlook folder and got everything back...now I backup with PIM Backup daily.
