Has anyone already done this, or does anyone know if it is possible... to power both the XDA IIs and the Tomtom Bluetooth GPS receiver from a single cigarette lighter plug?
I have a cigarette lighter power lead for both the XDA and BT Tomtom and I'm thinking about cutting the leads in half and joining the wires so that they are connected to just the Tomtom BT GPS cigarette power cable.

Does anyone know if this should be okay? and does anyone know which wires should be soldered to which? I presume the devices will still be protected by the fuse in the Tomtom cigarette lighter plug which is good. The tomtom adapter is 2A so I expect it should supply plenty of power for the two devices, I just need know which wires to connect
From research I understand that the Tomtom cable has three wires, red, black and white. And the XDA cable has four wires red, black, white and green.
Can I connect just the red and black and ignore the others???

I also required the use of two cigarette lighter sockets; one permanently used to power my Magician and the standard car one to be kept free for ad-hoc devices.

It has a socket on one end and bare wires on the other, which can either be spured of your existing socket or directly from battery. This way your devices are still protected by the fuse of the charger.
Another benenfit of this is that all cables are totally hidden under the centre console of my car- no wires to get in the way.
Of course this is a semi-permanent, 'tidy' solution; if you're not too fussed with that then just use one of those 2-1 cigarette socket adapters.
I had a IIs a few months ago and I bought a Silver shield holder with tom-tom converter cable.
This has been a great cradle and it only needs the one power supply. It also has an amplified speaker built-in, which you connect into the jack socket.
I now use this type of cradle with my Ipaq as it holds the unit very securely and is easy to get the thing in and out.
I use an "Y" cable that came with my GPS, but you must make sure that input voltage is 5V and current at least 1A, that´s what i use with my Qtek2020 and anycom gps

In the end I chopped the XDA and TomTom power cables in half and spliced the wires together (having correctly identified them), and sealed the joint in a heat shrinking sleeve.

I have a tomtom bluetooth gps receiver that I used to use with my xda-ii for my satnav solution. I had a car charger that charged the xda and tomtom unit at once. I have now upgraded to the Exec and am hoping to find a similar car charger but couldnt find any on google/ebay - does anybody know of one that exists?

Cannot be of help, but looking for the exact same solution. I had an iMate JAM and a cradle that charged that (mini-USB) and had an output for TomTom Bluetooth. If all else fails I could try taking apart the adapter because it has the correct output, just the Exec won't fit in it!
assuming the TOMTOM gps receiver uses a round 5V center positive connector to charge it ( which it almost certainly would do )

in that case I have seen a car lighter plug on ebay that has a USB socket in the back, it was on £3~£4 you could then use a regular sync and charge cable to charge it
o2 shops are now stocking the car charging lead... complete with natty o2 shaped blue indicator!
To get round the problem of daisy chaining mounts and receivers, I got a great car charger - dual usb adapter from eBay (I searched for "dual usb car") which gives you 2 usb sockets for about £8 all in. Having bought this though, I'm thinking of installing a spare cigarette lighter socket behind the dash to power it from and cut down on cables in the cabin...
Funnily enough, the many Sync and charge cables for the Sony PSP would be able to simultaneously charge both a Jasjar and a bluetooth GPS unit

Universal charger- special
The Universal as well as the Typhoon, Wizard etc. need special wiring for the mini USB. when connecting to the computer the the driver is activating the proper pins in the Mini USB socket and you can see the "charge" light on. However when connecting to a USB Poer Supply, pins need to be manipulated (some to ground or perhaps to Vcc). I'v looked into this issue many times (searching in the Internet) and could not find a proper wiring diagram. although I know for sure that they are exist as there are some Car working chargers offered for Universal / Typhoon.
In any case refering to this thread, a car charger that works for Jam/XDA2Mini most probably will not work for the Jasjar/Universal unless i is apecified as a Universal car charger.
If any of the memebers has come a cross a wiring diagram for Typhoon / Universal charging scheme it is appreciated if you could provide details.. as many of us would like to build their own car charging units.

Dude, what are you talking about !! I use the sync lead from my kodak camera to charge my JJ from my laptop it works fine but is slow (my laptop hasnt got much umph) and the same goes for the PSP power lead I mentioned earlier, I use that in the car with my cradle that happens to have USB sockets in it, (pictured in another thread)
It seems that either your usb lead has the proper connection to fit the requirements of the JJ or I am doing something wrong that I am not aware of.
Here is the test: Just take a Powered USB Hub, connect XDA1, XDA2, XDA Mini, XDA2S (all the models that I could test right now) and It seems that the Powered USB Hub can charge these devices.
Now connect the JJ (I suggest with a traditional USB syc cable that comes with either ..) and NADA I got no indication for charging .. than connect the HUB to the your computer which has the ASYNC installed and you see that immidiatly the JJ is being charged. Both feeding measured at 5.15V.
The Typhoon behaves the same for me as well.
Further more, I have few USB chargers (other than the one equipped with the JJ) which is in fact a PS with a USB port . The result of connecting the PS through the traditional sync cable is "No Charging".
The same applied to many Car USB charger that I'v tried.
Perhaps your Kodak sync cable is special (in fact I am looking for the schematic diagram of a cable like this)?.
I tried (just now again) also with Dopod 828 and it seem the same (no charging unless it is connected to the computer).
Please double check your charger cable and try th sync cable that comes with the JJ.
I dont see why kodak would have used a special sync lead, because on the kodaks it is used for data only (power comes in via a diffrent connector) when I get a chance I will buzz out the cable for you !!!
PS I think you shold plug it in and wait, mine starts charging instantaneously when used with the mains adaptor which has 1 Amp of current available, but takes a min or two to start charging when I am using my laptop/in car charger, both of which only have 500mA available.
Car Charge
From reading other threads, Pin 4 in the Mini USB is shorted to ground and that's probably turn on charging ..
I suggest that you read threads about the power charge / car charge in other forums... here is an example I took and although it talks about the Typhoon it is relevant to JJ as well and it suggest to connect pin 4 and 5 to ground. I can't have a good explanation why your JJ starts to charge after 2 monutes. I suspect that it has nothing to do with the current that can b drawn from the PS.

I think that is beyond my soldering skills (have you seen the size of the contacts on the plug?!) but I may give it a go anyway.

Modded cable doesn't work for data now.
When I connect it to the PC it just charges. I suspect that when the phone is in 'charge from adaptor mode' it inhibits the data lines.

Well, I guess it's simpler to mod a USB cable, than either carry around a charger, or install Activesync everywhere.
With all this chat about modifying pins etc call me naieve but why not just buy a dedicated charger from expansys or an o2 store ? both cost between £10 - £15

Just an observation I have made... I have an O2 EXEC, and charge it quite happily (sort of) with the Standard USB Synch cable and a Car Lighter Socket USB thingy.
The only thing is... It will NOT charge if the EXEC is on (screen lit up) when the USB lead is connected or power connected. Switch the device off, connect the lead, and the charging light comes on.
I find the same when I connect it to the computer with the Synch lead too. It won't connect to ActiveSync or Charge if the EXEC is on when connected.

I bought an Exec / JasJar car charger from EBay that works fine. I also have a Holux BT GPS that came with a car charger with a mini USB plug. Does anyone know if I can use the Holux car charger to charge the Exec? It's rated output is 5v DC 850mA. My feeling is that it should be okay but I am no electrican.

I have the same exact same question. I too have a car charger that i use with my holux BT GPS and was wondering if my Jasjar battery would get fried if i use the Holux charger.
I also got a USB cigarette lighter adapter supplied with my BT GPS device (No name). The charger is 5V and has a sticker with "IC-USB M616050 CE" on it and another sticker with " e13 020749 ".
I use the normal USB cable which came with Exec.
Anyway I bit the bullet and it works great!

Exec car charger (Supplement)
I checked the box my GPS device is a QSTARZ BT-Q770 receiver.
The important difference is whilst the USB charger is 5.3V (+ve is centre pole), it is only 500mA !!!

I've bought one of the adaptors to allow normal headphones to be plugged into my XDA Orbit. What I'd like to do is plug a mini USB extension into the XDA then on the other end plug the adaptor in. Ideally it would be 2m long and obviously be male - female. The main reason is that my adaptor lets me charge my XDA up aswell and I don't want lots of cables in front of me. So i'll plug the extension in and run it into my glove compartment, were I'll plug in my fm transmitter and car charger.
Hope this makes sense, i've spent ages googling to try and find one but i've had no luck, any ideas?

These wont carry the audio though. They are only 5 pin and carry data only. Ive got one of these cables and the 3 in 1 adaptor. The adaptor is extusb and has 11 pins, and this cable is regular usb with only 5 pins. Not only that, they dont actually fit together as a male extusb is a slightly different shape to the female regular miniusb. Obviously Female Extusb to male miniusb would work, but this cable is the wrong way round for that.

I was also looking for one to use in my car. Couldn't find any so I made one. Used a vga cable, cut the htc usb charger/2.5 headphone splitter that came with my touch, and soldered the cables together. I'll post pics tomorrow if i get a chance. Btw, i got lucky, because while trying to solder one of the last cables, the yellow cable that connects to the end of the 2.5 headphone jack came off. Luckily, it wasn't the cable that was for left or right channel.
I couldnt find an 11 core cable small enough to look good. VGA cable isnt too thick though... tempting.

I tried heating up the wirers, but the solder always bonds to the tip or combine with the solder coil again.

OK, sorry, I had used it OK with my Motorola phone, and that did the audio OK. Didn't realise there were more pins in the PDA cable.

how many wires are needed for power and Stereo?
I am Guessing 1 for right, 1 for left, 1 for Power, and for ground. I am asking because I want to make my own, but I do not want a big diameter cable.
I have the 3 in 1 splitter, so it has everything I need except for length. Is a 4 wire cable all it really needs?
Anyone?...

What works for me is to melt a tiny bit of solder on the tip, then touch that melted solder to the wires. It will transfer heat to the wires and you can add more solder from another angle. Wipe the tip on a wet sponge after every use. This leaves a thin layer of clean solder on the tip. If you let the tip go uncleaned for too long it turns totally black and conducts heat poorly. If you buy tip cleaner you can sometimes get the black off.
Also, if you have tiny things to connect and little space to work, put a bit of solder on both things first, then touch them together and the heat will transfer into both of them, melting them together. Keeping them steady after you pull the tip away is key to a strong join. If they're trying to pull apart as the solder cools, the solder will look more dull than shiny and be easy to break.
Also, be absolutely sure you get 63/37 (63% tin, 37% lead) solder instead of lead-free because lead-free doesn't melt till a much higher temperature and that's more likely to damage your electronics. Also, I could barely melt the lead-free solder with three different irons I tried and it was very hard to make it bond to things.

USB power uses a +5V and ground pin on the top row.
Audio uses 3 more pins along the bottom: left, right, and audio ground. There's also two mic pins along the bottom you might want to tap into.

So I am planning on getting the Infuse dock for my S3. I want to hard-wire it in my truck so it is a clean install and wires are not everywhere. My options that I see right now are to splice in a cig lighter socket to the current one or the head unit power and then just plug in the car charger to that and run the wire behind the dash up to the mount.
I am assuming the power adapter that gets plugged into the cig lighter steps the power down from the 12v+ to the 3 or 4v to charge the phone correct? Or is this built into the part of the actual dock/mount that slides into the phone? If this is built into the dock/mount I could just run a wire straight down to the fuse panel and wire it in there without having to use a cig socket and adapter.
And another quick question....if I got a new head unit with a rear USB port I could just run a longer USB cable from the dock behind the dash to the rear input. Assuming this provides power, I could charge, use MTP, and stream pandora correct? Would this also replace Bluetooth hands free calling? I guess it would just be simple to pop the phone in the dock and have all those features and not have to worry about turning Bluetooth on and off and pairing. Plus I would assume audio quality would be better via a wired connection rather than Bluetooth.

The dock needs a micro usb connection, which is 5 volts. You have lots of options, from just plugging a micro usb car charger into the dock and lighter socket, to opening up that car charger and wiring direct to fuse box, to wiring a new lighter socket under the dash to the fuse box then getting the little adapter that looks like a rocket that plugs into a lighter socket and gives you a usb port. Combine that with a micro usb cable and poof. I did this last setup and it works great...
I want to connect my note 2 to my car stereo via HDMI so I bought a cheap MHL cable for galaxy S3 assuming it works on note 2 as well.
The main purpose of doing this is to see the navigation on the car stereo screen so I don't need to attach my phone on the windscreen. However, every time I connect the MHL cable the phone loses GPS signal immediately. I have tried it at home on my TV, same problem. So does anyone have a genuine adapter from samsung can help me to test if you can get GPS signal with it connected to your TV via HDMI? If it works, I may buy a "real" samsung adapter and through that cable to the trash.

I have exactly the same issue with an S3 - cheapo ebay MHL, as soon as I plug in GPS signal definately drops.
My cable has a standard USB plug for power, and an HDMI plug for the screen and a micro-usb for the phone. To start with I plugged the USB power end into my cheapo £0.99 USB cigaratte adapter from china. Instantly the GPS signal disappeared completely.
I have today replaced the cheap power supply with a more expensive Gifford PowerBolt cigarette USB adapter and now I get more signal, but there is definately still a drop. For instance the phone on its own will Navigate when located near my gear stick, but will not get a signal when plugged into MHL in this location, but I can navigate successfully with the phone on the dash under the windscreen with the new power supply.
I'm wondering if this supply is somewhat better than the crap from China but still too dirty.
Does anyone have any recommendations of an adapter that will give a pure power supply.
The other issue I am having here is that although my power supply can output 1 AMP which should be sufficient to support MHL, GPS, Bluetooth etc and charge the battery, the phone is not detecting this supply as AC so only using 500MA from the supply, meaning the battery drains and eventually runs out on a long journey.

We must be using the same product. My one comes in red cable. Actually, I really like the design cos one single cable solves all issue: charge+HDMI. If I use the genuine Samsung adapter, I have to connect both HDMI cable and USB charging cable.Now I use the aluminum foil from my kitchen to wrap all three ends of the cable and it makes the GPS signal a little bit better. I have ordered some ferrite core clips from eBay hope this can solve the problem.

Any update on this from your end? Did the ferrite core clips work? I have found some more info that this could be caused by the fact the HDMI do signal is grounded to the external lcd display, which in turn is grounded to the cars chassis (either through wires in a harness or directly) and then the phone is also grounded to the power side of things, and because both are grounded to different points on the car this creates ground potential difference. I don't really know too much about this but am told that this will almost definitely interfere with the signal. I have been advised to ensure the lcd display and the power cigarette adapter are grounded to the same point on the car. So I have hooked up a cigarette lighter socket behind my LCD and then grounded both the LCD power and the cigarette socket to the car radio harness at the same point then plugged in the power adapter into this new socket, unfortunately this has not made a difference. The next step I am advised is to ground them directly to the car chassis to achieve a better ground connection.
The problem still could remain due to the fact the circuitry in the in the lcd may cause resistance and cause ground potential difference regardless of both the phone power and the lcd power being grounded to the same point on the car.
I am wondering if connecting the ground of the hdmi port on the lcd directly to the chassis whether this may help?
Do you understand any of this? Does it make sense. Doing my head in!!!

No, unfortunately the ferrite core clips don't work. I cannot find any better solution than the aluminium foil wrap now.

I have the same issue with my S3 and MHL that I got from Samsung.
When I just connect to MHL I see instant GPS signal drop and also data GPS/LTE drop as well
Any ideas how to solve this issue?

Were you ever able to your signal issues? I just installed the x8500bhs and im having signal issues as well.

yes, I solved this issue by replacing black 1.0 MHL with new white 2.0 MHL I got directly from Samsung.
Samsung tech told me that for 1.0 MHL it is expected to cut signal when it's in HDMI mode as TV doesn't expect any GPS
