MDA-Pro, USB cable / BT-GPS car charger, cable - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Accessories

Hi there!
Does anyone tried to charge Univesral using USB cable + BT-GPS (NemeriX) car sharger and its cable (see image below)
Will it charge ma mdapro or crash it?

Don't know about this particular one, but my Holux GPSlim236 charger will charge the Exec/Universal, but only if the device is switched off or not running much. If you turn on BlueTooth & WiFi the drain is too much for the Holux charger and the Universal's charging light goes out.

I just want to charge my pda during the TomTom+BT-GPS is working. There is only one way to find out > try it

I have just purchased a cable that powers the Jasjar & Tomtom BT GPS unit on ebay, & they have more for sale here. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/O2-XDA-Exec-I...857569133QQcategoryZ48674QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Can't wait for it to arrive.
Should go well with my Brodit car mount which I also purchased on ebay.
Mike

Hey Mikew, the guy selling the kit on Ebay in your link is an old friend of mine (known him about ten years). He gets all my accessories for me.
I think he is a great source for all PDA/phone stuff (but then I would, he's my mate :wink; don't take my word for it, try ordering from him and see if he provides good service (he will).

Received my dual car charger cable so I can charge my Jasjar & Tomtom at the same time from a single cig. socket, works very well with my Brodit passive holder.
They say that it will work on a range of GPS units including Tom Tom, Globalsat, Rikaline, Fortuna, Emtac and Leadtek 12/24v
They have more of these cables for sale on e-bay for £9.99 each, for example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/O2-XDA-Exec-I...858346791QQcategoryZ48674QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Does the charger, charge enough?
I tried different chargers but when the EXEC is with bluetooth and/or wi-fi, my car chargers wont charge the phone at all (or very little: it discharges faster then charging)

claudioita
Perhaps you have a problem with the car power outlet not delivering enough power, have you tried it in another car.
You should connect & disconnect the power while switched off as per the manual.
Mike

I too have the car Holux GPSlim and found that it is insufficient to charge my Exec... so... I bought an original O2 Car charger for it.
The O2 charger charges the Holux just fine too. The only problem with the holux is that you can't charge it while it's on.
The O2 charger does seem to charge the device when Bluetooth is on also, but it's only a trickle really.

Thanks for your answers.
Mikew:
Yes I tried the car charger in another car, the problem persists.
'You should connect & disconnect the power while switched off as per the manual'
I am not sure I understood this.
Anyway what I need is to charge the EXEC when is consuming lots of power, for example when I use Tomtom with a bluetooth GPS device. Of course the EXEC has to be ON to show me the navigation.
Without proper charge I can use the EXEC for very little 1, 2 hours of GPS navigation.
Ninjadonkey:
Does the O2 car charger, charge the EXEC well? Specifically if you use the EXEC with Bluetooth/Wi-Fi ON, will it charge it?
Thanks

Ohh now I understand. The Holux GPS has the same miniUSB plug for charging.
It seems that "general" in car charger for miniUSB devices wont charge enough the EXEC.
NinjaDonkey:
From your post it seems that original O2 charger is also not that great to charge the EXEC when bluetooth/wi-fi mode is on.
So the question again is, is there any car charger that charges the EXEC well enough?

claudioita
The manual says you should switch the PDA off when you connect or disconnect USB cable. I usually power BT GPS first & get red charger light then connect Jasjar & wait for amber before switch on, BT GPS then goes to green. Not tried a long journey since I got the Y cable.
Hope this helps
Mike

Is there anybody who knows where I can find this cable in The Netherelands?

These cables still available on ebay.co.uk & only an extra £1 postage for Europe.

Does this cable work?
I just saw this cable in my local MediaMarkt. It's made for use with the PSP, but maybe it also works with my MDA Pro and Globalsat 308. If there is anybody who has some info, please let me know...

3,5mm BT Adaptor

Hey guys,
I have been looking for a Bluetooth adaptor that has a 3,5mm plug.

my truck has a 3.5 mm input and its much easier leaving it plugged in and i dont have to plug my phone everytime i got in and out of the car
two questions
does this have any annoying blue lights flashing??
does it have a built in mic??? (i do see it in the picture, but does it work good for making phone calls with echo canceling??)
I am currently on my 3rd BT Stereo Headset/Earphones. I originally had the Motorola HT820. It is the best I have used compare to the rest of the bluetooth headsets I've used. The reason is not because of it's comfortableness (it's not because it hurts after using past a hour or 2 on the ears), but it autoconnects to my Dash/Wing via A2DP, easy port mini-USB charging, and great battery life with little effort in having a full charge. It also produce the best sound/bass (if any). I decided to switch to 3.5MM bluetooth adapter because earphones were more comfortable for me. I move on to the Itech R35. This 3.5mm adapter uses a non-standard charging adapter which was very inconvenient. Since the Dash/Wing uses mini-usb port charging, the HT820 was much more convenient because I can use a universal usb charger. The battery life was decent but not as long as the HT820 which lasted well over 7 hours at least for me with great idle time. The sound for the R35 was mediocre but reasonable for most people I believe. No Bass obviously. I used the JVC Marshmallows (earphones) along with it. Unfortunately, the adapter started coming apart after a year of use and due to detach wiring from the chip, which I don't know where to properly solder the wire back onto, I moved to my 3rd bluetooth headset/earphone experience. It's the same one mention by the OP. I bought mine off DealExtreme.
This was the cheapest option thus far and the most disappointing experience out of the other 2. The convenience factor of having it charged via USB is nice. However, it takes up the 3.5mm port unlike the Itech R35. But I guess it doesn't matter because the biggest downfall of A2DP devices is the inability to charge and use at the same time. I have used the wall charger it came with, a ipod shuffle charging adapter (3.5mm to usb adapter), and the 3.5mm to usb cable it comes with. According to the manual, a blue light is suppose to be on when it's fully charged and a sound I believe. I NEVER get a blue light indicating anything or any sound. The USB wall charger (not the 3.5mm adapter itself) that it comes with, shows a red dot, when I plug it into the power socket which I am not sure if it's suppose to be that way because the charger also has a green light indicator which I can't seem to get the wall charger to properly light up. When plugged in, the wall charger and the 3.5mm adapter both show a steady red light indicating it's charging something. And it still does charge the adapter somewhat. But once again, it never lights up blue as a sign of full charged. The red light on the 3.5mm adapter actually goes away whenever it wants. I use to think it was already done charging. I would have it charge for about 10 hours the night before prior to use assuming its charged since the light was off. HOWEVER, the most annoying problem comes when I hear that 3 consistent beeps, indicating low battery life while listening to music 15minutes in after a night of charging. These symptoms don't change despite 3 different ways of charging the adapter. I use usb ports from my netbook/pc with same results. So I am not just using a different adapter with the same wall charger that it came with for these results. Another flaw, exactly like the Itech R35 or similiar cheap bluetooth products alike, do not automatically connect via A2DP like my Motorola HT820. I have to manually tell my phone to set the device as Stereo. The hands-free connection works just fine without syncing anything; meaning once I turn the adapter on, I can dial/hear calls via bluetooth. But once again, the A2DP feature has to be manually connected. ANNOYING! The battery for this thing is terrible too. It will not last more than 3-4 hours. The most idealistic thing to say is 2 1/2 hours of listening to music at most; basically no point of listening to music in long commutes. Hearing that stupid low battery indicating sound does not make the matter any better after 15minutes of use for me. Overall, a very cheap product I must say. Now I am not doubting that there might be something wrong with my specific adapter but it won't get any better as the battery life is poor in general. Read reviews from DealExtreme about battery life. So whether my chargers all magically have a problem or whether the issue is with my adapter itself, it won't change the fact that this bluetooth adapter sucks in battery life. I came from 7+ hour (HT820) headset to a 6 hour 3.5mm adapter (R35) and ended with <3 hours crappy headset. The sound is also the worst out of all 3. It does the job you can say but not well and not for very long. This is why this device is so cheap.
to unknown123456:
Oh yeah... I have the same problems with my Headset. Red LED goes off after some seconds of charging, I never saw a blue LED flashing and I also had the problem with the 3 beepings...
But I've listened to music with that Headset for some hours now and didn't have to charge it. So I think it charges, but there will never be a blue indicator. And the beeps... I pushed the function button for 1-2 seconds and then it stopped beeping.. so it seemed to be solved.
And Jabra 3030 looks really great!!

I'd bet the Captivate will only see it as USB port and never draw more than 500mA from it. You can check which mode your phone is charging in the settings.

Settings->About Phone->Battery status (first one on the list... when plugged in to the AC adapter that came with the phone it will say Charing (AC) under it)
I got a $3 AC car charger ("For blackberry" but thy're both just microusb) off dealextreme. The connector is a little tight but it works great and charges fast
I've found that my Zune HD FM Transmitter charges well too. Has a USB port on it. Not a cheap alternative, but it's multi-functional and it works. Think the Captivate recognizes anything to charge as long as it gives power...
I'm sure it will charge, but at only 500mA, will be pretty slow (especially if you're using while charging).
I use an old crackberry charger (has usb port on it). 500mA output. Charges phone fine. Just not as fast as the samsung 700ma charger.

I haven't tried the car charger, but the AC outlet->USB works great
I purchased the $1.16 car charger from Monoprice.com, and it works great. Unfortunately, board rules don't allow me to post a link. Just search for "car charger" on Monoprice, and it's the first one that comes up. Or, search for the product ID: 3523.
The only problem is that, while the label lists a maximum output of 1A, the Captivate only draws 500 mA from it (USB mode), as is the case with the other chargers listed in this thread. I have not found the lower charging current to be a problem.
For $1.16... It's a steal.
I also purchased two micro USB cables from the same site, the ones with ferrites, but I had to mod the plastic heads with a Dremel to get them to fit the angled port opening. They fit and work perfectly now, though.
Even with the stock 700ma wall charger, it takes almost 4 hours to completely charge the battery. A 500ma charger (most iPhone ones and generic USB ones) will take even longer. This of course assumes you're not using the phone for anything. If you're using the phone for navigation, for example, your 500ma charger will not have enough juice for the phone and the battery level will continue to drop. So, it is important to have the car charger that can supply more than 500ma to the phone.
Currently, I know the Zune HD premium car charger can be recognizd as AC charger and seems supply more than 700ma of juice. And I read some Moto mini-USB car charger (no USB port on the charger) can be used as rapid charger as well.
I've tried two different cheap USB port car charger, one labeled 2.1a and the other is 700ma. Both are designed for iPhone/iPod and hence can only be recognized as USB charger.
If anyone found any small USB port car charger that can be recognized by the phone as AC charger, please post here.
I've heard good things about the Scosche Revive charger. I saw it in a car charger thread on the Android Forums. A guy bought it for his Evo and said it charged nicely with everything running (GPS, 4G, Navigation, et cetera). Here's a link to his post reviewing it. There's also the Revive II which has a 2.1A port and a 1A port.

Thanks for the link. The big question is: Can Captivate regconize it as rapid charger instead of USB? Just because it works with Evo (HTC phone) doesn't mean it will work the same for Captivate. And I suspect the Revive II won't work well for Captivate at all because it is designed for iPhone/iPad.

I can't say how it'll work with the Captivate, but they were having the same problem with their phones (700mA chargers only outputting 500mA). So, I'd have to say there is a good chance it would work. I'd test it out myself, but I really don't need a car charger. My work commute is 10 minutes round trip, school is 20 minutes.
Anyone come across a good combination charger/mp3 adapter?

Car Chargers

Hey Everyone,
Thought I would start a car charger thread.
I picked up one of these at Walmart the other day:
http://store.griffintechnology.com/smartphone/powerjolt-dual-universal-micro
And it works quite wonderfully. It's tiny, and even with bluetooth/GPS/Navigation running, it was slowly charging the battery. And it charges it quite quick if you don't have nav running.
It can be a bit annoying to pull out once stuck in, although you probably don't need to do that very often.

I have the single port version of the one you have cracking charger and sits flush worth the extra few pounds over the cheap ones and delivers plenty of juice

I got it the other day but haven't driven far enough yet to need to use it
Glad to hear though that it charges even while using GPS.
what is the exact output of each USB of this Griffen car charger ?
i have a JABRA charger (comes with JABRA Cruiser) and it doesnt seem to charge my GN while GPS navigation is on (even though its saying charging on the battery icon)
it used to work perfectly on my HTC Desire HD (with GPS+Bluetooth+WIFI ON )
any recommendation on how to fix this please ? like a reference output current that is enough to charge the GN while navigating ?
thanks.

The Griffen claims 1A per USB port, and I believe it.
Online reviews say some users with other phones need to mod the Griffen to charge their phone, otherwise it only supplies 100mA. Some crack open/mod the Griffen to short two terminals to get the full charging ability, and/or use a 'charging cable' which shorts the terminals within the cable.
As a reminder, the Griffen seems to charge the Note full blast, but perhaps something similar is needed for the Jabra. I suggest installing 'Currentwidget' to see what sort of charge you are getting.

I have battery monitor widget installed & it shows charging via usb when i connect it to jabra charger, but the weird thing is that the galaxy note starts mtp mode once i connect it!
Could it be the cable? Or shall i just take the griffin charger to solve this?
By the way, griffin charger works out of the box out do i have to solder modify it?

I just bought this dual port 2.1A + 1A charger on eBay for £2.49 inclusive and delivered the following day....
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-1A-Dual...neChargers&hash=item19ca66b4df#ht_2865wt_1163
At first it seemed the phone was only drawing a "USB" level of current, so I was all set to rip it apart and solder the centre pins to force AC charging, but when I double checked with a dry run and a temporary short the phone switched to AC charging. Now it seems to be continuing to draw "AC" levels, so maybe I had a poor contact initially and a few (un)plugging operations have made the contacts more reliable. I'll try it out later today with satnav running and see if it keeps up with the pace and report back.
EDIT : Charge level draining like water out of a sieve with this thing whilst running satnav, and the phone said it was "AC" charging too. Switching ports didn't help.
i'm using the official car charger from my old nexus, the only charger i found can charge my phone with 3g and nav on because of the 2A output. other cheap usb chargers i tried with so called 2A output just don't work

Wireless charger question

I just purchased a white 32gb Nexus 5 to replace my Galaxy s2 that is dying a slow death. The phone is currently somewhere in transit via the usps. I am currently stationed in Italy and over here the outlets are 220v, not 110v. I want to purchase a wireless charger for my N5. I would purchase a 220v charger here, however, I am headed back home to the states later this year. I would hate to buy a 220v charger here, only to have to sell it, and purchase a new charger when I get home. So... anyone with a wireless charger, can you tell me if your particular charger is dual voltage?

The Qi chargers themselves are universal and don't use the 110v - 220v. So don't worry about that and pick up whatever Qi charger you want. They are all DC 5V 1.5A - 2A input. They generally just come with the charging plate and a USB cable (unless you buy for example the official Nexus 5 wireless charger which also includes the power adapter that supports 100 - 240v anyway). So you can plug the Qi charger using USB into a PC if you really need to (charges slower though).
What you will need to consider is the AC adapter/wall wart (what plugs into the wall, with a USB port or micro USB cable attached) that you usually buy separately (make sure it is 2A output). The AC adapter is what you need to make sure supports 100 - 240v. Most USB wall adapters are travel adapters by design, so they already support 100 - 240v. So it really shouldn't be a problem for you, but just double check it before you buy one.
For example, an AC adapter like this: AC 100 - 240v Input → DC 5V 2A Output. Then you just plug whatever Qi charger you have into it.

I have a Qi charger in my car which I typically only use during my 30 minute commute to and from work so I mostly do not lose any charge during my commute. I am looking to get another Qi charger to use at home and I was wondering if wireless charging stops when phone is fully charged. I am worried that wireless charging will stop in the middle of the night when phone gets charged giving me a partially charged phone in the morning.

Mine just uses a 12v DC input and it came with a 110v AC to 12v DC transformer so worst case you might just need to buy an adapter. But then again my charger was less than $25 shipped: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/accessory.chargers-nokia-wireless-charging-plate-sku6290260.html

Review of MPow 4.2A dual usb car charger w/lots of pics!!!

This is a review of MPow 4.2A dual usb port car charger. http://www.amazon.com/Mpow®-4-2Amps-Charger-Android-Devices/dp/B00HLHHBHA/
Car charger is probably one of the most common smartphone accessories. We all like to take trips, stream our favorite music stations, keep our eyes on the traffic with Google maps, make some phone calls, and maybe even have wifi hotspot running for other passengers in the car. All this is going to drain your phone battery in no time. That's why we need to keep our phone on a charger while driving. And not just any charger, we need something that's going to source enough current to charge your phone at max speed. Let's take a closer look at what I found.
Both of the MPow car changer units, black and white, arrived in a nicely packaged box with a front display showing the actual charger. Taking it out of the box revealed a very compact dual car charger, about 3.5" in length and almost 1" across usb port side. When I say compact, I mean it was a size of a regular single port charger, while they were actually able to squeeze two in there. Another good point about compact size is that it won't take too much room in cigarette outlet and won't interfere with anything next to it. Once plugged into the outlet, it has a nice soft blue light to indicate the power is on and also to guide the connection in the dark. I do have to note that usb connection itself is a bit on a tight side which is actually good to hold the cable without falling out. But at the same time pulling on the cable will actually remove the charger itself unless you hold it down with your hand.
The most important test is if it can actually deliver 2 amps per port. A lot of the chargers claim they do, but it only works when one port is plugged in. In this case, I was able to confirm charging my Note 2 at max speed (the same reading I get from my original 2A Samsung wall charger), and I was able to do that while also charging Nexus 7 (HD, 2013 edition) which charges at 1.5A. Although I don't have two Note 2 to verify full 4.2A dual charging capacity, I have a feeling that won't be a problem.
Overall, I found this dual usb car charger to have great performance, solid build, and delivering it's advertised charging capacity without a problem. Covered by 18-months warranty and currently on Amazon for $6.99 (down from original $9.99, need to use code MPOW01CA at checkout) - this is one fantastic value!

Good review. My car has a USB port built into the head unit, and it really isn't meant for charging. My Galaxy S III would just barely stream music via Slacker and hold the same battery percentage. If yoou're getting the same kind of charging capabilities out of this as you do with you wall charger, that's mighty impressive. I think I'll have to put this on my list of general accessories to get.
Hello Vectron, I just checked the amazon link, it's $7.99 now.

Thanks for pointing it out. I noticed they (MPow) constantly run specials on their products (car chargers, speakers, batteries) which gets noted in special offers section with a coupon code.
Perfect review. Might pick this on up.

Do you know the lowest price of a car charger? I found many car chargers which range from $7.99 to $14.99.
