Using a normal USB B-type cable - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hi,
Is it possible to upgrade my imate jasjar using an ordinary USB B-type cable? The cable is used for my camera, and it plugs in my jasjar. Also,I tryed activesync with it, and it worked flawlessly. Why am I asking this is that the original cable is not with me right now ,and I wanted to know before I try to erase my ROM and upgrade my phone.
Thnx

everything should be fine, i cant see why there would be any issues, ive used 3/4 different cables now, depending on what pc im using, and ive rom upgraded on all of em, no issues

Thnx for the reply, but were those cables different activesync cables or just normal mini USB cables (like a cable that came with your camera,scanner..etc)? I just want to be sure as you didnt note from where did you get those cables. Thanx

I've lost track of where my originally supplied USB cable is - I've updated ROMs in a couple of places (home/work/etc) with different cables purchased from eBay as simply "USB A to USB B Mini" cables, so you should be fine with any cable that works to sync.
Cheers,
Steve.

Yup - I've used a cable from another source with no issues whatsoever. USB cables are a standard item, there's nothing special about them (apart from some are more physically robust than others).

No worries - it's just a standard cable.
I've used 3 non-HTC cables and my Touch works fine. One was even an unofficial PSP cable.
Go nuts and use any USB cable you can find. I have never had any problems in the last year. As a matter of fact. I don't even remember which USB was the one that came with my device.
I have used non HTC cables from eBay, but a couple of them recently stopped working (wouldn't allow ActiveSync). The cable that came with the phone seems to be better quality.
The USB standard is universal, any USB cable will work without damaging the device, as long as the heads match.

USB cable "OTG" not working am I doing it wrong?

I got a Micro-USB to USB (female) cable form ebay... from China (I didn't know until I chekced later. I usually have the "UK sellers only" option checked).
Anyway, after an eternity, it arrived today. But, it doesn't work when I plug it in. Nothing happens. My Sandisk Cruzer doesn't light up when I plug it in or anything.
I was on the ninphetamin3 Kernel, and I've tried the Siyah kernel, just in case it's the kernel that was limiting functionality... Apparently it's not because it still doesn't work.
It only cost a couple of quid, but is there something I might be missing that I can check before buying another from the UK?

That is not necessarily an OTG cable... did it SAY it was an OTG cable? If not, it probably isnt. Pin 4 and 5 need to be connected (in the micro usb side) for it trigger OTG functionality. if it is not working it means one of 2 things:
1. You didn't buy and OTG cable, you just bought a cable with the ends you wanted, but without the funtionality
2. Something is broken on your phone... test that cable in another phone with OTG capability (go to a verizon store if you have to)
3. I think i remember seeing you need an app to use some flash drives (keybaords and mice work without any app, i can attest to that from experience)

That's the one I got. It's 5pin, but you're right in that it doesn't say it was OTG.
I don't have another OTG compatible device to test with
I got an OTG cable and I tired loads of different things to get it working.... in the end I rebooted the S3 with a usb drive connected and it worked after that.
I'm on stock rooted LG6
This is what I got

yep, it is just a plug adapter.
You now have 2 choices:
1. cut open the micro USB, and connect pins 5 and six
2. buy one that actually says it is an OTG
if you can wait:

BAM! 64 cents.

I ordered a OTG cable now, but also soldered the one I had and made that into one too., But the OTG one will be ok to pull out in public places, lol.

USB device not found or cannot copy files to your computer- solution is the USB cable

For those who had problems with their Kies or Windows not recognizing their S3 or find that copying your files using the MTP device mode slow, change your USB cable. I had problems rooting my Rogers G3, copying files to my computer was impossible and when I connect my G3 to a Vista desktop computer, I get the error USB device not recognized (code 10). Then I remember I have no problems with my Win7 laptop. The only difference was the USB cable. I use the same cable on the Win7 laptop and Wahla! Everything worked beautifully!
You would think there is no difference in a regular USB cable but it does. Hope this helps those having those nightmares trying to connect their phones to Kies.
Well.... i could see maybe if your USB cable was damaged somehow that it was hindering functionality... or was just a crappy USB cable to begin with.... but USB is USB. Pin layouts haven't changed.... nor has the wiring layout for USB cables changed. Yes, we have three different classes of USB now... but as far as i'm aware, it's only the USB controllers that are different, not the cables that are used. If they changed the cables, then i don't think that there would be a possibility of pretty much universal backwards compatibility between all versions of USB. I've used my S3's micro-USB cable... my old Motorola Atrix 4G's micro-USB cable... hell, even the micro-USB cable used to charge my Logitech mouse... never had a problem with any of them. Soooo.... a damaged cable is the only thing i can think of that would have caused issues with it not recognizing the device.
I thought the same. This 'damaged' usb cable is from my Samsung Vibrant. It still works with my Vibrant. How do you explain that?
Anyway, just trying to help.
Didn't help me either unfortunately. My laptop works fine but have the problem on my desktop. Setup my parents Galaxy S III with its new cable and had the same problem. Luckily I found that I can use the USB 3.0 port as a workaround...

USB cable issues (keeping connectivity)

Hi all..
this is a general question really about the issue with Micro USB cables and the connector's ability to stay connected.
I know it isn't my phone as when i buy a fresh cable it clicks in nicely.
Does anyone recommend a decent cable where the connector stays connected after more than a few weeks of use?
I've obviously used Stock HTC, but also PortaPow (power only), Blackberry cables, Nokia Cables, Samsung with varying success.
Thanks

Pixel2XL can't connect to PC via most of the cables

Hi,
Got my Pixel2XL, love it!
But 1 strange thing, I had the Nexus 6P before and a few cables some that I got in it's package and some that I bought (USB-A to USB-C) all work both for charging and for data transfer (more important for me adb and fastboot) except 1 cable, let's call it ORANGE (since it's color) that only worked for charging.
When I connect my Pixel2XL none of those cables work for data, only for charging! the PC doesn't recognize anything in device manager and the phone doesn't show any option and only charging. that is regardless of the cables or ports and even tried on another PC with same cables. same with USB debugging enabled and disabled.
BUT, when I connect ORANGE it works! now the strange part is that some of my cables are high quality and even pretty good companies like Choetech (if I wrote correctly) and the ORANGE, is some lame cable from Aliexpress.
So I wonder if maybe there are few standards that are supported/not supported on the Pixel2XL? or how do I buy now cables? same was when I tried an older USB-A to MicroUSB with an USB-C adapter.
I couldn't find any official data by Google.
Please assist, Thanks.
No Issues here

Have you rebooted the Pixel?
When I first got mine and I set it up and I finally wanted to copy over my ringtones, my laptop and PC wouldn't detect the Pixel. It would make a ding sound then go back to Charging. I then rebooted for the first time and then it worked.
Ok, seems that my "high quality" cables wasn't so good.
It seems that 1 of them wasn't choetech and the other that I though came with the Nexus 6P was something I got from the store since in those days they provided the n6p with a different charger (they couldn't deliver US plug chargers than)
after I found the box of the n6p I found the short USB-A to USB-C cable and it works both for data and for charging!
Thanks for all the help and everything, it was my mistake and a big learning curve of why cheap cables won't work.
I still wonder how does the phone know which one is good or not.
