No Service - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I had no problems with my local gsm carrier which operats on 1800Mhz band until a new carrier arrived in the market operating on 850/1900 (not yet launched but testing). Now very often I only see the 850/1900 carrier, to which I obviously cannot connect, and I cannot see my carrier for long periods in certain locations. My phone then shows, "No service".
At these "no service' times everyone around my is able to see my carrier on their handsets. I have also experienced a version of this in roaming also but it's real problem at home. Seems like the radio searches for 850 or 1900 first and if it finds any a network it stops searching.
Friends with Treo 850s had the same problem but there were able to choose a preferred band. I also recently heard of other users of Windows 2003 devices in my area having the same problems on non-imate handsets.
I have read about newer radio versions like 1.13 and 1.15 but it is not clear to me if there address this problem at all. I also saw a band switching tool but that was for the Wallaby ROM. Has anyone experienced this problem and if so what can I do?
My software stack on my phone is the latest imate PDA2K releases:
ROM version: 1.40.00 WWE
Radio version: 1.12.00
ExtROM version: 1.40.176 WWE

What happens when you do a network search? You might want to try setting your network selection to manual as well since it seems that the new GSM 850/1900 (according to GSMWorld.com it is Digicel) network is causing some kind of reception issues for you.

You are correct about where the interference is coming from. I have tried using manual but my phone begins searching, gives me the option of selecting Digicel (850/1900) but my carrier (1800) is not shown.

GSM Frequeny

I have a Orange SIM card which I got in Israel, I am now in Canada and that SIM works fine on my friends Nokia 6600, but when I try to use it with my XDA IIs I can't find any networks or anything. I am guessing its the GSM frequecy although the phone supports all of them. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get the SIM to work here? Does anyone know how to manually select a GSM frequency?
XDA IIs
ROM Version: 1.40.00 WWE
Radio Version: 1.15.00
Protocol Version: 1337.45
Hello psytech,
I believe you're roaming. Sometimes, you really cannot just plug your sim card then voila its working. If you are roaming, most of the time you really have to manually select the network.
anyway, i'm currently using windows mobile 2005, and no longer using windows mobile 2003 SE. i hope i could still help you or atleast you can see the pattern on how to do it.
here what you do:
1. click on the signal strength icon (the icon located on the upper right most portion of your screen just beside the speaker icon)
2. a dialogue box will appear with a clickable 'settings' button (located on lower left part of the dialogue box.), click the 'settings'
3. you will then see 3 tabs on the bottom part of the screen, 'phone', 'services', 'network'. click on 'network'.
4. you should find something like 'find network' button there, then just but before you click on it, choose 'manual' for network selection.
the rest is self explanatory, i hope i was able to help you. cheers!
You say your orange sim works fine on your friends nokia but does not work in your IIs.
Is it possible that your IIS device is sim locked as in will only work on the O2 network in the country you got it from.
If so unlock it via wiki (link in sig)
not it
I forgot to mention that the SIM worked fine in Isreal, my original SIM is orange (I do have an account with) I just can't get support cause I didn't buy the phone from them (capitalists).
About the network search. Thats what I've been doing for the last couple of days but I can not find ANY networks at all. which is what leads me to believe that its a GSM frequency problem.
What happens if you put your friends sim in your phone
GSM in Canada is generally 1900 http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_ca.shtml
doesn't work either
My friend's SIM doesn't work on my phone either. If canada is 1900, how can I make sure that my phone is currently using 1900. (I know it supports it, but how do I actually see that its actually scanning with it?)
What happens if you go to Settings->Phone->Network and then change Network Selection to Manual.
You should then get a list of networks. This will list all networks even if you cannot connect to them.
[edit] This has already be suggested earlier in the thread
If you do get some networks then the only reason that I can think of that you are not connecting is that under Prefered Networks you have a network selected that your carrier does not have a roaming agreement with.
Check your provider's website to see who they have agreements with.
no networks
My provider (Orange) has agreements with Rodgers, but my problem is that I am not listing ANY networks, I tried manual and even added the Rodgers network to my favorite networks, but when I try to search for networks I can't find any, I just get a blank window. This is very odd to me and I've never heard of anyone with that problem.
Like I've mentioned before, I updated my windows to TuMa 1.4 and my radio to 1.1.15. If there's anything else I need to do or anything I may not have done when I updated my network please tell me.
btw when I installed that TuMa windows I change my ID thingy to Tmobile.
Problem solved
Attenttion everyone:
It has come to my attention that there is a problem in the Band Selection CAB when it comes to certian cellular providers.
The problem so far appears on a Cellular One network that only supports 850Mhz. When the North American Option is choosen in the Band tab, the phone can not find a network to register on. I'm not quite sure why this happens yet, but there is a solution to fix.
http://relaysgoldens.com/sx66/ext_roms/BandSelect-fix.CAB
By installing this CAB, it provides a fourth option on the band tab, "Reset Value to Zero".
By selecting this option, the phone will be reset to it's default state, and will work normally.
I've trapped this as a bug in the 1.40.124 extrom and will be working to figure this out.
Note: the band selection setting is persistant, and will not be reset even if you downgrade the ROMs on the phone. If you are experiencing this problem, the ONLY way to reset the value is to use the CAB above.
-Chris
P.S. I've also updated the 1.40.124 RAR file on the website to include the updated bandselect CAB.

I found that at http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53121 and it worked.

use O2 XDA Exec with BT sim ????

Nuubie now very lost after 14 hours.
I have been trying to get my XDA Exec to work with a BT sim (UK). It does not appera that the unit is locked because it does allow me to select the following networks..
VF-UK
O2-UK
T-MOBILE-UK
23420 ?????
Orange
I have tried all the unlock proceedures I can find and various different ROM's to no avail.
When I set the phone to automatic it logs on to UMTS-UK.
Can anyone help me....or is it not possible.
I read that the XDA is not locked, so am I doing something wrong?
I have also tried this
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Uni_Simlock_by_Buzz_and_team
But am unsure of how to do 9 and 15......can any one help with this
The xda Exec is DEFINITELY not locked to any network. It could be either the phone is barred, or the SIM no longer works (BT SIM? I've never seen one of those since I came to the UK 6 years ago; surely BT Cellnet is now O2...)
Thanks Richardlai,
The BT sim works fine in other phones. With the BT sim in it automatically registers to a network called UMTS VF-UK that works fine but the coverage is pants.
What is this and who is it?
Could it be that there is a setting in the XDA somewhere?
Has anyone got an XDA working with a BT sim?
If the phone is barred, how can this be changed?
Can any other XDA Exec user tell me what networks are listed.
go to start>phone
click on menu>options>network (tab)>change network selection to manual. This brings up a list, my list is
@ VF-UK
@ O2-UK
@ T-Mobile UK
@23420
@ Orange
to stop any changes happening just click cancel.
Thanks

That's weird... "UMTS VF-UK" is Vodafone's 3G network. How old is your SIM card? I suggest to contact BT (I'm assuming you're referring to British Telecom) about this problem, and they might be able to refer you to the right people from O2 (used to be BT Cellnet).
If you're phone is able to connect to a network, then it is not barred so don't worry (a barred phone cannot be used again in the same country as its function is to disallow the thief using the stolen phone; this process cannot be reversed, as far as I know).
BT mobile piggybacks on the Vodaphone network, so you are connected to the correct network. Perhaps the UMTS signal is too weak. Try disableing UMTS and see if everything is okay just using GSM.
Oh... I didn't know that BT has their own mobile phone service now...

I don't know anyone who uses it. But I remember the fuss when a year or so after selling off Cellnet/O2 it moved back into the mobile business. Presumibly as soon as it legally could (http://www.btmobile.bt.com). Like Virgin it's a virtual network.
Thanks, So it looks like I'm looking in the wrong area. The problem is when I ring BT they tell me that they don't support that phone.
When I set the phone to GSM only, it logs onto VF-UK the problem with this is the signal strength is very low, typically I can't get past 1 bar when I copmare that against a normal phone on VF that would have 5 bars. Could it be a fault with the phone or is the XDA a bit like this.

Why don't you give us the specifications of your phone, especially the radio stack verison and ROM version?
rom version 1.30.107 WWE
rom date 04/11/06
Radio version 1.09.00
Protocol Version 42.42.P8
Extrom version 1.30.162 WWE
I hope this is the right information. Does this tell you anything?
Well it does seem to be the latest O2 ROM...
I have heard of some rare cases where the Universal's radio reception is very low, and apparently it was to do with a loose connection of the antenna to the circuit board. You'll have to do a search on it I'm afraid.
I have the O2 XDA Exec and I run the BT SIM in it with no problems.
My Rom version is 1.30.107 WWE
My Radio version is 1.09.00
Ext Rom version 1.30.162 WWE
BT Sims use the Vodafone network.
Keep well

Cingular 8525 / WM6 / UMTS not working

All:
I just got a Cingular 8525 and immediately upgraded it to WM6 (it had WM5 on it for about an hour). I am in a 3g covered area but I do not think I am getting a 3g connection on the phone. I have the big upper case U in a box, and then I have the signal indicator with an E over it. This makes me believe that I am connected to Cingular's edge network. Also, if I am on the phone and I try to run a sync with activesync the phone tells me that I have a voice call in progress. Any suggestions? AT&T support was clueless.

The U indicator is UMTS - that is 3G. However, most of the newer ROMs replace it with a 3G icon. What ROM did you use? Anyway, also, you may try the reg tweak to enable the BAND tab in the Settings > Phone menu. You can find that tweak in the wiki.

I have the same thing with my rogers phone, what I'm guessing is the phone is designed to pick whatever signal is strongest, (which is usually Edge) and not often-rescan for UTMS/3G.
If you google and download Band Switcher, you can force UTMS/3G at your leisure.
I wasnt aware the USA had 3G yet? I was always told that Edge was the best they had out there from a few mobile operators in the UK.
What Radio stack are you using?
Cingular, now known as "The New AT&T (AT&T)" has 3G up and running in some of it's markets.
No one seems to be answering this question.

We have quite a bit of UMTS and HSDPA coverage here in Massachusetts on Cingular/AT&T.

Is it really possible to make a Diamond quad-band?

Dear colleagues,
I have bought a Diamond in France 1 week ago and tryed to flash its ROM to a quad-band one. My device is hardSPL with diamond-hspl-1.24 and flashed the ROM 1.93.831.1 WWE.
Follow the device information:
ROM version: 1.93.831.1 WWE
ROM date: 07/18/08
Radio Version: 1.00.25.05
Protocol version: 52.29.25.12H
But is still appears at phone settings section to select GSM/UMTS band only:
UMTS (900+2100) + GSM (900+1800)
What could possibly be wrong?
Thanks.
Your radio is a quad-band radio, so you have quad-band now, if it does not show up it maybe because of the ROM that you are using, but if you were to go to a place that uses the 850 band it will pick it up, even if its not shown there, as long as you leave it on auto.
Thanks, but are you sure? Just to confirm. I am not doubting on you.
Which English ROM may I use to show up the settings GSM (850+1900).
Thanks again.
I forgot to say that when I try to make a videocall a message shows up saying that the 3G network is not available. And I am on an area with 850 MHz (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil; operator TIM).

You have a Europe Diamond, it wont work on any Americas network.
You need a US spec Diamond to work on the 850mgz 3G.
Up till know it has almost been confirmed its a Hardware matter.
All diamonds are quad.

As far as I know ROM has no important effect on Radio. For they are independent. Thats why they are flashed separately.
GSM frequency is one thing and another is the 3G frequency.
Greetings.
to confirm that you have 850mhz gsm which is quadband, goto phone and enter
*#*#364#*#* to launch field test.
now under the BAND section it will say 850 when you are using that frequency. try it when your in a mall or underground somewhere otherwise it will say PCS wich is 1900mhz.
i recommend leaving your phone settings to AUTO.

Ok, your phone have quad band on the GSM network, so you'll be able to use the EDGE, and GPRS data and phone service, while the 3G band on your diamond is Euro spec, so it won't pick up the 850Mhz/1900Mhz band (instead it'll pick up 900/2100mhz band).

It's really strange. Me with my two friends have two T-mobile MDA Compact IV from Germany and one O2 XDA Ignito from UK.

Why is the difference in network's shown? Is it means that T-mobile MDA Compact IV (HTC Victor) have different hardware?
Does new ROM affect available network type?

the bands in setting can show any bands all they want, but it will only work if there is the 3G chipset to use it. So even if your phone show 850/1900 on a Euro Spec diamond, it's still not going to work with US 3G. The only reason that it showed them all is probably the rom that you are using have all the known bands to show in setting by editing the registry.

Ok. Thanks. But how can I know the chipset I am using and if it is a 3G chipset? And more, When buying another phone how can I know it works in over 3G in any band?
Another thing: Taking a look in HTC french web page, in "diamond specifications" we can see:
Europe/Asie : 900/2100 MHz, USA : 850/1900 MHz
GSM triband/GPRS/EDGE :
Europe/Asie : 900/1800/1900 MHz, USA : 850/1800/1900 MHz
My Diamond was bought in France.
Sorry ... but I think you are wrong saying that it is any hardware issue or that it won't work. Please see existing threads in Raphael section, it has already been discussed.
As for Diamond !! we are 100% sure that the hardware is fine for all bands (3g and gsm) except WCDMA 800, as the calib data does exist and the hardware itself is capable. All Diamond I have seen so far have an rtr6285 and also the newer radio firmware support all bands except WCDMA 800. If using newer radio doesn't work (quadband enabled), so it is a ROM/SPL issue as it seems or your device needs updated nvitems.
As for Raphael, it is the same, except that this one might have an hardware issue (antenna).
We (me, cmonex and olipro) are working on this issue already. Once we get the diag port running on EU Diamonds, we are sure we can enable it for all bands (except 800 WCDMA).

How to re-enable GPRS for HTC Twin1000 (T5399)?

Hi, guys,
I got a HTC T5399 which is said to be Twin 10000, this dual mode phone is on the China market, customized for China Telecom CDMA2000 network, although it also supports WCDMA at the same time according to its brochure.
My problem is that GPRS functionality is disabled deliberately by the manufacturer when I want to use it under WCDMA network with my UK O2 sim card. Of course the voice calls are fine under WCDMA as it's supposed to. When I attempted to establish a new Internet connection, the options of line types are only three types: cellular line, bluetooth and Hayes modem on com port, there is no option of GPRS cellular line available as normal WCDMA 3G phones do. I tried to set up the connection with cellular line anyway but failed to connect to the network.
After googling on the Internet without any progress, I finally have to come here for help, as this website is for the best WM experts in the world. If I can not get it solved with your guys help, I don't think it's possible to sort it out anywhere else.
Thank you very much in advance for your kind support!
Sorry, forgot to let you know, the above device OS is WM6.5, details are
Windows CE 5.2.21869 (Internal version 21869.5.0.82)
Desperately awaiting feedback.....
no solution???
sadly, no one knows?
