Extended ROM Questions - trying to understand it all - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hi,
I have been playing around with ROMs and reading stacks of posts about cooking your own, but am slightly confused. Most of the threads seem to assume a certain level of understanding and also most of the info seems to relate to modifying the nk.nbf file.
I have taken the Orange AKU2 update and then added the ms_.nbf and radio_.nbf files from the latest Dutch TMobile ROM and put it on my Universal, but when it installed it appears to have added a number of TMobile files.
So am I right in thinking that the operators modify the ms_nbf as well as the radio_nbf?
Also is there a definitive article or thread around providing a step by step approach to putting together a custom ROM?
There are some things I like about the Orange ROM, but other areas I would like to remove. Also there are some things I spotted on the TMobile ROM (like streaming video) that would be handy to have.
THanks in advance.

Okay, well I don't really know too much about the nbf files but when you do a ROM upgrade using whichever ROM you want, i.e., Orange, T-Mobile, I-Mate, etc, once the PDA reboots and then runs a customization it installs files that the individual operators have set for their version of the pda. The thing you should do is that before the pda starts customizing do a hard reset and after the reboot you'll see the basic Windows Mobile PDA. Then you should do an ExtendedROM unlock and then you'll see all the files that the operator has set the pda to install. What I did was try out all the different ROMs and still ended up with the latest T-Mobile UK ROM from BuzzDev.net. Then I did the tedious task of installing each one separately and then rebooting after each one to see what it changes. You can then add or remove the ones you don't want or want and edit the config.txt (on T-Mobile ROM) and then you have it all. Or after each format reboot before the customization, unlock the ExtendedROM and then install all the cabs you want and then reboot.
As for which one does what I really don't know too much. I do know the obvious ones like the MMS one and all but that's about it. There are a lot of good resources on BuzzDev that you should check out. Hope this helps.

Thanks.
I'm slowly getting to grips with it all, but just need some more time to run through all the messages on here to get a better handle on cooking your own ROMs.
It's a shame no one has the time to consolidate the great info on here and put it up on the Wiki.

operators put their customisation tools in ms_.nbf file, which acutally representst the extended rom.

Custom ROMs

I know this has been asked many times before as I have been searching the forum and read wiki, but how do you take the current rom off your universal so that it can be edited/backed up and put back on as a released rom would be?
I really want the dump so i can input all my connection/email settings and small programs I like, and use it as a (near prefect/instant) backup when hard resting, i understand about putting items in the ext_rom and editing the config file for auto run.
After reading a thread somewhere, downloaded WinCE Cab Manager (http://www.ocpsoftware.com) then looked into some of the cabs on my ext_rom, where it comes to installing registry entries will they have to be entered via .xml files, or will a simple .reg file work and be entered?
At the moment I have one of the WM6_prerelease roms, is this why many of the things i have read will not work , if so i will downgrade to WM5 to try this, but from what I read it seem just the ext_rom was upgraded because there was only nk.nbf file, no ms_.nbf so i guess its more of a add on rather than a full OS. I've used all sorts of tools, inculeding the rom tool in the Universal service guide and the instructions in there, buzz's instructions and many i cant remember off top my head...
All help will be appreciated,
thanks
Why not just use a backup program?
@Frosty
I think you are confused.
You have read the forum but have not fully understood.
Radio_.nbf is the radio part.
ms_.nbf is the extended rom part.
nk.nbf is the M$ part.
so nk.nbf = os
ms_.nbf = ext_rom
radio_.nbf = no point asking...
but can nk.nbf be os and ext_rom?
I am still very interested in cooking my on rom
still curious for the answers to questions asked earlier
Yes it is, see this other post about cooking
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=251710
There a link to explain how to split the original nkn.bf file into the 2 separate files.
yeah, i've read that and downloaded the app previously, used o2's latest wm5 rom, the thing I want to do is get my rom from my exec now (wm6 with my settings)
being a beginner to this cooking, how do I remove applications and insert new ones into the roms? some that are installed are not in the ext rom:
tweaks
small apps (x button, soft rest, etc.)
please don't take it as I want to be given all the answers with no work, the internet is so larger and a lot of things I've been finding are based on previous htc devices, such as before Buzz had his universal

WM6 "Carrierfree" ROM?

I think this the time for making the latest released roms to be clean of carrier files, so we get more of free memory and also everyone can build his own one with this rom..
so how about taking these roms and extract => dump files => delete carrier files => delete carrier registries => repack the rom files ==> we get a carrierless rom!!
so anyone with me??!
Hi,
I flashed the dopod release and directly after it has booted the first time, while this popup comes up telling one that after 3 sec it is going to install the carrier specific software, customize bla bla and so on, I did a soft reset. This way you stop it from installing. After that you can mount the extended rom, have a look at the cabs in there and manually install what you like.
This works fine and this way you get your carrierfree WM6.

thanks for reply!
what about AT&T rom? it has some carrier files in OS.nb.
also dopod rom has some CABs that are includes in OS.nb so after every hardreset you cant make choice of installing them or not because thay are in the OS.nb files.
and to delete them you have to reCock the rom and delete them!!!
My idea is to make a rom that has no little file of carrier or also a tiny registery!! not to flash it as it is!!
Those carrier files are in the extrom, not in the os.nb, aren't they?
I'll change to my other pc, dump the rom and have a look for carrier files.
Edit: Found 67 exe files in the dopod rom, but I think there are no carrier files in it.
Edit #2: Found 2 dopod files in it, dopod_black.tsk (Theme) and P_Sound_Dopod_WWE_0713.cab (Soundfiles)

Take a look at Pandora's ROM Kitchen (recent thread). It does exactly what you want: take a clean (AT&A) ROM as base and then **** the extra you want yourself...
If you don't want the whole kitchen just take the OS.nb from it (or extract the OS from the official ROM).
Normally operator specific stuff goes in the extrom (that's the real bloat). The primary customisation that starts first is OEM specific (normally) and happens from preconfig.txt in the windows directory. For instance on the official ROM it runs a program to increase the in-call volume, which is very desirable as it means you can hear people when you are in a busy situation.
well, i done littel research about the different files in both Dopod and AT&T roms and made a file list.
you can find some register files in at&t rom *.rgu anyway i think there is also some files are same in name but different in version or build. for example the dialer in dopod support video call while the one in at&t does not support video call but it support PTT.
so here is the file list i hope it help you for knowing the carrier files.

did you look at the extended ROM and the cabs it install's before you pressed the reset button there are a few usefull cabs and settings applied to the device... IE there is a new WLAN driver applied...

Hmm, as I wrote I installed some CABS manually afterwards directly out of the ext Rom and everything was working fine for me - but maybe in my noob way of doing so - I forgot something very important though everything worked excelllent as long I was testing it.
Nevertheless, I cooked my own rom now with the pandora kitchen - and this seems to work fine as well

WM6 - which rom!

Hiya everyone,
I'm a bit of a noobie when it comes to flashing phones - but I'm really wanting to get a stable reliable version of WM6 on my Tytn. I've had the HTC Offical WM6 ROM (that keeps hangin when the phone goes to sleep - have to SR to get the phone working again), I've tried Black Satin (the WiFi/new Com Manager doesn't seem to work very well).
There seems to be tonnes of different ROMs - and I'm wondering is there one that stands out above the rest for reliability?
I've done a search and not found the answer to this - so anyone with any info....?
Ta people
A
My best recommendation is READ the threads on the different roms.
The comments on them will give you a good idea of how the ROMs are running on people's phones.
The Best Rom Ever:
Schap's 3.57a, or any ROM proudly made by Schap's.

I'd have to agree with this except for one minor thing.....BB Connect will not work with Schap's Rom.
Anyone willing to Hex Edit it and make it work? I PM'd Schap however I'm assuming he's already flooded with requests.
I guess we can help by suggesting things you may want to look out for:
Only some of these may/may not be important to you...
BBConnect compaitibility
Big Storage, Free RAM & Storage
Smart Dialling
3G Video Dialling
Office Version (They're all pretty much 2007 now, but not all have OneNote)
BT issues - Stereo, DUN vs/and Internet Sharing
Included apps, Standard File Explorer
Included Dialpad style & functions, Kaiser/std ?
Included CommManager & Style
Speed & Stability
MMS/SMS combins (Arcsoft Version)
Included operator settings?
Included Homescreens - HTC Weather etc etc
VOIP functionality
PTT functionality
I'm sure there are loads more...
Lets turn this thread into something useful. Rather than this rom is better than that, etc, lets help the Noobs by adding to this list of things they may want to consider.
my £0.02.
i've tried most, and i'd definitely go for schap's, preferably 3.57

All current ROMs ( and you do want to run the latest, as 99% ROMs released before June have issues ) on this forum are based on the same release. So technically speaking they are all same. The difference is added / removed applications and how well this was done.
Regarding BBC - even if the ROM does not state the compatibility - it is a matter of 4 simple steps to make it compatible. 1) Download the ROM file, unrar it to desktop - you'll get 2 files extracted .exe and .nbh ( RUUWrapper.exe RUU_signed.nbh ) 2) Run winhex ( http://www.x-ways.net/ ) and load the .nbh file, HEX search for the first string in my signature and replace it with the second string. There is going to be 2 occurences you'll have to replace. Save the .nbh file 3) execute the .exe file to flash the .nbh ROM file to your device 4) after the flash use a registry editor to change [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Versions] "Aku"=".2.3.0"
Of course you have to be careful and all disclaimers apply
If this is over your head - just PM me.

Definitely not over my head......and THANK YOU for putting it in simple steps.
I've read thread upon thread upon thread here trying to figure out how to do this and there is just so much information, it's almost too much and too confusing at times.
I'll post back whether or not I was successful!

Flashing a Kaiser Rom on to a Hermes

To the Rom chefs out there (btw you guys are the greatest), how difficult would it be to flash a kaiser rom on to a hermes? Would it be impossible or feasible? The reason I ask is that I am intrested in the software features of the kaiser but it will not be available in the states for a while (and my company may not upgrade for a while). I'm not sure how similar devices handle roms but if I could get a hermes with touchflo, built in improved home and com managers, and an app to recognize business cards... well that would rock. Just an idea I would appreciate any feedback.
Itz not difficult... only question is... does it work???
I would love to see that, but that is a hell of a question "Will it work?"!
Here is a short answer for you... HELL NO but if you like try it and then send me your bricked hermes!
Won't work out of the box, but you can extract whatever you want and cook it into your own ROM, using one of existing Hermes ROMs as a base.
Would it be possible to switch out the touch.dll file with the one from the kaiser to try to get touchflo working on the hermes (I'm comfertable setting up the business card recognizer through a cab)?

i take no credit for this, i am a noob loke you all, i myself like the att base that i get from vp3G you exrtact the base using romdonalds, you can cook with it to, but i cant understand it, i need to take more time. however i take the base and use it with pandora's build os, i also put added stuff in the pandora with Bennec83's instructions.
any spelling mistakes you find, suck it. i have been up since 4am and i need to get up at 4 again

Bennec83's cab-oem
1: Download CAB Manager from Rapidshare or Megaupload
2: Unpack the CABManager.exe and run it
3: Drop your CAB into CAB manager
4: Extract all the files in the CAB, to do this click the icon 3left from the XML button (It has SEL in small letters at the top of the button) LEAVE THE CABManager.exe RUNNING AS YOU WILL NEED IT FOR STEP 10
5: Go into the folder that you extracted your CAB to, there will be an *.inf (* = Name of the CAB), delete it as it is not needed
6: There will also be another folder inside the directory where you extracted the CAB, this will probably be called "Windows" or "Program Files"
These files contain all the files that are supposed to be in each directory on your device. i.e. all files in "Program Files" will get installed to the "Program Files" on your device when you install the CAB.
Never-the-less, these directories are not needed as we want all the files in the same folder, so copy the contents of each folder, into the folder where you extracted the CAB, do this for all folders that were extracted from the CAB
7: Go Here To Generate A GUID. Set it to "Version 4:Random" and press "Get" (It should look something like this - 21f768ec-4901-11dc-8314-0800200c9a66 - I will Note it as <GUID> instead of loads of numbers for ease of typing)
8: Go into the folder you extracted your CAB to, with all the files out of their directories, create TWO new text files.
For the FIRST text file: name it with the GUID you just generated in step 7 and change the file extension from "<GUID>.txt" to "<GUID>.dsm", press yes to the "Change File Extension" Warning
For the SECOND text file: give it the SAME GUID as above, but change the extension from "<GUID>.txt" to "<GUID>.rgu", press yes to the "Change File Extension" Warning
9: OPEN the "<GUID>.rgu" and select "SAVE AS.." select "UNICODE" (Default is ANSI), then go to the "Save as Type" Menu and select "All Files" and select your "<GUID>.rgu" and select "Yes" to the "Are you Sure You Want To Replace" warning
10: Go back to CABManager.exe and select the "XML" button, and a new window will pop up. In the new window select the tab "Registry Keys"
This will show you all of the REG Keys related to that CAB (If there are any, sometimes the software doesn’t need any so there will be nothing here!!)
Assuming that there are REG Keys, copy them all into the "<GUID>.rgu" and save it, REMEMBER TO SAVE AS "UNICODE"
Next you MUST make sure that the following is in the "<GUID>.rgu"
A: TOP LINE MUST say "REGEDIT4" (no ""), followed by a blank line, eg to follow:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\Customize]
"Ver" = "1.0"
this must change to:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\HTC\Customize]
"Ver" = "1.0"
B: Go to the end of the "<GUID>.rgu" and ensure that after the last line of text there is another blank line
AFTER you have edited the "<GUID>.rgu" with the correct things, SAVE IT AS "UNICODE"
11: 1: Download this "option.xml" from Rapidshare or SendSpace
Open the "option.xml" and edit the bits that need editing.
you will see what I mean, as I have created the option.xml to be self explanatory!!!
I hope this helps, if you have any questions PM me

There are already LOTS of threads about ROMs with the Kaiser comm manager, dialler etc built in - there's been god knows how many attempts to get touchflo working, cooking in kaiser's touch.dll, hacking the old one, creating new ones, all about why you can't flash another device's ROM on to a hermes - mulitple threads about every damn thing you've been talking about, some of them not even that far away from the front page and none of you have taken the effort to have a look.

Here is some insite! IT cant be done! you can take certain apps and features from the kiaser rom which has been done many many times if you search for kiaser im sure you will find the home plug in the dail pad and the com manger and im sure some other things but here is a little hint you cant port the touchflow many have tried and come close but it just wont work yet! you can not flash another devices rom to the hermes sorry just wont work.

But seriously, if I cant flash the Kaiser Rom to my Tytn, can I port it into i-phone. Then I won't have any communication devices to post stupid questions again
I hear what you are saying, I actually run a tweaked out Hermes with HTC home (latest version from shen) dialer (older version I don't like the 3g video dialer) and com manager (10 button kaiser) though I use the offical att rom as my base. I have read the threads EXTENSIVELY both here and on other sites 4windows mobile tri-syndicate etc.(Stuff by JJ, Custel, etc.) I've even played with the Touchflo Alpha cab. My question was if it would be possible to take the whole kaiser rom (as opposed to extracting portions of it and loading them into one of the hermes roms) and load it on to a hermes, mainly because the issue (from what I have read) with touchflo is the touch.dll file and how it functions (wizard, kaiser, and elf similar, heremes is different) and this dead ends most projects. I was thinking that perhaps flashing the whole ROM might get around this (basically try to run a kaiser on a hermes, I was hoping that the devices were similar enough it might work). I guess the answer is no. The other thought I had was that perhaps the new offical release might be easier to work with (and the business card app is pretty sweet). I am somewhat technical but not a developer (though I work for for a large development firm) perhaps I misunderstood how a rom works and flashing the entire thing will not be posible nor will it solve any of the issues the chefs have been running into. It was just an idea.

official att wm6 release without bloat

Now that ATT released the 8525 wm6 is there someone who has removed the bloat? I would like to keep the official release for stability but not the extras. Is there anything out there or can I make a request for it by someone who knows what they are doing?
there plenty of roms already using the exact build that is in the ATT release.

mcorrie1121 you are right. I have tried most other roms and have had either stability or other issues. No problems so far with the actual official release for ATT. I just don't like the bloat, but I am not quite good enough to take it out myself and not ruin my phone.
I am trying vp3g's latest release now I will see how it works.
OK I have the wm6 .exe from ATT. I would like to break it down and edit the extended ROM to remove what I don't want. I have NBHextract, NBHgen, and Modified RUUUpdater but they may as well be Pig Latin. I have looked thru the forum and I am missing something, or is there an easier way that I don't know about. Any help?

Austinsnyc should be makin one soon. It was hinted at least. I have found his to be the most stable and fast ROM based on the old 3.62, and I used vp's for awhile. vp's ROM is very nice too, but this one just whips it, so I'm waiting.
If you want the AT&T rom minus the bloat, then flash the official rom and do a soft reset when the 3 second counter comes up. That will prevent the at&t customization software from running. The customization software consists of two parts, the first part lives in the \windows folder and is installed with the preAutoRun.exe and controlled by the PreConfig.txt file.
The second part is called by the first application and lives in the \Extended_Rom folder. You cannot see this folder by default. If you install total commander and manually type the folder location in the address bar, you will be able to see the files located in it. It is installed by the AutoRun.exe and controlled by the Config.txt file.
There is an application availabe here on xda(not sure where I found it) that allows you to mount all the extended rom partitions. After you install it and reboot, the Extended_Rom will show up in the file explorer as a folder. What I did was copy all of the preconfig and config files to a folder on my computer. I then modified the preconfig.txt and config.txt files to suite my tastes. I also edited the .xml files to remove the stuff I didn't want(creating all the music icons, installing the internet proxy, etc.). I put all the files I needed in a folder called cingular, and modified the path in the preconfig.txt and config.txt files to be \cingular instead of \windows and \extended_rom. Then I edited the registry settings under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm.
There are two settings that need to be changed, PreAutoRunCFG and AutoRunCFG. They point to the location of the two text files that control the installation of the bloat. You can't change the actual text files as they are located in ROM, not RAM. Once everything is sitting in the \cingular folder and the registry is modified, I kick it all off with the preautorun.exe and my customized at&t customizations are installed.
I only change/remove the things I'm sure I don't want/need. Anything I'm unsure about, I leave alone. You can tell that a lot of that stuff was written by programmers who didn't think anyone would ever look at it. Lots of commented out stuff left in there and other stuff listed as requested by so and so. Anyway, That's pretty much it. If you mess up, do a clear storage and try again till you get it just how you want it. I hope this helps someone.

Now that ATT released the 8525 wm6 is there someone who has removed the bloat? I would like to keep the official release for stability but not the extras. Is there anything out there or can I make a request for it by someone who knows what they are doing?

Maybe you just would be happy by not installing the CUSTOMIZATION? I had the ATT WM6 for a while and if you prevent your device from customizing your Hermes (the installation after first start / screen alignment - you get a message on the screen telling you that IT WILL CUSTOMIZE YOUR DEVICE IN 3 SECONDS - simply soft reset your device within this 3 secs and you will end up with a pretty clean WM6 ROM).
There are other things that can be removed that arent included in the extended ROM, as well as other things that can be incorporated (SetAcousticParameter, anyone?). Besides, i dont have the attention span to do what thexman suggested
If i would do the soft reset right after install to keep the bloat from being installed like suggested then just added the ATT config cab would that work? The only thing I need ATT for is phone calls and SMS texts, no mms or internet. I have wi-fi for that. Then I could just find what I want and add it.
the at&t settings are only used for mms and internet. so in ur case u dont really need to install them.

Let me know what your end results are. I want to see how it goes.
alltheway I will let you know it might take me a day or so though
OK I installed the ROM and soft reset before extended ROM install. So far so good. I can make calls and send texts. Everything else seems to be working well. I will see how this works for a few days though maybe I will try another ROM such as Schaps or another cleaned out WM6 ROM to remove some of the unwanted Windows items. Thanks for the suggestions.
