Custom ROMs - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

I know this has been asked many times before as I have been searching the forum and read wiki, but how do you take the current rom off your universal so that it can be edited/backed up and put back on as a released rom would be?
I really want the dump so i can input all my connection/email settings and small programs I like, and use it as a (near prefect/instant) backup when hard resting, i understand about putting items in the ext_rom and editing the config file for auto run.
After reading a thread somewhere, downloaded WinCE Cab Manager (http://www.ocpsoftware.com) then looked into some of the cabs on my ext_rom, where it comes to installing registry entries will they have to be entered via .xml files, or will a simple .reg file work and be entered?
At the moment I have one of the WM6_prerelease roms, is this why many of the things i have read will not work , if so i will downgrade to WM5 to try this, but from what I read it seem just the ext_rom was upgraded because there was only nk.nbf file, no ms_.nbf so i guess its more of a add on rather than a full OS. I've used all sorts of tools, inculeding the rom tool in the Universal service guide and the instructions in there, buzz's instructions and many i cant remember off top my head...
All help will be appreciated,
thanks

Why not just use a backup program?

@Frosty
I think you are confused.
You have read the forum but have not fully understood.
Radio_.nbf is the radio part.
ms_.nbf is the extended rom part.
nk.nbf is the M$ part.

so nk.nbf = os
ms_.nbf = ext_rom
radio_.nbf = no point asking...
but can nk.nbf be os and ext_rom?
I am still very interested in cooking my on rom
still curious for the answers to questions asked earlier

Yes it is, see this other post about cooking
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=251710
There a link to explain how to split the original nkn.bf file into the 2 separate files.

yeah, i've read that and downloaded the app previously, used o2's latest wm5 rom, the thing I want to do is get my rom from my exec now (wm6 with my settings)
being a beginner to this cooking, how do I remove applications and insert new ones into the roms? some that are installed are not in the ext rom:
tweaks
small apps (x button, soft rest, etc.)
please don't take it as I want to be given all the answers with no work, the internet is so larger and a lot of things I've been finding are based on previous htc devices, such as before Buzz had his universal

Extended ROM Questions - trying to understand it all

Hi,
I have been playing around with ROMs and reading stacks of posts about cooking your own, but am slightly confused. Most of the threads seem to assume a certain level of understanding and also most of the info seems to relate to modifying the nk.nbf file.
I have taken the Orange AKU2 update and then added the ms_.nbf and radio_.nbf files from the latest Dutch TMobile ROM and put it on my Universal, but when it installed it appears to have added a number of TMobile files.
So am I right in thinking that the operators modify the ms_nbf as well as the radio_nbf?
Also is there a definitive article or thread around providing a step by step approach to putting together a custom ROM?
There are some things I like about the Orange ROM, but other areas I would like to remove. Also there are some things I spotted on the TMobile ROM (like streaming video) that would be handy to have.
THanks in advance.

Okay, well I don't really know too much about the nbf files but when you do a ROM upgrade using whichever ROM you want, i.e., Orange, T-Mobile, I-Mate, etc, once the PDA reboots and then runs a customization it installs files that the individual operators have set for their version of the pda. The thing you should do is that before the pda starts customizing do a hard reset and after the reboot you'll see the basic Windows Mobile PDA. Then you should do an ExtendedROM unlock and then you'll see all the files that the operator has set the pda to install. What I did was try out all the different ROMs and still ended up with the latest T-Mobile UK ROM from BuzzDev.net. Then I did the tedious task of installing each one separately and then rebooting after each one to see what it changes. You can then add or remove the ones you don't want or want and edit the config.txt (on T-Mobile ROM) and then you have it all. Or after each format reboot before the customization, unlock the ExtendedROM and then install all the cabs you want and then reboot.
As for which one does what I really don't know too much. I do know the obvious ones like the MMS one and all but that's about it. There are a lot of good resources on BuzzDev that you should check out. Hope this helps.
Thanks.
I'm slowly getting to grips with it all, but just need some more time to run through all the messages on here to get a better handle on cooking your own ROMs.
It's a shame no one has the time to consolidate the great info on here and put it up on the Wiki.
operators put their customisation tools in ms_.nbf file, which acutally representst the extended rom.

AtomLife ROMs extract! Help pls

Hi all,
I am trying to port the mediaplus from AtomLife ROMs which has the second version of mediaplus with icons in circle.
I was successfull in extracting the imgfs.bin but there is onemore file ExROM.img which is not giving up.
I Tried
1. winimage
2. extended drive creator
3. scooter kitchen tools
but i am not able to look into the contents, it has the required _QHiddenPartition directory which has all the theme and image files for FMRadio/Mediaplus and Equaliser.
can anybody help me .
regards
Shreedhara
Mediaplus is very tricky..the images are in Ext ROM..but the links to executables are somewhere from the XIP section..any way keep working
Well
I don't think u understand my problem.
I was able to run the Mediaplus(v1.0) app on my Eten M700 earlier when I had WM5 on my eten.
But after I changed it to WM6, I want something new and hence I am trying to get the Atom Life Mediaplus (v2.0), which is better looking than the earlier one.
But SInce the latest ROM's from O2 have differenct format
It contains
lot of asm.mbss files (Motherboard assembly ) and FLASH.DIO and ExROM.img
with XLDR.nb and EBoot.nb0 files also.
But that Extended rom is hardnut to crack, it does not open at all for any tools we have here.
That'swhy I asked for help, so that I can extract it.

Installing software in a OS.nb

Hey everyone,
I have some problems while I am playing with my OS.nb.
I know how to flash the phone, extract and pack the NBH. However, I am looking a way to modify/add/delete the softwares/components inside the OS.nb. I know how to add or remove a file in the OS.nb, I just cant find a way to add a software in it. (I know how to add a file, but what i mean is a "software", which is a group of files, and some registries depending on each other, how do u get all those information from a cab/exe?)
Search for the "Pandora Kitchen" or the "Core Kitchen for hermes", these will allow you do (with a little work on your part) what you need. Look specifically at the "CAB to OEM", and remember to create an initflashfiles.txt that says where each file goes.
Core kitchen is probably better if you want to do some serious cooking, whereas pandora has everything there already to include or exclude.
One word of warning though, Core Kitchen does have a couple of bugs. The only show-stopper I've found is the splash screen generator panel doesn't add the padding required for a hermes device. Not a big problem if you have HardSPL, but it will cause your first flash to hang if you use it!
If you want to replace your splash screens (by including them at the end RUU_Signed.nbh stage in Dutty's tool) then use the guide on mrvanx's site (google mrvanx).
Good luck, and remember to read the forum posts and wiki extensively, this stuff isn't easy for a reason (you are rebuilding an entire operating system).

How to cook?

Hi Chefs,
I want to cook a BigStorage/Light Edition of the new O2 Germany Rom. What should i do?
My my first thoughts: I extract the os.nb of the exe file, load it in the Rom Koch...OK, now, it's getting difficult...I want to remove for example Feedback, ringtones, example pics and vids, old office, games, windows live, homezone plugin etc. I don't know, which files i have to delete. Is there a list, which files belong to which programms?
Can i brick my phone, if i delete a wrong file?
Is it dangerous to flash my hermes with a selfcoocked rom (BADBLOCKS)?
Is that the right way to create a big storage rom?
What shouldnt i forget?
thnx
PS: pleas don't flame me...

if you have HardSPL as the bootloader before you flash and are just flashing OS only upgrades you should be ok...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
jepp...ok, thats nice, so i can try without bricking my hermes.
can i just delete the files without changing user/default registry/flashinitfiles?
Is there a documentation for which files belong to which app, for example WindowsLive?
Windows live stuff is normally in directories called "WindowsLive*" inside the SYS folder.
Just play about, it's a fun way to learn and with HardSPL you shouldn't brick your device (for example I messed up a splash screen creation by not adding the padding required for the hermes. Looked horrible, didn't boot, but put it into three color bootloader screen and was able to flash a fixed version easily).
sorry I didn't reply in the other thread.
the software is somewhat modular - in that if you remove all of the Windows Live folders or Entertainment folders, you should remove all of that component.
Under /SYS/SQM is a .rgu file. The first entry is "Enabled"=dword:00000001. Change that to 00000000 to disable feedback.
Note that some kitchens uses an options.xml to allow BuildOS to determine what gets installed. The one for the files in /SYS uses a single one in /SYS.
I'd suggest grabbing a kitchen and following the directions. If you got HardSPL installed, and are careful, you should do well.
I "bricked" my phone twice in the first hour I started because I tried flashing a Wizard formated extended rom to the Hermes... gotta learn somehow
thnx mattk...
can i use the bepes rom kitchen or pandoras rom kitchen only with the included WM6Rom or can i swap the OEM,SYS Folders and the os.nb with the included?
What should i do with the XIP Folder?

[Q]Replace/update OEM packages and other issues...

First of all I'm sorry for my english, hope you can understand me...
I'm going to cook my first ROM...
The idea is to make 2 versions (with/without manila) of a clean "uc capable" rom; what I want to do is take a 1.93 official base and update some oem app and sys (i.e. htc camera and netcf) and remove some others to replace theese with 3t part usefully app (i.e. putting in wktask manager instead htc task).
Now my doubts:
(I've readed a lot of wikies and thread but didn't find a CLEAR answer to all my questions)
1- If I use an official .exe rom as base I obiouvsly find inside it the radio part...have to remove this befor but in base folder due i don't need it for my work? How?
2- I'm able to remove oem pack from my rom base and I'm also able to repack new ones starting from a cab file...but I don't know if it's possible to take (exactly as they are) some oem pack from a stock/custom(when not protected) rom to use in mine...I saw that a lot of cookers use oem pack taken from raphael official roms to update thair roms and I would know if the process to do this is just open the rom, copy the oem and past it in mine... In this case...where can I find a good very update raphael rom?!
3- Opposite than this, for manila I would use the "animated switches" version. I want to downgrade it to the version with theese animations but I don't know if there's a particular process to replace this oem...can you tell me? PS: what is the exact manila version I need to do it?
4- TO UPDATE NETCF TO THE 3.5 VERSION WHAT HAVE I EXACTLY DO? And is the Alexandre's oem pack good for my pourpose?
Thank you a lot and sorry if (maybe) some questions were answered in other threads...I searched and readed a lot but there are too many informations in this forum for a noob/bad english speaker/... like me so I decided to ask!

1. When dumping a ROM, it will dump separately the splashes, radio, os and extrom (if any.) Extract the exe with WinRAR and dump the nbh.
2. When dumping a ROM, it will create packages if ROM is unprotected. A good place of finding a Raph ROM would be the Raphael forums.
3. Delete the old package from kitchen and replace with new one (in your case, the old one, animated).
4. You can find ready made NetCF 3.5 packages. You should delete the old NetCF 2 from SYS folder and replace it with the 3.5

Thanks a lot!
So, to replace OEM, just put out (from a rom) and put in (in mine)...so simple?!
Ahahah...
Please, excuse me for my stupidity...BUT I REALLY NEED AN HELP!!!
(I'm following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=413782&highlight=kitchen)
Here's what I do:
1) I've downloaded from htc site the last official stock rom (localized for my country) \HTC Touch Diamond\QMR\RUU_Diamond_HTC_ITA_1.93.408.3_Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.29.25.12_1.00.25.05_Ship
2) I've extracted all files and putted them into Base ROM folder of surface kitchen.
3) clicked on begin and obtained some folders in the kitchwen one
Now if I go into one package folders in OEM (htc gesture in example) i can't see dsm or rgu files, but just dll and .provxml ones...WHY?! I don't think it's good, right? Where is my fault?!
SO SAD...
PS: I've searched a lot but I've not found a netcf prepared package to cook...
Thanks a lot!

You have to create the packages!
Don't know the kitchen but it should be like this in every kitchen.
Also, you can check inside provxml file (notepad will do), maybe the rgu (registry entries) are set through provisioning.

confused...
I think I have to create just the packages of apps I would to add...not even all the apps contained in the stock rom!
Looking and reading tutorials in this forum I understood that If I would (i.e.) add/rmv apps to my rom I've just to put its files in base rom and then (after extract all) add/remove what I want. Then rebuild.
But for all others teorically I don't do anything...Is this wrong?
PS: thank you for the previous reply
