GPS - how to test it - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hello,
I got this PPC a few days ago (from t-mobile. germany) and I still did not get the GPS thing running...
Does anyone have an idea with witch free program I can test GPS and how I have to configure it? GPS isn't really covered in the manual.
Or do i have to buy an antenna or something extra?
Thanks for help

Did your device come with some GPS related software such as a navigation package, if so which one?
You don't need an external aerial for it to work, if you haven't got any software there are a number of free utilities that can be used to check that it is working - Mike

ok, it's great to hear that i don't need a hardware addon to get it work, but i don't know other gps programs than gpsdash... and gpsdash doesn't work, i dont know how to configure it, it always says "satellites in use: 0"
how do i have to configure the com port and the baud rate?

For a start leave the GPS icon alone you don't need to mess with that.
In GPS Dash you want to select the following:
NMEA data type
Baud Speed 9600
Com Port 4
then you should start to see things working, I don't have that application on either of my Arte based devices, but these settings will work.
Otherwise have a look for the old TomTom GPS driver from version three or earlier I know this works as I use it from time to time on both devices.
Download, unzip and copy the CAB file to your memory card, then using the file explorer on the device locate the cab file and tap it to install the application. - Mike

Can't use GPSTuner....

anyone able to use GPSTuner successfully?
http://www.gpstuner.com/overview.htm
I have installed MapkingG10... and works very well. Howver having problem with GPSTuner...as it will hang my pda when i start the GPS. I have set the PORT manually already.
same here.
Other progs find the GPS.
Only GPSTuner hang on.
What is the solution for that?
Same here.
Now using BeeLine GPS and Navigator II.
There are already topics in the Board of the GPS Tuner Website. The Program also only kills the PDA when it establishes the connection to the GPS Module. I can use the Program very well as long as it hast not initiated the GPS Receiver. As soon as i set the Port manually to the GPS receiver, the device freezes. If set to automatic search-mode, the Program freezes during startup, probably becaus it tries to use the GPS Module at once. When i searched there, there was no solution yet.... We have to be patient
Download a program called GPSgate (http://franson.com/index.asp? - Shareware version available) and use that to setup a virtual GPS com port on COM5. Then delete the gpstuner.ini file and select COM5 instead of COM4 when GPS Tuner is started. All worked fine for me with my XDA orbit.
Looks like GPS Tuner can't share the GPS as well as other programs but GPSgate gets over this until the developer can sort out his code.
Cheers,
Neil

Haven't tried that, will do in the next days. I only tried GPS Gate creating a virtual COM Port and then selecting this Port in GPSTuner, there was the freeze again
Merry christmas
it works !!
Many THANKS !! it really made my day !! Merry Christmas !!

The GPS Tuner site recommends a similar work round using JAL Port Splitter
"I have P3300 PDA (with integrated GPS). When I launch GPS Tuner, I am asked to automatically configure GPS Settings. After a few seconds the screen freeze and I have to soft reset my Pcket PC
Seems that the .NET Compact Framework's serial port reader is not fully compatible with P3300 device. There is a workaround for this problem. Please download the free JAL Port Splitter application and install it to your PDA. Before starting GPS Tuner, please start Port Splitter and set your input GPS port (write manually COM4 into the box) and an output virtual port (for example COM5). Then start GPS Tuner and set your GPS port same as Port Splitter's virual port."
GPS Turner
You have to install the software GPSGate in order fir GPS Tuner to work. The reasons are explained on the GPS Tuner web site...
BEline GPS works perfectly...
please anyone tell me where could I download the installation and key for Jal port splitter
Thanks

test gps chipset functionality

Hi there,
Is there a way i can test if the gps chipset on my new p3300 is working properly?. I installed Iguidance but it will never get a fix although it does auto detect the gps port . I ran quickgps over wifi and despite downloading the latest fixes, Iguidance fails to get a fix
I am looking for any freeware appz which can just tap into the gps receiver and start spitting some data so i can be assured its not the gps module but Iguidance. Something like a gps viewer which displays the # of sats, lat n longitudes etc.
I appreciate any help I can get as I have only 2 more days before i can get this device exchanged.
Thanks in advance!~
btw, I am running Wm6 using B&b3.7 rom
Search on google for visualgpsce.
Bye
Grab a copy of the TT GPS Driver 2,06 from here http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=13 install that as it is an application in its own right.
Fire up the application on the Artemis and select the GPS tab in the application Use the following Settings:
Top drop down box "NMEA 0183v2 9600"
Second drop box "COM4"
Make sure the two sliders in the middle of the screen are to the right, then check the grey/ blue box top left, return to the "Status" tab and take the unit outside, you should see some activity and get a position fix after a couple of mins - Mike
Thank you guys so much..
After running the app, i got 12 sats in view and 7 fix. So w00t, the gps chip is working.
Now to figure out whats wrong with iguidance
Thanks again...
Not too sure about that app as I have not tried it (yet) - does the GPS hardware actually start when you fire up the application - if you can configure it to use COM4, Baud 9600 do so and try it again. The indication the GPS has fired up is down to the LEDs on the device, once started it will flash orange to signify its in use. If this doesn't happen you might need to look into using Fransons GPS Gate to present a virtual GPS port to the application - Mike
Well, I do see the orange light blinking when Iguidance is running but still sees no sat's.
I even upgraded to V3.01 and same issue. Also tried Franson gate app and no luck.
I could try tomtom since that appz does see the sats and gets a fix ( tried it using a free US map) but i am having trouble loading the N.A+canada map since i don't have the cab file for it just the extracted map files which Tomtom HOME will refuse to load unless its a cab file i believe
Off to google to hunt on instructions on how to make cab files...
last time i checked iguidance v3 wasn't compatible with the artemis.
Oh ic. I did come across a couple of posts reflecting the same .
Oh well..I loved the map loader feature of Iguidance. Sad to see its gone in the upcoming V4.
Anyways I got tomtom running.. i was suppose to have the maps in the root folder of the memory card not in a sub-folder !

Build in GPS

Hello,
I was planning to buy the HTC P3300 one of the main reasons is the build in GPS (which I want to use in my car). Is the build in GPS good enough to use in a car? I start having doubts when I saw a package offered with a external gps as well?
Thanks in advance,
Luigi
Of course it is usable in car. I had the p3300 gps (now the p3600 trinity gps). both devices have very good signal. So no external gps recommended.

Yep, works totally great. The Orbit has a very good GPS receiver, v. good at receiving signals, and the units volume level make it equally good for hearing the voices. I've used prevoius PDA's with an external GPS, but the Orbit does just as good, without all the hassle of extra leads.
GPS settings
Can anyone help me?? i have got the Artemis since 4 weeks, TomTom was pre-installed and worked actually, but couldn't find some maps for it. Therefore I removed the app and installed iGo 2006 and some other GPS apps. Now I cannot find TomTom and all the other apps throwing me the same "cannot find GPS receiver" message. Is there something wrong with the TomTom removing or there is some way I can tune the receiver to answer for the other apps.
Thanks in advance

In tomtom you have to select the Internal GPS receiver.
serch for settings in the other apps where you can select the GPS receiver.
It is connected to COM4 by default.
Yes, in TomTom you must go to the menu screen, select 'Change Preferences' then select 'Show GPS Status' then select the 'Configure' tab. Once your there select look for an option for 'Built In GPS Receiver' if it is there your done, if not you need to select 'Other NMEA GPS Receiver' set the GPS Baud Rate to 4800 then select the COM Port your GPS is on, usually COM4 by default.
Hi
I have the same problem, I've checked all the settings (tomtom and device)and they're correct but still Tomtom says no gps device.
I've just hard reset my device, is there anything I need to do?
I have a xda orbit.
edit: sorted, just me being stupid (as always)
Try with this settings
Try your mobile under system settings you can find GPS icon.
Check GPS program port is COM4 and Hardware port is COM3 with baud rate 4800 selected. Access tab click Manage GPS automatically
Once these settings are same as above try with your GPS software (TOMTOM or any other) with the GPS port as COM4 selected.
Please let me know if it works

GPS Working
Hi mate, download a program called crux_view. I have the program and it's only an .exe file so i'm not sure how to upload it, when i tried no attachment.
You just put the exe file on your ppc and run it. It will then test your connections etc.
Crux view
I'll try again here you go

I don't know how to use this programme. Need I change the setting of the programme?
When you start it, accept it then when the screen comes up change the comm port (should show default comm1) and change it to comm port 4 (comm4) which is the built in gps port. Then click open in the top right and wait for it to connect to your gps. If your gps is working it should show how many satillites it has seen, then it should show you how many it has connected (better to be outside when you do this).
If nothing shows up at all try different comm ports. if something does show up then your GPS is working and you need to reconfigure which port it is using to your default so it always uses that port.
It is only a trial version not the full version but it's enough to test if your GPS is working.
Let me know how you get on. If you need simpler instructions let me know and i'll talk you through it.
Or install Google maps, press 'menu' and click 'use gps'.
http://www.google.com/gmm/gps.html
First sign that you DO Have GPS is when the Multi LED (Left One) starts flashing orange, NOT the right one, the left This indicates, that the GPS Device is initialized. If this LED is flashing, your device is searching for satellites. It could be that if you install one of these applications there won't happen anything, due to a missing GPS Fix, which takes a while, so i would recommend you look for the LEDs...
Make sure you tell your gps software to use COM 4 at 57600 baud rate with the NMEA protocol.

gps problem

can anyone help me plzz
when i use google map USE GPS it says no gps reciever found
and when i use tomtom 7 it says same sort of thing and according to my little knowledge it is gps inbuilt mobile isnt it can anyone help me answer this plz if there is wrong with my blackstone plz let me know how to fix it. plzzzz
When you start TomTom click on the box to the bottom right to bring up status summary, then click on the bar to the right that says staellites, choose configure, slect "other nmea gps receiver" slide baud rate to max (115200) then select "Com4"
Job done
If you have like me installed VOIP, try this one:
To solve the problem just rename file /windows/dnsapi.dll to for example dnsapi.dll_bck and make soft reset or turn off and on your device.
There will be created a new file with the same name and you can delete the old renamed one. Then the GPS working properly as well as VoIP. Good luck...
Thank you
Thanks for you help but still just make me sure plz blackstone got inbuilt gps or not??? are you people talking about anything else.. coz i tried both of above options but no still when i use google man it says no gps ... bla blah blahh
and in tomtom 7 it says no singnal and when i force it says you may be inside building.....
hi
u need to go to Tomtom setting. First go to windows setting , click external gps to define your port com as 4, and the rate: 9600 etc, then start tomtom, go to setting, choose gps setting, then select external gps receiver (not sure, i forget tomtom!) choose the right rate and port come, 4 and 9600. then it should be working! if it still not working, try google it! good luck!
and the google map thing, forget it, it wont work and take data from Gps, as far as i know, all it uses gps is to identify ur current postition!!!! then it use 3g to download data just like when u use google map on ur pc!!! careful the data costs!!!
