Easy way to stop WM6 from calling home via SMS (no delete needed) - HTC Excalibur

Just replace the start.sjs in \Program Files\SNAPin with the attached start.sjs file (contained within start.zip).
Basically, what this does is copy a modified script that skips the entire process of sending the message in the first place. You can leave the whole SNAPin install in place, but skip all of the annoying messaging (and charges for such messages).
After you overwrite it, you can see if it's working after a reboot by copying the following file to your computer and opening it in notepad:
\Program Files\SNAPin\mo\jtrace.txt
The debug trace appends to the end of the file for each time it runs, which means that it should be full of lines where it has previously text messaged. At the end of it, after you overwrite the file and reboot, it should display something like:
2007-03-10 22:16:51 **Skipping SP_main**
That means that it worked No more messages.
Your phone MIGHT have to be app unlocked for this to work... mine is, and I haven't tried it without app unlocking it. The procedure is the same as for WM5 Dash, so don't ask in this thread how to do it.

Why would you want to leave it installed? People are saying with it installed they only have 10mb free RAM where as with it removed they gain 18mb free.

Because it's major part of the T-Mobile stuff, and if you remove it, you lose the use of the OZ Instant Messenger, T-Mobile e-mail, My-5 (I think), and anything else that uses SMS intercepts.
If you don't use T-Mobile, it's fine to delete it.

Official TMO WM6 Problems

Just thought I would start a thread for problems/annoyances people have noticed with the upgrade to WM6 (RUU_Excalibur_TMO_US_1.22.531.4_4.1.13.34_02.79.90_Ship.exe)
Here is a start for me:
- The memory leak problem is just as bad as the beta I installed over a month ago.
- The homescreen reverts back to the TMobile Default Blue on a soft reset (you must rename to fix)
- The registry hack to disable the beep when you initiate a call doesn't seem to work (didn't work for me in the beta either)
Not sure what you mean by 'memory leak', but I found deleting the Voice Command shortcut from the startup folder frees up a lot of memory. Personally, I find the number 1 feature of Voice Command to be frustration, so I don't need it loading at bootup.

Try renaming the tmobile default blue homescreen xml to something else, or delete it outright. Im pretty sure thats the homescreen that defaults back when you restart the phone. I would like to state for the record that I have octrotalk installed, and have customized my homescreen with octrotalk. It essentially creates a new homescreen with all the plugins from the current and adds octrotalk to the new one, setting it. When I restart my phone it always comes up as my octrotalk screen, regardless of how the restart was done (battery removal, smarttoolkit restart, whatever.) Additionally I don't have any memory leak issues. I run quite a few apps at a time, word, excel, IE, octrotalk, outlook, a few games in and out, occasionally zatelnet, and the filemanager. I also generally close all apps Im not using anymore, but when I close all the apps I opened to run, I usually recapture around 12megs free ram. When I start up from fresh boot, Im at just under 15 megs. Atfter closing apps in the default wm5 tmobile rom, I would usually end up with 9-10 free megs.
Unless someone else can confirm that the official rom does this same stuff, I feel like you may not have upgraded your rom.
I'm having problems with mail since upgrading to WM6. I can only reveive my .mac mail, I can't send out. I've tried everything to fix it, changed the ports on the smtp setup on the Dash and still can't send out mail. This is so frustrating! I didn't have this problem in the WM6 Beta or WM5.
I'm getting absolutely no email on my wife's dash after this new ROM. I try to set up the email and at first I get a warning about Roaming (I'm not). And then it just refuses to connect to download her emails from our POP3 account.
It' so strange these email problems we're having. I am not having any problems with gmail, or aol for sending and receiving, only my .mac mail (I can only receive, not send email). I rely on this as it's my main email client. I never had any problems before the "official upgrade".
Are you all using the T-Zones plan with the jury-rigged proxy settings? That might explain it. They're moving towards T-Zones being available via the WAP browser and widdling away at other features being accessable without paying for different service levels...
im just so glad there is a forum for the dash/excalibur here instead of mixing it with the MDA like HowardForums.
Over there there is about 2million "official" threads thare are never official to begin with. lol
If I use T-Zones button and go through the wap browser and go to my email I can send and receive fine within the t-zones wap browser. The problem is with the messaging app itself that won't let me send out email with my .mac account. Even if I have the phone turned off and am using WiFi I still get "the message cannot be sent" errors.
What else can I remove from the running programs to free up memory?
I don't use the voice command either. I would like to use the live messenger but it takes up so much memory.
I wish I could just take memory off my memory card and use it as phone memory.. Or even have a option like pocket pcs do and use the program memory as system memory...
Grrr I hate havin a laggy phone, reminds me of XP on a 266mhz computer..

I use PowerControl+OMAP from http://mobile.surrealnetworks.com/DashApps.htm to overclock my phone. It overclocks the processor to 240mhz when its in use and throttles it down to 180mhz when its in standby.
There is another issue with Windows Media Player and streaming Video (e.g Orb, Videos from Windows Media Mobile, etc) where the screen rotates 90 degrees when you zoom the video to full screen.
It's been tracked on this tread:

What you describe is how T-Zones work -- if you pay more, you can do mail within the messaging app. If you pay $5.99, you can do mail via the WAP browser. Which service plan do you have?

It should have nothing to do with me having the T-Zones $5.99 plan I can send and receive with aol, and gmail with the plan, only receive with .mac, I can't even send out mail using WiFi. I was on the phone with T-Mobile today and they tried troubleshooting. They said that for some reason the smtp is getting blocked with my .mac account, they think I should call Apple. I even asked if it had anything to do with me being on the T-Zones plan, and the rep said no, it should work through WiFi since I'm not using T-Mobile's network.

The "Problem with the homescreen reverting back" is not a WM6 problem, it's a My Faves (My 5) feature. Basically, every time you turn your phone on, the My5 service detects whether you have MyFaves and changes your homescreen to the proper setting. The settings for this are saved in the registry.
The location is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\My5\Homescreen
There are two values, On and Off. Just change those to your homescreen, or try removing them altogether (haven't tried that yet).
You could also try removing the My5MsgCenter.lnk from the startup folder, but I don't know if that's the one that reads from that registry key
ha, for some reason chaznet takes every opportunity to bash the 5.99 tzones plan. i have it now with wm6, i can go to every website, i can check my hotmail by going to www.hotmail.com, and the internet seems even faster than with wm5. so it still works, and it doest seem like its going away anytime soon

Stop the Dash From Calling Home (and other data service tweaks)

One of the things that annoys me about my Dash is its habit of attempting to call home every time it boots up. I always recei a number from some service complaining that I have an unknown phone number. It would be nice to know how to turn this off.
Also, is there some way of generally making a distinction between EDGE and WiFi connections so I can avoid burning data if I don't have to? AT&T's configuration has EDGE set us as an Internet connection, and a proxy set up from The Internet to WAP Network. It's nice that Skype and Fring make a distinction between cell data and WiFi, and I'd like to carry that over o mail, MSN Messenger, ShoZu and browsers if possible. I'm willing to experiment since I have unlimited EDGE for the rest of this month.
Any ideas?
Are you referring to a received text message? Cause you'll get that if you don't disable the myfaves when you use it on the at&t network.

Yep, that's it. How do I go about disabling MyFaves? And is it possible to re-enable it later? There's the possibility that once our contract is up (or at least, once my contract is up) we'll be jumping ship to go with T-Mobile.
There's a shortcut in \Windows\Startup that you move out. I forget the name at the moment, but it should be clear.
What he said.... you will need to rename the file (whatever you want)... reboot and then you can delete it.
He can't rename the file if it's in use. Download a task manager like celetask. Open program and go to processes, kill myfavapp (I think its called), then go to the \Windows\Startup folder and remove the shortcut to the My Fav application.
Oh really? Because that is exactly how I did it. (And yes, it was running under the processes)
I've never found a successful way of renaming or moving the my5service.exe file in WM5. I did it without any problems in WM6 but I don't use it. I've searched many threads and all say recommend the same methods like deleting MyFav from the Startup Folder (which I don't see like so many). It simply can't be done or something since it's a ROM/System/ReadOnly. I tried unchecking System/ReadOnly using RescoExplorer then tried moving it using Resco and Activesync. No Go. If anybody knows how to take out my5 in WM5, please post it.
P.S.: I am using Celetask 2.2
i am running WM6.0 what i did was to go to "Comm Manager" and i turned off the "Data" & "Phone radio" icons, i restarted the phone, with the radio off i was able to delete the file, after deleting the file i turned back on the above and restarted again, no rogue text any longer
good luck

Uninstalling MS Voice Command

Does anyone know how to uninstall this? When i try to do it on the phone or over Activesync I get a warning message that it could not remove all of the program and ultimately the entire program is still installed. It takes up too much room for what it does (and I think there's a battery issue with it as well) Thanks

Try using the Uninstall application of this program: http://www.dinarsoft.com/memmaid/ Once the program is uninstalled, just delete the remaining folders and then run the Quick Clean and that should remove all remnants of the Uninstalled program.
Thanks. It helped to remove mobitv and xmradio which were entirely useless to me and took up a lot of room. However, when I tried to uninstall memmaid it left a few bits behind - there are folders remaining in the program directory... in fact the MobiTv icon still exists in my program directory leading me to beleive that it's just deleting a folder and not removing the program from my reigstry, etc. It's a start though. Thanks again
Re: uninstall
This may be a silly question, but was VC cooked into the rom originally or did you install it yourself? If it was cooked in you will not be able to remove it. (As is true for any cooked in application.)
Best wishes,

Quick question; when using MemMaid, did you use the Quick Clean with all items checked? by default not all are checked.
Dead shortcuts
Dead Registry
Bad uninstall (files)
Bad Uninstall (Registry)
These are just a few items I would make sure are checked..
Thanks for the help guys. It was not part of a cooked rom and after checking the boxes on memmaid and rebooting a few times VC is gone (and 5 megs are free). After uninstalling memmaid (it's 900k - I can't keep that around ) it just left an empty folder called "Handyswitch actions" that I'm just going to manually delete. Thanks for the help. I was this close to deciding between keeping Skyfire and outlook

You can't install MS VC to storage card and have it work correctly unfortunatly.
I've had same issue whilst installing MSVC to storage card and had tp install it to phone. I also had same problem trying to uninstall it. Luckily I wanted to upgrad my ROM which solved the problem
As I've been using my phone I learned there's a new glitch - if I use autocomplete to fill in text or complete an email address, etc it crashes my phone (I think pasting text does too). This didn't happen a day ago so I think there's a connection to the uninstallation of VC. I've reset it 5 times and it's always the same result. The screen becomes nonresponsive, switching to landscape mode takes about 45 seconds and doesn't solve anything and both the onscreen keyboard (Happy Tapping) and the hard keyboard fail to function. If I wait it out I can get the start menu to drop down and get to the Today screen but navigation is still brutally slow there and the email sits. I Use o2plus and it shows apps are running but doesn't state them (it's pOutlook that is frozen). Any ideas? I wish PPC had 'last good state' like Windows... thanks again

[Q] Internet ????

These are most likely stupid questions for you experts, but it is driving me crazy. I am using the stock AT&T rom that came with the phone.
1) What do I use WiFi or AT&T? I also have a wireless modem setup at my office and at home. Can I connect to these? What is "Mobile Web" for?
2) How do I know what browser I am connecting to? I have Opera and Internet Explorer. Most of the time Opera does not every connect. I have even downloaded Opera 10, but I cannot find it.
1. If both are present, use whatever you want. WiFi can sometimes be faster, so if its available you may prefer WiFi when its available. But ATT's internet will work almost everywhere that has a cell phone signal.
2. I think "Mobile Web" is what the browser shortcut on the HTC interface is named on the stock ATT ROM, if I remember correctly (I'm not running stock on mine, its just called "Internet" on mine). Its just a shortcut to the browser. If you use this tab, it automatically opens to Opera.
The icon for Opera 10 should be in root directory of the Start Menu. If not, use the File Explorer (Start>Tool) and browse for "Opera10.lnk" to find where it was installed to.
PAP or CHAP Authentication?
What is this and what should my setting be? It is in the Advanced Network in the Connections Folder. I am trying to figure out why my Microsoft Mail will not come in automatically anymore. I have been playing around with my phone a lot and may have changed something that I cannot figure out what it was.
Another question is the Microsoft Direct Push - should this be on or off?

I have Opera 9, but have not found anything for Opera 10.
Did you actually install Opera 10, or just download it (somewhat common error)? It will download as a .cab file, which you then have to unpack and install by clicking on it.
If it was installed, it would show up in Remove Programs. Go to Start>Settings>System>Remove Programs, and see if Opera 10 is there.

It should be PAP.
Try not to mess around with too many things, if you don't know what they do (such as seeing the tweak on these forums). You can mess things up pretty badly. Or at least keep track of what the default option was before you change it, so you can change it back. Although if all else fails, you can hard reset (Start>Settings>System>Empty Storage). But you will lose all your data and return the phone to its factory settings.
If you want your email automatically pushed from a MS Exchange server (such as work email) when Direct Push should be on. Where do you see the setting for this?

Ah, yes. That one.
I think that will cause the phone to push MS Exchange emails to your phone whenever they arrive, and cause shortened battery life. Better to just schedule ActiveSync to download your emails periodically (unless you are really that dependent on getting your email instantly). In which case, you can turn this option "off". Or if you don't use any MS Exchange services at all, you can also turn it off.

HTC Sense Messages Application??

My wife's EVO is getting really slow when using the stock Sense Messages Application. She has thousands of texts... I've tried everything to try to delete them but the application keeps crashing in the process. I've even gone to the Applications menu item to the Messages Application and cleared data. It told me that all the data would be erased. I went back into the application and they are all still there.
I need to get this thing cleared out... Why is it so difficult? How do I delete them?
I'm thinking my only option is to do a factory data reset. I've searched google and this forum and haven't found any answers but a lot of people with the same problems.
I'm getting scared cause she came from an iPhone and she's starting to regret it.
Mine crashed also, at least it wouldn't let me open pictures.
Just for giggles try downloading handcent from the market and see if it will let you delete the messages.

try "sms Manager" from the market.. works great on my evo..
OK, I figured it out. There must be a timer that the application uses which alerts to forceclose because the app is not responding. However if I hit "wait" over and over it will eventually delete what I want.
I don't know why it's taking so long to delete a thread of texts... A thread of just 200 texts can take like 5 min to delete.
that is AOSP/Android as a whole is glaringly terrible. IOS and even my BB curve could delete months of texts extremely faster with terrible os and hardware

I would definitely disagree with android being "terrible". This problem could be directly related to htc sense/messaging app, or who knows what. I highly doubt this is related to the OS itself. I guess I could be wrong though.
try it on any AOSP rom, pretty sure its a function of the OS, could be wrong

I have the same issue on my evo, but if I just wait it out it eventually deletes them. My friend has a hero and it took him 4 hours to delete several thousand texts...I'm curious why it takes so long.
Also I was terribly annoyed by how laggy the stock messaging was, so I tried handcent, and that was just as laggy. Then I tried chompsms and it runs a bit faster. Plus it's customizable so you can make it look however you want it to
If her phone is rooted you can use this option.
The fastest way to delete messages granted this will delete every message you have but it works.
use root explorer or
es file explorer and in the setting go to root options and have root explorer checked. ( you need to have a rooted phone to do this.
go to the root of the phone you will have many folders called data, sys, system, etc.
navigate to
data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
in that folder you will see a
mmssms.db
this has MMS and SMS. now you can delete it or move it to the SD Card just make it so its not in that directory any more.
Now reboot the phone and every text and pic mail will be gone as if you deleted it.
Hope this can help some of you.
On another note this can also be away for you to restore all your messages. just take the old mmssms.db file and replace it and reboot the phone and all your texts will be restored.
Reason why it take so long is because it has to rewrite a database when each text is deleted so lets say you have 3 texts this is what it will do.
delete the first text
write a new database
delete next text
write a new database
delete last text
write a new database
it does that to every text.
hope this helps someone if not you all.
enjoy.

Click to collapse
Ok, I know you said to use those two apps but I tried to look in that data folder with Astro and there was nothing inside...
Does Astro not work for this?
