I am thinking of purchasing a TOM-TOM3 GPS system has anyone got any experience using the BT ?. Is it as Temperamental as the headset. Would it be better to use a wired GPS.

I have wired and bluetooth GPS and would say that most of the time I use the wired GPS because I use it mainly in the car and it charges my MDAIII at the same time.
tomtom 3 and BT is fine on my MDAIII
No problems here with the bluetooth connection to tomtom's own GPS.
Never lost the connection.
Left the MDA's BT on one night and woke up to an empty battery and no data though!
I am using BT TomTom no problems at all with staying connected.. you can get them for under £100 on ebay now, best gadget i've got, except the IIs of course.

I've been using a TOMTOM BT GPS for a few weeks now and had no problems at all infact as with another post its my best purchase so far.
I have just got my XDA IIs, I have Tomtom 2 (Wired version), is there a cable kit that will allow me to use my existing Tomtom with the XDA IIs?
If so can someone tell me what the part number is and who stocks it?
I've got a powered holder in my car, powers the XDAIIs and the GPS antenna (Holux 210 I think!). The holder also feeds Tx & Rx to the XDA on serial port 1.
I've also used the holder to just power the XDA and BT antenna and it also works fine.

Thanks for the reply, sorry been a long time before I got a chance to read it, busy christmas. That sounds like just what I need, I have a couple of further questions though.
1. The connections it talks about is a PS2-cable with RX, TX, 5V is this the connection that looks like an RJ11 modem cable or is this the same as a PS2 connection for a PC keyboard/mouse? My cable looks like a modem style RJ11 connector.
2. Does is come with a windscreen suction mount, I couldn't see it in the description and there were no specific pictures?

The connection I've got is a PS2 like a Mouse/keyboard.
The antenna you have sounds like a Leadtek which is branded as TomTom - looks like a flat silver square?
As it happens I now work for Nemesis and we are working on a connector to connect your antenna to the holder we supply.

You can get a bracket that fits your vehicle and then you screw the holder to the bracket.
There is another option though.
If you have a lead that plugs into the cigar lighter, powers the antenna and the XDA (I found one at www.handnav.co.uk ) then you can do something different.
Get a bracket for your car
Get holder number 849612 from Brodit
Use the lead to power the holder and the antenna
I have attached pictures of the above config for a XDAII as I had to use the IIs to take the pictures!!!

Or maybe the Tomtom cable, the 1 at the bottom of the pics laid out like a W is already ok, I have one like this to fit my HP Jornada 545 (an old relic from Aug 2000). This cable looks a lot like the cable shown in your pic except for the PDA end, which splits into 2, 1 is for data the other for power. The power part looks similar to a Sony Ericsson telephone charger cable, so again I'm not sure if this will suffice.
I wish there was a shop I could just go into with these things, as it all seems harder to explain when I don't know what all the bits are called. I can't really expect ppl to find a peg for a hole if I can't tell them what shape the hole is, and with hole on my PDA and my GPS receiver it gets doubly confusing!!!!
I'm using Navman 4100 BT GPS, the singal is great and never drop BT connection. It comes with a Y cable that can charge both the IIs and Navman.

Just a quick update:
I emailed PDAHut direct with the question and got a quick response saying that there would be no problem using the headphone socket.
I placed my order yesterda (Friday) at 2pm and my PDA holder arrived this morning (Saturday) via Recorded Delivery!
I'm very, very, very happy witht he product - not fitted it to the car as yet but it's deffinately worth the money in my opinion. The suction cup is unbelievably secure (I couldn't pull it, shake it or slide it off my bedroom window once attached!)...this was a big conern for me as I drive a sports car with stiff suspension and I was concerned that the holder would just come loose when driving over uneven ground.
The item itself is posable in any number of positions and is easily adjusted via thumb screws (so no tools nesceary). Becasue it's all held in place via these screws (rather than bendable extension arms) it doesn't move once you've got it in the position you want.
I've had another look at the products I suggested in my first post and I can confirm that the one I have purchased (at a fraction of the cost by the way) is almost identical if not the same product.

PDAMODS - MDA3 Mount
Hi All,
Probably too late now but here is the link for the Vehicle Mount I'm using.. Does the job perfectly, doesn't block the Headphone Socket and mantains a secure environment!

For all of my last phones (SPV E200, C500) I've used the Brodit "Proclip" mounting system. I also used a Brodit base for my Ipaq, onto which I attached my Seidio holder.
I intend to use the MDA Pro for Sat Nav in the car, therefore I need (ideally) an active holder for it, with power input from the bottom, so I can sit the MDA Pro in landscape, with the screen facing out, so I can see my TomTom.
At the moment, by swivelling the screen, I can rest the base between the gear lever and aircon knobs of my S4, but it is way too low.
Brodit aren't showing anything on their website yet.
I don't favour "universal" style mounts which grip the device using ratchet arms - I like to be able to slot the phone / PDA straight in like a cradle.
I don't need the cradle to offer anything else (GPS, power to GPS, speakers or anything like that) simply need it to hold (and possibly power) the MDA Pro. If it doesn't power, I'll simply wire a charging cable into my electrics and leave it terminating close by, so when I slot into passive cradle, I just connect the power manually. Active solution preferred tho!

The toyota echo has an almost perfect little cubby for the Universal to rest in.

I have been liaising in quite some depth with Brodit about this. The current state of affairs is:
1. A holder won't be available for 2-4 weeks
2. It will be passive, not active (i.e. just a lump of plastic, no charger)
3. It will hold the device vertical, not horizontal
What a waste of time! :roll: All good SatNav systems have a horizontal screen. Of course in-car we want it held horizontally, with a charger. Presumably the guys at Brodit all drive cars with vertically oriented windscreens! :lol:
Any other 'active' car kits anyone knows about coming soon?

“ The holder will be with a tilt swivel and You should be able to both have it horizontal and vertical. You should also be able to have it both with the screen flipped in both ways. The only thing is that You have to put the charging cable manually each time.

That's a nice neat holder (thanks for the link ) but sadly not powered. I was really hoping for an all-in-one holder/charger/audio interface.

Which is exactly like the passive holder! 8)
Not quite, it has the charger included and attached to the holder, with a short cable that is loose for connection manually to the device after inserting into the cradle. The passive holder doesn't come with a charger, or a holder for the cable.
However I have literally just received the passive holder, and using my existing car charger and a small self-adhesive black cable-clip stuck to the back of the passive holder, it is essentially just the same, only £19.99 instead of £34.99, and available now instead of in 2-3 weeks
Warning: There is a major design flaw with both the Brodit holders. Part of the bracket unnecessarily covers the left speaker. When using SatNav this means that 50% of the speakers are covered, so effectively 50% of the volume is lost. A BIG problem when driving on a noisy motorway. I'm sending mine back.
Anyone know of an alternative out there?

I am after a XDA Orbit Brodit Active Mount, I spoke to the helpful chap at www.dsldevelopments.com he explained the HTC P3300 active brodit mount does not fit the Orbit as the usb port is about 3mm offset compared to the HTC P3300. He said Brodit are addressing this and may have the Orbit Bodit Active mounts available in a few weeks.

I spoke to Dave at DSL Developments on 7th January. He said that Brodit currently had an Orbit, were now designing a holder, and hoped to get one into test by end of January, possibly to market in February. He said he'd get back to me by email when it's available (he's developing an email list of people awaiting one!).
I would love to see their Molex adapter to use for something USEFUL like AUDIO OUT. So everybody could use the Orbit/Artemis for connecting to car stereo AUX IN.
Sorry but I have to disagree with the assumption that this mount will not work with the orbit as I am using it on my Orbit.
Yes at first it did not work so I used a bit of gentle pressure to align it and it works really well.
Not really an issue in my opinion.

Can anyone tell me how to mount the brodit holder for Artemis in your car?
There are 3 holes for screws, but I don't want to damage my car interior when installing the PocketPC car holder.
The documentation included does not say anything about how to install it
You will need a Pro-Clip to suit your vehicle, the holder will attach to that via screws, or Brodit Move-it Clip (which is a better solution as it makes it easier to remove from the vehicle) it also leaves less evidence of a mount in the car when removed - Mike

Have at long last received my XDA Orbit mount from Brodit courtesy of DslDevelopments, its a peice of cake to install (you need car specific proclip to mount it onto!) the Orbit fits nicely and feels very secure, I got the active version so phone is always being charged in the car - recommended even if it did take brodit 2 months to produce it!

i fancy that brodit active holder but it would have to be capable of connecting the device to the power supply as well as my car stereo AUX IN.
could get this sorted out with a self-built solution but i prefer having just one single cable visible in my car....

You will need to use the Passive (non powered mount) and a 3 in 1 addapter like this one http://www.easydevices.co.uk/pp/HTC_Accessories/HTC_P3300/HTC_P3300_3_IN_1_USB_ADAPTER.html
It does work very well and allows you to charge the device up, use the supplied ear phones and use the 3,5MM socket to feed the Aux input on the car.
It does not pass the earphones through as an aerial though, so you cannot use the Artemis radio when using the addapter, I have one and use it in this exact same way in the car, your other alternative is to change the stereo to one that supports Bluetooth and stream the audio to the car deck using A2DP - this works very well, but it is also very costly for a stereo that can do this - Mike
bluetooth is no good to me as i dont wanna change my car deck due to design reasons
reckon i'll actually get this sorted exactly the way you described it as brodit's active holder concept seems to be no good for audio throughput, which is a shame if you ask me

My solutions
I bought a Sony MEX-BT2500 for £90 on ebay - bluetooth streaming, brilliant!
However, there are other things I've done too...
Got the standard universal PDA holder that O2 ship sometimes, or for a fiver on ebay... it's one with sliding 'feet' at the bottom of it... then put your usb connector (either straight power or a 3-way if needed,) into your device,and slide the feet to hold it tight. With this done, gently remove the device, holding the connector in place, and stategically place a couple of drops of superglue to hold the usb connector to the feet... job done.
I then fastened my holder to a bolt-free bracket for my Passatt (another ebay find) for a perfect solution...

I've previously bought 2 Brodit docks, one passive and one active. Thats about £55 so far. As nice sa they are, I'm not wasting any more money on expensive car docks.
I understand only passive holder is released so far. Brodit normally release active holders a week or so later.
I had the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and used the specific Brodit passive holder for that device. I tried my One X in it and hey presto - it fits that holder too !
Imho, passive portrait docks are no good for the ONE X, the usb charges is on the left and the stereo jack on top. Unless you have a BT car radio, this would look ridiculously stupid if all was plugged.
I have seen this one on ebay, but I am not sure if the quality will be good enough and how hard it will be to fit in the phone and take it out again:

In either case the image would be wrong. I do not see a micro usb connection where the port on the phone is. There is a sort of "block" near the place where the pin connectors are on the phone, but it does not look very well positioned either.
Besides, what do they mean with "active"? I thought that the car mode could be activated only with the pins, not with the usb cable, or am I missing something? I have had this phone for 3 or 4 days, so I might still be missing half of the options

No, you are right, it's as wrong as some of the cheap docking station pics I saw in a docking station thread. Looks really ugly too this mount.
And I think a mere USB plug wont activate the Car mode...

Consider this: The official HTC car holder uses micro USB at the moment. Nothing uses the POGO pins as yet. If the HTC one doesnt even activate car mode then it's a bit of a swizz.
I doubt the brodit one would in any case, but I think they can be modified to do so.
EDIT : Also be aware that the picture of it is just a placeholder as the device in the holder blatantly isnt a HOX

I got my HTC car kit today and it does activate Car Mode when docked and plugged into the microUSB connection.

That is interesting news. If there is no contact with the pins there must be something else that is switching the car-mode, or else it would activate even when charging from the wall, which is not the case.
It switches to car mode and also activates Bluetooth too which is convenient for me

HTC car docks have done this for years. They do something funny to the micro usb port to send an additional signal. It can be self modified I think. Good to know though

That doesn't look right to me . The USB connection is in the wrong place for the HOX. And anyway, this doesn't appear on the official Brodit site.
