8125 htc upgrade for 8525 - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Is it possible to upgrade my 8125 ROM with the 8525 ROM from HTC. I know my phone doesnt have the PPT feature but I would like the other features offered.
Thanks

unlike pc's roms require all drives to be hardcoded into the rom
if one single driver is not 100% correct the device fail to boot and may become a brik
partly upgrades can be don by changing non core and driver part of the rom
if it's possible it will be a topic in the forum for your device
you will read about it
also 8125 & 8525 are not htc names and devices are sold as sooo many names so stating nr's that one reseller use is useless
and require people to look what those numbers to know what htc device people are asking about

JJ with GPSone Activated? Trinity rom open it...

Hi everybody!
I read that there is a new rom for the Trinity that activated the GPSone.
Is there an ability to copy the drivers to the JJ rom & to activate it also?
It's not a dream anymore!!!!
Gilgil
This is the forum for the HTC Universal.
exclusively
Chaps, with all due respect, his comment contains the phrase "Is there an ability to copy the drivers to the JJ rom & to activate it also?"
Therefore it does belong in the HTC Universal forum alright, since JJ stands for Jasjar which in turn stands for HTC Universal.
Now back on-topic: I am afraid however that there may indeed be some GPS related hardware components on board the Universal devices, but I believe it is even less than in the Trinity.
I vagely remember that among others, the antenna is not there, thus making it pointless to even try porting whatever GPS driver there is to the HTC Universal device ....
(correct me if I'm wrong)

Which ROM (already read about them yet questions linger)

So i have a att 8525 and for the past month or so been reading here and HOFO and 4winmobile and mrvanx about the rom updates. I feel confident in my ability to update but i am really unsure as what some main differences are between all of the many different versions. At first i was sure to go with Black but now after looking LVSW, Faria and ELF. I have read what they offer but i dont really get whats the big differences between them. I notice a big "selling" point is the amount of ram available for use. I DO want WM6, a few things that i need are good BT support, WIFI, 3G/data connection, my Exchange direct push to work, Remote Desktop and easy dialing (like the HTC smart dialer). So do any of these really meet my needs? i know thats a loaded question but i just cant seem to be able to differentiate between them. Thanks for any help that you can give.

My suggestion is to try them and stick with the one that most support your needs.

You say you don't want WM6, so then none of the mentioned ROMS will meet your needs as they are all WM6. This is the WM6 forum. Check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=306 for discussions about the latest WM5 ROMS.
You say you dont WM6....
but you want a good Remote Desktop client and Good bluetooth support....
both reside in WM6 and not in WM5
As i edited in my post i made a typo i do want WM6. Sorry for any confusion again.

I agree with arluckett2002, try some out.
I personally recommend the Elf, because he cooks with the ExtROM, leaving you the ability to remove unwanted apps and is built on LVSW core (very stable). It is sort of a combination between a clean fast & sleek rom, with the added benefits of some apps. But, you can remove them if you want.
Most of the rom's are good now, it is a matter of trial & error and style preference.
There is no way you get everything you want in a rom (unless you cook your own). Get the closes one (or a basic one and add the programs you need). In my experience with a Hermes phone, LVSW is the most stable. ELF which uses LVSW is almost as good as LVSW.
I update programs as they become available.

I always had this question... If a program is installed while the ROM is being upgraded (it is part of and packaged with the rom), and a new version of the application is available, can we upgrade the application without losing precious storage/program memory? Or will the upgrade disable the "read only" older version and install the new version as if it is a new application?
Good Question!!!

My understanding is that the new program will place new copies of it's files over the ones in ROM, thereby sort-of deactivating the ROM-based one, but now taking up twice the amount of space ... and if you uninstall it, you should be left with the old copy.
However, if the uninstall removes registry settings, the ROM-based one might not work anymore. I know I've "overwritten" certain files in the /Windows folder, and when I delete them, the old ROM-based ones are again visible.
Again, this is MY understanding, and I may be wrong. I would LOVE to know the truth from somebody who's a real genius with this stuff. We have soem true geniuses here, so maybe one of them can confirm or deny what I've written here.

is VP3G's version relatively stable?

So, based on your answer, the best rom currently available (at least in relation to memory) should be the Elf, since he installs all programs in ExtROM using CAB files, which can be uninstalled / overwritten etc, without taking up twice the amount of memory in case of a program update. Agree?

No, not neccesarily. There are several very clean ROMs to choose from, as well, where you can simply add what you want, period. And several only have some limited apps built in, that provide some extra functionality, and will probably not be upgraded, or you can live with the versions that are already installed. The question is best answered by each user and his/her subjective needs and desires.
On top of that, you must think about the quality of support that the cook is willing/able to provide. If you are a newbie, you would probably do best to steer away from the Elf and Black versions, since their authors are somewhat lacking in patience, although I must admit, they are extremely talented with the technology.
You really need to measure it all out from several different angles, and in the long run, only you can decide which is best for you.

VP3G v2 rom
I have been running VP3G's v2 hybrid rom for about a week. only issues i had after flashing was i needed the cingular settings cab file to configure everything that i didn't want to manually add myself. i'm still looking for the smart dialer cab that i found on here awhile back but other than that it's got everything you need, it's stable, and very fast. tomtom 6 works great with it as does any of my bluetooth devices. exchange direct push works well though i find that sometimes the phone doesn't sync cahnges back to the exchange server. so far it's the best rom i've tried for wm6. oh yah.. i'm running an ATT 8525 on ATT's network.
Damn talking about bring the thread back to life, haha. I am actually currently running VP3G v2.0.1H also. VP3G has the cingular settings build in, did that not work for you? it worked great for me. It works perfect for all my BT devices and i have no had any issues with the exchange DP. so definitely my favorite rom so far.

It will overwrite the current file, it won't take up more space.
Maybe I'm getting to old for this but seriously how many times a month does this question need to be asked and answered?????
i must be having a bad day.

Will some/any hermes apps work for similar HTC devices?

My mom is interested in getting an HTC Titan model phone which will run on her Verizon network. I could help her a lot to tweak some things on it to work better for her and i am trying to advise her if that phone will be a good idea for her to buy. But what i don't know is will she be able to set up any of the nice tweaks that are out there for the hermes onto her phone? It seems like the Titan hasn't nearly the network of users that the Hermes or Kaiser has and i don't know much about which, if any, apps and tweaks will be transferrable to that (or any other) device. If not i would be concerned that she wont be able to get as much out of that phone as i am talking it up to be, like the hermes has been for me becuase it might not have nearly the apps and tweaks
..Thanks in advance for any help
in short, no... different os language not transferable. sorry..
well it depends on what type of tweaks your looking at. Most (if not all) programs are built to run off of the phones operating system i.e. WM5, WM6, WM6.1. Im pretty sure the Titan is WM6. programs like HTC home will work, spb and all thoose others as well. If it says WM5 compatible, then your good.
As long as you dont try flashing the Hermes rom on to it then it cant hurt to experiment with various cabs which if written to run on WM5 or WM6 should be ok. For example a lot of the apps that run on tytn II also run on Hermes.
Have fun!

A question regarding another LG smartphone (the GM735)

Hi all,
I am writing from Turkey, and my question is concerning an LG GSM smartphone called the GM735. There is a thread here on XDA about rom development for this device, but it has not really gotten along any distance so I thought I'd ask here. This device is shipped out with win 6.1, there is a similar (spec sheetwise identical) device called the GM730 that is sold in other markets and LG has just come out with a win 6.5 rom for those devices. I understand (from what I've read on a Turkish board) that the 6.1 roms for both the 730 and the 735 will work on each other but the 6.5 rom is not flashing correctly and in many instances it's just bricking the phone. What I am really curious about is if LG uses some sort of a device lock like SPL or something similar. Has anyone ran across anything like and SPL unlocker for the LGs?
Currently there is an Ukranian fellow who has somehow modified a 6.1 rom to include 6.5 interface (the rom says its 6.1 but the menu and all else is 6.5) but it is very immature and nonfunctional in many ways (ie no sound, no BT, no wi-fi, etc etc etc). So what I'm really hoping for is maybe some sort of an unlocker so that we can flash the LG released 730 win 6.5 rom on our 735s.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers.
yea id stick to the threads in the general section. or get enough people to vote for your own subforum. thats what we did.
p.s. ive searched all across these boards and not seen a SPL for any lg fone. i believe its a diff file structure than htc devices and doesnt require the same thing in order to flash.

[Q] Basic Software Questions

I recently replaced my FUZE with the AT&T Tilt 2 (currently has AT&T stock ROM). I have a few questions about some features that I miss from my Fuze and the non-stock ROMs that I tried on the FUZE.
1. What is "My Location" in World Clock that I had with my FUZE (TAEL ROM) that I do not have with my Tilt 2? In other words, what application is it part of, and what does it take to install it on my phone?
2. Can different radios be installed without installing Hard-SPL, which I assume requires the phone to be unlocked (and AT&T will not provide the unlock code until I have had the phone for 90 days).
3. What is "Manila", is it a package (like MS Office is a package of applications, Word, etc.)?

1. "My Location" is a location service packaged in Manila/Sense UI. It was made available in Sense 2.1 and Sense 2.5. It uses cell towers to determine your location, and it updates your weather/clock if you changed location/time zones. I don't have a Tilt 2 variant of the Touch Pro2, so I don't know if your stock ROM contains TouchFlo3D or Sense 2.1.
2. ROMs and radio-roms can only be installed with HSPL. HSPL does not require your phone to be [SIM-]unlocked by AT&T. Just read the first two posts of the HSPL thread.
3. Manila is the codename of HTC's user-interface. It is also known as TouchFlo3D or Sense. It is where you have a slider at the bottom, which contains "Home Tab, People Tab, Messages Tab, etc.".
sumflipnol, thanks for the information. My Tilt 2 came with TF3D. I look forward to the day when I can get my phone unlocked so I can start playing with ROMs as I did with my Fuze. I will try the HSPL. Thanks again...
Mate, that is the point of HSPL.... So you can use ANY ROM you choose on your new toy without it being unlocked by the carrier (I'm pretty sure if you do a search you'll find sim unlock programs too..)...
Time to do some reading yourself...
Cheers...
Thanks for the information ultramag69. I was always under the assumption that you needed to have the phone unlocked in order to install non-stock ROMs. I think a lot of information is presumed to be common knowledge. You've probably heard the saying, "if you're not getting the answer you're looking for, you're probably not asking the right question." That's definatley the case with me, I don't usually know the right question.
Cheers back at you...
