Does anyone have earlier ROM for Cingular 8525? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I am a newbie and not myself a developer, so if this question or my accessing this list is out of line, let me know. I am looking for a way to restore the former ROM that was on my device before upgrading.
Cingular/ATT just sent out an upgrade on their 8525 ROM, not to Windows Mobile 6, but just a more enhanced Windows Mobile 5 with push to talk, and some other changes.
After upgrading the ROM, my backup file for my Personal Databases will not restore. The Sprite Backup (5.1) backup file was the only storage I had of important data at least for the last four months, when I stopped being able to activesync it. The support staff at Sprite said they got my personal databases file to work, so I know the file itself is not corrupted, and the data is there, but every time I try to restore it to my 8525 (ie, following a hard reset, with and without the sbu file that Sprite created for moving from one ROM to another)... every time I try to restore it, it corrupts my Calendar and Contacts programs, bringing in no data, and making the Contacts program unusable.
My best guess is that the only way I can regain access to this data is to restore to the old ROM, then fix the ActiveSync problem, and save the data that way, then reupgrade to the new ROM, and sync that.
I give all this detail in case someone has a better suggestion as to what might be causing the Personal Database file not to restore, and not to work following the upgrade.
Short of that, I'd be interested if anyone can show me where I might restore the old ROM. Private replies are accepted.
Tom Bartlett

Here's the original 1.34.502 ROM for the 8525. If you're needing the UNofficial 2.06 leaked release, I don't have that one. . . sorry

Thanks so much!
Tom Bartlett

I am not sure how to use what the link downloaded. Perhaps my mistake was in downloading it to my laptop, for later use? It came as a large zip file, with three RAW files.
How do I use that download to change my ROM?
My guess is that I'll need to have my 8525 synced in Active Sync, and do the hit "run" rather than "save as" ?
Tom

CRAP!! Disregard that file. . . it's the wrong one. I'm uploading the CORRECT one right now.
I'm soooo sorry. . . I'll be back with the correct link as soon as it's uploaded.
Here it is. . . the CORRECT file.

Can anyone HELP ???.........

Before swapping my XDAIIi with my new EXEC I made a back-up on my SD CARD. BUT THE EXEC CANOT RESTORE FROM THIS LOCATION!!!..... Is there anyway of recovering my data????? thank you anyone out there with more knowledge and expertise who could help.........
Find another device running the same ROM version as your old device and restore your data to that device. The extraxt what you need and active sync. The transfer all data to the new device.
Thanks.....It was exactly what I thought. But I have tried this on 4 different machines.....and they all crashed or froze and it just didnt happen........
Is there any other possible way!? :?
When you say you made a backup on your SD card, I'm guessing you mean a backup of the entire XDAIIi system (including all your files, all program files and all ROM files).
If so, you can't restore a backup from an XDAIIi onto an XDA Exec. They're two completely different machines and the backup will be incompatible.
Like badgerboybadger says, you need to extract from your backup only those files that contain your personal data: your documents, templates, ringtones and so on. Leave behind anything connected with the device or installed programs. Then you can copy your personal data onto your Exec and it will work. If you want to transfer installed programs from the IIi to the Exec then you'll need to reinstall them on the Exec...
....silicon,
Yes Indeed, I did make a full system backup!
and you are talking about something i was not aware it is possible to do???
lets see......
you say......"you need to extract from your backup only those files that contain your personal data: your documents, templates, ringtones and so on. Leave behind anything connected with the device or installed programs. Then you can copy your personal data onto your Exec and it will work"......

Yeah - I guess that was what I was suggesting, but I've got no idea how to do this! Sorry.
I wasn't sure which way you'd have done your back up or whether it's possible to extract particular files. I suppose it must be, but I've never done it.
If you still have your XDAIIi then can you copy specific files off it?
Alternatively, do you still have a synchronised documents folder on the PC to which you used to connect it? That should have most of the documents that you'll want to keep.
If not I don't know what to suggest.
Providing your old PDA is still available, you really need a backup program that you can run on both PDAs. For example, something like Sunnysoft's Backup Manager - even a time-limited trial edition may be sufficient. Select and back up the required files/data to SD-card on the old PDA, then move the card to the new PDA. Install the backup program there and recover the files/data with that.
Just be careful of the different program versions, try not to copy system files across, and be prepared to do it a couple of times (or more) until you get it right.

Back up and restore programs, setting

hi guys,
I've been following all the different threads and topics for a while and it has been a very nice friendly place to be in.
Anyhow.. i would like to know if someone can direct me to how to make a cab file which will input all my setting, owner name, install program a, b, c, d, e, f, g and etc then will fix up the registry key and enter all the serials i have brought in the past. This way i don't have to reinstall each program (both cab and exe) again after upgrade the ROM
I'musing Black 2.5 atm and looking forward to get balck 3 today
Thanks guys
Ditto!
I think such app would be very useful for all of us beta testers
Or taster of new flavours!
Maybe our chefs already has something like this that they use!
Some are in the works
JJ and walshieau are working on projects similar to this.
JJ has "Pimp my Black" which is HTweakC on steriods and walshieau is building an app that will restore your carrier settings.
Loading apps back on are easy, as long as you sync with a PC. They never uninstall from your PC, just simply re-check the ones you want to reload on your device and there they are again.
Backup programs like SPB and Sprite have known issues between builds, as I'm sure you know since you posted as if you've read the forums on this subject. Kudos.
It would be really cool if JJ and walshieau would combine forces and make that one killer app for all customizations to be saved to a file and restored once flashed, and if a customization were to have a format or length issue, then toss an error and let the user know. (hint, program spec??? )
I keep a backup on storage card of each of the roms I've tried...just in case.....I wonder if this is misguided somehow.
Thanks.
This is my current method:
put all the cab files (inc carrier setting -offline by walshieau) in the storage card and also along with all the serial numbers in there.
I tended to do things on the go (out of the house/ no pc) so if i happened to flash my phone before i leave my house then i will be able to install all the apps back by the time i get to work. Altho it's a lengthy instalaltion process (swapping the apps, folder, serial number, folder, app, enter rego).
i actually i was going to ask so if SPB backup and other back up will not work properly right? Say, i am using black 2.5 and backup here.... then upgrade to black 3 version then if i use restore program.. it will restore me back to 2.5 instad of 3 ... is this information correct? i read it somewhere....
I used SBP backup on Black 2.0 and then flashed 2.5 and restored from the 2.0 backup. It worked and shows the new com manager skin but it reports as 2.0 in the "about" screen so I know that this isn't the right way to go. Knowing that 3.0 was comming soon and considering that the device works great I've left it this way.
When 3.0 comes out I will load my apps and data without SBP. Then after it's up I will make a backup of the fresh 3.0 installation.
i am interested in such tools too although using the Dopod D810 aka Trinity.

I am using Sprite 5.1 and it does the backup and migration from Black 2.0 to 2.5 very well only have to redo my Wifi and Email settings, all my apps works fine. The FAQ to do it is available at Sprite's website on doing devie upgrade or OS upgrades with Sprite and WM5, works fine with WM6
Be aware that SPB Backup and Sprite Backup cant restore backups on different ROM's. Mobile Backup 2007 says it can but I havent tried it yet..
Dunno if I can post the follwing link but its the place you can get Mobile Backup:
http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=157755&highlight=mobile+backup
I have Sprite but last time I used it on WM5 after a hard reset, it would not restore my data So I dumped it and went with SPB which has worked flawlessly ever since. I just don't see how any backup would work properly when restoring onto a different rom, I got away with it but I know that it's not 100% right now.
i was thinking of making my own cab file where specific to install
A, B, C, D....... G software (cab files), then install carrier setting, patch all the serial numbers to each softwares, change the look and all the setting in WM6 to match my like... damn it sound so hard and i don't even know how to make a cab file...
is something like this possible to learn?
I am slowly reducing the number of cabs I need to keep on my storage card by combining and creating them with my set ups.
As I have limited knowledge, this involves using sktracker to see exactly what changes were made in the registry when I changed a setting, and then using cabmanager to create a cab containing the reg settings (or say for spb weather, adding the changes to the original cab).
I understand that patching in the serials is not straightforward as it is not meant to be easy by design.
Am having trouble with some settings like email account setup, but am working through others.
crazyC: Im having the same trouble with email accounts. It doesnt look like they are saved in the registry settings, must be in the database somewhere.
Also if you add your own registry settings to the original Cab files do you know what order things are done? ie. if it writes your reg file then installs the app it might overwrite yours.

Yeah I don't know anything about creating the database entries so am going to have to leave that.
As for the second point - I am kind of winging it so to speak, so no I don't realy know.....
As I said, am most pleased with my custom SPB weather cab, as this installs the BBC template and sets up my work and home locations as the two tabs, linking off the bbc weather source.
Have also modified the Phone Alarm cab for my skin and settings, but as there is anew beta every few days at the mo, not so useful
Am about to start work on O2 plus, and setting up my shortcuts etc on install.
looking for mobile backup 2007...is this the one
trial here
CrazyC-
been messing around with the same ideas and it's driving me crazy ha.. Do you have to manually duplicate the registry entries you want when you're adding them to the original cab file (phone alarm, for instance)?
I was trying to extract the relevant registry entries, and have a program that would let me pack them into a cab, but everything i found wanted me to manually create registry keys..
any thoughts? cause it's flashing season ha
The safest way when going between ROMs is reinstalling. I use a few techniques.
1. Install CAB files from SD card. Then you just install them one by one by tapping. Installing from Activesync can be problematic memorywise as the CAB will copy down to main memory and then be deleted after installation. This can be an issue if you have too many apps to install at once.
2. Unless the new ROM has the same device ID, email settings really have to be manually entered each time. I experimented with workarounds but they simply don't work.
3. After you install all your programs, import registry keys containing your common settings. Before erasing the previous setting, do a registry dump and then search for and find those registry keys that contain the settings. Most (but not all) are in HKEY Current User. Be careful. Don't import stuff that might break the new ROM.
4. Copy files or shortcuts from old ROM to new one. Careful though - if you are going to copy directories, use Total Commander or something. SPB Backup and WM File Explorer will REMOVE the old contents of a directory and replace it with only the stuff you have in your new copy of the directory! Total Commander only updates the new items.
5. Unfortunately, the only way to REMOVE files or registry keys (short of writing a DLL file or fancy XML?) is to manually search and delete them. I think you could probably use Mortscript to automate this but not worth the time probably unless you are flashing every day.
Between copying certain files and registries, many of my programs end up 'pre registered' on the new system. (SPB time, etc.)
Actually, I make a cab file with my preferred settings and files. I just click and go. This covers pretty much everything except email. Unfortunately the program I use cost 89$... but when I consider my billable hours, it's worth the saved time over the long run.
I can get all programs + settings in place in about 40 minutes now.
Actually, I am using visual studio 2005 and making the adjustments to the emulator image, whilst watching the registry in the remote registry viewer. Once have identified the keys, I export them as reg files and then simply import them into cabmanager.
Depends on if you have access to VS2005.
I am sure there is a simpler way, (and am happy to learn it) but as I have occassional access to VS2005, this was how I decided to do it. Am using the WM6 SDK as well of course.
Because I keep updating the Phone Alarm beta, I actually modified the cab for the VisDaPhone skin to include my modified icons, and also to install the PA export file. Just running that cab after installing Phone alarm, and then importing the theme etc works for me. I did roll it all into one on an earlier version of PA, so it all started as per my settings, but then there was a new beta......

I reckon (thanks to the exchange server) I can be back up in twenty!
If I can sort out the O2plus setup then I will reduce that as well.
I keep a word document on my sd card with a step by step guide for myself with serial numbers etc and settings.

Moving PIM from WM5 to WM6?

This should be easy to search for.. and yes I did find the PIM Backup thread.. and yes I wish I had used it...
Note: I do NOT have Outlook sync as an option.. so I need/needed a way to do this without going via a PC.
So I tried 2 methods:
a) Database backup with Sprite Backup
b) copied pim.vol to my Storage Card
What I'm finding post-WM6-upgrade is that I can read my PIM data.. but I cannot create new PIM data (appts, contacts).
Do I have any practical way to recover (short of flashing back to WM5 and using PIM Backup?)
Thanks,
Mike
Confused.
AFAI understand, you seems to have backed up with Sprite Backup and copied the pim.vol. And you have flashed into WM6, now unable to get these info back.
If so, you may want to try the WM5 emulator (from M$) for the PC.
Try PIM-Backup??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
works a treat.

Yep. Held out all this time, watching the ROMs and finally thought it was worth the plunge.
Mike
The best thing you could do is start using exchange. Your PIM data is right there, all you do is sync once youve flashed and your contacts/calendar etc... is back on the device.
DeniaL's service is good, a $10 donation isnt much to ask for a good service especially with exchange 2007 (so you get HTML mail in WM6). Youl get push email aswell, if somebody emails you at (for example) [email protected] it instantly arrives at your device.
I do not want my personal PIM mixed into my work environment (which is my only PC). So I am mostly self-contained on the Hermes. Perhaps DeniaL's service would help me work around that... its a little beyond my knowledge scope (unix guy)
I use my work PC to install apps, and move things on/off the storage card. Not as convenient as it could be, but hopefully makes a little (if wacky) sense.
For the WM5 downgrade, I have the link to the "WM5 Downgrade guide v2".. could I cheat the steps by using ROM #3 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302092 (since I was Cingular before, tho a slightly older version)?
Thanks,
Mike
I've been playing with PIMBackup... what I've found so far...
I can rename the WM6 compatible pim.vol to temp name and copy in my old pim.vol
PIMBackup will extract and save off the Appts and Tasks. I can see them with Verbose. It does not seem to be able to read the Contacts.
The WM6 contacts program also barfs.
PI2007 is able to read the contacts, but doesn't seem to have any way to backup/export.
Back to some more fiddling...
Mike

pim.vol create/repair/restore/extract on desktop

Please post all utilites for handling/copying/extracting/repairing/
restoring/upgrading etc for pim.vol
I have backed up a pim.vol and changed my device with same OS WM 5.0 however when the pim.vol is restored the contacts do not appear.
1)Is there any software to read pim.vol and extract it in txt,csv file.
2)Is there any software to rewrite pim.vol to fit in newer roms.
3)Is there any software to upgrade or repair pim.vol files.
4)Is there any way to add data from pim.vol to Outlook .
5)I have two pim.vol files both of different devices but WM5,
Is their way to interchange data between them so that each other device
has data of the other device. (One is empty in my case)
Thank You
girish Kadel
Same problem
I have a similar problem. I would like to fix a failing pim.vol. If I put it on my device I get "no service" on the phone and can't access my calendar or contacts.
I found a perl script that parses pim.vol for contacts, but it only extracted about 20 out of over 100.
I have exactly the same problem as drkosse except that my contact list is around 4000 and I just updated like 5% of it last week without sync. So I really need it back up. Any tools to fix it?
Hey,
I am also urgently needing some application to read or extract my contacts from a pim.vol.
Any suggestions>?
I thought there is an answer for this...
I would also be highly interested in something that could do that.
yes im having the same problem! i went froma moto Q to HTC Mogul 6.1
i copied the pim file from the storage card after renaming the first one.
the soft reset. then clicked contacts and it just shuts out!
im not sure what to do now. i need those numbers!
lol
I had the same problem, flashed my Omnia with a new rom, forgotten to extract all contacts appointments etcpp, so had searched for a tool to extract the information from the pim.vol (which i saved wisly before)
had found this:
http://www.phatware.com/index.php?q=product/details/dbexplorer
looks like it works, doing now an extract of the data and restore into the systems pim.vol (else it won't work, the pim.vol's are incompatible through different roms ): )
I also really do need a tool for repairing my pim.vol DB. Isn't there any solution available yet? Calendar and Contacts won't start anymore, also I get shown thet there is no Service available, if I use my broken pim.vol. If I rename it and it gots replaced with a newone, everthing is working fine again, but all my data is lost, of course. Also DBExplorer isn't working for me, it says that file is no valid database or broken. :-( Can anyone help me pleaze! Greetz, BKC

Whatsapp doesnt restore Backups

atm im jumping between different roms while waiting for next cm release. i also use whatsapp. everywhere on the net its is said that WA is supposed to ask me to restore previously made backups. BUT IT NEVER DID!
does anyone know how to restore those backups? or better: whats the problem with ace/WA? i have tons of backups, but could never use them-.-
things i already did:
- install, then add backup
- put backup into sd, then install
- searched here and found a tool that was supposed to show the chats in browser (and it failed hard (XD), what doesnt matters, cuz it doesnt solve the problem)
these chatts dont contain highly important information, but it would be very nice to have them back
thanks in advance
hmm me use whatsapp too.. as long as i remember... i never make backups.. but after switching roms.. it always ask me to restore from backup or not.. dunno either..
there is a possibility to manually make backups of WA chats. i saved the folder, flashed, put the folder back, installed: nothing happened

i switch roms often too. and whatsapp.. well it does ask me to restore from the backup..
u could try an alternative - use titanium backup to backup the application+data.
that way when u restore from titanium, u will have ur messages back.
i dont need titanium for that. the files it rstores the chats with are at /data/data/com.whatsapp
i had an old nandroid backup (stock rom), extracted those files, copied them in their place (see above) and it "worked". i dont get asked to restore, but the chats are "just there". and you cant tell me this is normal. this is only possible if you are rooted. afaik no stock rom is usually rooted
but even the official wa help states, that ONLY the folder on SD card has to be copied to new device/new rom and it should work. WhyTF it doesnt do it for me?
€: sry fogot that: the nand-BU is old as hell. the chats i want to restore are from a rom already deleted/overwritten so restoring via titanium would be a bit hard (cuz theres no backup of that rom. there was no reason for that)
Can someone where the backup works, can tell me if you have a ".crypt" file or not?
seems that "my" WA cant read its own encrypted DBs -.-
it worked when transforming the crypted DB into an unencrypted DB

I've just encountered this problem too, lost all my messages of over 2 years! I too have ".crypt" file but it doesn't ask me to restore it. Did you find a solution? Please say yes!!

worked well and i have all my conversations back.
hope i could help
Saw that, and yes it works well. Obviously better than nothing, but not the same as getting them back in the phone. I've opened a support issue with WhatsApp, maybe a future release can resolve this.
cheers!
if you encrypt them with the tool, WA will restore them and you will have youre stuff "back in the phone"
if you get a response from official wa, please share =)

You mean, if you decrypt the database file with the tool Whatsapp Xtract. Yes, that should work.
[TOOL] Whatsapp Backup Messages Extractor
Decrypt, then copy the decrypted file (msgstore.db instead of msgstore.db.crypt) onto the folder /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases, make sure it's the only database file inside that folder and then newly install WhatsApp. It should ask you to import the backup during the process of installation.
Thanks you ztedd, that makes more sense! Are you saying that only decrypted files get restored? That's not the impression the WhatsApp website gave me.

I copied the file msgstore.db.html from the tool to the database directory and the delete the ".html" ending.
