Installing software in a OS.nb - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Hey everyone,
I have some problems while I am playing with my OS.nb.
I know how to flash the phone, extract and pack the NBH. However, I am looking a way to modify/add/delete the softwares/components inside the OS.nb. I know how to add or remove a file in the OS.nb, I just cant find a way to add a software in it. (I know how to add a file, but what i mean is a "software", which is a group of files, and some registries depending on each other, how do u get all those information from a cab/exe?)

Search for the "Pandora Kitchen" or the "Core Kitchen for hermes", these will allow you do (with a little work on your part) what you need. Look specifically at the "CAB to OEM", and remember to create an initflashfiles.txt that says where each file goes.
Core kitchen is probably better if you want to do some serious cooking, whereas pandora has everything there already to include or exclude.
One word of warning though, Core Kitchen does have a couple of bugs. The only show-stopper I've found is the splash screen generator panel doesn't add the padding required for a hermes device. Not a big problem if you have HardSPL, but it will cause your first flash to hang if you use it!
If you want to replace your splash screens (by including them at the end RUU_Signed.nbh stage in Dutty's tool) then use the guide on mrvanx's site (google mrvanx).
Good luck, and remember to read the forum posts and wiki extensively, this stuff isn't easy for a reason (you are rebuilding an entire operating system).

Custom ROMs

I know this has been asked many times before as I have been searching the forum and read wiki, but how do you take the current rom off your universal so that it can be edited/backed up and put back on as a released rom would be?
I really want the dump so i can input all my connection/email settings and small programs I like, and use it as a (near prefect/instant) backup when hard resting, i understand about putting items in the ext_rom and editing the config file for auto run.
After reading a thread somewhere, downloaded WinCE Cab Manager (http://www.ocpsoftware.com) then looked into some of the cabs on my ext_rom, where it comes to installing registry entries will they have to be entered via .xml files, or will a simple .reg file work and be entered?
At the moment I have one of the WM6_prerelease roms, is this why many of the things i have read will not work , if so i will downgrade to WM5 to try this, but from what I read it seem just the ext_rom was upgraded because there was only nk.nbf file, no ms_.nbf so i guess its more of a add on rather than a full OS. I've used all sorts of tools, inculeding the rom tool in the Universal service guide and the instructions in there, buzz's instructions and many i cant remember off top my head...
All help will be appreciated,
thanks
Why not just use a backup program?
@Frosty
I think you are confused.
You have read the forum but have not fully understood.
Radio_.nbf is the radio part.
ms_.nbf is the extended rom part.
nk.nbf is the M$ part.
so nk.nbf = os
ms_.nbf = ext_rom
radio_.nbf = no point asking...
but can nk.nbf be os and ext_rom?
I am still very interested in cooking my on rom
still curious for the answers to questions asked earlier
Yes it is, see this other post about cooking
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=251710
There a link to explain how to split the original nkn.bf file into the 2 separate files.
yeah, i've read that and downloaded the app previously, used o2's latest wm5 rom, the thing I want to do is get my rom from my exec now (wm6 with my settings)
being a beginner to this cooking, how do I remove applications and insert new ones into the roms? some that are installed are not in the ext rom:
tweaks
small apps (x button, soft rest, etc.)
please don't take it as I want to be given all the answers with no work, the internet is so larger and a lot of things I've been finding are based on previous htc devices, such as before Buzz had his universal

How to cook?

Hi Chefs,
I want to cook a BigStorage/Light Edition of the new O2 Germany Rom. What should i do?
My my first thoughts: I extract the os.nb of the exe file, load it in the Rom Koch...OK, now, it's getting difficult...I want to remove for example Feedback, ringtones, example pics and vids, old office, games, windows live, homezone plugin etc. I don't know, which files i have to delete. Is there a list, which files belong to which programms?
Can i brick my phone, if i delete a wrong file?
Is it dangerous to flash my hermes with a selfcoocked rom (BADBLOCKS)?
Is that the right way to create a big storage rom?
What shouldnt i forget?
thnx
PS: pleas don't flame me...

if you have HardSPL as the bootloader before you flash and are just flashing OS only upgrades you should be ok...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
jepp...ok, thats nice, so i can try without bricking my hermes.
can i just delete the files without changing user/default registry/flashinitfiles?
Is there a documentation for which files belong to which app, for example WindowsLive?
Windows live stuff is normally in directories called "WindowsLive*" inside the SYS folder.
Just play about, it's a fun way to learn and with HardSPL you shouldn't brick your device (for example I messed up a splash screen creation by not adding the padding required for the hermes. Looked horrible, didn't boot, but put it into three color bootloader screen and was able to flash a fixed version easily).
sorry I didn't reply in the other thread.
the software is somewhat modular - in that if you remove all of the Windows Live folders or Entertainment folders, you should remove all of that component.
Under /SYS/SQM is a .rgu file. The first entry is "Enabled"=dword:00000001. Change that to 00000000 to disable feedback.
Note that some kitchens uses an options.xml to allow BuildOS to determine what gets installed. The one for the files in /SYS uses a single one in /SYS.
I'd suggest grabbing a kitchen and following the directions. If you got HardSPL installed, and are careful, you should do well.
I "bricked" my phone twice in the first hour I started because I tried flashing a Wizard formated extended rom to the Hermes... gotta learn somehow
thnx mattk...
can i use the bepes rom kitchen or pandoras rom kitchen only with the included WM6Rom or can i swap the OEM,SYS Folders and the os.nb with the included?
What should i do with the XIP Folder?

ROMDonalds Kitchen v1.0 - The Educational Kitchen - UPDATED 01/08/07

FOREWORD:
I would like to keep this thread EXPLICITLY for people who want to learn how to MANUALLY cook and the questions surrounding the topic.
If you are a "GOD MODE" and you are more interested in insulting people for trying to learn DONT read this thread

If you are answering a question PLEASE answer it fully and as simply as possible.
WELCOME TO ROMDonalds!!!!!!!!!
This kitchen is designed for those users, like me, who have been using their devices for a while and want to learn the methodologies behind hand cooking a ROM. By hand cooking I mean manually adding OEM software, adding CAB’s so they don’t have to be installed after flashing, hand editing registry hives and such like.
Don’t get me wrong GUI kitchens are excellent but, to fully understand the processes that go on behind cooking your own ROM,I feel that it should be done manually so you can see and hopefully understand what happens at each stage, so you could say that this is more of an educational kitchen.
.
.
How It Works
There are various stages to cooking a ROM, so when you run “ROMDonalds.exe” you will find a group of files, ordered by number, logically, you start at number 1, and follow the process through to completion.
After running “ROMDonalds.exe” you will find a new folder on your desktop called “ROM Donalds” this is your kitchen.
Inside each of these files are all the various pieces of software you will need to complete that particular stage of the process in addition to this there is an instruction manual that walks you through each step, with background information on what is happening not just the required steps.
.
.
The Kitchen Software
All of the software in this kitchen is available in other kitchens in various forms, some of the software has been slightly edited from original form but not by much, so I do not profess to having produced some revolutionary cooking software as it all currently exists.
The difference is that instead of having a folder full of tools with strange looking names, which would be intimidating and confusing to a new user, everything is sectioned out with instructions.
.
.
Thanks:
Special Thanks to Midget_1990 for helping with the software
Thanks to all those who originally designed the softwares used in this kitchen, namely:
Tadzio - for his tools
bepe - for his tools

also thanks to anyone I forgot (sorry about that!)

First to say you thank you. I was waiting for this. Great work Man.
hi - I like the name , i too believe in alot of manual cooking because i feel its the best way to learn. I use most of your tools and also htc rom tool by dark simpson. I'll have a look at your animated startup screens - been looking for those.
well done mate you deserved it. although i busy with my new toy in my sig I will give your kitchen a try to see what i can dish up for myself.

You will find the kitchen very familiar, it has nothing you wont have used already!! (although you may want to look at the advanced tools folder!!)
i would really appreciate it if you could cook and follow my instructions just to see in there are any obvious mistakes (Other than spelling & grammar!!)
Thanks alot
Great work man... will give it a spin later. Thanks
Nice work mate

This is great, easy to digest information, great work piecing all this together and writing the pdf.
One thing I must say is I very much do enjoy the use of the visual package selection method, manualley cooking in the cabs is great but being able to check a box next to what I want is always a plus.

I like GUI cooking too, please dnt think i am belitteling other Kitchen designers!
MY problem's with the GUI cooking method are:
1) YOU DONT LEARN ANYTHING - THE MOST IMPORTANT PART - THE IDEA OF THIS KITCHEN IS TO TEACH PEOPLE WHAT GOES ON WHEN COOKING
2) its lazy, as the install screen of ROMDonalds says "Getting Something Is Good, Doing It Yourself Is Better!!!" (im not saying its not a great idea that people can customise their own ROMs that fast, and have whatever they want included)
3) its hard to modify an already cooked rom (i.e. Black Satin on Pandora)
4) its not guaranteed to work, stupid errors thrown up with no option to fix
5) if you cant change the base ROM you are stuck with it, also what you think is a good base, someone else may say sucks and visa versa
6) there is way more OEM software about than CAB's so if you manually cook, you are not restricted by what is included int he kitchen
I created a kitchen like this so i could learn in the way I WANTED to learn, not with some of the hap-hazard instructions there are available.
I found that through using the instructions i have published i have learned alot about the stages of cooking, so now, when i look at other kitchens, and it tells me to "Dump Rom" or "extract XIP" etc, i know wats going on!!
(also when errors in the GUI kitchens come up, i have a MUCH better understanding of where and why the error has occured!!)
I hope people find it as usefull as i have!
I love this kitchen I have allready learned TONS from it, I am just saying it would be nice to be able to use this kitchen AND be able to use a GUI for adding more packages as well.
But I completly understand your thinking and I definently have allready learned alot!!!
And again I appreciate your taking the time to put this together with a great PDF walkthru.
I am also wondering if there is anyway to delete something from the windows dir after it has been copied elsewhere ? or if you can move files instead of copying them. I am looking to cooking in Opera and it requires a few files in a few diffrent dirs and I would hate to have copies of these files in the windows dir and the dirs they are suppost to be in.

you mean to create 1 folder called "Opera" and have all of the dir's and files for Opera inside that folder so you can drop it into the windows dir on a dumped ROM?
this can be done altho im not sure how, i want to include this into my instructions but as i said im not sure on how to go about it, JJ did it with some of the black ROMs, Satin definately.
only thing i can suggest is to dump SATIN and see how JJ did it!!
If you find anything please post it here so i can include it, and ill do the same.
Unable to find default.hv & user.hv in dump folder and a couple other questions
Hello Bennec83,
Thanks for the informative kitchen tools!! I am hoping to create a custom made ROM from these tools.
Question:
I have dumped the recently released Dopod ROM without difficulty and am now at the stage (stage C before C.1) of finding the two files in the dump folder: default.hv and user.hv ...I performed a search and then manually looked for the files without success. I have followed the format for dumping and I may be missing something but these files are not appearing...Any suggestions??
Also, if I wanted to delete say windows auto update or other folders in this ROM without creating a conflict, this dumping section would be the appropriate area, correct?? I guess this is the part where trial and error occurs...correct? I am trying to maximize storage space without conflicts.
Thanks so much for your time,

GREAT work m8! Just read your cooking instructions and they are superb. I haven't tried the kitchen yet, but from what I read it is pretty straight forward and very well explained !
Thanks for creating this, I will test in the following days and let you know of my experience
Again, great work and keep us posted of any changes...
Twist in regards to cooking in opera - there is no way to delete the files after they are copied out of the rom. I know it seems wasteful but that is the way it is. Most cooks hence keep the inclusion of this type of app down to a minimum because of storage space. Would recommend compression of opera.exe to use less storage memory - and find the oem package so you can use the rgu and initflashfiles.txt from there to make life easier.

HI,
default.hv and user.hv are a pain in the arse to find, you need to change the folder options so you can "show hidden files and folders" AND uncheck "hide protected operating system files" (see screenshot)
then the next thing i do is order everything by type, then scroll down to "HV File" and you will find them both
with regards to your second question, this is about dumping and cooking a ROM.
a ROM is originally compiled from an operating system, to change features inside the OS you need to dump the ROM differently as this kitchen (at the moment) is only for adding and removing APPs and tweaks.
To do what you want you need to get the "SYS" "OEM" and "XIP" folders from your ROM, swap them into a different kitchen (one that allows you to run something called "BuildOS.exe" )
I will be releasing one here, but the first thing to do before you start messing with the OS of your phone, is to get used to doing the methods in this kitchen.
It is my Birthday today, so i cannot put together a "BuildOS" package and instructions today but I will, soon!!
hope this helps

1st time cook a little confused

Hi. I've read hundreds of posts and followed dozens of tutorials. I'm aiming to gain an understanding of what actually happens during the rom cooking process and I think I'm getting there. I've used loads of different toolkits and kitchens and most recently I've been using 'romdonalds' which has given me a better understanding.
However I'm a bit confused about the difference between the dump directory with loads of files and folders, and the OEM/SYS versions of these which I've seen when using packagetool and buildos. I know how to go from the 'flat' structure to the oem/sys structure, but I don't know how to go back again.
I'd also like is to know what really happens behind the scenes when you click the go button in buildos.exe.
TIA
Matt
I could really use a little help to understand what's going on here. If there's some clear explanation of what actually happens during cooking that I've missed, could someone point it out to me please? I've searched thoroughly, read extensively, and pulled my hair painfully... but I just don't get it. I've analysed batch files in just about every kitchen there is but I've reached a point where I need some help.
If there's some unwritten quid-pro-quo requirement that I've missed before I can ask a question then tell me that too - I'm no freeloader, I've just donated to Slither2006 for his cube, and when I've fully grokked the process I'll write up everything I've learned in a really clear guide, I promise.
I'm not an idiot either - I was a technical architect at a large UK ISP until recently, doing stuff like building a huge virtualised server farm with custom management tools and a homebrewed iSCSI /LVM2 snapshot system that blows away anything commercially available, and now I work for myself... I've used HTC devices since the Blue Angel, also an Exec and now a hermes... but I could really use a hand here.
Thanks!
I suspect you are quite a bit ahead of me here, but here goes.
The OEM/Sys folders are just part of the Dump folder, but extracted and turned into a more logically arranged order for manipulation.
When you run buildos it just takes these and a few other bits such as the XIP section and puts it back in a format for rebuilding.
Best I can do I am afraid.
Thanks for your reply crazyc. It's getting a little clearer now. Can anyone else shed any light? Ideally I'd like to know exactly what buildos does to turn the organised folders back into the dumped ones.
Piecing it all together:
A: I know how to get the dump folder from a source rom (nbhextract->nbsplit->imgfsfromnb->imgfstodump).
B: I know how to make changes to the dump directory manually (add/delete files; extract/convert .hv files to .rgu; edit .rgu files and reconvert to .hv; edit initflashfiles.dat to create shortcuts on first boot)
C: I know that instead of all that I could convert the dump directory to the organised oem/sys pair (pkgtool) and know that in theory I could manage that with BuildOS.exe to integrate oem packages with the option.xml file in them - but I don't understand what's happening here relative to (B) above
D: I can turn the dumped folder (but not the oem/sys folder) back into a flashable rom (imgfsfromdump->imgfstonb->nbhtool)
Can someone who really understands what's going on explain where I'm confused?
Thanks
Matt
Here is my take about cooking....
When the dumped OS has all the rgu files in tact then spliting the dump folder as OEM and SYS will work.
Where as some OS do not have rgu file in them (some cooks prefer to cook this way...all OEM OS have rgu files). In this case you would have to use only the dump folder and edit default and user.hv to add and delete stuff. You cannot use package tool for this method.
You sure can turn OEM and SYS back to ROM, just use the right kitchen (Pandora, Bepe Kitchen, etc)
Hope this helps.

Looking for infomation regarding cooking roms

Hi to all chefs,
I am looking for as much info on rom cooking as possible as to understand the process that is happening,
what i want to know is when the batch file is run this launches other commands could somebody please explain what is happening behind the scenes
when the buildos runs it processes all the files into a temp folder,
now my most important question is,
when building up the registry, what is the order that the files are processed, by dsm filename? package filename?
also when are the mxip_******.provxml files processed (reg esttings added to the registry and in what order
how is the best way to add a custom mxip_****.provxml to garantee my setting don't get changed,
also if there is enough useful answers posted, i will edit this post to make a time-line in post2 to help others new to cooking there own roms,
then infos wanted for timeline are the background into whats happening in each program launched (buildos, nbhtool etc) from pressing the cook batch file through to windows being flashed and autorun kicking in, sdautorun if exists, then the end would be the final reset and windows ready to use,
hope you will make useful answers
many thanks.

1. the *buildos*.exe generates logfile with order
2. you can minimize the number of dsm-files/packages by your self.
i.e OEM, Packages and SYS to one dsm/rgu/provxml
also when are the mxip_******.provxml files processed (reg esttings added to the registry and in what order
mxipCOLD at coldboot (first time/only one time)
mxipUPDATE at resets (allways)

generaly the kitchen/device that you use and/or how much detaild you have cooking-knowns will determines the order.
I Know very little, i can take a rom add packages and rebuild, thats my limit, i want to create this thread so i can better understand what is happening, edit files, make sure my edits dont get changed later during the setup process, I would think this applies to most devices (i have a diamond and also Artemis) the kitchen i use is the modifyed kiaser kitchen as when i was modding artemis i found a simular kitchen for that device and a lot of my packages were reused.
for extracting artemis i use the hypercore-kitchen. but for cooking i changed to ARTEMIS_DEV_v2.1_Build_19199-kitchen. the reason is, that the file-structure in hypercore dismis/damages my brain.
for diamond i use the "kitchen"-kitchen (orig. download filename was kitchen.rar).
ohh, its ringing, so i have end again ...
p.s.
study the system.txt inclusive the batch-files together with the batch-files from "kitchen"-kitchen.
