PDF Viewer - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Hey everyone, I am running an XDA IIs at the moment, and have alot of pdf's that I would like to read on my one hour bus ride into the city, I have tried the latest adobe reader but it is slow and not very "reading" friendly. Does anyone have any suggestions, I have tried converting the pdf is .doc format but that is a no go as well because I could never find a coverter that actually worked. I did a little search on this forum but no definitive results. Thanks alot

On my device, ClearVue PDF is preinstalled. But there is also a good freeware alternative (PocketXpdf).

Hey there Alegra, thanks for the tip, will give it a try... will also see if I can purchase ClearVue for a try.

i often convert dpf's to Lit to use the ms ebook reader which is free and let one set bookmarks which is importent if i read whole novels

That might be a good idea, I do like the .lit format, will have a look at that too

Did you tried XPDF?
http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/
Freeware and work's great.

If it is preinstalled, you don't need to buy it. If not, there are enough freeware alternatives.
You can also look for the thread "iPhone style browser" here in the forum. That's Picsel Browser, also a very good web browser / Office / PDF viewer.
EDIT: XPDF is a PDF viewer for computer (I couldn't find a Windows Mobile version on their page). There is a port for Pocket PC (PocketXpdf) which I already mentioned.

Included PDF Viewer in XDA-Live ROM?

Hey all,
I love the work Kyphur has done and am using .10 of his Live ROM now with no problems. I see .20 is coming out, but he has put ClearVUE PDF back. Am I the only one that thinks this program sucks? On my HTC Hermes I went through everything I could do to get rid of it, and I am loving PocketXdf right now, but now it seems to be coming back! Lets vote on it and maybe change Kyphur's mind!
best pdf viewer
hi
i have a copy of PICSEL BROWSER... imho its the best..
if kyphur wants to embedd this one in the .2 version of the rom.. ill send it to him by PM
I dont think we should be picky, it is his ROM but I vote pcketxpdf, small and low resources. Pretty quick viewing, and free.
I have had problems opening some pdfs with both the clearvue and pocketx so my vote goes for adobe even though it has the most memory footprint. Cant have it all i guess....
I would vote for Adobe, as I also have had problems opening newer pdf's with PocketXpdf and ClearVue. and Adobe is also free...
Isn't Adobe also like 8MB?
Okay, I hear you. ClearVue got back in because I never removed it from my original Base Rom.
I want to Release v0.20 Wednesday Evening. So to be sure I have time to do as voted, this vote will be closed Tuesday Evening at 8:00Pm (US Central Std Time (-6.00 GMT).
This is a Rom for the people, by the people and of the people... err well maybe not that last one but you know what I mean...
Kyphur
I initially voted for PocketXPDF but I'd like to retract that vote and put it in for Adobe. Less than 5 minutes after voting, I quickly found the limitation of my selection as it couldn't open 2 different PDF's mailed to me. Adobe doesn't have an issue with these files on my friends 8525.
I don't understand why the WM5 version of Foxit Reader never makes it to these PDF viewer listings... it's the smallest memory footprint (1,350kB), fast like hell, works fine here since ages...
Sorry, I couldn't list them all, maybe vote for install your own!

One vote for PocketXPDF
I keep service documentation with me in PDF - files as big as 30MB. I have installed Adobe, ClearVue, PocketXPDF and Foxit Reader. I got less problems browsing big documents with PocketXPDF so it is associated with .pdf extension in my TyTN.
My vote goes to adobe.
I used ClearVue and I don't like it (does not open all pdf files), never used pocketXpdf but apparently it also has problems with some files.
So its better 8mb of reliable program than 1mb of problems.
ClearVue PDF is actually a commercial product, but I guess it's embedded in most HTC phones anyway, so not a big deal.

I think Adobe should be off the list since it is HUGE. I have not heard of problems with pocketxpdf, but if it is true then stick with clearvue. 8MB is ridiculous.
in terms of reliability, I would vote for Adobe.
If Adobe reader can be aqueezed into the ROM that will be great, even though it is 8mb, it wont take up any user ROM storage.
If it cannot be squeezed in then I would go for pocketxpdf.
Clearvue is ridicously slow and unusable when viewing multiple pages imho.
hmpf...
Pleeease,
not Adobe. Its a massive RAM eater.
I did install PocketX a couple of days ago and it works great.
I'm closing this discussion
If I have any hope of changing it for tomorrow's release I can't wait longer for the results. Looks like Adobe gets it.
Like anything embedded in the Rom if you don't like it simply don't use it and install what you prefer, it won't touch your RAM if you never launch it and deleting 1 shortcut from your Programs folder won't hurt anyone.
In the event that I can't get it in in time for this release then it will be in the next one.

remove clearvue PDF

how
I am not an expert, but I think that the only way is through rom cooking. You cannot remove files present on rom after it has been flashed on your device
I may be wrong, but this is what I understood

that is Correct.
I think clearvue PDF is a waste of time... the only times I've needed to open a PDF file on my phone I havn't been able to...
ROM cookers might as well stop putting it in their roms and let people decide to install adobe reader LE themselves.
flame away
If you don't want it to appear on your program list, you can just delete the short cut.

For you maybe.
I have efax and viewing faxed pdfs is essential for my work.
I've never had a problem with clearvue and if they removed it, I might as well be back on a standard cell phone.

ClearVue PDF Cab
I think this list will be useful for the mere mortal who doesn't have Win CE Cab Manager. Would you care to share the list once you get it done on this thread as a way to close it?

I guess I'm just an "if it ain't broken, then don't change it...unless its a ROM or other toy..." type of guy.
I've never had a problem with ClearVue so wouldn't know the difference to be quite honest.
I come from Palm where I had to use Docs to Go...now THAT sucked.

the diff is acrobat is much faster. it's significant for > 1 page doc.
Acrobat can also be ran from the externial memory. I would like to see the removal of PowerPoint, that sucker is about 3 Meg. and useless to me.
i-mate's WWE ROM includes ClearVUE as an uninstallable app. There's a cab-file in the extROM called Default_MP_ClearVue_PDF_2.42.442_CDL_WWE_FontFiles.cab. It's 10.4 KB in size so I doubt this could be the full app.
The registry has information on installed apps at
HKLM\Security\AppInstall

Yes, but it doesn't really uninstall it - just the shortcut. The app is still in the windows dir.
Strangely, I have done a search for "pdf" in the windows directory and got the following results. However, I go in and change the properies to make them NOT read only and system, but they still cannot be manually deleted. Hmmm... odd. It must be because of that attribute called "In ROM". Rats.
My thought was to manually delete some files and then apply the registry settings. Oh well, cooking up a custom rom may actually be easier now!
no files for clearvue are labeled as pdf, that's why your not finding it

New User, help please!!

Hello everyone
I'm a new HTC Touch HD user ( I bought it yesterday), I have been a palm user for almost 8 years!, and finally I took the step and change to windows mobile!!, principally because I need to work a lot with word, excel and emails on the go, and not always I can bring my laptop with me.
I have been reading diferent stuff about WM for around 10 hours, and it's quite diferent than the experience with palm OS, I think with Palm OS was much more easy to choose a software for each job!!
well I would like some help please:
1.- I need a good email software, which support many accounts and foulders to organice my emails just like outlook, I'm thinking in "seven" http://community.seven.com/viewforum.php?f=17
or just outlook mobile, but I would like to heard some oppinions before buy this last one.
2.- a good PDF reader, I need to read a lot of datasheets, and I need a software which can word wrap and be finger friendly. adobe reader LE coudn't do it, eather ubook, or maybe I'm doing something wrong? any idea about it?
3.- for GPS I'm thinking in buying IGO 8.3, it's a good choise?
4.- a good agenda software, and I think I will buy Pocket Informant, any coment?
well this is the most important thing for the moment, apart of this and only like a comment, I'm looking for a good clock with alarms, a good english and chinese dictionary, music player, movie player, picture view software, etc.
any help or comment will be apreciated

Hi stranger!!!
Hi! i-m trying to bring my experience to this panel... i-m not an expert but have know both worlds, Palm and PPC devices... i-m own today a Samsung I900 Omnia runing under WM 6.1...
in my experience here you are some tips about your questions....
1) Outlook Mobile provided is good enough... it can manage messaging (SMS) and mailing (i have 4 emmails including hotmail, gmail, yahoo and a propietary one) without any problem... is something spartan if you understand but give you a peace of mind to search and found something more sophidsticated... may be u can try Fleximail...
2) My Omnia had a PDF reader File Wiewer that's good enough... i-m not shure is a standard in WM 6... try Pocket Adobe or Mobile Foxit intead....
3) GPS depends where are you use it!!! because of maps IGO is a good one if you use it in Usa or EUROPE... i-m in Argentina, South America, here Garmin XT rules because detailed maps that it works...
4) I have Pocket Informant and it's superb!!! another good one is Iambic Agendus Pro... i-m not shure rank of prices... both are excellent....
+ clock with alarms: SPB TIME or Ptravel Alarm
+english and chinese dictionary: True Term
+music player: sorry i like WMedia...
+movie player: again WM
picture view software: Pocket XNView or Resco
all topics are just an opinion, hopefully that give you some easy guideline and my english isn't zulu 4 u (MY TONGUE IS SPANISH) c u HERE OR @ WEB...
hugs from Argentina
Jorge
thanks tossero
I think I will check the maps of IGO and if they have good ones for Asia I will buy it
thanks jorgec333
mm, thanks for your advices, I didn't know Fleximail, I will check, about the agenda, yes I used to use agendus, its really good, but I didn't know was good for WM too.
BTW touch HDD came with adobe reader LE, which is really bad in my opinion, I will check the ones you recommended me!!

hi guys!
i'm looking for a picture viewer program; like ACDSee on PC!
ist there any similar program available for X1 (WM 6.1)
i watched several threds but i could'nt find anything.
hope you can help me!
EDIT: sorry for new thread... i found an application on my phone
Also check out the new Resco Photo Viewer, it's in Beta but is really good, probably the best out there at the moment: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=555204
There's also xnview for mobile. Works pretty good, and it's free too.
What do you want to do with it that the standard HTC or MS picture viewer can't do?

DjVu reader for WM 6.5.x

Hi,
I'm looking for a DjVu reader running on the newest versions of WM (6.5.x).
I've found some pretty old projects:
pocketDjVu and DjVuCE
I'm going to try them tomorrow if they work.
But I would rather have a fingerfriendly DjVu reader that is made for WM 6.5 (or 6.1 at least, lol).
Any tips ?
They should support WVGA and 800x480 px.
Or perhaps there is a plugin for Adobe Reader?
Update:
I tried pocketDjVu and runs quite well on my 280xx build.
It works with WVGA and except for the option menu you can controll it with your fingers. Not perfect as it was made for WM5 but acceptable.
When zooming it makes a notification that there is not enough RAM for this size but it still works.
Please feel free to post other DjVu readers as there may be a better one .
Anyone else with experience to share in regards to WM 6.1 and application mentioned above or any other app suitable for opening DjVu files?
i tried one of the two programs mentioned above, but i couldnt get my phone to associate it with djvu files.
it would only say "this file is not associated with any...." etc..
+ when i tried to find it inside the program istself it didnt list any of the djvu files.
any tips?

nope, but i can assure you, that this filetype is useless on PDA's.
Let me say this again:
i am fanatic of collecting methods for opening as many filetypes as possible on PDA and that one is not suitable for that kind of devices. Maybe it was matter of size of files i tested, i am not sure about it, page loading was puren nonsense.
Now, what to do?
..i am struggling too. ideal situation would be converting djvu to CBR/CBZ, but...jesus, this would be nightmare.

quick thought:
did you try to add gsgetfile/tgetfile to your system(file requester changer, A MUST, imo)?
if i am thinking right, maybe that problematic software is just using default WM requester and it is just NOT searching inside of card subfolders. i do not remember what the problem was with these programs - you may try copying test file into /my documents to check, if it became visible(i know, ridiculous advice, but..).
otherwise, use total commander(PPC) for force-assigning filetype to djvu software - it may not work sometimes(it depends, if software can properly use %s's).
