HOWTO: Change Default Font in WM6 - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I for one don't really like the default Tahoma font, so I thought I'd share how to change the default font.
Using the default Vista font "Segoe UI"
1. Copy your font file (usually *.ttf) into /Windows/Fonts. Be sure to note the INTERNAL name of the font (find it out by double-clicking on the file in Windows)
in this case "Segoe UI"
2. Using your favorite registry editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\SysFnt
3. Find the key named "Nm". Replace what's in it (usually Tahoma) with the name of the font, in this case "Segoe UI"
4. Repeat III for "HKLM\SYSTEM\GWE\Menu\Menufnt\Barfnt" and "Popfnt"
4.1 Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\V1
- look for something like FontAliases. The keys inside represent the font "choices" -you have (which default to Tahoma), and look like Arial:-12. Change the value -from Tahoma* to Segoe UI*.
- Rinse and repeat.
5. Reset
And that's it ! The Segoe font renders much more easier to the eyes with Cleartype (and the spacing is really nice)
Do post newer font faces that look nice on QVGA screens
I've uploaded a screenshot of AudioManager in playlist mode. As you can see, the font spacing is MUCH better, and the font looks crispier......try it out!

Merlin

Sounds good, thanks. Could you provide some screenshots?
Edit: Thanks for the shot, looks like a worthy hack =)

Great find, I've done this on two of our WM6 phones and it does make a big difference. Much crisper and more modern looking.
Thanks,

Updated Instructions
See first post.

Nice tutorial... and I notice the difference in many apps... however my today screen and softkeys all look the same as before (compared side by side with a device without the font change). Is that normal with this hack? I verified all the reg entries in your first post.
Also, FYI Segoe UI definitely does not look right without cleartype enabled.

Yeah, I noticed it too, but I'm still looking for the regkeys. Dunno if this is a hard-locked property.
Segoe UI is designed for LCDs (which naturally need Cleartype enabled), so there would be no point in turning Cleartype off.
EDIT: It appears that the menu font IS Segoe UI, but the graphics subsystem warps it to fit a pixel grid.

Hi there,
I tried this today - but when I tried to edit the value of SYSFNT (NM) to Segoe UI (using Mobile Registry Editor) - got the error: Access denied...
Help please...
(I use a HTC Touch btw...)

Hmmm..

That's strange....Anyone else experiencing this?
Try using TaskManager (click on the little arrow on the top-right to get a pulldown menu, and select Regedit).
This isfrom my OEM package archive just copy it to anywhere in the Touch, and run.

Where do I find the Segoe UI font file ?

Retro: WM2003FE wants in
Hi Merlin,
Intrigued by this WM6 hack. Any idea of how this could be accomplished for dinosaurs still using WM2003FE (don't want to give up the Toshiba E800). Admittedley we are behind the OS curve. But just once, it would be nice to share in the hacking fun on this portal!
Thanks.

I don't have a WM2003 device handy, so I can't test it out for you....sorry.
The procedure should be the same, and TaskManager should work on paper, but there are waay too many unknowns. At least it won't cause your Toshiba to go up in flames
But you are most welcome to try it out and see if it works...theoretically, it should. PM me if you have any more issues.

Doesn't work with RotateSE
Hi,
This is a great little hack and it works great in Opera and IE which is where it shines, but (there's always a "but") it doesn't work in Landscape mode which I switch it using RotateSE.
Any ideas?
P

Is this what you want?
I've made a cab to change your system fonts.
It fully replaces the system tahoma font.
You should turn on cleartype first.
To remove them you just have to uninstall.
There is little difference from Segoe UI to Tahoma.
Try Callibri or Myriad... (these fonts are REALLY nice!)

@g77
nice work, but I prefer Segoe UI...we all have individual preferences,y'know
Anyway, mind if I post these up on the parent?

[SKN][05/22/10] - Emu48 gtx

updated see post 7
old one here:
Last week I had to fight hours to find the best way to use Emu48 on my Touch HD and I came at the same skin files.
I also managed to run a HP50G rom with a VGA skin, but I couldn't find a 800x480 skin as for HP48GX. Anyway it seems that with few work it will be possible to use the skin I found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=458911
RiCCiO
finnaly I corrected the links failures and attachments bugs... what a pain to post here ... I dont know why but everytime I edit the message or attachements I get a freezing browser and all uploads are lost... this time I think its good!
please do not hesitate to improve the skin from the svg file, its very easy with inkscape!
Does it work?
Hi
Can someone post the exact sw versions to be used?
I have tried several version of the emulator with rom.48g and the blue kml above, but get different error messages every time.
br Lars
it works perfectly even with wm6.5.5
i attach the files i am using dont remember where to find it exactly on the websites above (so many files to explore).
I have just discovered that the main missing file may be the KEYBOARD.KMI (in the zip file attached). Can you confirm that?
Thanks now it works. I did also try several KMI files, but nothing matched
a new skin...

very good job.....
If you have the grafics, or is this for *.exe file, or do you have a cab file for that?
That is one more peace for the GTX dream and for me as a hardliner of GTX.

Ok so here is the files to install it

Very good job and color combinations for the GTX like skin.
Exit app by OFF button
Hi t0k0m0k0
Really great emu48 skin , very well done.
Is there any way to close/exit the emu48 application by pressing the "OFF" button , (i.e right shift - off). At present this action only switches the calculator's screen off. In order to exit the app need to go to 'File - Exit'.
This works with the free42 emulator for HP42S.
any ideas?

I have the same problem like for many other apps on WM6.5.X for which you dont have the bottom bar (eg totalcommander, etc.)...
And the global and easiest way to close an app on WM6.5.X is arkswitch I think (nice and fast).

hello RR33, here is the svg graphics to make a VGA version, but the graphics will have to be adapted with a VGA model in order to have the correct KEYBOARD.KMI file... do you think you can adapt it on the basis of an existing vga skin and kmi file?
hi ToKoMoKo very nice job . !!!! Unfortunally gts skin doesnt fit for my 400x240 screen. I love 48gx and your amazing design but cant find anything for my diamond2 dual sim clone. I run sucessfully little skins and bigest too but anything fit good.

Hi, it would be great if you adapt my skin to WQVGA...
I think it is simple on the basis of a 400x240 existing skin, you can take for example this one >> http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-http-omnia-modaco-com/284163/hp49-on-the-omnia/#entry969746
you just have to:
- open the BMP file and copy in my SVG file (with inkscape eg),
- replace the keys at the good place with the correct size (SVG is vector image so good quality here)
- export SVG to bitmap (PNG i think then convert to BMP) in 400x240px
- replace with the same name the original BMP in the original skin and it should work...
waiting to see it
HVGA Skin
I have Hd mini, Is there any hvga skin for it?
KeyFeedback possible?
Hallo,
being a long time fan of the HP calculators (I own a HP28S) I have now the HP48emu on my HD2.
It is great (especially sine the current StockRom HTC calculator is useless, as it can't take to decimal operands in scientific mode...), but there is one thing I am missing.
Is it possible to add the keyboard vibration (tactile feedback) to the HP48emu? If anyone knows how, please advise.

Just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your work so far. Ít's just a little too small, but I'm already getting used to it...
I think that this font suits the new 6.5 "today" screen well!

Now, I want my Tahoma back. Can anyone point to cab with standard Tahoma font so I can replace it?

just uninstall, and then do a soft-reset, I believe the tahoma fonts will be reloaded back because it's a ROM file.
This is a really nice addition Gtrab. would you be so kind as to extend the font for it to work in manila as well? I believe that's achieved by copying the files and renaming them to another fontname, the one that manila uses, I don't know the specifics though.
@Korbicz: Have you uninstalled it ? IT WILL
@Angelusz: Yes I also changed the manila font but I want to solve the size issue before releasing it
I did. Soft reset after. Nothing changed. Tried changing to some other font with Xperia Tweak. Strange things happened - some items (menus, icon names, start menu) got new font, rest was still showing SE-style font.
EDIT: OK, managed to fix this. I extracted tahoma.ttf and tahomabd.ttf from my Diamond, copied them to Xperia with Resco File Explorer, soft-reset - voila!. I've got good old Tahoma back .
just a thought, maybe gtrab you may want to instasll the font using a different name, and use the font alias to replace Tahoma with the new font you have...

Thanks for the advice but I think that's not necessary since I tested the install-uninstall routine many times before posting the CAB, and it works
The original Tahoma font is auto-restored when this skin is uninstalled (unless you install it twice, as with other system-files replacing apps, because then windows mobile will be confused about the orignal one), you can test it by yourself

I thought if you just simply delete the file, the system will restore the missing file from the ROM.
anyway, here's the screenshot of the font that's 1.5x bigger than the original size you have
I think it's too huge, maybe I will try 1.2x ..

i am sure that in the same registry keys used to change font some of the others values are what control size and weight of the font, but i am not sure what numerical value you would need to put in to change it...i will leave that open to the seasoned forum people...you could cheat and just get a font with a smaller appearance from somewhere like here.

it changes the system font, as well as the font of the drop menus.....in other words, it covers just about everything font related (i am uncertain about the icon text for the start menu...i use 3vo and hide them...it changes the text at the top bar, though...)
Testing
It was impossible for me not to try this tweak
Results on my S620:
Only change that seems relevant is the one on HKLM\System\GDI\SYSFNT\Nm.
Changes on the other 2 keys had no effect.
None of the 3 keys changed the font for:
Start Menu labels
Opera Mini
Contacts list
Text messages
And other things...
It did change font used by Internet Explorer on its UI. When browsing with it, results are mixed.
I am particularly interested in changing the font for Start Menu labels. Well... not even the font itself: would make me happy just to make them "Bold". Fiddled with the Wt value on the 3 keys but saw no change. Anyone knows how to do that?
it doesnt change all the font on windows. only part of it. im using wm 6.1. so, exactly, how to change all the font on windows?? is it possible?? need help.. thanks.

The simplest method to change your Windows Mobile Core Font!
Take two font files (one for normal and one for bold attribute)
Rename the normal font as segoe.ttf (only if its truetype font) and the bold font as segoeb.ttf
Replace the /Windows/segoe.ttf and /Windows/segoeb.ttf with the ones you renamed above. Reboot and Viola!
To Change again you have to restart ur phone once before over-writing again or use your favorite file replacer

you shouldn't do anything with the png's exept create manila files off theme
you have to copy the manila files of the notification icons into the windows folder. (you can't use the normal explorer for that, use Totalcomander)
if it still doesn't work, try my other notification theme link in my signature

hanx for ur reply
Meant changing BLUE to GREEN ( clock, tab icons, noti icons..etc )
Great theme, but having two problems. The top bar hasn't changed (not transparent) and the bottom windows bar (Phone/Menu bar) hasn't changed either. Anyone else seeing problem with those or have any ideas why it's not working for me?
Using L26HDLEOV3.
Thanks
Looks great hempe. I'm using your black flip; you missed a file out for it in the clocks zip so here's a zip with all the flip bits.

1. Have you softreset after installing the theme cab?
if you didn't do so else or if the problem remains
2. check with total comander what's the value of:
Code:
\\\registry\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\SoftKeyBar\SoftKeyBarThemeImage
shoud be \Window\HDWall_softkeybar.png
and
Code:
\\\registry\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Today\TaskBar\SoftKeyBarThemeImage
shoud be \Window\HDWall_taskbar.png
if the registry entry are those, check if the HDWall_... are the right pngs
@millski
thanks havn't noticed

Checked the registry values and they were the default ROM values. I checked my windows folder I do not have HDWall_taskbar.png nor HDWall_softkeybar.png. Which cab is suppose to install those? Any way you could provide me with the two .png files and I'll just manually set them? Oddly enough, lockscreen and startmenu look like they should (except the background is not HQ like the background in manila...not sure if that's normal).
Much thanks!
ok i put a zip with the cab that should install the softkeybar and taskbar in the secound post.
You have to softreset after installation.
The png's are also included in the zip
BEST THEME for sense 2.5 as of NOW!!! Thanks. To make it compatible with MaxUltimate. Great great effort!

INSTALLATION
1.) Look at the preview and select the font of your choice
2.) Copy the selected fonts to anywhere on your SDcard
3.) Click install. At the first installation your device should prompt you to change the font type in settings. If you continue to install fonts after this it does not take you back to settings again, you will have to do this your self.
4.) To set the font you need to go into Settings > My device > Display > Font > Font Style > Choose your font. Note the more fonts you have installed the longer it takes to generate the list the first time so be patient if you go crazy and install ALL of these fonts lol.
5.) You *may* need to adjust the size of the font to suit your device; unfortunately there is no standard when it comes to sizing with fonts so consistency is out the window, I cannot change this, deal with it or swap to another font. On that note I cannot garantee that ANY of the fonts included in these uploads are even suitable for use on a mobile device, actually I can honestly say now that *some* of these are completely rediculous and probably shouldn't be used at all, but feel free to criticise... I don't really care all that much, if enough people think a font is sh!t then I will happily remove it.
Note: To uninstall any particular font you unfortunately can't do this from the font menu in settings like you would expect, you actually have to uninstall the fonts just like you would other apps or I should say widgets. Normally one would uninstall from their homescreen via the options but I have not created shortcuts for these fonts (I think its unnecessary and not only that but I really dislike apps junking up my homescreen), so in otherwords you need to go into Settings > More > Applications Manager > Downloaded Applications > Uninstall selected font.DOWNLOADS

CHANGELOG Seriously - Is this even necessary?
Release 1.0
✓ Bunch of fonts as per the list above that SHOULD install without a hitch? Let me know if there are any surprises or issues
✓ I have not tested them ALL of them but I tested most, so I can't forsee there being any bugs so to speak but there maybe discrepencies over naming of fonts etc, I can almost garantee that actually because not all the names listed above are identicle to their "origins"; i.e. some were renamed to have titles more practical so that one knows what they are installing instead of getting a surprise. If you must have something renamed to its proper name cause you have chronic OCD please send me a PM and I will make a special one just for you seriously tho...I understand...I have a bit of OCD myself at times haha.
Release 2.0
✓ New roboto font - How stupid of me to actually forget the font that lead me to creating these in the first place haha
✓ Other versions of the Apple Mac fonts
✓ Possibly some themes like starwars or back to the future etc. I have to go digging through my archives somewhere to find these. No promises.
Personal Favorites & Suggestions
My personal favorite font would have to be Windows 8 SegoeUI font, followed closely by Papyrus Regular, then Consolas
Credits XDA Ture type Flip Fonts - By Jarmezrocks
So far its only myself, but if you request a font and provide the source for it and then choose to have it uploaded (included with the rest) for others forum members to download and use then I'm happy to add your name here to the credits.

Great Collection
Thanks for the post and fonts,
one question which one of them is the S5 thin font ?
need courier bold
seems we have loads and loads and loads of sans-serif and doo-hickey display fonts but don't have much in mono-spaced serif typefaces.
courier is a good start but it's rather light. need a courier bold.
Thanks
thanks so much for this! really appreciate this!!! would you mind doing more Archer fonts - i LOVE it!
nice work thanx alot
For some reason I was never notified about any of you posting in this thread? I have an S7 now and these fonts DO actually work on the newer device also. I will take people up on their suggestions from this *old* thread. Cheers
For everyone who doesn't want the mega-crapware app, switch to desktop mode then you can download with browser.
Installed on my Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge+ BUT when I try to apply it the system makes me uninstall it.
