Ipaq hx4700 Forum? (HTC Roadster) - About xda-developers.com

What about a forum for the ipaq hx4700? I know that this website is for HTC PDAs but, the hx4700 was also called the Roadster in some markets and made by HTC. Considering that there's a thread over in the upgrading section with 595,000 views and almost 2000 posts on the hx4700 (and that's just one thread) I think there would be a strong interest in a dedicated forum. Many of the posts are from newbies and not by developers but we do have Kozhura and Menneisyys and many other dev types who have posted quite alot about this device in the past, with Kozhura now on his 4th version of WM6. There seems to be a big following for this device even now with a kitchen having been adapted by vivi to suit it. It would be great to have our own corner somewhere on this wonderful site for our community.
Thank you for the consideration.

Yes, sounds a very good idea
Dirk

Great idea!

Based on what I was able to see this had a 2003 rom and came out in 2004.
We have added a lot of forums for the new devices and I am not sure if there will be enough users to justify a section a few years late.

That is true, however HP did do a (poor) WM5 upgrade and there are at least two unofficial WM6 ROMs. The hx4700 was ahead of its time and still powerful compared to many on the market today; probably because it doesn't have an inbuilt phone.
There is this thread which is nearly up to 2,000 posts; many of the smart phone forums on XDA developers have nowhere near as many posts in total.
If there was a forum just for the hx4700, then maybe that would entice other hx4700 owners to join up to talk things other than just the ROMs.
I bet there are a few super users that would be happy to moderate a dedicated kx4700 forum too?

You guys don't give up do you ?
OK I admit you do have a valid point. I will put it forward to the sysadmin for a section under
Other HTC manufactured phones

Thank you

Thanks again for the consideration. It is an old device but I think there's quite a bit of interest in it.

Thank you to all.

To all participants in these forums:
I want convey a HUGE THANK-YOU to all of the contributers to these forums.
A couple of months ago I decided it was time to replace my IPAQ 4150 for something with a bit more functionality. As I was researching what my next device would be, I stumbled across xda-developers.com and my decision was made. I decided on the i-mate pda2k specifically becuase all of the hard work done by the people here meant that I would no longer have to wait for the vendor to issue upgrades and I could customize my device to MY requirements!
After having read most of the Blue Angel Upgrading threads, and the wiki (about 20 times) I've managed to perform a number of upgrades and cook a half-decent extended rom. (naturally I screwed it up a couple of times, and had a brick for about a week but I managed to recover after having read many of the "help-me" threads)
A special thanks to MDAIIIUser, TheLastOne, HappyGoat and a few others (you know who you are) for contributing so much of their time hacking and converting roms, troubleshooting extended rom issues and also for being so incredibly patient and helpful when answering questions from newbie's like myself.
I look forward to being a contributer to this community and I hope that I can bring 1/10th of the value to the forum that many of you bring every day.
So, once again - Thank-you to all!
.... and you didn't have to ask one question????
Fortunately, the mistakes I made were similar to those made by many before me. Most of the information I needed to repair the brick I had created was available in the threads.
Now I see that i-mate has released the 1.40 rom so I hope all of my effort and frustration wasn't for nothing!

I think I saw someone say they were uploading it to the ftp site.
Try here.

Please let me know how it works out. I'm curious to see what's in the extended rom.
you know, I am sorry to hijack the thread somewhat, but I need to say thanks also, I did ask one question, but "search" led me to may answers, I have given a few things back to this site, but I do plan to add more, so... Thanks everyone...
You are all very welcome...I do this as a hobby, and appreciate the positive feedback..!

Stealth forum

Why don't we have a Stealth forum in here?
We do, but it has a negative refractive index, it's just that stealthy.
Seriously: I don't think there's been much call for such a thread. slinky.

EDIT: PARTIALLY DELETED TO AVOID CONFUSION....... POLICY IS IF IT ISN'T HTC IT ISN'T GOING TO GET A SECTION
I'm for one... Issue is, I think there were many people here looking around for Stealth-related stuff, but left after finding so little info...
I would welcome it as well - xda-developers is well known site and many former users come here...
Kindly excuse my shameless-ness... But... BUMP!!
appreciate it very much if there's a stealth forum. i'm a newbie to the whole wm5 and using stealth. got lots of issues in o2 apps like o2 plus, ezitext and some others, like rom upgrades and the whole shebang.
I will be anther one.
I'm a stealth fanatic too...
yes please!
same here, i use O2 Stealth too..i want WM6 upgrade
i use O2 Stealth too.
me too .....we are not too bad
hi,my friends ... how to upgrade wm6 on my stealth?any idea?
Hi All,
The stealth isn't a HTC phone, at this moment there is no room for non HTC phones on the forum. Sorry..
Best regards,

But why? The forum is called XDA-developers and it is the O2 XDA Stealth, it doesn't say HTC-developers does it?
O and by the way, isn't the Atom and Stealth produced by the same company, because they are quite simular....?

Our portal page has the following welcome message:
Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a secretive firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.
Since we develop software for it, we need information, and nobody seemed eager or ready to give us what we needed. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
We hope that you will enjoy this site and find it as useful as we do. We encourage you to donate or otherwise support this site. Of course absolutely all proceeds from donations will benefit this community.
If you look closely you will also see that not all phones made by HTC have a place on this forum simply because there isn't room to give every phone a forum.
Best regards,
Flar
Site admin.

Im a Stealth user now too. Works well even in the States on Cingular/ATT. It does seem silly to have not even a small section devoted to xda's of all sort on a xda forum site. There is support for phones almost 5 yrs old that get maybe 1 or 2 new posts a month and this phone is only about 1yr old.
Just because O2 and HTC broke ties doesnt mean xda-developers and xda phones should break ties!
I have had a stealth in the past and would have loved to have seen a stealth forum at the time. IMHO i think that xda-dev would benefit greatly with a stealth forum. In fact I think that creating forums for all Non-HTC phones would be a great idea for the PPC community.

But if there is not a Stealh forum, could somebody please tell me which phone it is most like?
I think the stealth is quite simular to the atom, but which one? (pure/exec/etc.)

Please help a newbie understand all this

I am a software developer and am quite familiar with all the concepts of ROm flashing etc. but am a newbie to working with PPC devices in this regards.
I have a Cingular 8525 and would like to upgrade to WM6 but HTC and AT&T says it is not avail till Fall.
What is a "cooked" rom in the context of this forum?
What are the various pros/cons of installing one of the unofficial ROMs and how that affects both my device in general as well as AT&T support?
Any sort of overview of what this forum is all about would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave
hi
is too lomg to explain...
why dont you start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462
Best advice I can give you, is to start reading the forum for a solid week and more. I had no clue as to what or how to do anything, but after reading, and more reading you start to grasp everything. It's not hard at all. A "cooked" ROM is the term used when a "chef" (someone obviously that makes a ROM) 'cooks' it up in their "kitchen" (computer) the way they want it. Adding apps like spices. Follow? So when someone "cooks" a ROM they just basically build one to thier liking and offer it to anyone that wants to try it.
Read the wiki and the guide, and read some threads. You'll pick it up pretty fast.
I have a better idea.. Read this: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
OK thanks folks.
I'm figuring in general that these cooks use the WM6 SDK to build the ROMs with what software they want already installed?
What are the best ROMs or "cooks" in general for the 8525?
Thanks!
Everyone has their own preference, so your best bet is just reading into all the ROMs that are offered, figuring out what you like and run with it. Or learn to cook and build your own.

Actually, it's a combination of "leaked" ROMs for Hermes and best-of-breed pieces parts from any number of HTC devices, assembled with killer tools provided by cornerstone members of XDA. Does that sum it up for ya?

If turn-key WM6 for Cingular/AT&T is what you want, try one of my ROMs. If AT&T really wanted to provide WM6 they could do so now vs. in the fall. It's all about the marketing...
Not that I would as compared to using one of the existing roms built by someone with a lot more experience but what is all required to build your own WM6 ROM? What besides the WM6 SDK? Any "recipes" onhow to do so?
I have the full legal MSDN Subscription library and know that it has the WM6 SDK but can't say I have seen Mobile Office 2007 on the disks.
I should also think that there was Cingular/AT&T specific software and WM6 custimizations that needed to be added to a WM6 ROM for the 8525 that only AT&T would have or know how to configure. If so where are these bits or configuration data obtained from?
Do cooks somehow take the existing ROMs, upload them to the PC and then upgrade them? Seems like it would be difficult to enahce a binary image.
For instance, where would one get the Mobile Office 2007 bits from because these are not released yet are they? I just installed Office 2007 Ulitmate on my Vista PC but have seen a warning that WM6 does not support Office 2007 files yet.
Thanks for any and all explanations,
Dave

Yes and don't like that mentality either as I think it would be nice to take better care of existing users than potential users being a software developer and not a markieting type...

Before the flamethrowers strike, you really need to do some (strike... lots of) reading here and many of your questions will be answered. I've yet to touch the WM6 SDK for any ROM I've produced, incidentally.

There's a bit more to it than that. Again, I highly recommending doing some reading as this is a developers forum (containing a wealth of WM knowledge from the 'trenches')....

Heh, there have been ROMs with Office 2007 for a couple months now! BTW, do you believe everything M$ says?
Thanks vp3g. Did not mean to simplify anything as I stand amazed at all this even knowing a lot about PC software development - just not at this level for the PPC and was trying to get oriented. THe links help a lot. Will do the required reading...the wiki helps a lot too and have been reading it and it seems many of the mods/addons are in the extended rom. Thanks again,

Largely true for carrier-supplied ROMs. Around here the ExtROM is a big waste of hidden (albeit exposable and somewhat usable) space that would be better served as contiguous Storage (better yet Program) memory.
Gentlemen;
After looking at several other threads, this one can serve as an excellent example of how to [respectfully] treat a noob without the blatant flaming. A little dialogue, the noob begins to understand that READING the wiki and threads will answer most, if not all, his questions as well as educate him. Then it's over; the forum has another member who will one day become a valuable contributor instead of a lurker, afraid of posting due to the sometimes incessant flamethrowers.

POLL: Start new forums for other devices: O2, Samsung, Gigabyte

Hi friends! I just want to start a poll for voting if we want to have a forum for other non-HTC devices, like the following list:
-O2 (like stealth, atom pure, etc)
-Toshiba
-Samsung
-Gigabyte
In the initial time I think that a separate forum for each manufacturer would be ok...
Basically we are here to share knowledge and expertise about using these great devices, and I think that will be great to add this new forums because while the community is becoming more popular, more users are here to research how to enhance their productivity...
Thanks in advance!
Yeah, I agreed to that. Voted already.
i want a forum for Eten x800 VGA with tri-band 3G!
y wouldnt u! Eten x800 is so much better then tytn/hymes.
pros and cons
well if we open up to more manufactures, this would mean more traffic, more knowledge on general forums and more people to donate to this great cause but these are busy forums anyway and the mods and admin have lives to lead. the extra burden is on them so either they appoint more admins and mods or leave it as it is. but as the name is xda developeras maybe they should allow other xda phones from o2.....

To all Moderators, Programmers and the Experts of WinMo!!!

To all Moderators, Programmers and the Experts of WinMo, why there's are still much problems from the others members that cannot be done or resolve from their threads in each section of forum, including mine?
I suggest to all of you, please help them and me!
firstly of all your link doesn't show your problem
secondly and most importantly: this is not a way to achieve anything except looking like a fool to other members.
everyone has problems, but people mostly search, ask in specific threads and wait for the response,or even come up with own solutions.
you can't come here and say hey solve my problem, it just isn't alright and it seems very selfish.
imagine everyone doing what you did here...the forum would be closed just like this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=578575 ...read last few posts and it will be clear to you
isn't it sad, how human foolishness and selfishness can ruin other people's hope and efforts.

wm 2003 had an option to backup everything...and that option went away with newer generations of wms, coming with newer devices because of the differences in chips and chipsets...
in wm 2002/03 you could loose all your data if your phone was long without battery,it isn't the case with newer devices,so you don't need a backup like that one
i believe you need something like "PIMbackup" which is the best backup app ever IMO,it can backup and restore contacts, messages, apointments,to do,tasks and any folder you choose...and it is free
as far as wm5/6/6.1/6.5 go...i had...i mean i still have an htc magician which also had 2003se,but the hardware just wasn't able to handle newer os ...or at least there wasn't much interest because the device was getting very old...as one guy said to you some time ago...some devices did receive updates ie himalaya...but mostly thanks to dedicated devs and it's hardware....i still have a himalaya which is working...although battery is pretty worn out
so you should stop expecting to successfully cook a rom for you HPs unless you are some kind of programing/win ce guru...
any other questions?
