splash screen change ? - HTC Cavalier

is it possible to change splash screens on the cavalier like in other htc models ?

there's a setting on the registry that you can change to point to a different image...
ms_splash.png I think

but how can i change the file, cause it's telling me that the file is in use

rename then copy then rename back

or just use a different name and change the registry

what registry?

because i can't even rename the system file...it's telling that's in use..

find ms_splash.png in the registry. change the string to ms_splash1.png.
name your image to ms_splash1.png and place the file into the same folder as ms_splash.png
soft reset

i tried also with total commander but i even cant rename the file

Changing Files in Windows Dir

Hi,
I flashed a new ROM and now I want to change sym.txt in \windows dir, but it's read-only and I can't change that.
How can I write in this directory?
Thanks!
use Total Commander
nope - totalcommander cannot access the ROM, as i am informed. So some files will stay. I don't know yet how to break into on HTC 4350 (Herald)...
If this file is part of ROM you can not change it without cooking a new ROM.
What you can do it overwrite it. The new file will actually be stored on the storage memory but because it has the same name and path as the ROM file the system will go to it instead of the original. At least until you hard reset your device.

I tried that, it works. Although now the function of this file doesn't work anymore (translation of certain characters by pressing "dot" and "space" on the hardware keyboard of the HTC TyTn).
After editing the file and overwriting the original, nothing happens when I press dot+space...
That is because you ruined the signature (by editing an original file) or used an unsigned file.
All system files in WM 5 and up must be signed.

Oh I see. Thanks for the information. Can I somehow sign it myself?
Yes, the WM 5 / 6 SDKs contain the tools and sample signatures, but you need to "provision" your device (put the signature in so it will be recognized).
If you do a search on this forum you will find all the info you need.

Changing Welcomehead.png question.

Hi,
I would like to change the green Windows Mobile screen when i boot my device. I have extracted the Welcomehead.png from my device and made another in Photoshop. Saved it as Welcomehead.png. I paste it in the windows folder and overwrite the original png. When i reboot i thought i would see the new picture but no luck here. Still the same green WM picture. What can i do to make this work for me?
make sure its not READ-ONLY(chk its attributes)
are you sure you replaced it? you can't replace it with Active-Sync, use a filemanager on your PPC to copy/cut the file and then paste it in the windows folder.
@ ather90
How do i check if it's read only or not?
@ me_
Yes I'm sure. This is what i did. I made the new png-file and made a rar-file, I copied it to my Card and extracted it there. From there i pasted it into the windows folder. I just did it again and it asks me if i want to overwrite it, yes in this case so it must be overwritten. Again, after reboot nu luck.
If you have an image viewer on your device, check that the file in the \Windows directory is now showing your new image.

Sorry for the late reaction, had to work.
I have checkt this and no it does not show up when i scan the images in the Windows-folder. Can anyone tell me what the right procedure is to make this work?
It should be named welcomehead.96.png not welcomehead.png - you should use total commander to overwrite the file and the welcomehead.96.png should be no larger than 100kb to work.

And this time it works. Thank you Meschle and others.

How can you create your own folder icons?

I know that in certain folders in the start menu/programs have files that allow that folder to have a special icon. The file is always icon.lnk. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to create or edit one? I have tried renaming the file to .png, .bmp, .jpg and a few others and then trying to load them into PhotoShop but none worked.
Is it possible or does it need a different method?
Also, is it possible to assign an icon to a program? My case in point is that KaiserTweak doesn't appear to have one.

i can't say for sure but i think its the shellres.dll file that has the image in it
Where is shellres.dll located?? I can't find it.
Edit: I found it And how can I replace the image in the dll? I can't even copy it out from the windows folder... I tried with total commander but no luck :S
as i said you have to cook your own rom from scratch on the computer to get the dll into it
pretty much what all the people who make roms in this forum does so as i said it's not something for the most users
you can prob read about how start learning to cook roms in the wiki pages of your device
you can do this without cooking it into the rom. With WM6 the file is shellres.96.dll. Use reshacker to replace icon number 288, then you must "sign" the DLL using this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1262575&postcount=1
finally, copy it into the windows folder (you may have to rename the old one first)
soft reset and you should be good to go!
since you're having problems copying it I've attached a copy
BTW if you do this and it screws up your title bar icons it probably means that WM6.1 uses a different DLL. To fix it just delete or rename the DLL and reset.
i looked for this file on my wing (it has wm6) and there is a file named shellresapps.96.dll, so i am sure that it's probably not the same file....and it will not allow me to copy it to my pc so i can look inside of it, any ideas?
More help
I tried with replacing icon but it seems rshacker doesn't save that.
i mean icon not changed.
i used a 21x21 icon its of same size of original one.
please help

about 2 secrets

I have 2 questions that they are beating my brain for a long time and asked about them at several threats but nobody answered. May be nobody knows or want to share.
I am sorry if these questions are answered in some threats but I could not find.
1. "Showsim" registry: If we create a registry dword named ShowSim at HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone and give it a value "0", the contact names recorded in SIMCARD don't be visible at contact menu. That is good, but after a soft reset this registry value turns back to "1" dword value, why? Should we do something before cooking rom that ShowSim stay tuned after soft reset?
On HongKong ROMs this value stays at the value of what I want after soft reset.
2. Shellres.192.dll: If we want to customize the windows taskbar, we should change the shellres.192.dll. Well, but OS doesn't let me to rename or delete or copy this .dll even by means of Total Commander or Resco. Many people can do that but I can not, why? Is there any tricky that special to some ROMs? If so, what is difference on these ROMs from my official ROM?
Thanks in advance to who reply me...

For question number 2. Which Resco version you are using? Am using v7.5 and there's no problem on overwriting shellres.192.dll. Not sure if untick the option for "hide system files and files with the following extensions: .DLL, .CPL..." help. There's no secret on overwriting that files .

I am using Resco 7.5 too and unticked "hide system files and ..." but no way.
I saw many people who don't solve this problem when I were searching...
Point two: Try Total Commander ( Freeware ), download here:http://www.ghisler.com/

you can try this, first rename the shellres.192.dll to shellres.192.old with totalcommander then put in the new file than delete shellres.192.dll.old sometimes i had the same problem when i do like this it work perfectly for me.
good luck

Not sure if there's differences in way of overwriting the file or just because of the existence of a registry key that allow or disallow the overwrite of dll file (this might need to search if I've tweak certain registry key but forgot to note that down). For Resco usage, this is the way i replace or overwrite the file.
- copy the file shell192.dll to a temporary folder in my storage card
- using Resco, navigate to the folder
- right click on the file, then choose "copy to"
- you will see a screen prompting you to choose the folder you want to copy to
- now click on "Windows"
- another prompt will be asking you if you would like to replace the read only ROM file
- answer "yes"
