OK, Noob education thread!! - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV ROM Development

OK, so I’m going to be getting a UK Orange branded Touch Diamond this week. My aim is to remove the Orange branding in the software and revert it to standard HTC black and white theme. As it would be out of the box if I bought one direct from HTC. I’ve no interest in any tweaks/improvements to the standard ROM (different radio ROMs etc) at the moment, maybe once I’ve managed it once successfully I’ll worry about that! I’ve spent a day or so reading these forums and though it seems complicated to a beginner I think I have it all figured out now! I would appreciate however if someone experienced could cast an eye over what I’m about to do and let me know if I’ve made any errors that could result in me ruining an expensive piece of kit!
My understanding is that there are basically 3 stages to flashing a new ROM onto a Diamond, backing up, loading hardSPL and loading the desired ROM. So my plan is to do the following:
1. Back up all operator settings (WAP, MMS, GPRS etc) or use something like PIM Backup (though I won’t have any data on my Diamond as it will be brand new!)
2. So, first I download the signed version of hardSPL (1.40), from here (http://modmydiamond.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=26&limit=1&limitstart=2 ). My understanding is that by using the signed version I’ll reduce to a minimum any chance of buggering up my Diamond and basically it will stop me from doing anything stupid!!
3. Then follow the instructions on that same page, which will install hardSPL.
4. Now find a ROM that I want to load onto the Diamond, from what I can tell this (1.34.831.1 WWE from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=399680) is the latest HTC released ROM in English (PLEASE correct me if this is wrong!!)
5. Follow the instructions detailed here to install the ROM (http://modmydiamond.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=26&limit=1&limitstart=4). As I understand it, when I unzip the ROM that I have downloaded, it includes the 6 files listed on that page, including the ROM update utility.
As I understand it following the instructions on that final page will leave me with a Diamond that is not in any way Orange branded and has the latest official HTC released ROM on it (black and white themed menus etc etc).
So, is everything that I’ve written correct, and if I follow these instructions will I avoid ruining my phone? If I’ve missed anything to check before I start or that I need to do please point me to the thread that explains it so that I can look over it.
Hopefully over time this thread can be a one stop shop for absolute noobs who are unsure of how exactly to go about flashing their device, and in what order to do things!!
Thanks
JP

I'm still a noob, too, but two things you should make sure:
- Have your battery on the phone fully charged
- Disable standby on battery and on AC power in the phone and on your main PC so they don't shut down during the flash process
I just flashed my Diamond successfully today, it's actually quite easy if you get the right steps - and thosee above look just like what I did.
Good luck!
W0nk0

4. Now find a ROM that I want to load onto the Diamond, from what I can tell this (1.34.831.1 WWE from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=399680) is the latest HTC released ROM in English (PLEASE correct me if this is wrong!!)
Really, that's the first and not recommended.
1.93 is the last, but not very obvious where it is released from.
1.37 is what I know the last official release.

Orange UK ROM is 1.37...
When flashing one for a friend I exprienced issues trying to flash HardSPL with 2 errors but managed it in the end with Olipro HardSPL 1.3 the but Diamond project team 2 rom on, the flashed radio rom back to 05.

1.93 is supposed to be the last official stock ROM from HTC (yes, it's English - WWE). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408281
How do you tell if it really is stock and uncooked? No idea, but it works very well indeed and is very responsive.
Oh, and the dev hard spl works to flash 1.93; some others I tried didn't. YMMV

Does that mean that the Orange branded ROM is 1.37? Which one should I be using to remove the Orange branding and revert to the standard HTC interface?

Can I go back?

I looked around and did not see a clear answer to the question of reverting/flashing back to WM5 if desired after flashing one of these WM6 ROMS.
Does anyone know where I can find the answer?
Thanks in advance.
I too have looked around but haven't asked for fear of being flamed. The gurus think that we should be able to pick up on all the lingo and have a clear understanding of what everything means.
I am looking for a way to go back to a shipped ROM from anything after flashing SPL 1.11 in case I need to warranty exchange my Cingular 8525. I have yet to figure out how to do it.

Yes. You can go back to WM5 from WM6. I have done it before with no problems. Your answer is once again yes!
I will not flame you but look harder.

once You go black (2.5 ), You will never go back...
hi there
first of all, I am no expert in the ROM related knowledge, but i did go back to WM5 from WM6 recently. The reason I have gone back to WM5 it is because I am suspecting the Chinese viewer (CE-Star) that i used does not work good in any flavor of WM6, it causes frequent lock-ups in WM6 that makes my phone pretty much unusable.
Besides, i don't mind to share my experience for downgrading to WM5, the following is my up and down sequence.
1. upgrade from Dopod WM5 rom to WM6 cooked rom
2. upgrade to SPL 1.40
3. upgrade radio to 1.38.00.11
4. upgrade radio to 1.40.30.00
5. upgrade to SPL 2.10
6. downgrade SPL from 2.10 to 1.40
7. downgrade from WM5 Rom (It is some sort of HTC Standard WM5 Rom that my friend gave me, and my radio has gone back to 1.38.00.10 as the ROM comes with it.
8. upgrade to SPL 2.10
9. upgrade to Radio 1.40.30.00
Also, you may check out mrvanx's guide for downgrading to WM5 here.

actually... i'm on black 2.5 and thinking of going back... too many apps are wiggin out on wm6
I actually just did it. I was running the latest version of HardSPL, flashed to the new ATT ROM, and then created a updater to flash the SPL to the ATT spl.
Wasn't hard, and only took a few minutes. So, as of right now, my phone is running the new ATT ROM, and if I need to warranty it, I'm all set.
in the wiki it mentions..
If your vendor has released you original rom as a shipped upgrade, you just need to flash it.
If your vendor has not released any ROM upgrade yet, you cannot fall back to original ROM easily. You'll have to reconstruct the ROM out of a dumped ROM.

if you only want to read chinese, but not input, there is an alternative to it. look for a cab which is named 'sunglobe.ttf register patch'.
Maybe the easiest way
First thing I would want to do is to Flash the unit to what is known as a "Hard SPL". For some reason it makes all the other flash work go a lot more smoothly. You can get instructions and software for that at:
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php...ask=view&id=40&Itemid=26&limit=1&limitstart=2
Once that is done, and it should take about 5-10 minutes depending upon the speed of your computer and USB connection, you can load whatever OS rom you desire.
You can get a carrier agreeable rom from the Cingular/ATT site:
http://www.htcamerica.net/support/8525/software-downloads.html
Or, and this should work, just link directly to the rob by clicking:
http://www.htcamerica.net/support/d...R_WWE_2.15.502.3_6275_1.40.30.00_108_Ship.exe
This should leave you at the latest and greatest of the WM5 packages from Cingular/ATT, and all should be well. And . . . if it hozes . . . which it should not, you should have no warrantee issues since you were trying to flash the upgrade that THEY were providing you. :-D

ROMs from Dopod HK or Singapore are very old ones. The SPL is 1.04. You may not be able to flash backward if you are with HardSPL v7. Also if your radio ROM is newer than 1.27, you may face problem when you flash the original (as it is packed with an old radio rom).
(Please correct me if I am wrong.)
To play safe, follow mrvanx' guide:

After some readings and I have managed to used dutty's tool to recompiled the Dopod's WM5 English rom from the original Dopod shipped rom.
This rom has OS + Extended Rom ONLY.
No IPL, No SPL, No Radio.
I have tested and it works on my Hermes, and Bootloader and Radio stay as is. Please note your result may vary.
Here's the download link
http://rapidshare.com/files/29500131/WM5_Dopod_1.30.707.4__Huchison_3_AU__OS_ExtRom_only.7z
To play safe, I would suggest you to do the following prior flashing the OS rom.
1. Flash boot loader to Hard-SPL-V7
2. Flash your radio rom to 1.38. or 1.40

Flash O2 XDA Diamond? To Remove Branded Rom?

Hi guys ... I will probably be getting a O2 XDA Diamond...
The O2 Diamond has a blue branded Touchflow Gui...
Will there be anyway to install the Original HTC software on it so i have the nice Black Menu?
yep you have to install a hardspl, either olipro's [which i think is unreleased] or the one made by the diamond project team.
then you can flash a new rom.
however, check your rom version in settings->system->device information
if it reads 1.34.831.1
it means you have a new spl that prevents you from flashing hardspl until the experts here create a work-around.
i hope this helps
Rory
On a related note, I was considering getting the O2 XDA Diamond but putting the black TouchFLO 3D on it. However, I've now decided to get a normal HTC Touch Diamond, because I'm lazy and I don't want to flash a new ROM for a number of reasons.

Because of the o2 contract that i have in august i can re new the contract an will get a o2 xda for about 100 euro... so i think ill be sticking to this modell..
Please keep this thread up 2 date guys... Good work so far...
Well I´m pretty new to this. Im gonna get a XDA Diamond too within these weeks. But as mentioned the blue TouchFlow theme from O2 is really ugly in my opinion. So maybe someone can explain me how it is possible to change the ROM to get the original black theme from HTC.
What is necessary for that to work, what changes would that bring to my system (all programs lost?) and what dangers come along with that?
I appreciate your answers. Thanks.

c´mon guys, please give me some information on this.
Ok .
First of all you can take one of two options.
1) Hard SPL the device and flash a new ROM that someone has mirrored here.
Look here for Hard SPL ( Read carefully as not all Diamonds can be Hard SPl'd as yet)
HardSPL Here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395640
ROM is here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=394985
Hard SPL your device as per the Instructions then run the ROM update that you would have downloaded above . Job Done.
2) Wait until someone removes the 3G Interface from a Diamond (HTC Maila) and then apply that cab to replace your blue one.
Hope this helps
If you read the very first thread in this forum then you would have had an idea on what you was asking.
Thank you very much for your answer. So just to get me right. If i need a german ROM, is there a chance, as far as the new ROM version (probably comming with the german xda) is HardSPL useable, to flash another german HTC ROM on to it (if someone is providing it)?
And the last question, do i loose all my installed or preinstalled apps on my device, such as TOMTOM when i flash a new (other) ROM?

If its an O2 ROM then as you have an O2 device you may not need to Hard SPL but not sure on that one.
As long as you Hard SPL the device then you will be able to flash any ROM that turns up on this forum on your device. Please read the post I pointed out to you, as one of the SPL's shipping on the Diamond will not work and you may brick your device
And the last question, do i loose all my installed or preinstalled apps on my device, such as TOMTOM when i flash a new (other) ROM?
When you flash a device it will set it back to a ROM only . EG all the apps etc you have installed will be gone. TomTom if available on the device ROM will be on it as well (Although I thought O2 pefered Copilot) . If not have a look around the Forums and find a suitable TomTom cab for the device.
Again if you spend some time reading some of the threads on here and within other devices you will start to understand more .
Ok guys so hold us up to date on this.... Im getting my O2 phone in 2 weeks and I think I wont like the blue TF3D.
Ok guys... so is there any new information on getting the branded colour touchflow 3d to the orignial black one? Someone here mentioned doing it without any hardspl stuff via a CAB file or something....
ANy news on this?
Thx Busta
Here in germany it's possible to renew your contract through several online shops. When doing so, you can get any device you want. You usually also get a better deal than renewing through O2. Try if this is possible in your country and get a HTC device!
The only advantage of getting an O2 device is, that you get a refurbished device sent to you in case of a waranty return and don't have to send it in for repair. (At least that's my experience with the hermes aka. XDA Trion I had)

Whats the point of getting a HTC Touch Diamond then? The "fun" begins with cooked ROM flashing and since the Touch Diamond seems to be more and more popular, some very nice ROMs will be out in the near future. Can't wait to see where this is going...

Flashing to another ROM with HArdsSPL wipes out all in your RAM and ROM memory. it over writes al registries.
Also TomTom. A back-up is not advisable as it will not run, or cause bigger problems.

Read and search mate !
I did as i'm a total noob and still managed to install hardspl and the new rom !
Its all here to be found

tutorial/description/info/guide

Hi everyone!
Here's the deal! I'm no noob to flashing, cooking and HardSPL as I'm positive there are plenty of users who are swimming in the same pool.
Moving from another device's forum (Trinity) to the Diamond forum is quite a shock. So many posts, so many threads.
There are so many HardSPLs. OK, no problem! But what I DO miss is a tutorial thread with nice and clear descriptions stating for instance "You will need this HardSPL for this ROM", ""You will need this HardSPL for Official ROM", "You don't need any HardSPL for Official ROM", etc.
For instance:
I'm running an old version of Radio and Official Diamond ROM (Stock), 1.00.25.03 Radio and 1.37.479.3 WWE ROM.
Bootloader version is:
Code:
DIAM100 64M
SPL-1.37.0000
MicroP-Diam (LED) v11
PSOC-Diam STAGE_PVT v0x30
I'd like to first upgrade to another Official ROM, like RUU_Diamond_hTC_Asia_HK_WWE_1.93.831.1.
No info on following:
- changing an original to another original ROM: is there need for HardSPL?
- changing a supposed EU original to an Asia original ROM: is there need for HardSPL?
- if there is need for it when upgradin ROM, which one to choose based on bootloader info?
- if there is need for it when upgradin Radio, which one to choose based on bootloader info?
etc.
I can live with my new device with stock ROM, I can tweak it, no problem.
But it is my strong belief that a detailed tutorial/description/info/guide thread could get a nice sticky.
Something that would make new users like:
"Oh, I just bought a Diamond, I read this sticky, compared my bootloader info with the ones stated in the thread, checked my ROM and Radio, checked my new ROM and Radio which I want to flash, so I need this/I don't need any HardSPL and it worked"
Yes, call it spoon-feeding, but while looking at the Forums and reading and searching, there's so much clutter some can't even find the Search button!
My two cents!
I totally agree !!! We are needing that "tutorial for dummies"
Im new to the Diamond forum too, had a tytn for ages though.
I found everything i needed to know on the wiki

You don't need HardSPL to flash an official ROM. If you want to be really sure then simply go to the HTC site (I used HTC Europe), register as a user, input your phone's serial number and it should tell you that you can download the 1.93 ROM. This way you can do a 100% official upgrade before deciding if you want to use a cooked ROM.

Contradictory information?
Now since I don't have any updates in my own e-Club, there's the HardSPL option with other (even Official) ROMs.
Question is: which one? (1.23, 1.24, 1.34, Developer edition, Hard-SPL-Diamond-OliNex, HardSPL_OliNex138_Signed or RUU_Signed_1_93OliNex_HSPL_UnsignedEdition).
This is crazy!
Maybe that's the difference then - perhaps ROM downloads via the e-club are treated differently, although I can't think how.
Seems that Cmonex and Olipro are the SPL experts here (I'm sure you've already seen this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400402) so maybe they're the best ones to help.
If it helps I updated to HardSLP 1.4 and ran quite happily on my stock ROM before upgrading to Dutty's ROM. I guess it's down to how adventurous/risky you want to be.
Good luck.
1. look at the next posts, i blew it on this answer..
i like my diamond with hardspl and unlocked (using the developers, unsigned hardspl). i advice you to do the same. this covers all, signed, unsigned and official ROMs.
here, an answer from THE expert:

2. if i convinced you to hardspl then go to the unsigned version:

i am using it from the beginning (2 month at least) and i flashed my diamond 4 times without any problem at all.

i wonder what happened to you.... learn from post #3!! you are a ROM cook...you are the "uber" user! we should ask you questions
I know you say if you flash an official (uncooked) ROM to your handset then you don't need SPL however I have a Vodafone branded Diamond which won't allow you to flash a non Vodafone branded ROM so I am ssuming that you still need to use SPL to go to an unbranded ROM even if it is generic HTC.

i think you are right. never thought at this scenario.....
usually i don't buy my pda branded. no plan, no 3 years, free as a bird!
thanks for bringing it to my attention.
yeah, hard-spl to allow you to flash ROMs from other regions..
technically you shouldn't need it to 'protect' your device since its an official ROM upgrade, but then again you're trying to flash an upgrade that's not from your region so not too sure how that affects your warranty.. i would stick with hard-spl no matter what.
Although you may experience better results with certain ROMs using a certain SPL (this hasn't been clearly shown on the diamond to my knowledge) seems like the SPL is more tied to your hardware (why certain people get screen flicker and fuzzy fonts after flashing.. wrong SPL). so it stands to reason if your hardware doesn't change, you *shouldn't* have to change your SPL just cause you're flashing a new ROM

1. you don't need hardspl when you want to flash an official ROM.
if you should need one then HTC should release it with the ROM. no such thing!
HTC release official ROM "like it is" for all ppl even for the ones that never heard of hardspl. simple logic.
if you buy it branded look at the next two posts!
i like my diamond with hardspl and unlocked (using the developers, unsigned hardspl). i advice you to do the same. this covers all, signed, unsigned and official ROMs.

I have experince now with 3 HTC devices: 1. i had Trinity with wwe rom when i bought it-> try to put it to my language (Finnish ROM) didnt work, used hardspl-> it worked
2. Polaris with wwe 6.0 rom, tried to update to the latest wm6.0 rom which was a rom from Singapore, no succes-> put hardspl in device->it worked
3. In my Diamond i put hardspl right away(after 2 hour use), so that one i didnt test at all, based on my previous experience I didnt even try to flash the official 1.93 rom witout hardspl
So at least my concution is that u must have hardspl even when you want to flash a official rom from another region. Dont offcourse no if that is a fact, just what i have experience

From my experience from the diamond, you have to flash hardspl onto your handset before you can use 'other region' roms even when it is 'official'.
I have a HK WWE handset and tried to flash my rom with the first upgrade rom from SEA, and it wouldnt flash. it would say my handset is not from the correct region.
i flashed a hard spl afterwards and it worked.
So from pak1234 experience we can make some conclusion? its the same experience I got with Polaris and Trinity
Noob Agony
Hi,
As a total recent Noob (TRN), I spent about 2 working days trying to find out where to start. In particular, the definition of HardSPL, ROM and Radio.
It was very difficult to ramp up to speed. you guys rock, seriously, but your community can thrive if you lower the gate a bit. Think about all the time you'll save in the long run by giving noobs somewhere to start. 'There are no stupid questions, only arrogant responses'. -- I read that somewhere here.
For anyone who enjoys noob-razing, come visit me and I'll stick you in with my horses. Get some payback.
A Where-To-Start sticky would help enormously.
peace.
PS - Eventually I found www.modmydiamond.info and started reading. I nearly cried when my Swiss language-locked Diamond started talking in good auld English.

congrats on yr first successfull step (english language on yr swiss locked diamond)! perseverance and good reading skills pay back.
welcome to our forum!
from yr post i can understand that you started as an intelligent user/member of this forum (as opposed to noob) by using this forum accordingly with it's rules.
there are stupid questions. if one of the next is called by somebody "arrogant response" then he'll have to adjust or just grow elephant skin (i can name a few that already did):
1. "search, this was already posted". (most used)
2. "read the manual." (almost an insult)
3. "read wiki." (friendly, useful advice)
4. "most of the polls are useless." (no comment necessary)
5. "comparisons between any other ppc and diamond does not belong here, this a diamond only forum." (sadly not enough enforced)
a noob is not somebody with a low count of posts. a noob is somebody with a noobish attitude (total disregard of the forum's rules and it's members, wanting everything now, ready, chewed and put in his mouth).
respect the forum and it's members and you'll get respect and help beyond yr wildest dreams.
yr PS only confirm all from the above.
i prefer not to comment yr horses-payback threat
noob here
Hello all, noob here, just got my diamond via vodafone NL.
The device is sim locked contrary to what the agreement with was.
The current rom running on it makes this device incredibly slow, my brother has an p3300 which works way faster than my diamond (but does not look so nice).
This made me start looking for a solution. I've been reading this site for three full days and I'm still very confused, everything and it's contrary is written here, how is one supposed to draw a conclusion?
With that said I would like to see a well written tutorial in plain english and that does not assume the reader is a techie.
It should explain:
- How to backup the original ROM and hardSPL
- How to flash a new rom and avoid issues with screen flickering and so on
- How to restore the original ROM and hardSPL in case the device needs to be send back for repair
- Clarify what to do with radio roms
- How to unlock a device to be used with any sim card (ok this already exists, i've seen the sticky)
Thanks
One more question to be added
- Why would you need a CID and security unlocker?
I thought it was just another name for sim card lock but apparently not.

You should go to Support section of their site, that is where they post ROM updates apparently. e-Club has only ringtones.

Standard HTC Rom Update

Hi
Getting my new diamond tomorrow...Orange UK version
I see on the HTC site they offer a generic Rom update
If it is newer than my Orange version, I assume I can just update to the HTC version ?
I did the official o2 update on my Orbit, so think its easy enough
I cant bring myself to switch to a cooked Rom - I'm too chicken !!!!!!!
I guess if I do update to HTC generic, I will need Orange setings to be resent by Orange ???
On the orange site there is a ROM available, with instructions, basically gab the file, follow the instructions and it'll update you if needed.
I got mine 3 weeks ago, and it was the first thing I did and it still needed the new ROM and Radio.
Then install Tom Tom
Sit back and enjoy, even Orange havent branded the daylights out of it (for a change!)

Wow - that must be tucked away on the Orange site - cant find it anywhere - any pointers cos even search is no good
Tom Tom is also my first app to install - my main reason for having WM !!!
May bite the bullet and go for a custom Rom in a few days !
Finally tracked it down and all updated
So far so good
orange roms
come on guys get flashing some proper roms on ya diamonds orange roms really!!!

LOL - I should have expected that on this forum, but seriously the Orange Rom seems fine - fast, with no Orange customization. My only issue is the radio version. GSM coverage could be better. So I may update the radio, then who knows - I'll end up putting new roms on each week !!!!!!!

Need Help Unbranding Telstra HTC Touch Diamond

Hey everyone. I'm kinda new and I admit that I am a complete n00b at all this stuff.
I just got a HTC Touch Diamond and it has Telstra branding and I was wondering if anyone could help me remove it. I've had a look around, but I can't understand anything anyone is saying...what I'm led to believe is that a ROM can remove it, but I have no idea which one to get or how to do it. Can anyone give me step-by-step instructions please??? I'd prefer it was an official ROM or something, but I'm open to ideas.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
mate, I have the same telstra branded diamond. go for the gen.y rom. it is very good. don't stress, follow the instructions in another post. there will be a sticky there. it's a bit daunting but soon you will develop an addiction. reflashing will remove ALL telstra branding.
Just found it-do I get the WWE version?
Just some more questions-is there any way to go back to the original stuff?
And is there any official ROMs that can unbrand?
Looks nice, but where are the instructions?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=416211
You need to upgrade to Hardspl to allow the phone to be flashed. Yes WWE (World Wide English) is the version you need. Trust me.... theres no reason to go back to an official ROM.
Sorry I am a bit drunk and not at home so can offer little help at them momento.
Once HardSPL is finished, download the ROM, connect via active synch, run Custom RUU which is bundled in the .rar file with the rom.
Good Luck, but trust me, it's worth it.
Do I need to install a RadioROM?
And just incase of warranty purposes, if I install the original telstra ROM will it go back?
Finally, when I went to go to download HardSPL, there are to zips-Hard SPL Diamond(with the install files) and HardSPL x138 signed(with a NHB file in it). Do I use the x138 signed one??
