Hi!
My friend flashed his iPod with a non apple firmware. But then he had to send it in for reparation, dont remember why but it was on warranty. They did not fix his iPod because he did not use official rom.
Is it the same here?

Yes you lose your warranty rights IF you can't get the original boot loader and ROM back on before you have to send it back.

So.. is it worth it?

x
Basicly its up to you.. If you are experienced in ROM flashing and know how to get your old firmware back than you really dont need to worry about it. But if you are not so experienced and dont want to risk than you will have to wait. But from what Ive seen its really worth it at least for me. Duttys last ROM is extremly fast and overall one of best if not best firmware arround

nop, didn't flash custom ROMs, my point of rooting and S-off is becuz i wana overclock.. other than that.. my phone is stock... my worry is when htc comes out with GingerBread for DesireZ.. the upgrade would forbid our phone to be rooted forever.. can't image the phone running @ 800MHz...

I can't find even on the chinese forum.
however I think it's not necessary cuz so many good ROMs out there.
I did tried flash the older HK ROM, feel list almost the same with the one come with the phone
if you know people who have bought new DZ in HK and havn't change anything yet, we can ask for a dump I guess.

I don't think it's that simple though. At least, not according to the responses I got when I asked this question recently. Official RUUs and ROMs are digitally signed, for example, and we're not going to be able to do that bit.

New defy user needs help..

Hey friends...
My friend has recently bought a defy in India... It came with eclair...
Now he wants to upgrade to gingerbread... But he doesn't want to root... So can anyone please help me? As I'm a Samsung user, I don't know anything about Motorola devices or how to upgrade them... So I would appreciate a noob friendly guide...
Thanks...
u cannot upgrade to gingerbread w/o rooting...defy has got the official froyo, not gingerbread..
please read the pinned posts if u wish to know how to flash a custom gingerbread rom..

He can update to Froyo, but there is no official Gingerbread update from Motorola for the Defy (and there will never be one).
If he doesn't want to tinker a bit he won't get Gingerbread (there are also 2.3 ports of the Defy Plus that work quite well, but rooting is necessary to install anything like that).

You can mess around with your Defy s much as you want, root, install ROMs, flash sbfs... And you can ALWAYS go back to the stock Foyo/ Eclair firmware your Defy came with. Even if something went wrong and the phone doesn't boot anymore, just flash a stock clean Motorola firmware and everything's gone (the ROM you had before, also the root). So also if your Defy has a hardware problem and you want to send it back, just go back to stock before and you don't have to worry about the warranty.

I don't think so. if you changed the bootloader version you will be stuck on some higher kernel and can not easily go back.. (that was what happend to epsylon3 - one of the main devs of CM9 for defy) - so if you flashed official froyo - you will not be able to go back to eclair for example. (as is also pointed out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537)
A piece of advice: read a lot (here in this forums) before you flash something. It help you not getting in trouble with your phone.

There is no point in using defy with the buggy stock Eclair/Froyo ..
If u want to see the complete potential of defy Root it and Install CM7..
and yes you can go back when ever you want but make sure u take the Nandroid backup of the stock ROM that u r using and check whether the official sbf of ur region is available to download.so that u can flash it and restore the nandroid backup .. !!

Right, that was the only thing I wasn't thinking about. That is what is usually written in big red letters when there's something about these sbfs. But normally there is no need to change the bootloader version by installing the (not fixed) 2.3.4 sbf.
The only really current reliable options for the Defy imho are CM7.1, MIUI (and some versions based on it) and the Defy+ based ROMs (like MS2Ginger). With none of them you risk to be stuck somewhere - I flashed stock Froyo a dozen times without problems.
Thanks all for your replies....
I'll root and flash cm today....

1st of all if you bought it from a store you should take it back.

HTC warranty for 24 months is better than store warranty for 6. I recommend returning it if you're planning to use the warranty, it may be void.

Instead of asking for money for a new laptop to develop a root method, why not share your theory here and see if you and other devs can work together to get it working first?
I'm sure if people see that your method has the potential of working they would be more likely to help pay for your laptop
Personally I wouldn't give money to anyone claiming anything unless I saw evidence that their claim was genuine, and they weren't just looking for a free laptop
I lol'ed.

any experience with snapdragon chips? are you working on an existing exploit?
I don't see how a laptop will help you if you don't have either of those two.
I have expierence with snapdragon and yes im working on it either using a eng boot or a combination rom but the combination rom might not help considering that i would need to know how to go back to the original look of the phone meaning that it would need to have the playstore and everything else

I would think that your first major hurdle would be no OEM unlock option in the snapdragon. The 2nd major obstacle would be getting help unbricking your phone if you could get over the first hurdle. Somewhere on XDA there is a thread on these eng files.

You need to flash android Nougat bootloader and modem. Those two versions need to be the same as the android version. There is a guide in the guides section that can help you. Also, you can't install earlier version of bootloader and modem if those are the newest versions right now. If that is the case, you can install an 8.1 custom ROM and it should be fine.
