[Guide] Start Icons Skins QVGA-WQVGA-VGA and How-to

Hello i made this thread to post my skins for start icon, a thread already exist but it will be clearly at that, i think
This manipulation doesn't use more memory, no app required.
Here is a preview of what's looks like:

Here is a preview of differents skins you can use
For QVGA WQVGA:
Install "Icone demarrer.cab" it's just 2registry key. (thank to my friend Shakass)
Then put in "/Windows"the file named "shellres.96.dll.****.mui"
**** is the localization code of your ppc's rom (040C for France and 0409 for US/UK)
The files you'll find in the folder are in 040C so change them if you're not french.
And Soft reset
This operation will replace too your wait cursor by the wait cursor vista by Marshall if you want to keep your cursor follow the How-to instructions to extract and modify your shellres.96.dll file.
If you want to put your original system just erase your shellres.96.dll.****.mui file and soft reset.
The folder QVGA-WQVGA contains all the Start icons

Change Start text​
Open the file named shellres.dll.****.mui and go the String value 321 change the name, compile script and save then sign with MSsigner and put in /Windows; Enjoy !!
Here is some shellres.dll.040C.mui modified: Démarrer, Start, HTC, SFR, Vide(empty)
Change the country code if necessary.

For VGA:
Same manipulation just the name of the file is "shellres.192.dll.****.mui"
The folder VGA contains only the "Blue windows" and "Office" Start icons for the moment if VGA's user wants some other, request it
"Points" icon added.

How-To
​If you want to create your own icon,
For QVGA WQVGA
Create an icon in 21x18 then save as .ico file (32bits)
Take one of the "shellres.96.dll.****.mui" file
Or if you want to keep your own Wait cursor:
Copy to your SD card then to your PC the file named "shellres.96.dll"
Open it in Reshacker and go to "Icon group/4609
Clic on Action/Replace Icon/Open new file
Insert your new icon, clic replace.
Save your modified file takes the name of the old "shellres.96.dll.****.mui" and the old takes the name of "shellres.96.dll.****.mui".
If you have used your own "shellres.96.dll" file rename it as "shellres.96.dll.****.mui"
Open Mssigner,search your shellres file, clic Start sign Process
a window appear "Process finished!" then go where is your shellres file, a text file has been create
Open it, if there is wrote "Warning: This file is signed, but not timestamped,Succeeded" that prouved all is okay
After you know the suit.
For VGA
Same things just the size of the icon must be 41x36 and the name must be "shellres.192.dll.****.mui"
What is my Country Number?
Execute the Mortscript which is in the folder "ShellresNameHelper" (with Mortscript) Big Thank to mr_deimos for this script.
All the Softs are in the Tools folder

Post the info (VGA QVGA; US FR)

Cab Version of the Certificates
Here is a Cab Version of the certificates for those who are not comfortable with Registry Editor. This worked perfect for me.

Once I install the cab, what do I do? And how do you go about changing among the various icons? Sorry for the rookie questions.

Choose an icôn and go in the folder which has the same name, then put the shellres file you'll find in windows. If you aren't french change the "040C" by your localization code (0409 for US)

Do I have to put the icon itself under "Windows" as well or do I leave that in the folder? And ho do you get the default flag back if you don't like a particular icon?

^No you have to add the icon with Reshacker in your shellres file found in the /Windows folder.

The icôn in the folder is just to preview, let in the folder .

BTW Would like to see points.png as my Start-Menu icon. Can you creat ite, or can you supply the file points.png?

I have found the solution to make High Quality wallpaper in 2.5.191xxx HTC Sense!
This solution let you have your own HQ wallpaper as default wallpaper and weather animation at the same time.
First you need a wallpaper with résolution 480x768(1),if you don't have it then resize HD wallpaper 480x800 into 480x768.
you need also the 2 manila files 4bfcbbee_manila(512x512 png file) & 54612042_manila (512x256 png file).
create new file with size 512x515(3) and very important with resolution"95,987"pixels!!!
Take your wallpaper(480x768) and from the upper side cut it in 480x515 and paste image in the new file you have made before on the left side,you will have empty area on the right side, then resize the file into 512x512.
Ok first image file is ready to replace in 4bfcbbee_manila file(with m9editor),be shure to unckeck "read only" in properties of the manila file first or you can't replace the image file in it,when the image file is replaced with m9editor then recheck "read only" before you copie it back in your windows folder!
Now the second file,follow the same steps as for the first file but cut your wallpaper from the bottom into size 480x256.
create new file with size 512x256(2) and very important with resolution"95,987"pixels!!!
Take your wallpaper(480x768) and from the bottom side cut it in 480x256 and paste image in the new file you have made before(512x256) on the left side too then it will look like this:

there is an easier way to do this. When you select the marquee tool you notice (in the options bar) the option 'Style' which is probably set to 'Normal'. If you set this to 'Fixed Size' and type in 512x256 you have the exact size in one image (This is the correct way of making a perfectly sized marquee area.)

to be honest i dont know if 2.1 has the same manila files,if you want look in the tutorial for wich 2 manila files are needed and send it to me...
im thinking about to make some prefiles...

hey in sense 2.1 u have to search for those files 70083a29_manila and 77feee1d_manila (those are i think for portrait) and than 058acf31_manila and 29cff4fe_manila (are for landscape) im not shure if those files are exactly for portrait and landscape, they could be switched by me, but those definitely contain backgrounds got all of them on my PC. Tried to copy them to Windows folder but on my Blackstone it doesnt work (well it doesnt allow me to copy them to that folder - tried both from PC to HD and from HD folder to Windows folder on my HD, u can try it if it allows you than u got High res backgrounds

I mean the files on the windows mobile device. I cannot overwrite them prolly because they are read-only, but when i change their attributes they are still read-only.

Actually you can - even for 2.5.192xxx but you have to install grzegorz10_Background4all_Tabs-Manila_1920.CAB first, then select the manila 2.5 profile in the hdwalls settings. Then you have to install the cab and select weather wallpaper. Unfortunately for now i cant get it to work 100% correctly - i get black stripe on the right side of the screen - its like the size is not entirely correct, but i have the same problem using your method so it may be something related to the rom im using(or the all tabs background cab im using) or something like that - i have to check some stuff and figure this out.
edit: i measured the black bar on the right side of the screen and its width is exactly 29px

1. Update.zip choose. (Eg update_PFC_ANDROID_KITCHEN.zip)
2. USB cable for connecting your device smoothly.
3. The frameworks res.apk download from the device.
4. If there are no icons in the Component / Icons / Framework or TWFramework folders will be imported in a frameworkot. Imposrt Framework button when prompted give him what name you want to see these icons. Then, as if the Battery icongroup and selecting is the ComboBox has already shown that, given such a group is already selected you can see the icons in the Set Icons button to immediately add a framework.
5. We can go through all the icons, and what they want to track a replace Set Icons.
When finished with the Framework tab then press the Finish button will be included in the revised framework-res.apk the update.zip.
6. The ear is the same form TwFramework perform the changes.
7. If you want to add files to the Add tab update.zip versa. Choose what you want to add. Mutatis mutandis to the System / app and the data / app was able to add the selected files APK Framework Framework folder in the files marked with ( frameworks-res.apk, TWframework-res.apk, jar files), etc..
8. If you do not use the supplied update.zipet or another but we made it in the past, there may be files you no longer want to use the Delete button to delete them. Not always updated when the file list, then close the fold and re-open the tree you've seen is that it disappeared in the file that was deleted.
9. Late to change the name of Rom. You enter the text you want to ruin the name given to this device will see the Settings / About phone / Build Number below. What/when should I Check in the components-list?
And wat means the message "you have set the path components?"
And whenever I change the rom name or add an apk to system/app, the application keeps hanging... (Windows 7)

[Guide] Transparent background - framework-res.apk Contacts.apk [ICS-JB]

This is a simply method to set a transparent background on framework-dependent apks and Contacts.apk.
1. Using Photoshop or similar create a trasparent image (% as you wish) and save it as .png. If you insert a texture or image, use your device resolution for better results. Make two copies and rename its as "background_holo_dark.png" and "background_dial_holo_dark.png"
2. Decompile framework-res.apk. You can follow this great guide
3. Browse to res/values and open styles.xml. Search code for "<style name="Theme.Holo" parent="@style/Theme">"
4. On it, search this line "<item name="windowShowWallpaper">false</item>" (using Komodo is line 1006) and replace values with true. Save and close.
5. Browse to res/drawable-nodpi and replace existing background_holo_dark.png with your image
6. Recompile framework-res. You may refer to guide posted above
7. Using winrar or similar browse into Contacs.apk to res/drawable-nodpi and replace existing background_dial_holo_dark.png with your image (simply drag&drop, be careful to set compression to Store)
8. Replace framework-res and Contacts.apk on your device (Root explorer, adb, flash through recovery). Personally I also clear cache and dalvik cache
9. Enjoy your modded apks!
After the editing of framework-res.apk you may visit this thread to download also my transparent calendar and mms apks!
Remeber: always perform backup before replace any system file! Also, I'm no responsible for any problems that may occure on your phone

P.S. Of course, this method allows you to change backgroung also with any non transparent image. You simply have to rename your two image copies as reported in point 1. Then replace the original file using winrar or similar as in point 7. You don't need to decompile framework-res.apk in this case!

You can use 7zip to replace image on Contacts.apk, but you need to decompile framework-res.apk to modify styles.xml.
If you follow the linked guide you will see that compile/decompile apks is not so difficult!

Hi is it possible for you to make the stock calendar background transparent??? I hate the stock look!!.

can we use VRT universal theme flasher for CM9 Roms?
replacing framework-res usually deletes every account registered on the device. I used vrt zips on stock-based Roms easilly. but when I was trying to use it on a CM9 Rom iit just crashed everything.

During last days I've replaced framework-res about one hundred of times I think, and I never lost any account. Don't know what VRT is, I usually flash new framework-res with recovery.

Yea you can. Im using a zip I posted here. Its by Villain team and JRsoft. I haven't had any problems with it. This ones set up to replace the whole framework though so dont flash it on anything other than paranoid 1.6.

But, i followed every single step on this, but i can't get transparency in contacts, only in phone application, and all the rom...very cool.
But my contacts background it's completely dark.
I also changed framework, inside res/drawable-nodpi, background_holo_light.png to a transparent png file with the same name....but didn't worked also...
So, what to do?

use the contacts.apk I posted in the zip above. Backup yours first of course, it can be found in the extras/system/app folder of the zip.

It's is normal you've only phone.apk transparent.
Having contacts.apk too, you need edit xml and compile it.

I didn't find any "how to" about transparency on that thread...just a guy who post some pics of transparency and said it was very easy.....
So, everyone is telling "need to edit xml on contacts.apk and compile"...i'm tired of know that...it would be more useful say which files, where and what to do.

The easiest way is taking my files.
Compiling AOKP contacts.apk gives a lot of problem. It's a know bug and any tools can compile it correctly.
(excuse me for my bad english, I'm french)

The rest is the framework See the title, you're in the right thred !
Yes, MMS.apk is transparent too.
If you don't want it, remove it from the zip.
