Upgrading/flashing my TyTN - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Hi there
So, i've been reading a lot about flashing and upgrading with roms. I want to upgrade my 6.0 to 6.5 but i'm scared that if something goes wrong my device will be ruined. Is there any way to recover a scrambled flash ?
Thanks a lot

if you read the wiki for the hermes you will see the ways to hopefully stop your phone becoming a brick, such as hard-spl and using the sd card method can also help, if youve get any more questions after reading the wiki pages just ask.
Have fun

Here you go: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeForBeginners
By the way, it is more risky to flash the radio part of the rom. This is where you really can brick your pda. Basically there is no need to flash the radio module as long as your hermes is "phoning" correctly.
All 6.1 and 6.5 proposed by our chefs are "radio free". If, as explained in the above link, you have installed HARDSPL, and if you use the SD card flashing method, you will be quite safe. (I did it... i do not remember how many times...and my hermes is still fine)
Just one think. Some roms are using a special trick to enlarge the capacity remaining for your applications. This is greath. But it mixes up a bit the structure of the memory of the hermes. Basically no problem with that as it is not permanent. But if you want to flash a new rom after this one, you will need to flash first an official rom (like the ATT stripped one - means: without the radio part - flying on this forum) This is intended to restructure the memory scheme and avoid strange behaviours like automatic hard resets, etc...
For example, look for a rom from Tai. There is a link to the ATT rom on his thread.
Good luck and... welcome to the flashing addict community
It is good practice to flash such a rom

Step by Step from box to rocks

First let me apologize for the title of this thread, I really couldn't resist. I just bought a i-mate jasjam and have spent the last several days reading these forums, the wiki, and all the other places that clicking things here will take you. I want to say right out that EVERYTHING I know about the Hermes I learned from this site, and that I am a complete beginner, and please do flame away if i am wrong. I'd rather get insulted online than have a brick in my pocket.
THe one thing that there isn't in the wiki (that I found anyway) is a current, step by step for total noobies like me who don't know what to do first and get scared by dealing with more than three file types in one sitting, that uses the SD card method. It seems that the SD method is faster, easier (especially if you run Vista), and even a little safer that the "old school" RUU method.
Soooo, I'd like to write a new wiki page to this effect, and am more than happy to put in screenshots, links, host file downloads, etc. What i'd REALLY appreciate is if you senior types could take a look at this simple outline and tell me if there is something drastically wrong with it. After a good schooling I'll post a complete article with more copied info from the threads and complete sentences and punctuation and stuff.
PROPOSED "DAY-ONE, JUST OUT OF THE BOX CAN"T WAIT TO" UPGRADE
1.enter bootloader mode to check sp version
2.format an SD card to FAT32, checking card integrity and fixing errors
3.Use Winar to Extract the .NHB file from Hard-SP-v7.zip, transfer to SD card with card reader and rename to HERMIMG.NHB
4.put the card in the phone and enter the bootloader by pressing side OK, Power, and soft reset button (with stylus). Once in bootloader mode accept the upgrade
This safe-nates things up, and CID unlocks the phone, right?
5.re-format SD card to FAT32, checking card integrity and fixing errors
6. Use WinRar to Extract the .NBH from HERM_Radinly_1.41.00.10_CustomRUU, transfer it to the SD card and rename it HERMIMG.NBH
7. put the card in the phone and enter the bootloader by pressing side OK, Power, and soft reset button (with stylus). Once in bootloader mode accept the upgrade
8. check the radio version in system info
9. re-format the SD card for FAT32, checking integrity and fixing errors
10. Use WinRar to Extract the .NBH from WM6 ROM of choice, transfer it to SD card and rename HERMIMG.NBH
11. Put the card in phone and enter the bootloader mode as above, when in bootloader accept the upgrade. Follow instructions from mrvanx for activesync
12. transfer my CAB files for applications to (Temp?) folder on card and then run each of them to install my apps (Skype, CeStar,TengoThumb, etc.)
Does this sound about right? Thoughts? Flames?
Thanks to all for such fantastic work, donations on the way for all who wrote files I have downloaded over the past few days, you guys rock!
whats with the SD card upgrading?
you can run HardSPL by itself, you dont have to extract and put the nbh file on ur storage card.. unneccesarry steps if you ask me..

Well, I run Vista, and I like the idea of not having to fiddle with the drivers in order to do RUU, and I saw a few posts that some people had difficulty getting things to work with Vista. Also, posts have led me to beleive that it is faster to do it this way, which would lead to less chances of things going wrong (it's really hard to make Vista stop doing things in the background all the time). Also, there are already really awesome guides for doing it the RUU way, but not one for a complete SPL/Radio/ROM upgrade using this method, I think it appeals to a lot of people, including the dreaded Mac user. If it's not actually a good way please do explain, and finally, to me it just seems plain easier. I've only found a few posts that had troubles with the method and dozens that praised it. thanks for replying!!
Madcap, thanks for the input, I was going for continuity but I take your advice, keep 'em coming!!!
oh...you didn't mention Vista in your original thread.. lol .. best advice I can give you ... Throw vista in the trash.

Yep, I ll drink to that
ugh .. u mentioned the D work.. great.. now I'm going to relapse..
Step 4 does not CID unlock the device. It looks like it just installs Hard SPL which will allow the user to recover from a bad radio flash.
Of course this should not matter as there really isn't a need to CID unlock any more (unless you want to unlock/unhide your EXT ROM)
HardSPL just makes your phone Temporary superCID right or something to that effect.

Cool, it was my understanding that Hard SPL temporarily makes you super CID (as Madcap said) allowing you to flash on any ROM you want, for all intents and purposes is this not pretty much the same thing as unlocking? Not arguing, just trying to clarify. A lot of noobs know that CID is an issue and that they need to disable it somehow when they flash......
Please keep comments coming,Thanks!!!!
P.S. MOD, in my sleep addledness I think I posted this in the wrong place, should it be moved to the UPGRADE forum? THANKS!!
P.P.S. Drinking is the only way I can tolerate having a Vista machine, we all were so happy about getting our new laptops this year, and then we turned them on....it's like getting a christmas present in the shape of a new bicycle, but when you tear off the wrapping paper there's really a tetanus shot inside.
SUCCESS!!
I followed the OP steps (with very minor modification) and was able to go from a completely new, out of the box, never even put in a sim card phone to HardSP-V7, upgraded radio, new WM6 ROM (Schaps, this ROM is awesome, thanks!!!). All without using a cable or upgrading any drivers. From beginning of first download to totally upgraded was one hour. Why anyone would ever do this the old-fashioned way is beyond me, especially if you are running Vista. I'm making a tutorial and have collected the few little things you need to do this and will add a wiki article with pics ASAP.
Thanks to everyone for all the great info and hard work here, a complete noob like me can go from 0-60 entirely by reading this site. I am loving this phone more by the minute!!
A noob who has read the posts and wiki, and then created and tested a step by step routine for others like himself in order to address something that the wiki doesn't.
A fine example that a lot of others should note.

Sorry man, I just couldn't help myself. I am in love with Vista. No problems whatsoever with it. Have had it installed since it came out and never had to re-install. Speed is the same as when I installed it. Can't say that for XP! LOL. I forget how many times I had to install that piece of........................
LOL
p.s no flames........please.
I love Vista. Its given my two year old laptop a new lease of life.
Hi mlalahoi,
I am getting a lot of issues after installing CE-Start. Played virtually with every WM 6 ROM arround and still experiencing freezing.
Have run Shadow and LVSW without CE-Start for couple of days and both ROMs was very stable and fast. After CE-Start lot of problems.
Will be nice to hear your experience with the Chinese characters

Did you download the 2.8 Suite from the mobem website here AND use thier installer to install TO THE PHONE (install to SD doesn't work)?
I had similar problems when I went through the process of getting my hermes to be dual English and Chinese. THe first time I tried to manually install some cab files I found on a chines forum somewhere, totally jerked my normally very good Shaps ROM. I ended up having to do a hard reset, trying to uninstall the cabs just caused an unrecoverable hang. Make sure you use the official, latest install program and install to the phone, mines been flawless ever since.
Without registering you don't get the dictionary, but you can get a really good free version of CEDICT for mobiles here, it allows you to search by pinyin w/wo tones, english, or chinese characters. If you have trouble getting it to copy-paste between other apps try this app from the Wiki.
I have a collection of good ppc Chinese learning tools, pm me if you want to set up a file transfer, and do check out www.mandarintools.com for all your CHinese computing needs, no affiliation, just a great site.
Hi mlalahoi,
Thanks for the links! Actually I was using all the time v2.8 of Ce-Star, including the original installer - never used cabs to install. I found that "my" version of Ce-Star package is 6KB less than the one you recomended - here might be the problem. During the weekend will flash a new Rom and will play with the "new" Ce-Star 2.8 -- hope it will rock
I am using the ppc version of 金山 (PowerWord) and it serves me well. My Chinese characters needs are very simple ones - to be able to reed text and e-mails in Chinese, and rarely to answer using characters.
Will send you feedback about stability of the ROMs with "new" Ce-Star

upgrading the ROM - a noob guide

Hi all
please dont flame the n00b. I have recently acquired my first smartphone the diamond and am very pleased with it. I have read through the threads and have developed my understanding of the considerations to make in flashing the ROM on my phone
I have an early version of the ROM as I received one of the first stock into the UK, which turned out to be grey imports from hong kong :S . I would like to realise some of the speed / battery / bugfix benefits of the newest ROM
however many of these threads are quite long , so i was wondering if someone could do me a favour by succintcly summarising the steps i would need :
my phone is runnning :
1.34.831.1 WWE - the unit is from hong kong i beleive, i have registered on HTC HK e-club
I would like to upgrage this is the latest signed UK ROM ?
If this is not possible can advice be given on going to the latest HK WWE ?
I understand this will involve changing the HARD SPL ?
Additionally can any method provided be confirmed as a reversible process should i need to invoke the warranty ?
thanks in advance for your help.
please let me know if you need any further information form me in order to help.
thanks
1: install hardspl (unsigned)
2: search the threads for the newer HK stock roms, they've been posted by tudispin I think.
3: flash
4: should need arise, you can revert to stock spl, search the threads for spls by htchackers.
you should be able to flash back for warranty purposes.. safest thing is still to dump your current ROM (search the forums and wiki for how-to), but i think you'll be alright. You can check out my site for step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade your ROM
thanks so far
just for help so far
your guide looks great racerx_
so i should be able to do the following tonight
1: install hardspl (unsigned)
2: search the threads for the newer UK? stock roms,
3: flash
4: and should the need arise, you can revert to stock spl, search the threads for spls by htchackers.
once the hardspl is loaded am i correct in thinking any ROM can be loaded ?
oh but
dump my current ROM before proceeding .. just in case

yeah you should technically be able to load any ROM... if signed Hard-SPL, then only any signed ROM of course
hit a slight problem
So i am tryiong to HARD SPL. have gone through all the instructions but :
when installint the HARD SPL . the phone screen switches off the progress bar on PC sits at )% for about 20 sec it then accelerates to 100% very quickly within around 2 mins. It say that is is installed correctly
however the phone restarts and i can still see the d: as 1.34.00.00
so the loinex 1.3 has not installed
the windows is hard reset as i then have to go through the screen calibration
any help appreciated
HardSPL is not the ROM, just software to enable the update
once you installed HardSPL you should now be able to install a ROM
hi
yes sorry for the confusion in my past previous description. It is the HARD SPL software update which says that it is installed but isnt
i have not attempted to load another ROM until this is done first
any further advice ?
in essence when installing the olinex 1.30 i get no errors
bit it doesnt install and all i get is a hard reset ?
If it goes through OK, it has installed You don't see anything different in the splash screen- that just lists the basics
To confirm, go into Bootloader mode by holding down the Volume Down Key and at the same time pressing the red reset button at the mouth of the stylus silo. It can take a few goes, but will show a rainbow screen listing the SPL etc, which ought to say 1.30 Olinex, confirming the correct SPL flash.
Once confirmed press the reset button to restart.
ok thanks for step by step advice there
the HARD SPL is loaded version 1.30 I will try a new ROM now
i am trying the :
RUU_Diamond_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.37.707.1_Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.26a.25.09_1.00.25.03_Ship
which is signed so should work
mmm even though the phone is synced up I get error
"262" when i try to install new ROM
it basically stalls on 0% for about 4 to 5 mins before it aborts with this error message.
i have searched the forums but cannot see a succinct plausible answer
hmm.. i thought that error was usually encountered with unsigned ROMs...
1) are you flashing with xp or vista
2) are you connected through a USB hub?
3) what EXACTLY are your steps for flashing this ROM
hi there
yeas flashing through vista 64 bit
and not using USB hub but direct connection
I downloaded the signed 1.37.401.3 Europe ROM linked from this forum and this installed fine
the improvement over the old ROM is immense. so far i am delighted by the results.
I am still perplexed as to why the asian ROM did not install still :S
only difference so far is that this EUROP ROM does not have the remote desktop app
thanks for all your help. I am going to test this ROM over the coming week, but unless there is a compelling reason to another ROM i will stick with this
Why HARDSPL when flashing HTC rom?
When using the newer 1.37 roms, you download the installer from e-club, make activesync conn en go for it?
A noob's point of view
I got my Diamond about two weeks ago, and since I'm new to PDAs and WM, I've done a lot of reading on the forums, wiki etc. At first things were quite murky for me and I know what my fellow noob here is feeling. So I thought I should share my experience (or lack there of) for the use of other noobs.
What I Know
HardSPL is needed in order to flash a cooked (non original HTC) ROM. As I understand, it is the equivalent of BIOS for PCs, mixed with a bootloader flavor. You need to first change this section of software first in order for the cooked roms to be accepted.
HardSPL comes in two flavours:
- the developer edition with which you can flash any type of roms (signed, unsigned, original) link: HardSPL dev ed
- the signed edition with which you can flash signed roms (original HTC, and cooked signed). The signed ROM versions give an added sense of reliability since they are tested. link: HardSPL signed the topic name was confusing for me at first
A list of signed ROMs: here
There are more than one "cooks" out there working in teams or otherwise. And more than one ROM you can flash. I did a lot of reading before I chose the one to use, I find user feedback the best measuring tool for quality .
Now for the flashing part
After you downloaded the HardSPL and the chosen ROM, you need to install ActiveSync. This is found on the CDs that come with the device, or downloadable fromo the M$ ****e aaaa site ActiveSync is a tool used for transferring contacts, e-mails and other outlook stuff if you use it, files, AND is needed for the flashing process. When installing, if you do not use outlook and do not like "syncronisation folders" on your desktop uncheck every "folder" option, you will be better off.
This site was very useful to me since it gave a detailed description flashing with visual documentation which (a bit uncomfortable to admit) was very helpful for me.
The HardSPL flash takes little time to complete and unless going into bootloader mode (vol down + soft reset) is completely transparent to the user.
The ROM flash takes longer 10 mins - they go by pretty slowly .
For safety reasons, I also downloaded an original HTC ROM just in case.
Because the flashing process once started SHOULD NOT be stopped there are a few things to consider:
- charge the battery
- firmly and directly (no hubs) plug the USB cable into computer and device.
- if you live in an area where power cuts are often consider doing the flashing on an UPS-enabled computer.
When the flashing finishes, the device will reboot and you will have to set-up again. If using TLRs ROM do not panic if you have to align the screen 6 times or so as I did. You will eventually get to the next step
What I don't know or am not sure of:
- when using signed HardSPL can I load an original HTC signed ROM? if so, is this enough in case of RMA issues?
- when reflashing with a newer/different ROM can I restore a back-up made with the previous ROM? I'm using sprite and I backed up everything, including what registry stuff it offered to. In this case, do i need to reapply the registry tweaks? dunno if sprite backs-up all the registry or just some of it.
Im must thank guys for this thread, i am minutes from going to the postal office to get my Diamond and this weekend has been full of information reading and program downloading, but the only thing i was a bit hung up on was this flashig buisness. Of course i know a lot about flashing ( Right about everything there is to flash ) but almost nothing about Phone Flashing
But i think i will try the version i get now first to see if i feel the need to update to anything else...
Hence my question is rather simple... How tha fack do i see what version i already have? >_< is it that (vol down + soft reset) thing? or am i way out of place?
thx.

No, that is for HardSPL info. To see the ROM version, go to settings - device info and you'll see both ROM and radio.

Is there a simple way to downgrade to WM6 or WM6.1 after installing WM6.5?

I've read people saying that it is possible to downgrade back to WM6.1 or 6.0 after upgrading to WM6.5. I'm trying out some new ROMs on my Hermes, but I don't want to be stuck with a WM6.5 ROM if I decide that I don't like a ROM after I flash it...
I have HardSPL Olipro on my handset. Say for example I wanted to flash Josh's Dark Winter WM6.5 ROM (from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=461490). I have the OEM AT&T stripped ROM, and I have the flavour of the ROM I want to flash.
Is there an easy way to downgrade or flash back to WM6/6.1 from this point if I successfully flash the WM6.5 ROM? I've looked round xdadevs and other venues, and the only downgrade guides I can find are mrvanx's SPL guides. I'm sure somebody has written a downgrade guide but I can't for the life of me find it!

At the moment I'm flashing WM6.1 ROMs using the SD card method from the bootloader. Would this still be possible after flashing to WM6.5, or would I have to flash with the USB cable?
You still can use the SD Card method.

You just need to flash the 6.0 or 6.1 with ANY method... its a Hermes not a PSP!
Haha - so it's really that simple? I can just take the RUU_signed.nbh from ANY WM6/6.1/6.5 release, rename it to hermimg.nbh and SD card flash it with HardSPL... and it'll always work fine, no problems?
The reason I'm being so careful is because my Hermes is my only phone, and I have no other phone for at least several months Can't afford to brick my only communications device!

Once you have HardSPLed the Hermes its virtually impossible to brick it. Also the same methodology and process that was used to flash the 6.5 ROM can be used to flash the 6.1 ROM. So do a search, download and flash to your pleasure is contented.
the fact of it being wm6/6.1 or 6.5 is just the os that is in with the rom unlike computers the whole rom is flashed so the os is removed with it.
Have Fun
Well that's cool
I was under the impression that flashing some WM6.5 ROMs did stuff to the radio stack, which then caused problems if you tried to flash back to WM6.1... As long as you've got HardSPL, is this not a problem then?
I've done it many times, just make sure you flash a stock OEM rom first, the different compressions used may cause a problem, which is taken care of by the stock rom. After doing that, as long as you have the hard spl, you shouldn't have a problem.
haha.. guess u didnt finish reading the thread on wm6.5
josh was da one who said its not possible to downgrade but at the end of the thread. he said he was jus joking. lolz
its okay that u flash 6.1 from 6.5. it makes no difference. but always flash a default rom first cos there might be problem if u flash directly from rom to rom. especailly from big storage ones

I got a bit worried after I kept on seeing people saying that it was difficult / possibly dangerous / impossible
My problem is whenever I use xda-devs, I always open 12 threads at once in different tabs - then I flick back and forth from one tab to another reading so many different things at once, sometimes I don't read everything in a thread by mistake. I guess that's served me right hasn't it!

I was wondering why the 6.5 ROM chefs were recommending that you flash the stock AT&T rom before flashing theirs... Thanks for inadvertantly answering that question for me
Thanks also to all who replied to this thread. I couldn't find a single definitive answer on how safe it was to flash between 6.1 and 6.5 (and maybe back to 6.1 again); I've had a look at the various 6.5 ROMs and they seem to be fairly similar - but do people have their own particular favourites which work well and have a decent featureset?

Question on newbie with rom update

okay, guys, I have a few question that I am hoping it can be answered before I advernture ito flashing my rom.
First of all, I relaly appreaciate all of the people who work so hard getting the rom updated. You guys rocks.
Now, this is the first time I am going to flash to my tilt 2. As I have read the flashing the GSM phone guide (which I am hoping that's the guide I should be following to flash). I am just a bit confused as to how to do it.
It appears to me that I must flash the SPL unlocker in order to flash to the any rom am I correct? Just curious what exactly does it do? If I flash it, would tehre be any issue if I decided to go back to the original rom. I saw that at HTC's site, they have stock rom for ATT phone (http://www.htc.com/us/support/tilt-2-att/downloads/)so if I want to go back, can I just use that file and flash it back? Or I need to flash to a diff HardSPL? before I can use it?
Also, i am curious as to are there any program that will let me keep all of the settings and stuff up to date. in my past where I have the hp's ipaq. I had a tool where after I flash teh rom or do a hardreset, I can run that tool to revert all of the program and configurations (of course, I had a backup file first).
Let me just double check:
basically
1-hardspl
2-rom
3-all set
again, my phone is ATT tilt 2, I would really appreciate any information.
The SPL is kind of similar to the BIOS in your computer; it performs very low-level functions, and functions as a bootloader, among other things. The SPL is responsible for flashing new ROMs to the device, and the SPL that comes on your device won't let you flash ROMs not signed by HTC. HardSPL is a patched SPL that removes this ROM signature check, allowing any ROM, official or custom, to be flashed. The way HardSPL is designed also makes it more difficult (though not impossible!) to brick your device.
If you ever want to restore your original SPL (for warranty purposes, etc.) there are a few threads which explain how to do this, and the HardSPL thread has all the SPLs available for download. If you flash the package from AT&T, your ROM will be the original ROM, but the SPL will still be HardSPL, which isn't okay if you're returning the device for warranty purposes since they check for that. As I said, there are a few threads which have full tutorials for restoring your AT&T Tilt2 to stock.
For backup, there are tons of solutions out there such as the User Customization types (XDA User Customization and Sashami), as well as the full backup and restore suites (Sprite backup, SPB backup). I've automated everything on my device with XDA User Customization, so I don't know much about the full backup and restore suites, though a backup and restore suite might be more what you're looking for based on your description.
Lastly, you have the order of flashing correct. Optionally, you can flash a radio ROM later on, but if this is your first time flashing, you might want to wait awhile until you're more comfortable with flashing.

Question from a NOOB about ROM's

I currently have a touch pro 2 with the stock sprint winmo 6.1 rom.
This thing is starting to lag and causes me to delete alot of messages
that i really don't want to.
I have downloaded a copy of the energy rom and the sprint 6.5 rom
but really have no idea what to do with them. I have read about
the hard spl and that if things are not done right, you can brick
the phone. Not trying to do much with it except get it to move
a little faster without the freeze.
Help please!!!
Firstly, you need to understand that flashing a new ROM will overwrite everything saved on your device's internal memory. If you have games, documents, or anything else of value on the internal memory, you'll need to back it up before you flash. Micosoft My Phone is a good way to backup contacts, SMS, and other personal data on your device.
After backing everything up, you'll need to prepare your device to accept an unsigned ROM. Keep in mind that flashing a new ROM VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY. There is no need to ever tell your carrier about it, though, and restoring it to factory conditions if you ever need to send it in is a piece of cake. Just don't go flashing a new ROM and show it off in your carrier's stores, because I guarantee you that they will block you from your warranty.
Now, you'll need to go over to the CDMA Hard SPL thread and follow the instructions there to put the Hard SPL on your device. You can't do anything until this is done. Hard SPL overwrites the SPL on your device and allows you to flash unsigned ROMs, radios, and other things that your carrier frowns upon.
Once that is done, you'll want to go on over to the CDMA task29 thread and run that tool as directed. This erases and formats your internal memory and prepares your device to accept a fresh new ROM. Only use the task29 tool with the files it comes with. Never swap out any part of it, unless you feel like messing something up.
Following the task29, you are now free to flash which ever ROM or radio you desire. Make sure you read the information presented in the threads of the ROMs you may choose. Many contain valuable information that will answer most of your questions.
You have a lot of reading ahead of you to understand how this all works. I strongly urge you to do some research into what you are doing and read the instructions carefully in each thread I've mentioned.
Lastly, make sure that everything you flash (ROMs, radios, et cetera) to your device is meant for a CDMA device. If your try to load something that is for a GSM device, you'll have yourself a shiny new paperweight on your hands.
Thanks for the info. Now if i want to flash to a new rom or update to 6.5 do i need to flash a new radio?
